I can’t believe this is the 5th Anniversary of FLBD’s Women In Motorcycling issue. First, please take note of the advertisers who participated in this issue and patronize those businesses as much as possible. We would also like to thank Carolyn Crowley of Ladylaw.com for once again sponsoring this important issue and providing prizes for the I Ride Because winner and the women’s organization winner, both announced in this issue. We could not continue to publish this issue without ladylaw.com’s support so should you need legal services, Ms. Crowley is an aggressive attorney who will fight for you as though she is fighting for a family member. Women are absolutely changing the face of the motorcycle community. They begin riding earlier. They make major related purchases. They are a force. Congratulations to all the women out there who continue to blaze trails, break barriers and re-define the perception of women riders. Going forward, FLBD is going through more growing pains and we are actively seeking Guest Bloggers to discuss everything from tech tips to top 10 lists. If you are interested, please send your idea or blog draft to editor@ flbdelmarva.com. If you are more comfortable with assignments, I have those as well so don’t be shy!

FLBD August - Mods vs. Rockers - Cruisers and scooters will be featured. If you have anything to show us, submit a representative photo or two at submissions@ flbdelmarva.com. Until next month, keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

The beginning of this year’s legislative season began with a bang! The helmet law bill from Rep. Sean Lynn (D Dover) was first out of the box. As you all know it died in Committee due to the efforts of concerned riders all over this great nation. To those who helped by writing letters, thank you!! Next up was SB 12 the Auxiliary Lighting bill that would allow the use of LED accent lighting on motorcycles. This common-sense law sailed through both the House and Senate and was finally signed by the Governor on April 13th. Be advised that the only colors currently allowed are orange and white. It seems things have gone quiet for motorcycle legislation. However, there are other items that concern us at ABATE of Delaware including SB 51 which concerns Electronic Communication Devices (cell phone use). This bill would limit the look back period for subsequent like offenses to 2 years. The original bill specified 3 years. The current law has no look back limit. Instead of increasing the penalties for the offense, someone thought it was a good idea to limit how far back to look. We are opposed to this because the single biggest cause of crashes in the state is distracted driving. Our brothers and sisters are being maimed, injured, and killed because drivers can’t be bothered to wait or pull over to use their phones. The National Safety Council states that 52% of fatal crashes involve cell phone use and they believe that figure is under reported. The figures for drug and alcohol impaired are much less at a combined total of 47%. Isn’t it ironic that DUI/DWI’s don’t have this kind of sunset provision?

5

Next on our list is HB 152. This would increase the fee associated with any fine, penalty or forfeiture by 300%. If you should receive a traffic violation, the actual fine for the infraction is dwarfed by the added fees that you have to pay in addition to the original penalty fee. It seems as though this has been a way for the state and local police agencies to benefit their bottom lines. While I find the reasoning dubious at best, it clearly impacts those least able to afford the added fees more harshly. If you don’t or can’t pay the fine and fees your license will be suspended. Then exactly how are you supposed to get to work to pay the fines? Stay up to date by going to our web site: www.abateofde.com and follow us on Facebook by searching Abate of Delaware.

Everyday Heroes Melissa Coligan FLBD received the following email from Melissa Coligan of Stevensville, MD and thought it fitting for our Everyday Hero:

Hi, my name is Melissa Coligan. I reside in Stevensville with my husband Mike and our three beautiful children, Elizabeth (12), Mikey (10) and Matthew (9). I was born and raised in Long Island, NY but a tour in the Air Force landed me in Maryland. We have been on Kent Island for 11 years now. I am a Police Officer with the Montgomery County Police and small group leader with “Walking with Purpose” women’s bible study at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester. In August 2015, my world was rocked when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). It was a rough road but the fantastic doctors at Johns Hopkins and my beautiful sister, Marie, saved my life with a bone marrow transplant in November, 2015. Today, I am cancer-free and life is almost back to normal. I proudly accepted the nomination for Woman of the Year from Rich Catan, the 2016 Man of the Year, after attending several of his teams’ fundraisers when I came home from the hospital. With a new lease on life, I believe this is my opportunity and God’s plan to pay it forward. Many of the patients I met on my journey are still fighting for their lives. I want to celebrate, honor and remember those touched by cancer by raising funds to support the LLS mis-

sion!

