February is here and, for some of us, it’s the unofficial start of the riding season. “Ride,” you might ask? With all the snow we’ve seen in such a short period of time that might be hard to believe but, yes, ride. You have to admit, the Timonium Motorcycle Show, February 7th thru 9th, provides us with the biker-fix we so desperately need at the perfect time. It feels like forever since we put our bikes in the cave with their battery tenders and spring seems so far off. The Timonium Motorcycle Show gets your inner biker stirring with a variety of bikes, vendors and entertainment - and it’s all done indoors so you don’t have to worry about freezing your biker bells off. If you plan to be at the Timonium Motorcycle Show there are a few things you should know beginning with the $5 off admission coupon you can download from our website at www.flbdelmarva.com. Once you’ve arrived, look for the Fast Last Biker Magazine Delmarva stage in the SOUTH HALL where a variety of entertainment awaits – Sassy Girls Dance Team, Spokes Model Meet & Greet with Photo Ops, Bike Displays, Model Search, Cougar Search, kitchen talk with Michelle “Chefgirl” Lloyd, and more. On Friday evening, come out to witness the marriage of Jimmy Buckles to Sandra Sanna at the Fast Lane Biker Magazine Two Wheel Wedding. He’s a Prince George’s County police officer and she is employed by the March of Dimes – this couple has dedicated their lives to serving others. Be sure to take the time to wish them well! In the Swap Meet Pavilion, Friday kicks off the the Fast Lane Biker Magazine Baddest Bike Builder Build Off sponsored by the Law Office of Jay Irwin Block. Attendees can watch as expert custom bike builders bring their creations to life. The first builder to finish (build must be street-ready) wins a trophy and cash prize. Once all bikes are complete, the People’s Choice competition begins. Our good friends at ABATE will be on hand to distribute tickets to attendees and your job is to drop a ticket into the voting box at the build you feel deserves the win – it’s that simple! For those of you who are not afraid of the camera, FLBD will be filming the Bike Builder Build Off, and the Timonium Show in general, on behalf of our good friends at Pilgrim Productions, producers of Discovery Channel’s American Thunder and their upcoming work-in-progress Baddest Biker Build Off. IMPORTANT - We will also be conducting Sales Rep searches so if you are looking for a job and you have what it takes to work in this fun and exciting industry, come to BigPoppa! Finally, we have so much to roll out at Timonium so be sure to stop by to learn what we’ve been up to - new technology, new events, giveaways, contests, prizes – we’re worth the trip!! 3

ROLAND MORRISON

World Speed Record Powered StreetLuge The speed bug bit Roland Morrison at a very early age and, growing up in the 60s and 70s, his influences included Buddy Baker, Don Garlits and Evel Knievel and, of course, his parents who both road motorcycles in competitions. He recalls at age 6 or 7 seeing his father adjust the high-speed jet on his mini bike to get it to run better. Just 10 minutes later, Roland was re-adjusting it to make it go even faster. Years later, Roland was finally able to talk his father into allowing him to take his 1974 Harley-Davidson Sportster out for a ride. Roland headed for the newly finished Route 55 in Southern New Jersey, found a stretch of straight road, lay down on the gas tank, put his feet on the rear pegs and opened it up. Everything went fine until he hit about 115mph and the motor started to miss, spit and sputter. He shut the throttle down and coasted to a stop, all the while dreading what was going to happen when he called someone to come trailer him home. Thankfully he noticed the rear cylinder spark plug wire was hanging and, after popping it back into place, he hit the starter and the motor fired up. He continued down that stretch of highway but kept it at 70mph. Roland built his first Streetluge in 2000 when he was 40 years old. Since then, he has run the Powered Streetluge at many ¼ mile drag strips including Texas Mile, Loring Timing Association and Bonneville Salt Flats. His first goal was to break 100mph. He did that and then some. His most memorable? 150+mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Be sure to visit Roland and his Powered Streetluge at the Timonium Motorcycle Show. For more information, visit www.PoweredStreetluge.com.

