SENIOR MOMENTS Name: James D. (Dan) Spaid Age: 72 Location: Smithsburg, MD

Dan Spaid didn’t begin riding until he was 55 years old but he sure is making up for lost time. His first bike was a 550 Suzuki which he traded in for a Harley 883 Custom. His next purchase was a 2001 Fat Boy, followed by a 2005 Electra Glide Classic, a 2007 Road Glide, a 2011 Street Bob and, finally, a 2012 Heritage Softail. Dan is an active member of Chambers Hog since 1999. He held several positions in the club including Treasurer and Historian. For the past 5+ years, Dan has served as a Road Captain. He also enjoys participating in charity rides such as MDA and God Bless America. He has been to rallies in Sturgis, SD (twice), Laconia, NH, Myrtle Beach, SC, the Harley 105th Anniversary Rally in Milwaukee, WI and he has been to OC Bikefest/Delmarva Bike Week for the last 13 years. Favorite rides in addition to Sturgis, SD include areas closer to home such as riding the mountains of western Maryland and Pennsylvania, riding to his condo in Ocean City, MD and to his dealership, M&S Harley-Davidson in Chambersburg, PA where he volunteers to help at their functions when he can. Dan is planning another trip to Sturgis next year and looks forward to another trip out west. All it takes is a phone call and Dan is usually ready to roll in minutes. His goal when he first began riding was to register 100,000 miles. Since his 2001 Fat Boy, Dan has been keeping track and his goal is now in sight as he currently registers approximately 95,000 miles. “Now that my goal is in sight I’ll set higher standards,” said Dan. “And, of course, my main goal is to always ride safe.” Dan is a retired tool salesman who currently drives a school bus for activities and field trips. He served in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963 and spent most of his enlistment in Hawaii. He was a field radio operator and also spent a couple of years operating a Ham Radio Station for the Marines. He met his wife, Barb, on Waikiki Beach in 1963 and they were married later that year. This October 19th, they will celebrate their 50th anniversary. Dan and Barb have 3 adult children, 4 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren. When asked what words of wisdom he would pass down to younger riders, Dan says, “Always ride safe, wear an approved helmet and wear proper riding gear to make yourself visible. Also, make sure your bike is always in riding order. Check your tires and replace them when needed.” Words of wisdom for sure! gettysburg BIKE WEEK JULY 11TH-14TH, 2013 • BY: ALICIA ‘BBA’ HELFRICH July was a big month for the quiet town of Gettysburg, PA. From commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg and the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, to its 12th year of welcoming motorcycle enthusiasts, arriving on their iron horses, to Gettysburg Bike Week. Three “official” locations made it easy for riders to participate in GBW and the surrounding area. Granite Hill Camping Resort, All Star Sports Complex, and The American Civil War Wax Museum. Clouds and drizzle appeared for a brief period on Friday but the remaining three days shared sunshine and hot temperatures. Vendor villages opened daily Thursday thru Sunday at 10 a.m. A bike week rally means music, and man did they have a great variety for everyone. Live on stage at the All Star was the Trailer Park Cowboys. Granite Hill was host to The Great White Band, Slaughter, War, and Big Jack. The Eisenhower Hotel rocked Saturday night with Great Train Robbery. This band has been pumping the tunes out since 1977. I still remember the first time I saw them perform - I was 13 years old on vacation in Bethany Beach in 1977 and they were just starting out. You do the math! Friday’s tattoo competition was tough. There were many tats that depicted “family” meanings. In the end, Chelsea DeGroft of Gettysburg was the female winner of a design she drew for her firefighter father as well as for herself. Her tattoo took 6 hours to complete. Ken Gerlock of King William, VA won the best male division. His chest and stomach displayed a brilliant “New School” tattoo of an octopus, fish, and more. He spent 38 hours getting inked. Each winner received $100. This year, GBW kicked off a 1st Annual Biker Build Off. Thursday was the build off’s first day and by Saturday a winner was chosen. The public voted on their favorite entry by depositing a ticket in one of two boxes. So who was competing for first place? Builders and owners of Vicious Cycles in Lemoyne, PA Greg Carter and Scott Fisher competed against Tom Keefer, owner of Franklin Church Choppers of Dillsburg, PA. At 6 p.m. Saturday, the winner was announced and the trophies were awarded. Congratulations to Tom of FCC who walked away with first place. Way to go Tom! On Saturday, the All Star Sports Complex hosted a ride-in bike show and $500 was awarded to Best of Show, and First Place plaques were awarded for each class. The Florida Drill Team and Daredevil Bubba Blackwell rounded out the entertainment. Harley Davidson demo riders were also rolling in and out of the complex. At Granite Hill, the schedule of events kept going full throttle and included the 9th Annual Burnout Pit Championship, Second Annual Bikini Contest, and bike games that drew a large crowd of onlookers. After 8 weeks of competitions held at various area restaurants and bars, the final Cornhole Tournament was also held at Granite Hill. Jimmy O’Farrell, “cornhole coordinator” (sorry Jimmy, LOL) explained, “The finalists were grouped