Thank you to my amazing family and friends who tirelessly supported me while I was sick and are continuing to support me on team Missy’s Mojo! ****** FLBD is proud to name Melissa Coligan as our June 2017 Everyday Hero and wishes her continued success in her fight against cancer. We also salute those who continue to raise funds and awareness through Missy’s Mojo. Finally, FLBD wishes to acknowledge Melissa’s sister, Marie. Good job, Marie!

with Marty Sullivan

It was a muggy, warm morning in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada). I woke up to find that Shady (My 2009 Honda Shadow Aero) had made some friends in the night. Three full fledged Harley baggers were flanking her from every side. I thought, “They must be here for the ride too.” Because that’s why all of us were there, bikes from all over Canada and the Northeast USA. We were there for Cruise Don’t Bruise. Cruise Don’t Bruise – Motocyclistes Contre La Violence (Bikers Against Violence), is an annual ride held just outside of Ottawa, Canada. The ride supports the Eastern Ottawa Resource Center (EORC). The EORC offers community services to help end domestic abuse against women, elder abuse, and to help children who witness violence. The motorcycle ride raises awareness of the issues, as well as funds that stay in the community to support the EORC’s programs. Great folks doing great things for the women, the elderly, and the children of Ottawa. Sounds like a great time for a great cause, I’m in. I set out from the motel to find the meet up spot. Once I arrived, I was amazed at how organized everything was. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot there were 20 people in bright yellow smocks helping to guide everyone to their spot. First, they asked me if I was riding with a group. I said, “Yes!” They said, “Which one?” I said, “Cruise Don’t Bruise.” They said, “You can start the ‘no group’ line.” (lol) So they sent me to start a new line all by myself. At that moment I didn’t really understand, most of this was taking place in French, not English. Soon thereafter though, I saw ‘groups’ showing up 20-40 bikes at a time and then it all made sense. After breakfast, and some moving speeches, we set out on the ride. The roads were crap, evidence of Canada’s very long winters, but all the bikers were very easy going. I’d say it was about 80% cruisers, 10% sport bikes, and 10% adventure bikes. It was also about 60% male and 40% female riders. The men mostly had huge baggers with the stereo speakers blasting at 100%. The women were mostly riding 2 up, with the passenger skillfully moving around every which way trying to get that perfect photo of the experience. We were heading east out of Ottawa towards Hawkesbury. Our first stop was at a brewery where everyone took a 15-minute break. We had another stop at a firehouse, but I think we got there a little late. As soon as I got my helmet off and the battery changed in the camera, I hear engines firing up, and see bikes pulling away. I don’t know, maybe they were yelling, “Let’s go!” but again, the French, I was pretty much confused the whole day. We stopped for lunch at the Harley dealership in Hawkesbury. Most of us parked

across the street in a church parking lot. They treated us to lunch. I found some shade, pulled up a curb, sat down, and inhaled that food. ‘Twas awesome. After lunch, the ride turned west on a different route back towards Ottawa. I myself had to break off from the group at lunch and continue east, as I had to be in Montreal that evening for another event. All in all, it was a great experience. Great people riding for a great cause. And to see that many women commanding the back roads of Canada was a sight I’ll never forget. If you have a great, meaningful event, and it’s somewhere near where I am in the space/time continuum, I’ll be there. I hope you are to. Good Motorcycle Morning!

