Here at FLBD we’re asking “Where has the summer gone??” It’s August already! FLBD has been very busy this summer organizing the 2012 Honor Ride and Weekend of Remembrance, August 10th thru 12th, in Winchester, VA. This great town is nestled in the Shenandoah Valley right off Rte. 81 and even though the weather has been extraordinarily hot and humid, we’ve noticed it was much more tolerable there. Also, the locals are very friendly, there are some great riding roads to explore and hotels are plentiful with room rates to fit every budget. The daytime event on adjacent properties donated for use by Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson and Valley Cycle Center includes four bands, motorcycle drill team and K-9 demos, vendors, food, beer garden, auction, contests and more. In the evening, Q-Entertainment and The Blue Fox will host a great Kick Off Party on Friday evening, August 10th, featuring the Miss Fast Lane Biker contest and the After Party on Saturday evening, August 11th, featuring the Fast Lane Biker Hot Cougar contest (women 35+). Winners will receive cash and prizes and the 1st place winners will receive a photo shoot by StarPhotos of VA to appear in a future issue of FLBD. Interested contestants should contact Miss Caroline at caroline@flbdelmarva.com or sign up in person at the Honor Ride event. On Sunday, August 12th, we ask everyone to meet at Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson beginning at 9 a.m. to register for the Honor Ride. Kickstands up is 11 a.m. for a police-escorted ride to the National Fallen Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. All vehicles are welcome. For those who cannot participate in the ride, the event with food and vendors will remain open until approximately 4 p.m. for your enjoyment. Visit www.honor-ride.org for complete ride, event and evening event schedules, sponsor listings and more. Be sure to book your hotel through the website. Not only will you get a great rate, a portion of the hotel fee will be donated to the NLEOMF. Remember, 100% of the net proceeds of this event benefit the NLEOMF. The next big event after the Honor Ride is Delmarva Bike Week® in Ocean City, MD. This FREE event is supported by the entire Fast Lane Biker Magazine family and we are proud to be named the Motorcycle Magazine Media Sponsor. As such, we will be present at all four OFFICIAL Delmarva Bike Week® locations. We will be distributing the September issue which will include the
special Delmarva Bike Week® event guide – maps, event schedule and anything you need to know to navigate the FREE weekend event. Please patronize the businesses who advertise in FLBD for this event. They KNOW what bikers are reading and care enough to reach out to you in the best way possible! Take note Ocean City, MD merchants – there is still time to get your ad into the September issue. Contact sales@flbdelmarva.com by August 15, 2012. Finally, many of you have asked where we will be nesting during the evening at Delmarva Bike Week® and, particularly, if we’ll be at Dead Freddies again this year. The bottom line is that, for many reasons, we will NOT be at Dead Freddies. In the end, we feel this is a blessing in disguise. By not being at Dead Freddies, we have time to reconnect with our readers during the day, catch up with old friends, visit local establishments who have advertised with us for the past 4 years and, most important, actually enjoy bike week instead of working from sun up until 3 a.m. every day. In the evening, we’ll check out some of the local hot spots like Seacrets, 28th Street Pit & Pub and, of course, we’ll be cruising around checking out some of the hidden treasures in the Ocean City area. We were asked to locate a venue for Saturday evening to do a fundraising Meet & Greet for BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) so if you own, or know of, a venue in OC MD who might want to host this event, please contact Walt@flbdelmarva.com and we’ll put something together! All-in-all, we look forward to relaxing in Ocean City, MD, riding around town on the Beast and taking in all that the official Delmarva Bike Week® event has to offer. By the way, did I mention that Delmarva Bike Week® is a FREE EVENT and has been a FREE event for 14 years? For more information, visit www. delmarvabikeweek.com. Last but not least, PLEASE consider supporting those who support the motorcycle community 52 weeks a year not just 4 days during bike week. Amen to that! Until next month, keep the rubber on the road and the shiny side up!