Originality is rare. Expert craftsmanship is equally hard to come by in modern times. Michael Cole, dubbed “Copper Mike” by his industry peers based on his master copper metal work, is a member of this rare breed. He is a unique blend of artist, metal worker, and master motorcycle builder and each design is influenced by art, antiques, vintage motors, music, and time spent traveling around the United States and Europe. At Gravesend Cycles, Copper Mike challenges himself daily to create handmade motorcycles that are a fusion of vintage design and contemporary function. The result is a refreshing blend of custom motorcycle and rolling art work. Copper Mike was born in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn. At a young age he enjoyed dirt bikes and began taking apart his street bicycles, and adding forks to create customs. At 18, Cole bought his first motorcycle. After a little more than a decade in luxury retail construction, as a true testament to what raw passion can accomplish, he began building his first bike—a ‘58 Harley Panhead. Soon after, he bought into an existing motorcycle shop. This venture served as a stepping stone for what would become his expression of unmatched artistry and love of motorcycles. Cole ultimately refined his own design vision and opened “Gravesend Cycles” in Lindenhurst, New York. Every piece is born in Cole’s mind, refined in his soul, and executed with exacting detail through his hands. Not shy to admit his influences such as New York’s own Indian Larry or the West Coast’s Jesse James, however, instead of following his idols’ designs, he embraces their philosophies: creating handmade motorcycles that are forever cool. Copper Mike prides himself in his abilities to marry this philosophy with his own artistic vision to create hand forged customs that are as stunning visually as they are mechanically. He has become known for a style that is truly original. And after all, originality is rare.

In 1998, David Uhl created his first motorcycle oil painting and, upon taking it to Harley-Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee, he was eagerly welcomed as the first-ever licensed oil painter for The Motor Company. Since then, David has created scores of masterpieces reviving the rich history of this legendary manufacturer. Poring over the company’s B&W photography archives, he has selected numerous compositions and brought them “back to life” in oil on canvas. His timeless style captures the deep emotions Harley-Davidson evokes and will allow the legacy to live on for generations to come.

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director The 2014 legislative session in Annapolis, MD began on January 8th. That means the next 90 days will be very busy for ABATE. Our first lobbying night took place on Monday, January 13th and we will continue to have a presence each Monday evening until the session ends in April. ABATE is endorsing two bills for this session. The first is the helmet modification bill. This bill will be introduced with the same wording as last year’s bill. We are asking for freedom of choice if you are 21 years of age and carry $10,000 worth of health insurance. We decided to cross file this year which means the bill will be introduced in the Senate by Senator Astle and Senator Edwards and also on House side by Del. Bromwell. We will be posting dates and times for hearings as soon as they become available. The second bill addresses motorcycle-only checkpoints. ABATE hopes to nip this in the bud before it becomes an issue in Maryland. Essentially, this bill would prevent law enforcement from conducting motorcycle-only checkpoints. On the administrative side, ABATE of Maryland is working to edit the content of the Maryland drivers’ handbook and its lack of important motorcycle awareness content. As always, we work closely with Maryland State Police, MVA and the State Highway Administration to keep Maryland a motorcycle friendly state.

11

In February, ABATE of Maryland will occupy two booths at the Timonium Motorcycle Show where motorcyclists can learn what ABATE is about and the important role ABATE plays in protecting your rights. We are the only motorcycle rights organization in Maryland. We are your watchdog. ABATE stands vigilant for any legislation that would negatively impact the rights of motorcyclists including road hazards and highway structures that affect us in any way. Everything we do is for the well-being of motorcyclists in Maryland. For only $25 a year, you are making the commitment to insure you are represented in Annapolis. It is a small price to pay for your freedom. If you follow national news, you know that in the state of California, motorcyclists have banded together to fight legislation that would make reflective vests mandatory. In reality, it is an obscure means of covering club names. Like us, California is also fighting mandatory helmets. Motorcyclists from all over the state converged on the capitol in a show of force and unity. This is freedom fighting at its best. This is what ABATE of Maryland and motorcycle rights organizations all over the country do. We stand as one strong unit to protect your rights and preserve your freedom to ride. Find us at the Timonium Show and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have and discuss in detail what ABATE has done and continues to do to insure your rights as a motorcyclist. We hope to see you there!