Gettysburg, PA’s Kayla Yaakov Is Youngest Person To Win Full-Size Motorcycle Racing 9-year-old motorcycle champion beats some of the fastest pros in the country. Kayla Yaakov began racing go karts at age 3 but didn't care for it much. Her enjoyment came from riding her 50cc dirt bike around the house. By age 4, after seeing videos of her dad racing, Kayla decided that is what she wants to do. At age 9, she has won over 150 races. Kayla races monthly and consistently finishes on the podium against adult pro racers down in Georgia at the Herrin Compound, which is a mini GP track owned by 2013 AMA Super Bike Champion, Josh Herrin. She has raced as far north as Michigan, down south in Alabama, and a few times in California. Her favorite track is Talladega in Alabama. Kayla’s biggest accomplishment to date is being the youngest ever to win full-size bike races. Kayla is not nervous about racing. She is more likely to get anxious over missing a race due to a mechanical problem or encountering something unforeseen. Her only disadvantage that she has encountered is not being permitted by all tracks and sanctioning bodies to compete due to insurance regulations. However, she was provided waivers by some which made her the youngest to ever compete and win on a regional and national level. So what is life like for a 9-year-old so dedicated to racing? Kayla is a 4th grade student at her local public school. Beyond her education, Kayla spends most weekends traveling on the road to compete in races. She dedicates ½ of the week to training and the rest of her free time is spent socializing with friends, playing with her dog and her little sister, playing guitar and, of course, playing video games. She feels if a girl wants to try racing they shouldn’t hesitate to try it rather than regret not doing it later in life. Sponsorship, of course, is always important and thankfully Kayla has found several sponsors who support her dedication and talent including One-X Custom Suits, Trackapalooza, All Motors LLC, Motodracing, Shoei Helmets, Mp13 Racing, Cad Realty, and Cad

Cycles. But the sponsorship search is ongoing. Racing is extremely expensive and time consuming for Kayla and her family. Some of her videos generate over a half million views which provides sponsors with high-visibility exposure. Both seasonal and race-torace sponsors are always welcome. Follow Kayla on social media at: https://www.facebook.com/kayla.yaakov Instagram kayla_yaakov Interested sponsors can contact Kayla at davidyaa@msn.com.

Valerie Thompson World’s Fastest Female Motorcycle Racer Scottsdale, AZ 1. How did you become involved in racing? My story is no different than most first-time motorcycle owners. I got hooked on the fast response of the throttle and started racing on the street. It didn’t take long to realize the danger of street racing, so I began racing at our local track in Phoenix, AZ. Shortly thereafter, I began racing a full schedule at the All Harley Davidson Racing Association throughout the US. This experience opened my eyes to what was possible in a safe racing environment and I never looked back. 2. Did you find that as a woman you had unique hurdles or barriers to overcome? Yes. There were many, some I’ll share, and some I won’t. During the early part of my career, I faced criticism for our aggressive marketing program when I promoted just two land speed records. I heard comments like “you don’t have as many records as so-and-so” or “women can’t handle the highest speeds in rough salt conditions.” Fortunately, my record speaks for itself and I proved the naysayers wrong. 3. Do you ever feel like giving up? That’s an easy question and the answer is a resounding “YES.” I have certainly felt the pressure of seeking sponsorship to keep my dream alive. Any racer will tell you their full-time job is seeking sponsorship. Land speed racing is the most difficult form of racing to find sponsors. There is no real prize money, just a record. We have to seek out sponsors who understand the significance of what we accomplish and how to promote it at their own expense … a very difficult task to say the least. I focus on the support of what I have accomplished so far and the encouragement I receive from my husband and my dedicated fans I hear from daily via social media. I also have a PR writer who has worked with me for over 6 years. He has over 20 years of motorsports experience, working with the NHRA, INDY CAR, Trans Am and other sanctioning racing bodies. He’s not afraid to give an alternative perspective when I get caught up in too many details. We argue a lot, but he provides an “outside” perspective that I need when times are tough. 4. Do you ever simply ride for the joy of riding or do you prefer speed and adrenaline? I defiantly prefer high speed and the adrenaline rush of racing. I wish I could do more “pleasure riding,” but my racing and celebrity appearances prevent much time for that activity. 5. With such a busy schedule, how do you find time for community involvement? In the past I donated my time to the “Hope Kids” (Children’s Phoenix Hospital). It’s very rewarding to support and inspire children overcoming personal challenges. I am the

