We are Fashion Revolution. We are designers, academics, writers, business leaders, policymakers, brands, retailers, marketers, producers, makers, workers, trade unions and fashion lovers. We are the industry and we are the public. We are world citizens. We are you.

1 mobilisation: social mobilisation seeks to facilitate change by encouraging and enabling a significant number of people to engage in interrelated and complementary efforts.

advocacy: advocacy in all its forms seeks to ensure that people, particularly those who are most vulnerable in society, are able to: 2

1. Have their voice heard on issues that are important to them. 2. Defend and safeguard their rights. 3. Have their views and wishes genuinely considered when decisions are being made about their lives.

systemic: relating to an entire system, as opposed to a particular part. 3

We campaign for a clean, safe, fair, transparent and accountable fashion industry. We do this through research, education, collaboration, mobilisation1 and advocacy2. The issues in the fashion industry never fall on any single person, brand, or company. That’s why we focus on using our voices to transform the entire system. With systemic3 and structural change, the fashion industry can lift millions of people out of poverty and provide them with decent and dignified livelihoods. It can conserve and restore our living planet. It can bring people together and be a great source of joy, creativity and expression for individuals and communities. We believe in a global fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment and values people over growth and profit.

Fashion Revolution Week happens every year in the week surrounding the 24th of April. This date is the anniversary of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse. Rana Plaza, a building in Bangladesh, housed a number of garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. @fash_rev

Over 1,100 people died in the collapse and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. The victims were mostly young women. What is a ‘haulternative’? You don’t need to buy new clothes to enjoy a haul. In fact, its better if you don’t. (see previous page for more on that) Instead of the traditional fashion haul, where you go shopping and post a video of what you’ve bought, try a #haulternative; a way of refreshing your wardrobe without buying new clothes. We have 8 different haulternatives to choose from. Pick the one that most inspires you, create a haulternative video, and post it during Fashion Revolution Week 2020 (20th - 26th of April). We hope that making this video will inspire you and your audience to think differently about other ways of buying and experiencing clothes.

#haulternative broken & beautiful

What is it? Just like you never stopped loving your teddy when he lost an eye or arm, there are certain items of clothing which we continue to love, maybe even more, when they are no longer perfect; a pair of jeans that are almost worn through but are so soft and fit so perfectly still, a favourite jumper that’s fraying at the sleeves. @fash_rev

fashionrevolution.org

@fash_rev

How do I do it? Share the story about an item of clothing that you’ve worn in to the point that others may see it as damaged or broken, but that you love and will cherish forever. Find inspiration... Search ‘visible mending’ on youtube, instagram, pinterest.

#haulternative fashion fix

What is it? When we wear clothes we adore again and again, they can start to show signs of wear and tear. A rip, a missing button or a stain should never stand in the way of you and a good outfit. Don’t throw them out, give them a fashion fix.

@fash_rev

fashionrevolution.org

@fash_rev

How do I do it? Make your clothes last longer by repairing them when they need it. Get creative; make your broken seams, holes and tears into a fashion statement. Find inspiration... There are loads of how-tos online that can teach you amazing ways to mend and revitalise your clothes. Here are some of our favorites: fashionrevolution.org

#haulternative clothes swap What is it? Swapping, swishing, sharing. The simplest way to extending the life of your clothes is by giving them to a new owner. How do I do it? Swap with a friend, a colleague, a neighbour or an enemy. Host your own clothes swapping event (we made a handy guide on how to do this) or keep it small and swap with a fellow video creator and film it.

Make it digital Get your friends in a virtual group and do a virtual swap. Scan each other’s wardrobes, and make offers - I swap my pink jumper (the one you always admired) for your denim miniskirt, your gold sneakers (you never wear them anyway) for my vintage Gucci bag. Be prepared to make sacrifices, and great gains. Make a pledge to each other so that your virtual swaps might become a reality when lockdown and selfisolation is over. Then plan your clothes swap using our resources.

Great swappers: Global Fashion Exchange, Stories Behind Things, Lablaco. @fash_rev

#haulternative D.I.Y

What is it? If you’ve fallen out of love with a piece of clothing, or that thrift find isn’t quite doing it for you, dont throw it, alter it. You can change the look of something using simple alterations or take it one step further and have it fully customised by an expert, if you dont have the time or inclination to do so yourself. @fash_rev

fashionrevolution.org

@fash_rev

How do I do it? If you are willing to experiment, you can start by trying dying something a different colour, cropping an old tee or customising a denim jacket. Search D.I.Y tutorials online to learn some new skills. Find inspiration... Search ‘thrift flip’ on youtube to see how people customised their finds. fashionrevolution.org

#haulternative love story

What is it? No one can replace the beautiful jacket that your grandmother wore and gave to you. Or that perfect little dress you found while travelling somewhere special. Rather than buying new, fall back in love with the things you already own. @fash_rev

fashionrevolution.org

@fash_rev

How do I do it? Share a story, or write a love letter about an item of clothing that means a lot to you. Find inspiration... in your wardrobe. Download our ‘Love Story’ pdf for more information and ideas. fashionrevolution.org

#haulternative 2nd hand/vintage

What is it? Second hand, from the hands (and wardrobes) of another, often means getting your favorite looks at a fraction of the cost (to the earth and your wallet). Vintage can sometimes get a little pricey but it allows you to express a unique personal style and you’ll still be reusing, repurposing and extending the life of beautiful clothes.

How do I do it? Hunt for your own unique piece at a local vintage market, thrift shop or charity shop. Or search online if you dont have one nearby. Find inspiration... Everywhere! The world is your oyster on this one. Visit a second hand shop and let the colours, textures, patterns and shapes guide you.

Online second hand marketplaces: ThredUp, Vestiaire Collective, Poshmark, Depop, Etsy, Ebay. @fash_rev

#haulternative renting

What is it? Renting is trending, and more and more people the world over are utilising this system to slow down conspicuous consumption.

How do I do it? Search online for rental services (we’ve listed a few below). Rent a piece, have a great time wearing it, then send it back.

With today’s absurd pressure over not wearing anything twice, renting is the perfect way to access designer clothing at super affordable prices. All you have to do is bring them back. Online rental platforms: Onloan, Hurr Collective, Higher Studio, Rent the Runway. @fash_rev

#haulternative slow

What is it? Fast fashion and mass produced luxury have distracted us from the beauty and true value of the handmade, from intricate embroidery to a simple, delicate hand weave. Women’s hands have been making beautiful textiles for millennia, and today’s innovation allows us to bring the past into the future.

@fash_rev

fashionrevolution.org

@fash_rev

How do I do it? Some of the hottest young designers are embracing “slow” globally! Manmade and artisanal are fast becoming the new luxury: discover a technique you are most drawn to. Is there a local artisanal heritage that could inform your decision? Follow the threads to your favourite piece.
