ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator With Spring upon us, the weather is warming and many of us have put a few miles on our trusty steeds as temperatures near the 70’s. Well if this is global warming, I say bring it on. Along with the rising temperatures, State Legislatures are again in session. Here in the First State there are two pieces of Legislation that ABATE of Delaware is working on. The first is HB 14 introduced by Rep. Sean Lynn (D-Dover) and co-sponsored by Sen F. Gary Simpson (R-Milford). Sadly, this is just another attempt to mandate bikers to wear helmets. As of this writing the Committee will hear this in two days (15 March). We have been aggressive with this bill, contacting and meeting with the members of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee to stop this before it gains any traction.
5
The other legislation ABATE of Delaware is working on is SB 12. This would allow the use of LED accent lighting. Unlike the Mandatory Helmet Law bill, it has wide support in both the House and Senate with 19 Co-sponsors. This has already passed the Senate and has been assigned to the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. Our only concern is that it will allow only orange and white lighting. We are working with our friends in Dover to amend this to allow for a greater spectrum of colors. As always you can stay up to date on matters of concern in the motorcycle community by going to our web page: www.abateofde.com and by following us on Facebook at ABATE of Delaware.

Everyday Heroes American Legion Riders Post 223 • Sykesville, MD Raising Funds to Assist Severely Injured Veterans The American Legion Riders consist of current members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion. True to the Legion’s grassroots tradition, each chapter manages its programs at the post level where the best ideas are born. American Legion Riders, Sykesville, MD Post 223’s current membership has undertaken fundraising to support Homes For Our Troops (HFOT), a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds mortgage-free, specially-adapted homes nationwide for severely injured Veterans post-9/11, to enable them to rebuild their lives. ALR 223 is comprised of a very small core group of members, around 9 or 10, who attend meetings and organize events and fundraisers, such as their annual bike show held each April in Taylorsville, MD, to benefit HFOT. Since 2004, HFOT has built 229 specially-adapted homes nationwide. Their goal is to build a home for every Veteran who qualifies for one of their specially-adapted homes. HFOT has received Charity Navigator’s highest rating of 4 stars every year since 2008. Charity Watch has awarded HFOT an A rating and included it on its list of Top-Rated Military & Veterans Charities, and is the reason ALR 223 strongly supports this charity. Over 90% of all the money raised goes towards these homes. Members of ALR 223 have personally attended key ceremonies to award a qualifying Veteran with a mortgage-free home. In 2016, ALR 223’s annual bike show allowed for a $5000 donation towards Army Sgt. Kevin Jaye’s new home in Hagerstown, MD. In 2015, ALR 223 provided $3000 in funds raised, which is pretty awesome for such a small organization of hard-working, dedicated bikers who all have full-time jobs and responsibilities. Currently, HFOT has 82 home construction projects underway in the USA, 7 have been built in Maryland and 1 is underway in Gettysburg, PA. ALR 223 invites everyone to come out and support their 5th Annual Bike Show on April 29th, rain or shine, at Vanessa’s Corner Pub in Taylorsville, MD. Although they are praying for great riding weather on that date, it will be an afternoon of fun, food and drinks regardless. Vanessa’s proudly donates 10% of its receipts to the charity as well. FLBD salutes American Legion Riders Post 223 Sykesville, MD for their dedication and inspiration.

DAVID P. WHETSTONE
Moments
LOCATION: FRANKFORD • DE 70 YEARS
David Whetstone began riding on dirt bikes when he was 18 years old. He graduated to a Honda 450 which he sold to purchase a 78 Honda Super Sport 750 F. From there he purchased a 650 V Star 2000 and sold that bike to purchase a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. He converted that bike into a trike and has logged more than 98,000 miles. Just this year, David purchased a 2001 Royal Star Venture he uses for fundraisers. At age 70, it’s easy to conclude that David enjoys riding. It comes at little surprise that David’s father rode a Suzuki 185 dirt bike at 70+ years! David is a member of the Masonic Brotherhood Riders Southern Chapter in Delaware. He also participates in a variety of charity rides for an array of beneficiaries such as Special Olympics, Ride to the Tide, the Shriners Hospital for Children, Dover Air Force rides, Toys for Tots, Home of the Brave and 9/11 in Ocean City MD. He enjoys riding anywhere in the USA because “there is so much to see.” Rides have taken him to Rhode Island, Lake George (Americade), Niagara Falls, Cleveland, the Hall of Rock and Roll, Nashville, Chattanooga , Florida Keys and Seneca Rocks in West Virginia. He attends events such as bike week in Myrtle Beach, Gettysburg, the Outer Banks, Wildwood in New Jersey, Delmarva Bike Week, and OCbikefest, to name a few. David served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1966. Until his retirement, he owned and operated a design and drafting company. He was a Senior Piping Designer with more than 30 years of design and leadership experience in pharmaceutical, chemical, food processing and refinery design plant layouts. When asked what advice or words of wisdom he would pass on to younger riders, David replied, “Enjoy riding and seeing the scenery because life passes you by. Be SAFE. Riding heightens your senses and connects you with nature as well as other riders from around the United States.” David also suggests keeping your bike maintained and he credits Loaded Gun Customs in Selbyville, DE for keeping his bikes running so that he can ride worry-free.