FAST LANE BIKER

18

recipient of American Woman Riders Association Community Hero Award. Unfortunately, now my time is spent on the road and preparing for testing/race events. 6. Do you find that sponsors equally-embrace women racers? I can’t speak for all sponsors, but VTR sponsors such as Martech Services Company and Vision Wheel have been very supportive of providing equal opportunities for women on the track. I have to say “yes and no” to this question. It all depends on the sponsor’s target audience and the understanding of their purchase behavior. Some sponsors are smarter than others and appreciate the value of a female brand ambassador their consumers can relate too. Other sponsors may see value in sponsoring something newsworthy to the worldwide press. 7. What do you like/admire most about yourself? My loyalty to sponsors in doing everything I can to deliver value for their sponsorship of my team. I have “paid my own way out of my own pocket” to get where I am today. My husband, Ray, and I do everything possible to ensure sponsors are happy with their ROI. I am so proud of all my staff who have stood by me for so many years. 8. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? Talk about a tough question! I guess that I would be less demanding of my crew and support staff. I get real intense at times and expect everyone to work harder than I do at delivering promised results. I hire great people, but if were honest, I push them a little too hard at times. 9. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? My shoe and clothing collection. I love high fashion shoes/clothing and occasionally lose all sense of reality when it comes to my next purchase. 10. What is the most awesome thing you own? My husband Ray. He is my best friend, supporter and best looking guy in AZ - and my Maltese dog, Speedy (she’s just as fast as I am). 11. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Q: What made you infatuated with risking your life racing motorcycles? A: I love achieving what has never been done.

19

www.fastlanebikerdelmar va.com

12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Richard Branson. He challenges everything and always comes out on top. 13. What would you say to female riders who are considering the world of racing? Believe in yourself and never listen to detractors. If you dream it, you can make it happen. “World’s Fastest Female Motorcycle Racer” Valerie Thompson is known as one of the countries best motorsports ambassadors and “America’s Queen of Speed.” Valerie created history at the 2016 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials piloting the Team “7” Racing Streamliner to the “The Fastest Time of the Meet” award with a speed of 304.263 mph (489.66 KMH). She is the first female motorcycle rider over 300 mph. Her racing resume includes seven land speed records, membership in six 200 MPH Land Speed Racing Clubs and being named the first female member of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club board of directors in 2017. These stellar accomplishments and personal best speed of 217.7 mph (350.53 KM/H) on her BMW S 1000 RR, led to Valerie being featured in racing film documentaries, books and even a Super Bowl commercial, earning her moniker “America’s Queen of Speed.” Valerie and Team “7” return to Bonneville in 2017 with one goal --- breaking the world record of 376 mph to become the world’s fastest motorcycle! Team leader, Denis Manning, designed the “7” Streamliner, aka BUB “7.” Manning and his accomplished crew have held the motorcycle speed record on two prior occasions. Team “7” Racing owners John Jans and Joe Harralson are confident Manning and Valerie will reclaim the record for a third time. Valerie is also open to partnership considerations and representing sponsors as their Brand Ambassador.

Carolyn DeFalco LOCATION: MILLSTONE, NJ 60 YEARS

Carolyn DeFalco began riding in 1978 and her very first bike was a 400 4-cylinder Honda. By 1979, she purchased her first Harley-Davidson® Sportster. Since then, Carolyn has never been without a motorcycle and has owned Road Kings, Fat Boys, Street Glides and a full dresser. Her current ride, a 2016 CVO Street Glide, is her 18th motorcycle. Carolyn is an Elk and an active member of their motorcycle committee. She also rides with a local group called the New Jersey Motorcycle Cruisers. She has traveled to many states in the U.S. and Canada but gravitates to the Northeast in the summer, particularly Vermont, New Hampshire, upstate New York and Canada. Her longest ride was cross country from Long Island to California and down the coast to Mexico. She is married and her husband rides a 2006 Road King. Sadly, his very busy towing business precludes him from any significant riding time. When asked what advice she would pass on to new or inexperienced riders, Carolyn says, “If you don’t feel it in your heart find another passion.”