SENIOR MOMENTS Name: Robert (‘Bob’) Carlo Age: 75 Location: Frederick, MD
Bob Carlo began riding in 1973. His first bikes were a 1973 Honda 750 and a 1974 Honda 750. From there, his bike of choice was a 1978 Honda Gold Wing and finally a 2003 Harley Electra Glide Full Dresser Firefighters Special which he cherishes and still owns today. It is this bike that has become a tribute to Bob’s son, Michael Scott Carlo, an NYC Firefighter (Engine 230), who was killed on 9/11 at Ground Zero, South Tower. When Bob first began riding, young Michael would ride backseat with Bob while his older brother, Rob, rode with his friend. Then Santa left a 50 cc Suzuki under the family tree for the brothers. Bob took them to an empty lot and, once the boys learned how to shift, he sat in his lounge chair and watched them develop the same love for riding that he had. Bob is an honorary member of the Fire Riders Motorcycle Club of NYC – his son, Rob, is a member. Bob has joined rides to deliver pieces of steel from the World Trade Center to various locations including Shanksville, PA and Arlington, Va. The steel is incorporated into memorials. He proudly supports the FEMA annual tribute to fallen firefighters in Frederick, MD and displays his bike in front of the host hotel, answering questions and promoting awareness. Bob and his wife Joni have been married for 25 years. In addition to Rob and Michael, he has a daughter, Nicole. Bob is also a member of the Frederick HOG Chapter and enjoys riding his bike around Florida during the winter months. If you’d like a closer look at Bob’s tribute bike, he will be at the Honor Ride on August 12th in Winchester, VA (Honor Ride details can be found in this issue).

John E. Shanks
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND LAW ENFORCEMENT RELATIONS, NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL FUND around the world and like to go on motorcycle tours in the UK. We are headed to Ireland next year for our second tour with the Blue Knights, Ireland 1.
John Shanks is a career law enforcement professional with over 22 years of active law enforcement service and more than 30 years within the law enforcement profession. John holds a Master Peace Officers License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education and spent 10 years teaching at San Antonio College Law Enforcement Training Center. John is married to Sandra Taylor and has two sons.
8. Where would you most like to reside if you could? Easy question – warm, sunny climate, warm gin, clear water, sand, palm trees and a tiki bar where I can dive in the morning, ride in the afternoon and drink margaritas every evening.
1. How long have you been involved with your business/ occupation? I am retired from the United States Air Force and I am a former Police Officer from the San Antonio, Texas area. I spent a total of 22 years as a sworn, full-time peace officer. I have been with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (“NLEOMF”) for over 13 years, 5 years of which have been full time and prior to that I was a volunteer. I have 10 colleagues on the National Memorial, so working here has special meaning to me.
9. Who is your fictional hero? Dirty Harry. He did what no cop could ever get away with. Gotta love Dirty Harry.
2. What exactly do you do in that capacity? I am responsible for raising funds in support of the “A Matter of Honor” campaign to build the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum. I work with law enforcement agencies, associations and unions throughout the US and its territories. I also work with corporations and individuals of high wealth to gain their support for the law enforcement community, the Memorial and Museum.
10. What is the most awesome thing you own? I really don’t own anything awesome. I love my Ford F-150 and my Gold Wing, but I value my family and my friends. I have been blessed with a great wife, great sons and an incredible close group of friends that are all over the country and right here in VA. In short, life is good, awesome even.
3. Where were you born? I am the son of a son of a … sailor. Born and raised on the sunny beaches of San Diego, California. High School gym class - surfing!
11. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? When will the Museum be finished? The Museum is currently scheduled to open in 2014. We have been working for over 10 years and we are in the final stages and fundraising. We have raised over $56 million for the Museum. Please visit www.lawenforcementmuseum.org to learn more.
4. Where do you currently reside and for how long? I live in Alexandria, Virginia and have been on the east coast since 1999. My office is in downtown Washington, D.C. 5. What do you like/admire most about yourself? Tough question. I have always taken great pride in having a high degree of personal integrity and self esteem. Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do, not because someone is watching or could have a video camera. My motto: Let Integrity Be Your Guide.
12. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? I am happy where I am, I loved my military and law enforcement career and I love working at the NLEOMF. My next occupation will be retired, riding motorcycles and scuba diving with friends.
6. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? As I get older - lose weight and live a healthier life style.
13. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Any two year old! LOL, to have a day without a care in world would be awesome!
7. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? Scuba diving and motorcycles - my two passions away from work. Both my wife Sandy and I dive and ride. We have been on dive trips

