THE FLBD MOBILE APP Why You Should Download This APP!

NOW HERE THIS! Do I have your attention? Good! You are not going to want to miss this! How would you like to be privy to what is going on in real time? Let’s say we’re at bike week in Ocean City, MD and for a window of about 1 hour, you can do a meet and greet with one of your favorite biker bands or get ½ price admission at the inlet or get 30% off at your favorite vendor or enter to win prizes? What if one of the many restaurants decides to provide bikers with 10% off their food bill? How about if there is a flash sale on event t-shirts in a limited time frame? Instead of kicking yourself for not being in the right place at the right time to get that freebie, discount, service or once-in-a-lifetime photo op, you will be the one to say “Hell YES! I was there!” FLBD is always asking “what can we do for our readers and advertisers?” It isn’t about us - it’s about promoting biker-to-biker business and cutting through the stereotypical image of yesterday’s biker, being acknowledged as an economical force, and being treated as such. We want YOU to worry about the ride, where to go, what to see, how often you can get out - and we want you to NOT stress over options, information or availability. Introducing the FLBD Mobile App! This FREE download (because FLBD loves FREE stuff) will allow you to do a multitude of tasks quickly, easily and remotely. In addition to typical tasks such as visit our website, events calendar, post to our Facebook Fan Page, download our electronic V.I.B. Card or simply contact us,

the FLBD Mobile App allows users to receive notifications. In other words, we have the ability to reach you near and far. If we’re at an event, we can send out a notification that reaches just those bikers in whatever radius that is logical with news pertaining to the event or surrounding areas that are time specific. If we have news that can benefit anybody, we can reach users within a 50, 500, 5,000 or 50,000 mile radius. How cool is that? Now you will know what we know as soon as we find out! So download the FREE FLBD Mobile App today via iTunes or Play Store. Don’t miss another incredible moment this season! For more information, look for our FLBD Mobile App ad in this issue of FLBD! OH… and we will randomly select winners from the downloads and award prizes because that’s how FLBD rolls! Let’s get the riding season started!! Keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

ASK THE ATTORNEY BY: LEE D. GABER, ESQUIRE •

1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com www.cycleattorney.com As we begin to thaw out from this long, cold, wet winter, we are all no doubt eager to welcome spring and get back on our motorcycles and ride. The most important thing you need to do before getting back out there is check your policies to make sure you are adequately insured. For those of you who read my column often I am not going to beat a dead horse and explain this in detail as I have done so many times. For those of you who are unsure what coverage to best protect you, your bike and your passengers, feel free to contact my office and I will personally discuss this matter with you. However, it is also important to know under what situations you may, or may not, be covered under and it is best to know beforehand. Let’s start with, Travel - If you have plans to travel to another country with your motorcycle, it is very important that you contact your insurance company to find out if they will extend coverage on your bike while riding in that country. Just like most auto policies, once you take your bike into another country there are often exceptions that void any and all coverages on your motorcycle. If your planning a long trip within the United States, you can check with your insurance carrier about “trip interruption” coverage which will cover your transportation, food and lodging if you get stranded during your trip.

valid insurance policies covering your motorcycle while it is in the process of being transported. This situation can be easily avoided by contacting your insurance carrier and advising them of your intentions before you begin to transport your motorcycle. Test Drives, as many of you are now test driving new motorcycles in anticipation of the riding season, it is crucially important, before you begin your test drive, for you to ask your salesman if the dealer will cover any damage to the motorcycle that might occur during a test drive. This is important because many personal motorcycle insurance policies will not provide collision, or liability coverage, while you are test driving a new motorcycle. I have had clients who unfortunately have found this out the hard way. Although in my experience, most dealers will cover any damage that may occur during the test drive, it is much better to know the answer to this question before you test drive someone else’s $20,0000 motorcycle. These potential pitfalls can be avoided by simply taking the necessary steps before participating in any of the above activities. Remember, an ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure. As usual, I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on these topic or others, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@ cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLELAW (1-888-2925352).