Strawberry Cucumber Salad with

Honey Raspberry Vinaigrette Summertime has arrived and that means warmer temperatures. This cool, crisp and fresh salad will get you through hot days. The strawberries pair beautifully and delightfully with the contrast to the vegetables. The crispness of the salad is delivered by your cucumber and onion. Feta cheese pulls all of the flavors together while also presenting a savory creamy taste. The dressing is light, refreshing, and tart but sweet which accentuates the natural flavor of the ingredients. To make this as a side dish to accompany a dinner increase the amounts of the ingredients while yielding a smaller portion size.

INSTRUCTIONS

Get Women Riding Campaign The AMA Get Women Riding campaign features articles, videos and events designed to get more women riding motorcycles. "Although motorcycling is a fun and accessible choice, riders must prepare with respect to proper training, safety and, of course, bike considerations," said AMA Board of Directors Chair Maggie McNally-Bradshaw. "As true as that is for all motorcyclists, it's even more important for women riders. Women and girls face additional difficulties in finding bikes and gear that fit them, getting certain salespeople to take them seriously and – the big one – overcoming the societal stereotype that motorcycling is something only for men. The AMA Get Women Riding campaign will help change that." The AMA Get Women Riding campaign is inspired by Jeanne Clendenon, a prolific motorcyclist and longtime AMA member. Clendenon, a member of the Retreads Motorcycle Club, earned many riding awards, including completing the U.S. Four Corners Tour in 21 days and winning the Retreads long-distance award four years in a row. Clendenon passed away in 2011. A recent gift from her estate contributed to this campaign. The AMA has a long history of welcoming women to the sport, from its early affiliation with the Motor Maids, a premier motorcycling group for female riders, to more recent conferences designed specifically for women. The AMA Get Women Riding campaign includes a number of initiatives to continue the tradition of attracting more women to motorcycling. "We've put together four videos – public service announcements – that promote riding to women by women," McNally-Bradshaw said. "These videos focus on the sport, camaraderie and individual enjoyment that comes from riding. We encourage all of our members and partners in the industry to share them and help spread the word." The videos are hosted on the AMA's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/AmericanMotorcyclist. In addition, several profiles about prominent women riders and articles by women riders are featured on the AMA website. Extract of article courtesy of American Motorcycle Association.