Every day without an accident gives a rider a false sense of comfort. You begin to believe it can’t happen to you. You get desensitized and might even feel invincible. Low-Sugar Moist Blueberry Bread I created this recipe particularly for all my grandparents. It is sweet but low in sugar so it is perfect for those who are cautious about their sugar intake. The bread provides springtime fruity freshness by using vibrant blueberries, which also provide natural sweetness, and by also using the lovely lemon zest. Moistness is assured in your bread by using dairy ingredients and blueberry yogurt provides moisture and an extra blueberry flavor additive.
Prep Time: 15 mins. • Bake Time: 1 Hour Yield : 1 Loaf • Serving Size: 1 Slice
This bread is perfect for breakfast, brunch, snack or dessert. For an extra savory treat, try spreading butter over a warmed slice!
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly oil an 8x3x2 loaf pan. 2. In a medium bowl lightly spoon flour into a measuring cup, leveling with a knife. Add baking soda and salt. Whisk all together. 3. In a separate large bowl combine sweetener and butter and beat with a mixer at medium speed until blended. Add eggs 1 at time blending each one well into the mixture. Next add yogurt, lemon zest, vanilla, honey and milk until all is blended. 4. Add flour mixture slowly beating until moist. The consistency will be thick and heavy. 5. Fold in frozen blueberries. 6. Spoon mixture into loaf pan, filling approximately ¾ way full. Bake for 1 hour or until wooden pick is clean. Cool for 10 minutes in pan on a wire rack.

10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? I appear to have a gift for retain/recall of random information. I get asked, “How the <blank> did you know that?” Most of the time, I honestly don’t know how I know. 11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Music engineer and/or sound designer. Maybe a Brian Eno / Daniel Lanois kinda character? 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Valentino Rossi. I’d like to know what it’s like to be that freaking good at riding…and speak Italian. 13.
What would you do if you were able to retire? Surf on uncrowded waves in warm water.

‘Trixy’ Tracy “Trixy” Curtis Alexandria, VA
Age: 52
Tracy (“Trixy”) Curtis has been riding for 30 years off and on. She first became interested in motorcycles when her father purchased a Honda 150. Tracy was 15 years old and he taught her to ride on that Honda. Her father also had a 250cc Suzuki and eventually added a Honda Goldwing to his riding history. “He was very supportive of my riding,” said Tracy. “When I purchased my last bike, my Dad’s house was my first stop. I had to show him and he was really proud of me. If not for my Father, I’m not sure if I would be riding. I got the bug at a young age.” Sadly, Tracy’s father passed away in December, 2012. She continues to ride because she loves it. Tracy, who until recently lived in Arizona, is a single mother with 2 grown sons and is employed as Director of Client Relationships in the Aerospace and Defense Industry. She credits riding with providing her the outlet to relieve stress. She has also made many great friends through the riding community. For the past 7 years, Tracy’s ride has been a 1997 Suzuki VZ Marauder 800. She has also owned a Honda 150 and a Kawasaki 250. Her partner, John Sutton, also rides and recently purchased a BMW. John gave Tracy his 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan VM900 Classic when she moved to VA. In Arizona, she would take off for more than 3 hours to ride in the mountains in Show Low. With her recent relocation, she is looking for new places to ride. The weather may be colder, but there’s no shortage of scenic routes in VA! In addition to riding, Tracy enjoys camping, cooking, dancing and live music ranging from classical to classic rock.