Towing – Many insurance companies will not provide liability and/or collision coverage to your motorcycle if you have placed it onto a trailer and are towing it behind your vehicle. Additionally, if you hire someone to transport your motorcycle, your insurance company may have exclusions allowing them to avoid liability if your motorcycle is damaged while in the process of being towed or transported. Further, do not automatically assume that whoever is transporting your vehicle has insurance that will cover your motorcycle while it is in the process of being transported. If you do not check into this situation before having your motorcycle transported, Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire you may find yourself in a situation where there are no The one and only “Cycle Attorney”

ROGER VANDERPOOL

Senior Moments

CASA GRANDE, AZ • 62 YEARS

Roger Vanderpool has been riding since the age of 13 and has enjoyed an eclectic collection of bikes since that time. His first bike was a Honda 90. It didn’t take too long to move up to a Honda 305 Dream, then on to a BSA 650 (which he really liked), then a Kawasaki 750 Triple (which he feels is probably the fastest bike he owned), then on to a 900 Kawasaki, a Honda Goldwing, a Honda Interstate, a couple of Honda dirt bikes, a couple of Harleys and now owns a Victory Cross Country. Roger has covered most of America on two wheels and in October, completed a 6500 mile ride through 13 states in 13 days. Roger is a career Law Enforcement Officer. At one time, he was a police motorcycle officer in Indiana. Two of his more memorable positions over his 40-year career are as Sheriff of Pinal County Arizona and Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Roger and his wife, Valerie, have been married for 41 years. They both enjoy touring the country via motorcycle. Roger also is involved with the sponsors of the annual Ride For The Warrior in Arizona, a two-day motorcycle gathering and music festival benefiting the Pinal County Veterans Memorial and various veteran organizations in the state of Arizona. FLBD is proud to feature Roger Vanderpool as their featured senior rider and we thank him for his service.

A CE T RIKE ACE Trike evolved from the custom motorcycle shop established by Jeff Miller in 2003. As the need for custom chopper work declined, Jeff took notice that the aging baby boomer generation was now requesting a new type of customized motorcycle - a trike conversion. Over the past decade, ACE has forged relationships and become authorized dealers for all major brands of trike conversions, allowing for one stop shopping for anyone in the market to trike their bike. ACE has developed proprietary installation, testing and quality control processes to assure a consistently high quality product on every trike build. ACE works only on trikes; no other equipment (no generators, no cars, no trucks, not even two wheelers). They pay their techs by the hour and not the job allowing each tech to spend the time necessary to achieve the proper fit and finish that the customer deserves. Additionally, each trike build must pass 4 quality control processes and 2 test drives prior to the customer taking delivery. It may sound like overkill, but to achieve a high quality, roadworthy and safe trike, it must be done. There are 3 major differences between the ACE built trike and a factory unit - ride, handling and comfort. ACE’s experience allows them to match the proper steering kit to each independent rear suspension system that they install. This offers their customers the ultimate in driver and passenger comfort through a super smooth ride and excellent handling on corners. ACE offers more than a dozen body styles for both the Harley FLH/T models and the Honda Goldwing GL1800, as well as trike conversions for many other motorcycle makes and models. Their options and accessories are vast and allow for each customer to build a truly unique custom trike that will turn heads everywhere that they ride. Ready to Trike YOUR bike? Bufalo’s • La Sabana Tarrazu The weather is finally breaking and plenty of riding days are upon us. Hopefully you properly maintained your bike and you are ready for action. This month I travelled pretty far to find a great place to eat. I didn’t ride or drive – I flew. That’s right, I flew all the way to the beautiful country of Costa Rica where I visited with my future in-laws and escaped the madness of working for a living. Trust me, I deserved the break. I don’t know much Spanish but I had a great travel guide, Jessica, my future wife. Upon landing in Costa Rica, I was promptly whisked away on a (let’s call it) interesting journey through the streets of San Jose in an effort to reach my destination of San Marcos Tarrazu. During my two hour journey, we did find the best part of my trip. Yep, you guessed it - THE A-TEAM VAN!! Imagine my surprise when we turned down a side street and there she sat - an almost perfect replica from my favorite TV show. We pulled over and waited a few moments but Mr. T never showed up. So, slightly disappointed, we drove on. I could go on for pages about the pounds and pounds of food I was fed over my stay. (Remember, I was meeting my future in laws, aunts, uncles, etc., and every one of them had to prepare a meal to welcome me. They made me feel very welcome!) And I know you don’t want to read about how, while most of you were battling a blizzard, I was visiting a volcano and drinking beer after beer on a perfect beach in 70 degree weather while stuffing my face with fresh fish, rice and beans. Do you? By the way, all that was in the town of Manuel Antinio and it was awesome and definitely recommended if you plan to visit Costa Rica. Most of the locals speak English, the beach isn’t overly crowded, prices are reasonable, everyone seemed friendly and helpful, and the views are insane. It afforded me the opportunity to watch a monkey eat fresh fruit and then walk 10 ft. to soak up sun in the ocean (me not the monkey).