John Hardison Marketing Guy at Battley Harley-Davidson / Battley Cycles

1. How long have you been with Battley HD / Battley Cycles and what is it you do there? I’ve been working with Battley for two years now. I create and place all of our print advertising and work with advertising vendors to consider things like radio and TV. I believe in making the dealership a destination for bikers, so I run a lot of events in the summer. I try to think “outside the box” and have events that aren’t biker run-of-the-mill such as “Dog Day” “Italian Day,” and “Canada Day.” I’m deeply involved with the local HOG chapter, ran the 2012 MD/DE State HOG Rally, and have been riding for over 28 years. 2. Where were you born and where do you currently reside? I was born in Pasadena, California, spent my teenage years in Washington, DC and I’ve lived in Rockville, MD for the past 17 years. 3. What do you like/admire most about yourself? I’m not shy. I’m the opposite of shy. You may think of a word that is the opposite of shy, but that isn’t me either. I’m more than that; I’m over the top, loud, and love talking to people. 4. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? I’d like to lose some weight, not because I want to stop eating, I love to eat and I love sweets, but I’d like to think that I could live a little longer if I dropped a few pounds, and I’d like to live a long time. 5. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? I’m a huge Star Trek fan, and I collect a lot of stuff, but the most extravagant would probably be my two Star Trek pinball machines and my one Star Trek video game. They take up a lot of space. 6. Where would you most like to reside if you could? I’d live right next to Disney Land. All that California sunshine and riding, plus Disney Land, plus In-N-Out burgers - Paradise! 7. Who is your fictional hero? I admire all the characters from Star Trek. The world they live in is not realistic, it is too goodie-two-shoes, but I admire many of their ideals like helping people they come across and fighting a battle only as a last resort. 8. Who do you consider your real life hero? Thomas Jefferson. Of all our founding fathers, I think he was the

biggest supporter of the separation of church and state, an issue that even 238 years later threatens the diversity of our culture. 9. What is the most awesome thing you own? I don’t own her, but the most awesome thing in my life is my daughter, Melina. At 8 she is getting excited about motorcycles and wants to ride with me all the time. I don’t know how long that will last, or how long she will think that I am cool, but I love the feeling and I never want it to end. 10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Q: How’s your arm? (I broke the humeral head off the top of my left arm in July when I wrecked my bike on a ride in West Virginia.) A: The arm is doing well, still sore and a little weak, but getting better. 11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? When Bill Clinton was President, I used to do impressions of him. I’d go to trade shows, conventions, and parties and tell jokes. Back then he was younger and I was thinner and we looked alike. It was a fun 8 years and I’d like to do it again, but he isn’t president anymore so it’s a tough wish. 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? I’d switch with the President of the United States. It just seems there are so many things wrong with this country that I’d like to try and fix with some Executive Orders! Or at least get a better understanding of why things are so messed up with our country. 13. What would you do if you were able to retire? Take a motorcycling scuba trip. There are so many great spots to scuba dive along our coasts, but flooded caverns and mines are plentiful in the country’s interior, too, and they are all accessible by a retired dude with some flippers and a motorcycle to get him there. Stop by the Battley Cycles booth at the Timonium Motorcycle Show and say hello to John and get your FREE photo on a Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva cover. Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon • Kennett Square • PA Thankfully, we’re getting closer to a new riding season but for now is still frozen noses and drippy balls wait - I mean drippy noses and frozen balls. It’s been a brutal winter at times but let’s hope that means a long, warm riding season. This month I rode out to Kennett Square, PA to a place that a few of you recommended in the past. Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon is known for wild game, great craft beers, and a great environment to enjoy both. You walk in and are greeted by an awesome bar on the right and an old-school, tile floor leads you into the dining area where you’ll find tall wooden booths as well as traditional tables. The menu was full of wild game options offering everything from venison to wild boar pork chops. My choice for the evening was the bacon buffalo loaf. I started off with my usual Crown Royal and also a cup of the gator gumbo with craw fish and Andouille sausage. The sausage was cooked to perfection with a great snap in the casing. The craw fish and gator was soft, not chewy, and had excellent flavor. It was a good way to start the meal. Next came the bacon buffalo loaf with smashed potatoes and a side of cauliflower and carrots. The portion size was perfect and looking at it you would never know it wasn’t mom’s traditional meatloaf. I sliced into the loaf, took a bite and was happy to find perfectly cooked, lean meat with great flavor, mixed with a bit of bacon.