THE BLUE PARROT • WILMINGTON, DE By Jay Kuch, Mystery Food Critique
The weather is hot and steamy and I hope you are taking advantage of your bike to keep cool and explore the local area. I have partaken in a few good rides and this month decided to try out a suggested restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware, The Blue Parrot. I arrived on what I thought would be a typical night by restaurant industry standards but I could not have been more wrong. Not only did I sample some great Cajun cuisine, but I was lucky enough to be present for the drag show – and it had nothing to do with racing! I knew from the moment I was seated it was going to be an interesting night. I joined my party at a high top table near the bar where we browsed the menus and a list of “specials.” I indulged in a freshly-made, ruby red grapefruit mojito (not my usual Crown & Coke). There were a variety of menu options to choose from including wings, burgers, jambalaya and crawfish. We decided to start off with the seafood quesadilla and some Mississippi crab fries. The quesadilla came stuffed with shrimp, crawfish, tomato, onion, cheese and a huge side of sour cream and fresh salsa. It was so over packed you needed a fork and knife because there was no other way to eat it. The crab fries were crispy and topped with Andouille sausage, crab meat, brown gravy and cheese. It was a great blend of flavors and is a “must taste.” I could eat them all night if allowed. For dinner, we sampled the tuna taco special, Delta chicken, red beans and rice and blackened tuna sandwich. The tuna taco was a large soft tortilla shell stuffed with chunks of tuna, lettuce (which we all know I picked out), tomato, onion and an amazing sauce. Red beans and rice are pretty self –explanatory and was served with toasted slices of bread. It was a perfect light dish and full of Cajun flavor. Finally, the Delta chicken was a good-sized chicken breast topped with crab imperial, Swiss cheese and hollandaise sauce, served with a side of creamy jack mashed potatoes. The chicken was tender, the crab was fresh and the mashed potatoes were awesome. It was an all-around great meal. I could only finish about half after all the other samples I had, but it was just as good for the
FA S T L A N E B I K E R
following day’s lunch. Just as we finished dinner, the drag show started. What is a drag show you ask? I had the same question. This particular show was three “queens” dressed to the nines and lip syncing to various hit songs that I’m sure most everyone would find familiar. I have to admit it was very entertaining and definitely something to experience. Just be sure to bring an abundance of one dollar bills. Don’t worry, the “queens” weren’t stripping. They were simply singing and dancing throughout the restaurant for tips. There were several sets and lots of costume changes. This is definitely something different and only for those of you secure in your manhood! The Blue Parrot provided a great meal, an interesting show and a fun Mardi Gras atmosphere. The entire venue sported beads, masks, and artwork. Entertainment at The Blue Parrot is not limited to drag queens. In fact, be sure to check out their website for their live band line up. The Blue Parrot is located at 1934 West 6th Street, Wilmington, Delaware. So if you are looking for a good time and some great Cajun food, swing into The Blue Parrot. Until next time, remember: It’s just another day in paradise. Questions, comments or restaurant recommendations can be sent to Jay@flbdelmarva.com.

The event exceeded funds raised in 2012 and will help more children as part of the “Kids For Christmas” charity, the event’s beneficiary. Kids For Christmas helps needy children in Berkeley County that would not otherwise have a Christmas. In 2011, the charity supported 108 children and their families. In 2012 they hope to help at least 150 families. Rumble in the Valley’s goal is to continue to grow in order to assist other charities. This years’ participation was estimated at 3000 people over the 3 days. Plans for 2013 are already being made so mark your calendar to join the festivities June 14th thru 16th for the 3rd Annual WV Rumble in the Valley.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com . www.cycleattorney.com With virtually every new claim my office takes in, at some point there is a discussion about if and when we are forced to file a lawsuit, which county would be the best for a motorcycle accident case to be filed? Most clients, after hearing my typical speech about which counties will return the highest verdict for someone injured in a motorcycle accident, understand that in Pennsylvania, the best counties to file a lawsuit are generally Philadelphia and Alleghany counties and in New Jersey, generally, most of the northern counties, given their proximity to New York, usually return the highest verdicts. However, the law generally restricts where we are allowed to file suit. After giving this speech to current and former clients for well over twenty years, many still have difficulty understanding it, because as they ride their motorcycles, they see many other bikes on the road and it leads them to believe that if they do end up facing a jury trial, the pool of potential jurors will be filled with other motorcycle riders. However that is rarely the case. In many of the jury trials I have been involved with over the years, you would be surprised that a majority of the people sitting on the panel have never been on a motorcycle, nor do they have any desire to ride one, and therefore we generally end up with a jury panel of between 8-12 people, most of which don’t have much sympathy for an injured biker. A perfect example can be observed in local counties such as Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks. If you go for a ride, you will see motorcycles on almost every street which may lead you to believe that if a jury trial becomes necessary, those are the “peers” you are going to see waiting to be selected to sit on your jury. However, the reality is that most of the individuals that get selected to serve on the
jury have never operated a motorcycle and carry with them the negative feelings about those who enjoy riding, believing that there is an inherit risk that comes with operating a motorcycle. Although Pennsylvania is fifth in the number of registered motorcycles with almost 900,000 bikes licensed and registered, when you compare that number to the number of residents that are over 18 and are eligible to sit on a jury panel, you quickly come to realize that most of the potential jurors do not ride a motorcycle. If you factor that in along with the state of our overall economy, your going to find that most juries are not looking to award large amounts of money to an individual who is complaining about neck or back pain unless there are substantial residual injuries from surgery or loss the loss of the ability to work. The bottom line is, “The Best” cases settle out of Court and unfortunately cases where there is a question as to liability and/ or the severity of the injuries are the ones that end up in front of a jury. Fortunately, given the types of motorcycle accident claims that we handle, we have been extremely successful in settling a large majority of our clients’ cases well before trial ever becomes necessary. As a firm that primarily focuses on motorcycle accident and injures, we are able to ensure that your case gets the attention it deserves! As always, if upon reading this material you have any questions regarding this topic or any others, please feel free to contact me at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLELAW (1-888-292-5352).