Anyway, the venue I am going to review is, decidedly, my favorite. I’m not sure if it had anything to do with the booze flowing or relaxing with my new family members or, just maybe, it could have been the food. I can’t remember what I ordered but I was served a huge slab of beef, topped with a mushroom sauce, with a side of mini potatoes, and fresh cooked vegetables served on a huge banana leaf. I am almost certain the meat was a rib eye but only the cook knows for sure. The name of the venue was Bufalo’s - yes, one “f” - located in the town of La Sabana Tarrazu, right off the main drag. Those are the best directions I can provide but, if you are going to Costa Rica and you want to find Bufalo’s, you can visit them on Facebook or you can ask anyone in the town and they will know exactly where to direct you. The beef was extremely fresh (honestly, it could have been butchered that day). In fact, everything was fresh. It truly was the best restaurant I visited on my trip. So if you get the opportunity to visit La Sabana Tarrazu in Costa Rica be sure to look up Bufalo’s Parrilla La Casa De Las Carnes. You can’t go wrong. The staff was awesome and took care of all of us and the tab was very reasonable. The dollar has slightly more value at this time so you can get more bang for your US bucks! I know not everyone can travel to Costa Rica and I doubt many of you will, but, if you can, try it. Learn Spanish or take someone that knows Spanish fluently and just go. It’s an amazing country. You can have the tourist experience if you want or a crazy city experience (which isn’t for me), or you can have a mix of basic laid back lifestyle and some tourist stuff mixed in with it. I had a great time, and survived meeting my future in-laws. What’s even better is that they are still okay with me marrying their daughter! Crazy, huh? Until next time remember, it’s just another day in paradise. Oh wait, I was there. So trust me, it can be just another day in paradise.

The Story of The Batman Bike Andrew Miller, owner of Batman Handyman Services in Purcell, VA, recently unveiled his “Batman Bike,” which became an instant crowd-pleaser and 1st Place winner at The 2015 Timonium Motorcycle Show. Although its humble beginnings were no more than crates of rusted chrome in a friend’s garage, Andrew noted old-school style fenders and knew something special was about to happen. John Longo (Longo Motorcycle Seats, Rockville, MD) created a custom handmade seat cover that, as legend suggests, consists of Madagascar bat fur. John Owings (Custom Cycle Studio, Hamilton, VA) added two skilled airbrush and paint artists to incorporate details such as the bat signal that shines down from under the bat mask horn cover, The Joker’s card, Two-Face’s coin, and the Frenched-in glowing eyes of the Batman tail light.

As you might expect, mechanically this work of art runs like a Bat out of hell with a modified race carburetor and tuned radius exhaust, matched to the engine. The result is a bike that runs as good as it looks. Also as expected, the Batman Bike is high tech with features such as WiFi XKGlow LED lights controllable from the mobile bat phone. To finish the project, Andrew and John Owings created the custom Batman helmet. For the complete story and more pictures of the Batman Bike, please visit the Batman Handyman Service Facebook page.

Sgt. Cyndee Kapes joined the US Army Reserves in October of 1981. She was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 and, after 16 years of services and determined 100% Submitted by Walt Hunsicker disabled, honorably discharged. Although Kapes faces overwhelming health issues including fibromyalgia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, severe back issues and arthritis in her knees, back and hips, she continues to ride everywhere with her fiancé, Walt Hunsicker, in order to support and honor fallen heroes, support our troops, and promote awareness with respect to our homeless veterans.

Cyndee Kapes

When Kapes was unable to do so, Hunsicker participated in the Soldiers Cross Memorial carrying Cyndee’s helmet and boots in order to honor America’s fallen heroes. They receive numerous requests from all over the U.S. to ride to various states and participate in their military support events. Both consider their participation a great honor but for Kapes, not only is she able to honor a fellow brother or sister’s memory, she is able to give back to the family and friends that have lost so much. Also, devoting so much of herself has helped her with her PTSD issues. “For her service and what she continues to do for our living and deceased veterans,” says Hunsicker, “She is MY everyday hero.” We agree and thank you for sharing with us!

Tracy Hausknecht MDA Ride for Life Event Coordinator 1. How long have you been involved with MDA Ride for Life and what do you do in that capacity? I have been with MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) for approximately 2 years. Ride for Life is the largest Harley-Davidson Fundraiser for MDA in the country and it is my job to ensure the event stays relevant and grows every year. 2. Where were you born and where do you currently reside? I was born in Allentown, PA (cue the Billy Joel song). For the past 10 years, Upper Milford Township is my home that I share with my family, 2 dogs and 5 chickens. 3. What do you like/admire most about yourself? I am a little bit crazy, but that is what makes me a great event planner! 4. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? I would ride a Harley to work instead of driving a Mom SUV. 5. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? I have two teenage girls that play club volleyball, who has any money left???? 6. Where would you most like to reside if you could? After this winter, Belize is looking pretty good!