It truly felt like a home-cooked meal made by mom. I was thrilled by the meal to say the least. There were plenty of options for dessert but I decided to mix my booze and dessert and have a chocolate stout to end my night. I did check out a few other tables and saw some delicious looking crab nachos and I even snagged a taste of another table’s melted gorgonzola fries. Hey, I couldn’t resist. First, they were waffle fries (one of my vices), and the melted cheese was calling my name so I helped myself (thank you Jen and Drew for allowing me to interrupt your meal). If you are ever in the Kennett Square area, or looking for something different, Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon is worth the trip and I recommend you take that ride to sample their great food. The menu changes frequently as far as the draft beer and wild game goes so make the trip often. Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon is located at 108 W. State Street in Kennett Square, PA. Also, check out their website for some interesting upcoming dinners including a wild game and wine night (www.halfmoonrestaurant.com).

DOWN HOME COOKIN’ wi t h Michelle ‘Chefgirl’ Lloyd

Whole Rockfish w/ Wild Rice & Mushrooms

Ingredients: 2 cups grape tomatoes 1 diced shallot 2 teaspoons chopped garlic 1 medium onion diced 1/4 cup olive oil

2 sprigs mint 4 sprigs oregano 6 sprigs thyme Salt & pepper to taste 1 sliced lemon

1 large whole fish cleaned & gutted Optional Suggestion: You can also add some diced jalapenos and a cup of white wine to spice this up!

Combine all the ingredients but the fish and the lemon. Allow to marinate for about 30 minutes and then pour over and into fish. Salt the fish inside and out. Layer the lemon slices on top of and inside the fish. With the change in the weather this light and healthy dish can be baked or grilled. Heat oven to 450° or prepare grill. Heat should be medium to high. To bake, place the fish in the roasting pan that has been sprayed with food release and cook for about 25 minutes depending on size of fish. If you are grilling the fish place in aluminum foil that has been sprayed with food release and seal it up. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes sealed then, while wearing oven mitts, slice the foil open for the last 5 to 10 minutes so it can get crisp on the exterior.

Ingredients: 1½ cup fish or vegetable stock 3 tablespoons butter ½ teaspoon mint 1 cup oyster mushrooms (or whatever variety you choose)

Wild Rice & Mushrooms 1 small onion finely diced 1 teaspoon thyme 1¼ cups wild rice 1 finely chopped carrot Approx. 8 cremini or button mushrooms

1 teaspoon salt 2 minced cloves of garlic 2 bay leaves ½ teaspoon oregano

In a pan, melt butter than add carrots and onion until softened. Add rice and stir until slightly toasty. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Cover with lid about 10 to 12 minutes. Cook until the liquid has been reduced. Discard bay leaves and serve. Suggestion: I like to serve this dish with warm pita bread. You can either brush some olive oil on the pita and place it on the grill for a minute or toast it in the oven. I suggest olives and feta as a side dish as well.

Enjoy & Happy Eating!