by bars. Once a team won at the designated restaurant they were done and just had to show up at GBW for the finals.” The Parade of Chrome rolled out from the All Star and continued through the streets of Gettyburg before arriving at Granite Hill late Saturday afternoon. Later, the evening exploded with a traditional fireworks display. The GBW staff and volunteers worked extremely hard to provide a fun, safe motorcycle rally for all to enjoy. I personally would like to thank Kelly Crist, John Shue, John Summers, and Nora and Bob Farrell for their kindness and support along with the rest of the crew. I left GBW with memories of a great time, new friends and vendors to stay in touch with - and my rally souvenirs and a 150th Commemorative wine bottle. Gettysburg Bike Week has so much to offer. Anytime there is a charity event for kids, babies, cancer, downed riders, veterans or anything else, they turn out in droves to ride. It is such a wonderful thing. Why then, won’t riders take the time to support themselves? Every year, ABATE of Maryland has a helmet protest ride. Very few people show up. This year we had a Freedom Ride and only 10 or so people participated. This is very frustrating for those of us in the motorcycle rights business who do everything we possibility can to ensure that motorcyclists remain able to ride free. We have passed many bills over the years. Motorcycle lighting/night time awareness bill, handicap tags for motorcycles, small motorcycle plates, right of way bill, etc. We founded the Motorcycle Safety Program. ABATE sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists. We have a representative for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. We sit on the ATV Safety Task Force. We remain vigilant watching for any legislature which would negatively or positively impact motorcyclists. We have defeated attempts to impose catastrophic health insurance that would make motorcycling unaffordable for many riders. We enacted a parking law that allows two motorcycles to park in one metered spot instead of only one. We maintain relationships with other motorcyclist’s rights organizations, including MRF, AMA and NCOM. This legislative session we are contemplating introducing a bill which would make it illegal to have motorcycle only checkpoints. There is nothing wrong with doing charity

events. But just remember, charity starts at home. Without a strong membership, we cannot continue to fight for you. We need members to carry on the fight. Believe me - it is a fight. If it were not for ABATE, you probably wouldn’t be riding that motorcycle. You would be wrapped in bubble wrap with a strobe light on top of your helmet and catastrophic insurance so high you couldn’t afford it. $25 a year for an ABATE membership and $30 a year for MRF gives you the peace of mind that we are fighting for you. What is your freedom worth? The next time you see an ABATE event, come on out and support us. Become a member and do your part. Help us take care of US. the greene turtle • ocean city, md If you were able to get any riding time in this month, count yourself as lucky. With all the rain we’ve had, finding time to ride has been difficult to say the least. But my bike needed to be washed anyway and I’ll take a free shower anytime. I was going to report to you from some of the great places I found during Hub City Bike Week, Hagerstown, MD, but after a series of unfortunate events I couldn’t make the trip and, even more disappointing, I didn’t get to hang out with all of you. I did, however, get out on the road a few times and, during one of those rides, found myself at The Greene Turtle in Ocean City, MD. The moment I walked through the doors, friendly staff greeted me and showed me to my table so I could settle in. I started with an angry orchard draft and an order of buffalo chicken nachos. The

nachos arrived on a plate full of chips and drenched in melted cheese, chunks of chicken tossed in hot sauce, lettuce, tomato, crumbled blue cheese and sour cream. The chips were fresh, the chicken was moist, the vegetables were fresh and the portion was huge. You could honestly order this as your dinner and be completely satisfied. But as usual, I tackled the nachos with the help of some friends which made it possible for me to move on to an entree. I decided to stick with the chicken theme and ordered the Fleet Street Chicken - grilled chicken breast on top of a healthy portion of mashed potatoes and topped with diced tomato, crab meat and a balsamic glaze. I also opted for a side of green beans but who really needs to know that. The chicken was, once again, juicy and the crab meat, tomato and balsamic glaze made for a great flavor. The mashed potatoes were creamy and even the green beans were good. After destroying the nachos, I barely had room for dinner so I opted to box the leftovers and ordered another beer before heading out. The Greene Turtle was a great experience with both friendly, efficient staff and good food. So if you need to stop for good food, drink and a friendly atmosphere during your travels, check them out. I had to travel a few hours from home to find a Greene Turtle but feel free to check their website for a restaurant near you – or make it a point to visit The Greene Turtle during OC BikeFest/Delmarva Bike Week in September. I plan to stop again so perhaps I’ll see you there! Until next time, remember - it’s just another day in paradise.

