POINTS TO CONSIDER ABOUT CARRY ON LUGGAGE So you’re going on a trip, and you need to get new luggage. Depending on what you’re taking and how much of it, you might be able to travel with just carry on luggage! Generally, there is no weight restriction, as long as you can manage it yourself – though there will probably be a helpful strong passenger near you who can help heft it into the overhead storage bin. Remember, though, that there are stricter limitations of what can be carried in a carry on. You would want to check the current regulations prior to flying, as they change periodically.

Generally, an airline will allow you to carry with you on the airplane a piece of luggage that fits within the airline template as well as a purse/briefcase/laptop/backpack. The carry on luggage has to fit within the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has a guideline that recommends 22”x18”x10”, including wheels, handles, etc. Some airlines allow a bit more, some a bit less. Check with your airline for specifics.

Choosing Carry On Luggage It can be hard to choose carry on luggage, particularly when there are (what seems like) a million available! There are many manufacturers who have been in the business for a long time, like Samsonite luggage or Hartmann luggage, as well as brands you’ve never heard of that a store can obtain less expensively. Whether you are just going on a flight that is a “short hop” or a long international flight, there are several things that need to be considered when you are planning to buy new carry on luggage. Thankfully, manufacturers realized that not all of us really want to “carry on” our luggage – many prefer to pull it behind us! Look for carry on luggage that has wheels. Trust me – you’ll appreciate them. As for value, whether you get a cheaper bag that will need replacing sooner or spend the money for a quality, longer-lasting bag is up to you. You should base the decision on how often you travel. If you are a couple-of-times-a-year traveler, the lessexpensive bag should do fine. If you are a heavy-duty traveler, opt for the more trustworthy bag. Bags rarely fail at home, and when you’re on your trip is not the idea time to be shopping for a replacement. Why Carry On Luggage When You Can Check Everything? There are several reasons having carry on luggage is a necessary idea. You want to keep valuables or items you might need in transit (or within the time it would take to get your luggage – anyone ever heard “your luggage is lost”?) like medicines and a snack. Also, having just carry on luggage saves so much time spent on checking and retrieving baggage! Though it isn’t always practical, now that airlines are getting more stingy with their space and charging for checked bags, it is cheaper to fit everything you need to take into just your carry on luggage.