WIVES BEHIND THE BADGE by Michele Hancock
Support. That’s the best word that describes Wives Behind The Badge (“WBTB”). Those who join this organization will find all the support they need and more. When you are the spouse of a law enforcement officer (“LEO”), you need all the support you can get!
iary in every state. To learn more about the auxiliary program in your state visit www.wivesbehindthebadge.org. In addition to support programs, WBTB offers two annual scholarships for spouses and dependent children of law enforcement officers. Joining WBTB was one of the best decisions I made. I spent time working the WBTB booth during Police Week in Washington, DC, and had the opportunity to speak with other members about my experiences as a LEO spouse, and as a new WBTB member. The Police Week event proves just how close knit the law enforcement community can be and the WBTB is no different. We are there for our husbands, 24/7, keeping them strong while they are on the streets putting their lives on the line. We keep strong for our families. They are the law enforcement officers you see each day – and we are the Wives Behind The Badge you don’t see.
I have been a LEO spouse for almost 14 years. I am lucky; my husband works “regular” hours. He is presently assigned to one of the local high schools and his hours compliment the school schedule. Trust me, I have paid my dues with many nights alone, coping with long shifts. It’s in those days, especially in the beginning, that support is needed the most. The new LEO spouse will have so many questions and unique situations to deal with that communicating with someone in similar circumstances helps in many ways. I had heard about WBTB but it wasn’t until several months ago that I joined. Being in a community of women who understand how I feel has been a wonderful experience. WBTB not only supports wives, it is a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to law enforcement officers and their families. In 2006, Rose Winick, the wife of a Southern California police sergeant, found herself without a source of support when her online LEO group shut down. She initiated an online forum that quickly grew into a community of its own. After helping a member search for equipment for her husband, the idea came about to find other ways to help the LEO community. The all-volunteer staff is led by Tabitha Youngstrom of Southern California. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping police families with resources and support including Families Behind The Badge, a section of the forums dedicated to supporting the families of law enforcement officers and Blue Line Kids, a safe and secure place for children of law enforcement officers to reach out to each other. In the past year, WBTB has expanded to include 32 auxiliary committees with the goal of providing the support and resources of the national organization on a local level. The goal is to have an auxil23

GETTYSBURG BIKE WEEK 2012 Contrubuted by: Amy & the Entire Fast Lane Biker PA Crew
Gettysburg 2012 Bike Week kicked off Thursday July 12th and every one was pretty geared up for a great weekend. We can thank the organizers of the event for doing such a great job pulling it all together for a fun, safe, and exciting time. Mustang Sally took the stage Thursday night and had the crowd eating out of their hands. With a great stage presence and musical talent this band is a MUST see! Beginning with the very first song they had the crowd out of their seats and dancing. Creating an excitement and anticipation for the rest of the weekend. I can tell you all of us at FLBPA were glad we were there to be a part of it. Friday we got an early start wanting to enjoy every minute. Checking out the bikes and meeting crazy fun loving people is one of my favorite past times. So you can always bet you will see me with a camera in my hand ready to take pictures and listen to your story. On the line up for Friday was a tattoo contest with a male and female category. There is nothing like the sound of a motorcycle, smell of leather, and the sight of tattoos to get my motor running. There were plenty of people willing to show off their ink on Friday’s contest. I love the stories behind the artwork almost as much as I love the tattoos. If you are fortunate enough to be among the tattooed population you know what I mean. Whether it is a memorial to your military service, a loved one that has passed, or an expression of your personality, each piece has a story to tell. Winner of the men’s category was Jonathan Velicky from Forty Fort, PA. His sleeve was a collection of beautiful artwork with a great story line. He credits Shaun Flinn from 570 Tattooing Co. in Wilkes-Barre, PA as the artist behind the work. Up next were the lovely ladies willing to bare their tattoos for all to see. While there were so many great pieces to choose from, it came down to two. Erica Whitebread from Forty Fort, PA with a great tattoo down her left side representing her family and love. However, Melissa Brightville from Lebanon, PA won out for the detail and skilled workmanship on her back. Melissa says her trusted tattoo artist is Bryan Campbell of Bryan Campbell Studios in New Cumberland, PA. All and all it was a great time and a lot of great ink! Hollywood Nights a Bob Segar Tribute Band took the stage at 8pm on Friday. I cannot say enough about this band it