Women Motorcycling History

Making Their Mark: From the Early Years to Today In the early days of motorcycling -- around the late 1800s and early 1900s when motorcycles were little more than bicycles with motors attached -- Americans bought the machines for transportation, not recreation. Families who could not afford cars could still afford motorcycles so it wasn't all that uncommon to see women riders. The price difference between a motorcycle and a car was substantial. A 1909 Harley-Davidson motorcycle cost about $325 while a basic Ford Model T was priced at a hefty $850 -- about one year’s salary in those days. But with assembly-line production, Ford got the price of a Model T down to $440 in 1915, putting cars within reach of many more people. As the price dropped to just $380 in 1927, even more cars were sold, and, as a result, fewer motorcycles. Since that time, motorcycles have been chosen primarily for recreation and primarily by men. Despite those developments, pioneering women riders – including Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, Theresa Wallach and Bessie Stringfield – made their marks in the motorcycling world. The Van Buren sisters were among the first to ride coast to coast, traveling aboard an Indian Power Plus in 1916. They were also the first women to ride motorized vehicles to the summit of Pikes Peak, accomplishing that feat in the same year. In the 1930s and 1940s, Theresa Wallach of England became well known for racing and long-distance riding, besides serving as a dispatch rider for the British Army during World War II. Back in America, African-American Bessie Stringfield made eight solo cross-country trips during the 1930s and 1940s, riding her motorcycle in the Deep South at a time when it was risky to do so. Women! They’re Everywhere! The US Department of Labor reports women own 10 million businesses and account for $1.4 trillion in receipts. Women are more likely than men to have a bachelor’s degree by age 29. The Motorcycle Industry Council reports women motorcycle ownership increased 50% from 2004 to 2015. In fact, you might have noticed more and more women riding cruisers in recent years. Why are things changing? People naturally categorize things. Categories help us understand the world around us and help us make decisions based on those understandings. The IRS can determine tax liabilities and the grocery store can organize its shelves. Categories make things more interesting. Imagine if everyone looked and acted the same – it would be horribly boring. We can safely conclude that categories improve understanding and create variety. But there are trade-offs. For one, some things don’t always fit perfectly into a category. Take the names Chris and Pat. Both have male and female qualities. Is one more female than the other? How about within the motorcycle community? Historically, men have been categorized as the “rider” and women as the “passenger.” But as women become bread winners, professionals, clients, consumers and household decision-makers, businesses and service providers are adapting marketing strategies to these new norms. Women’s desire to ride their own bikes, and having the means to buy their own, is changing the face of today’s motorcyclist and the market trends serving them. There is a burning question that is often asked but not clearly categorized: Is your motorcycle a “he” or a “she?” Some people name their bikes like musicians name their instruments. Is your bike’s name closer to Bertha or Fred? Do women’s bikes tend to be male and men’s bikes tend to be female? Let’s find out! Visit LadyLaw.com on Facebook @ladylawattorney for our two-question survey and we’ll report the results in next month’s column!

Amanda Marie Knapp Changing Perceptions Many people have grown up surrounded by motorcycles, and their family members are the ones who encourage them to learn to ride. When Amanda Marie Knapp was growing up, her dad challenged her to face her fear of riding head on and never let her use as an excuse the fact that she was a girl. Knapp believes that learning to ride and keep up with the guys taught her lifelong lessons that have helped her to become successful in both her professional and personal lives. Today, Knapp is an assistant vice provost for academic standards and policy administration at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She has been riding nearly 30 years. Her first bike was a Honda 70, and today she rides a KTM 300 XCW. Courtesy of American Motorcycle Association.

Celebrating all women who ride regardless of age or their ride of choice.

Laura Conti a/k/a crazyladyadventurer Melbourne, Australia Laura Conti has been riding a scooter she calls “Ruby Scooter” for 6+ years and riding a BMW F700 GS for about 6 months. She loved riding her little red 50 cc scooter to work but wanted something more - more from the ride and more from her career. That’s when she made the decision to quit her job and purchase the BMW. Laura began planning adventures which included riding across parts of Australia. She always enjoyed riding and fondly remembers her childhood days when her father would take her out around the farm on ag bikes and a 1970’s postie bike. As an adult, she was an ‘urban’ person and scooter riding was the quick and cheap way to get around the city. “The adventure bike allows me to get back to nature,” says Laura. “My BMW is my escape, my meditation, my adventure buddy.” Laura is a Corporate Chartered Accountant by trade but has a growing profile as an adventure speaker for corporate groups. She tends to ride solo, working around corporate and speaking commitments. She prefers long adventure rides typically 400km+ (approx. 250 miles) per day. Laura also enjoys overnight trips and moto-camping for the night. Her last big trip in January was 9000km (approx. 5,592 miles) across part of Australia. When not out looking for the next adventure, Laura spends time updating her blog and Instagram account @crazyladyadventure. At age 37, she plans to continue her adventures and is now working out what is next in her accounting career. FLBD admires Laura’s courage and wishes her the best of luck in her endeavors. Keep us posted!