My smartphone, I can work from anywhere, organize anything and have the world at my fingertips. 10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Do you ride? No, but I am considering learning and I think Dennis Schaeffer would be an awesome teacher. 11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? It has always been my dream job to be an event planner. I am living that dream! 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? My dog‌ freedom to sleep on the chairs, free food, run around all day and have your belly rubbed, no cares in the world except that stupid squirrel, that is the life.

7. Who is your fictional hero? I guess she is not fictional, but I love Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side. 8. Who do you consider your real life hero? The parents of the clients we serve at MDA. Being a teenager’s mom is complicated, but imagine adding the medical concerns, doctors visits and round the clock care that these

Hopefully that will be worked out by the next session.

ABATE of Maryland has had a busy month. We’ve been lobbying hard in Annapolis as we join together with the Maryland Coalition of Clubs and U.S. Defenders to walk the halls of Annapolis each Monday night and beyond. All of ABATE’s bills have sponsors and co-sponsors and are waiting to be heard in committees. Our position papers have been completed and we are ready to roll.

In addition to staying vigilant, ABATE continues to work closely with organizations across the country in order to make our team more well versed and efficient. Valuable resources harvested by each state should be used throughout the motorcycle community in order to make ABATE’s mission more successful. Each state should share their successes and the methods used to produce that success. By aiding each other, ABATE becomes a force to be reckoned with. The Coalition of Clubs, U.S. Defenders, MRF, AMA and ABATE of Maryland have become strong allies and the cumulative years of experience that is now shared has proven the value of strength in numbers. We are very fortunate to have each other and we should all be grateful for this opportunity to work hard together and to fight battles together as one.

Last month the helmet bill was heard in the Senate and it was received well. Our Profiling, Motorcycle Only Checkpoint, and Right Of Way bills have been heard and we will publish those results as soon as they are available. Turnout is vital to all of ABATE’s hearings. Every battle requires the full support of the motorcycle community. ABATE also works hard to stop bills that would negatively affect motorcyclists. It’s not always about what you win. Paramount to our cause is the legal issues in the background that are stopped because of our joint efforts. For instance, a bill was introduced by the Prince George Delegation that would increase fines from $500 to $1000 for MOTORCYCLISTS ONLY who exceed the speed limit by 40 miles an hour and greater. That bill was pulled as a direct result of ABATE’s dedication to stop it. We also supported a bill that was introduced by the Prince George Delegation that would create a motorcycle EMT. This would allow easier access through traffic and along a highway shoulder to reach the scene of an accident. The response time would have been much quicker. Unfortunately, this bill was pulled before it was introduced due to fiscal issues.

What does the future hold for ABATE? Everything we are willing to fight for. Everything we are willing to work together for. Together we are empowered. ABATE has demonstrated the power of putting difference aside and working to achieve a common goal. ABATE will protect the rights and lifestyle of all motorcyclists. United we are strong and you can choose to join us or you can stand by and watch. ABATE of Maryland has been fighting the fight for forty years and, if need be, we will continue for another forty years. But we will never fight alone again. Be part of our victories and our defeats. We shall grow strong because of it. Keep watching. We have even greater things to come.

Taking the Scenic Route

POINT LOOKOUT STATE PARK by Mike “Heritage” Gerjets

There is something that attracts many of us to water. It doesn’t matter if it is a lake, a river, a waterfall, or the ocean, we tend to find water beautiful, calming, and relaxing. If I just described you, then you should hop on your bike and ride to Point Lookout State Park in Southern Maryland. Point Lookout is at the southernmost tip of Maryland’s western shore where the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay meet. As you ride Point Lookout Road to the end, you will find yourself completely surrounded by water where you can often observe sailboats navigating the waterways as well as local fishermen hoping for a big catch.

If you are a Civil War buff, you will appreciate Point Lookout’s rich place in history. It served as a prisoner of war camp for approximately 52,000 captured Confederate soldiers. Around 3,000 of those prisoners died due to extremely harsh winters and poor shelter conditions. Point Lookout also functioned as a Civil War hospital to treat injured Union soldiers. Be sure to visit the memorial commemorating the Confederate soldiers buried in a mass grave at the cemetery, and take a walk to the hospital and various other buildings preserved at the State Park. I also recommend taking the time to visit the Point Lookout Lighthouse that was built in the 1830s and an important beacon for ships navigating the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and ride to new destinations!