was great to hear so many songs I haven’t heard in a long time. The weather was great and the crowd was pleasing. Hollywood Nights took us back to another time with each song belted out. If you have a chance to catch these guys I would highly recommend it! The place was definitely alive on Saturday everyone was ready to kick up their heels. Character after character parading by us stopping to say Hi and posing for a picture or two!
Of course, nothing gets the crowd hyped up like a Bikini Contest. Gettysburg Bike Week 2012 hosted the 1st annual Bikini Contest at 6:30 pm on Saturday. These Bikini Beauties were more than happy to get a rise out of the audience. It looked like a hard decision however, Christy from Hanover, PA was the 1st place winner! I will say that the crowd loved all the contestants. After the girls got the crowd all worked up it was time for KIX to take control. And take control they did! You can always count on Steve and the Guys to give you a great show full of great music and great stories. I know they “Blow My Fuse” leaving me to take a “Cold Shower” sorry I couldn’t resist. By this time the campground was in full swing and the energy was very contagious. I believe they had about 12,000 people hanging on every note. I am still hearing the songs in my head and replaying the image of the crowd. I can’t wait to see them again!
When it comes to Bike Events my favorite part has to be the people. They come from all walks of life to celebrate their love for riding. For those of us bitten by the motorcycle bug, you know that it is not just a hobby it is a lifestyle. From what we ride and the way we dress to what we stand for, this is who we are. Gettysburg Bike Week was a huge success and I am glad FLBPA was there to see so many people come together as one big biker family for a weekend. The staff, security, and vendors all get a well deserved thanks for making this weekend a very enjoyable experience. I hope to see you there next year and remember always ride hard, ride safe, and kick it like a Rock Star! 33

HAGERSTOWN BIKE WEEK by Alicia ‘BBA’ Helfrich
Hagerstown Bike Week markets itself as “The Best of the West” which refers to the western portion of Maryland. The second annual event welcomed bikers into the area from July 5th-8th and I was happy to be one of them. I’m a pin and patch collector myself, so I was sure to purchase my souvenirs the moment I arrived from one of the many vendors selling their goods inside and outside of Hager Hall, one of the official Bike Week Welcome Centers. Additional official locations were Barefoot Bernie’s and Cancun Cantina West where an abundance of food, drinks and live entertainment could be found. In fact, this event rocked it out for four days. Friday night the streets of downtown Hagerstown were closed for bike night. Saturday, AMA Racing, tattoo, Daisy Duke, and bikini contests were all part of the entertainment. Let’s hope this bike week continues for years to come. It truly is an enjoyable time. See You in the Fast Lane!

After several interesting weeks of weather here in beautiful Southwest Virginia, including sudden wind storms and temperatures over 100 degrees, it was time for some fun, great music, food, libations and friends. Bikers were in a riding mood and the destination of choice was the 460 Road House Bike Night. First up on stage was Danger Hill with awesome classic rock music. They kept the place moving all night long. Between sets, DJ Rinzy and DJ Harry kept the momentum going. July cover girl Blue Angel and July hot cougar Wanda were on hand passing out magazines, signing autographs, and posing for photos with their many admirers. Several birthdays were being celebrated and we noticed a few new faces as well. We want to take this time to wish a very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Sandy, one of the owners of 460 Road House. We hope to celebrate many more with you. The 460 Road House is open 7 days a week, 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Stop by for daily specials and great DJ/Karaoke provided by R & D Entertainment from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. For more information or to book your special event, call Sandy or Aaron at (540) 343-0090. We hope to see everyone again at our next bike night, August 25th. Live music will be provided by Jessie & The Black Water Bandits. Enjoy great food, libations and, of course, hot bikes and babes. Until the next time, ride safe and keep the rubber side down.