I live in Dover, DE (where I was born) and have been since 1987. Before that I lived in Barclay, MD. 4) What do you like/admire most about yourself? My willingness to help out anywhere I can, my confidence to take on any task, my big heart and my ability to forgive people no matter what. 5) What would you consider your greatest extravagance? I’m very down to earth and a hard worker. I was farm raised so there is no such thing as extravagance! 6) Who is your fictional hero? Any Clint Eastwood character. 7) Who do you consider your real life hero? My Aunt Cindy who did so much for my grandparents while taking care of her own family. Her dedication is endless! 8) What is the most awesome thing you own? It’s a toss between my 2002 Signature Series Dale Earnhardt Sr. Monte Carlo #1476 of 3333 and my 98 Dyna Lowrider. 9) What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Question: How do you keep up with everything you do? Answer: A calendar, long hours, and dedication! 10) If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Hub City Bike Week opened and the rain, dominating the weather for weeks before, stopped. The sky cleared and only the occasional angry cloud remained. Temperatures and humidity soared but no one seemed to care. If you build it, they will come. And they did. Hub City Bike Week was successful. Always Ron’s played host to more than a dozen bands including SilverTung, Crush Theory and Moon Dog Medicine Show. Bikers found a little relief from the scorching heat under the misting tent or the Budweiser sponsored party tent. There was food (including a daily all-you-caneat breakfast and Bloody Mary bar), a bike show, vendors, bull riding, contests, corn hole, organized rides and more. The street leading to Always Ron’s was shut down to accommodate bike only parking and hundreds of bikers took advantage of it. Also successful was the police-escorted Parade of Lighted Bikes that began at Twigg Cycles, roared through downtown Hagerstown and ended at Always Ron’s. Along the route, riders and non-riders alike were treated to a colorful display and waved hello to the Fast Lane Biker Crabby Biker as he took the position of last bike. Special thanks to Lt. Kifer and all the members of the Hagerstown Police who went above and beyond to make this event safe and keep the town running smooth! In addition to Always Ron’s, many local venues opened their doors to welcome bikers. The center of town held a bike night and bike show with hundreds turning out to participate. There was something for everyone within a short riding distance. As the weekend drew to an end, the sky grew ominous, the wind kicked up, the rain poured down and you could almost hear a higher power saying “now that it’s over, all you damn bikers get the Hell out of Hagerstown.” And they did. But we’ll be back next year to do it all again - only bigger and better!

ROLLING wITHTHE BIG DOG'S George Washington Parkway & Washington DC by Carlos ‘Big Dog’ Campos

As a tour guide who lives in the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington, DC metro area, I often get asked what route I might recommend in order for riders to get the most bangs for the buck. They typically want to see lots of memorials, monuments, vistas, that include as much nature as possible so they don’t have to see all the urbanization. They want an enjoyable ride that still lets them know where they are. They want to ride to the extent possible without traffic, lights or stop signs. Well, I always tell them that one of this Nation’s best kept secrets is the George Washington Parkway! It’s the CIA’s driveway for Pete’s sake! This patriotic and scenic run takes you on varying road types and levels of traffic congestion. Even so, for the most part, it is a very moving ride for most motorcyclists. It starts on the North side of I-495. It is the first exit on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. You’ll then run the South edge of Washington, D.C., along the edge of the Potomac River to Mount Vernon. So what will you see on this run? Located on the North end near Turkey Point you will find the Central Intelligence Agency. Don’t even try to go through the gates. It is a highly restricted area as you can imagine. Sharing the same exit and at the front door is their neighbor the FHA (Federal Highway Administration). I find that interesting for some reason. Is it just me? South of this you’ll find a series of 15-20 little State Parks. You’ll catch glimpses of George Washington University Mt. Vernon Campus and Georgetown University. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Preforming Arts and the infamous Watergate Hotel are all across the river from your run. There is an alternate route that takes you by those areas, but that’s a different article.

