It’s finally here! The riding season is upon us and the long road calls us all. There are many, many events scheduled across the Delmarva area, and more as you venture off the peninsula. If this is your kind of thing, I ask that you consider what the event is supporting. Some support our American heroes like the Vietnam Veterans program on April 22nd hosted by FEZ temple #231. This event honors the veterans of that war. (contact William Thomas at 302-423-3044 or Doncasses@earthlink. net for details). Ride to the Tide supports Special Olympics which is another worthy cause. There are other events that benefit organizations actively attacking the many freedoms we bikers enjoy here in the great State of Delaware. Remember that hospitals and law enforcement organizations supported a mandatory helmet law while at the same time opposed accent lighting on motorcycles. There is a reason that you can only have “white or amber” LED lights on your motorcycle. Red and blue were opposed by LEOs. My simple question to everyone is: Why would you support something that doesn’t support you? It’s no secret that a biker event can raise a lot of money. We are generous to a fault when it comes to kids and animals. I’ve purchased all kinds of stuff that I didn’t need because it was for a good cause. I’ve participated in every 50/50 for the same reason. What I will not do is participate in an event that in any way supports the people and organizations that oppose us. On that note, the mid-term elections are fast approaching. Many House members are up for election along with some other offices. DO YOUR RESEARCH! I really don’t care what party someone endorses; I care about their stand on specific issues. Anyone who would or has attempted to restrict or remove any of the rights and freedoms of motorcyclists will not get my vote. I will support those who have tried to expand those rights. Daytona Beach Bike Week, also called Daytona Bike Week, is a motorcycle event and rally held annually in Daytona Beach, Florida. Approximately 500,000 people make their way to the rally area for the 10-day event. The festivities include motorcycle racing, concerts, parties, and street festivals. The event is usually held on the first full week of March and contends with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as the most popular motorcycle rally in the United States. The Daytona Beach Bike Week rally started as the Daytona 200 race on January 24, 1937. This first race was a 3.2 miles beach and pavement course. It was won by Ed Kretz from California riding an Indian motorcycle with an average speed of 73.34 mph. This yearly race took a break from 1942 to 1947 due to World War II. During the years off, an unofficial event was still taking place commonly called Bike Week. In 1947 the official race resumed and gained in popularity. The event was then promoted by "Big Bill" France, co-founder of NASCAR, and the family business (now known as International Speedway Corporation) still promotes the 200 and the entire Bike Week races at Daytona International Speedway, including the Daytona Supercross which is known for its world-class pyrotechnics and light show. GOOD MOTORCYCLE MORNING! I’M ONLY AS GOOD AS MY GEAR. For Epic Ride, I need gear that can take a beating and withstand searing heat. It has to be able to deal with thunderstorms, possible floods, and 45 days of hurricane force winds. Let’s dig into what I’ve chosen to help get me there and back. Let’s see what gear I’ll be taking on Epic Ride 2018. THE RIDE “Shady”, she’s a 2009 Honda Shadow Aero. She’s my partner in crime, perfect for Epic Rides. She has Honda’s bullet proof reliability coupled with a 750cc engine that has enough get up and go for me and all my gear yet doesn’t drink that much gas. I’m not going for beauty or bragging rights; sheer practicality. She has a windshield with custom mounts that allow me to mount gear just above the headlight. She has three Stanley Fatmax 28” toolboxes custom mounted on the sides like saddlebags and one on top in place of the rear seat. They’re roomy, very durable, waterproof, and lockable, very important. THE HELMET My helmet is a white Icon Varia☺nt Helmet. It flows a ton of air and is a motovlogger staple. It has ample room in front for microphones, it’s sides are flat enough for mounting cameras, and it has a large visor on top that helps with shading the face-shield and cameras for less heat build-up. On the left side it has a Drift Ghost-S camera and a Sena 20S Bluetooth system mounted. The Drift Ghost-S is not the latest and greatest camera, but it is super dependable, waterproof, super durable, and lasts 3-4 hours on a single battery. The Sena 20S paired with a smartphone can replace your stereo system, your GPS, and let you answer phone calls hands free. Both are a must for me.

THE RIDER Well, me, but, more precisely, what I’ll be wearing. The jacket is a Joe Rocket Alter Ego 3.0. It’s at home in frigid temps and scorching heat. It has built-in armor and is mostly waterproof. I absolutely love it. The pants will be the standard issue Battle Dress Uniform(BDU) military pants. They’re super durable and they dry quickly. They also have double the material in the seat and over the knees along with tassels at the bottom that you can tie to your boots. The boots will be Shoes for Crews Summit Boots. Some people like waterproof, I go for ventilation. These boots are solid, they’ve joined me on an Epic Ride and were with me while climbing mountains in Peru. For gloves I’ll be sporting the Fox Dirtpaw gloves. They’re super comfortable, and offer just enough protection from sunburn, windburn, and road rash. For rain I have a set of Frog Toggs. They’re not specifically designed for motos, but they are super durable and they’re water tight when you need to stay dry, and super cozy when you need that little bit extra to stay warm. THE ACCOMMODATIONS It’s called Epic Ride, but that doesn’t mean expensive ride. The biggest cost by far is for a place to sleep. Hotels and Airbnb’s average $50-$80/night. 45 days of that is somewhere around $3,000. That’s why I’ll be camping whenever and wherever I can. For this I’ll have along a Swiss Army Alpine Peak 2-person tent and a Coleman inflatable airbed. The Alpine Peak sets up quick, and has plenty of room for myself and my gear. The inflatable airbed helps you to forget that you’re sleeping on the ground and helps you get a good night’s sleep. It also floats in the event of a flood (True Story ☺). That about wraps up the Gear preview for Epic Ride 2018. Of course, I’ll be taking more stuff, but this is truly the main gear I cannot live without. Irons Custom Motorcycle Works built Rookie to compete in the 2018 show season. They envisioned a super-clean, stripped-down bike that was still functional. All of the electronics were integrated into the fuel tank and they ran the engine oil through the Paughco rigid frame. The frame was modified to use the engine as a stressed member and it is finished off with all internal hand controls. Rookie is the definition of clean! SENIOR MOMENT RICH VREELAND Location: Bloomsburg, PA Age: 54 Rich Vreeland began riding at the age of 8 on a RUPP but his first real bike didn’t come along until he was 10 - a used 1971 Yamaha Mini Enduro 60. Rich has been the co-owner of Vreeland’s Harley-Davidson, Inc. in Bloomsburg, PA for the past 27 years. It’s safe to say he’s owned quite a few bikes in his lifetime. Everyone in the Vreeland family rides including his wife, Patti, who enjoys riding her 2006 Road King. Rich’s favorite place to ride is in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He accomplished his longest ride when he and his brother rode cross-country 9700 miles through 28 states in 33 days. Rich is also a professional drag racer who rides a Top Fuel Harley at over 210 mph. He is the 2016 AMRA Nitro Funny Bike National Champion. Rich is a life member of AMA, ABATE and HOG. As an ordained minister, he is the Chaplain for the American Motorcycle Racing Association and founder of The Sturgis Free Oil Change, a motorcycle ministry. When asked what advice he would impart to new or less experienced riders, Rich says, “Ride safe!” and cites his favorite quote, “I would rather be an alive nerd than a dead cool guy.”