Run Distance: 50 miles (down and back), if you stick to the BDMT route. Approximate Time: 1 hr. 15 min, during a good weekend. During the week, peak rush hour traffic could take longer. At the very bottom of this run in Old Town Alexandria and traffic can be thick with traffic lights and commerce. Type of roads: 2 lane, 35-55 mph roads with some swooping curves, vista points, hills, valleys and historic landmarks along the Potomac River. Be cognizant of others as there are some urban life areas. Primary roads: George Washington Parkway, North & South Washington St. Alternate scenic routes: For a North side view try the Clara Barton Parkway., MacArthur Boulevard & Canal Road N.W., M Street N.W., & the Rock Creek & Potomac Parkway. Key note: Our Nations’ Capital has much to offer the tourists’ eye. One could ride around the capitols streets and find endless moments in time. It is nice to know that even here, in this urban sprawl, there are roads that allow you to instantly connect to them while disconnecting with the hustle and bustle of city life.

Now it gets really interesting. I challenge you to pay your respects at each of these Monuments. It never ceases to amaze me how many locals have never even been inside of the D.C. Beltway! This challenge should be on everybody’s bucket list within an hour of this route. The U.S. Marine Corps “Iwo Jima” War Memorial, the National Seabee Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, (Home of the Eternal Flame), the Pentagon, and yes, even the Navy – Merchant Marine Memorial. All of these are visible and accessible from this route. One of my favorite parts of this ride is riding by airplanes that are taking off and landing. I refer to it as doing a “fly by” of the Reagan National Airport. This is your last throttle up until you get out of the Beltway. The next area of caution is Old Town Alexandria. Here there is urban life happening for the next 3-4 miles. That means stop lights, 4 way stop signs, parking lots, stores and restaurants. People are busy rushing about their daily lives. Fortunately though, this means there is good food and other amenities like fuel available. As soon as you get passed this you’ll find yourselves back in your happy place, the open road.

The only thunder heard throughout the Allegheny Mountains the 4th weekend in June was the thunderous sound of motorcycles. Since 1998, Johnstown residents and businesses have welcomed thousands of riders to their historic town and the surrounding areas “flooding” attendees with a very diverse selection of things to do and entertainment. For the past several years, I’ve made it a point to see another part of this region while attending this rally in the valley. Whether it’s a road I haven’t traveled or a bar and grille I haven’t walked through, I always have a great time exploring. Of course, there are a few favorite spots I return to each year. Thunder in the Valley offered the usual biker rally excitement from live concerts in Central Park to the “Flirtin’ with Disaster” music of Molly Hatchet who performed on stage at the train station location. You could find something to do from morning until late into the night. A town favorite is always the “Grand Thunder Parade” which invites all makes and models to cruise down Main Street on Saturday of the rally. In each of these cases the speed of my clients has become a factor as there have either been witnesses or some physical evidence leading to the allegations of excessive speed being made against my clients. In most of these cases the accidents have taken place on smaller streets where the posted speed limit tends to be lower than on rural roads or the highways. Although many of these areas are sparsely populated, the speed limits remains low, however, the temptation to drive over the speed limit is high. In each case the other vehicle had either a stop sign or was pulling out from a driveway and clearly has the majority of fault. However, if there is evidence of speeding on the operator of the motorcycle, it gives the defendants an argument that there was some contributory negligence on the motorcyclist. This argument does not carry as much weight when my client is operating a “touring” style motorcycle however when operating sport bikes, whether the allegation of speed is true or not, it is much easier for the opposing counsel to argue that speed is a factor, given that most of these bikes look fast even when they are standing still. The point that I am trying to make is although the vehicle exiting a driveway or pulling away from a stop sign has the duty to make sure it is clear and safe to proceed, if excessive speed is evidenced by either witness testimony or unusually long skid marks it gives the other side an argument against accepting full responsibility for the claim. On a separate note, please remember that after an accident occurs, you should not give a recorded statement to any insurance company. I am still seeing client’s come to me after they have given recorded statements over the telephone. Many of them believe that because it’s their own insurance company they are required to give a statement. This is absolutely not the case. Not only are you not required to give a statement with regard to how the accident occurred, you are in no way bound to give a recorded statement. This also goes for any and all requests made to give a statement by the other individual’s insurance company. These recorded statements rarely do anything but help the insurance companies look for ways to deny claims. If you feel compelled to report the accident to your own insurance company you should keep the facts to a minimum and insist that it not be recorded. Any request by the other

parties insurance company should be limited to the location of your motorcycle until after you have spoken to an attorney. I know I have written on this subject before however, I am continually surprised by how often client’s are giving recorded statements to the insurance companies which then come back to haunt them at a later time. Finally, be careful out there. I believe I have seen an increase in serious motorcycle accidents this season. Most of which are being caused by drivers simply pulling out from stop signs or making left turns right in front of my clients. Never assume that they see you coming. Always slow down at these intersections and keep your eyes on the car itself and be prepared to take evasive action at a moments notice.
