Here we sit on a January afternoon and it’s a balmy 21˚ outside - that’s not taking the wind chill into account. According to our local weather channel it “feels like” -2˚. Both bikes are tucked away in the garage, hooked up to trickle chargers and we allow ourselves to indulge in a little fantasy about warmer climates and winding, scenic roads. Spring seems so far off… too far off. One way to beat the winter blahs is to participate in off-season events. FLBD is looking forward to the Timonium Motorcycle Show, February 8th thru 10th, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. We’ve been working closely with Rich Kohles and his crew and they put together an incredible show. FLBD has something special planned for the show as well and it just might help chase away some of those winter blues. A repeat definite on our schedule is Rolling Thunder in Washington, DC. We have big plans for Rolling Thunder weekend and are working with Carlos and Michelle, aka Big Dog Moto Tours, to organize a weekend package that will include hotel accommodations, a concert on Friday evening, May 24th, a pool party on Saturday evening, May 25th and, of course, the ride itself on Sunday, May 26th. The basic plan is in place utilizing a resort hotel in the

PB CHOPPS AND RODS/PB CHOPPERS has been building and restoring bikes, car, and trucks since 1987.

2) What exactly do you do in that capacity? Design, fabricate, and finish everything that enters my shop. I’m not one of those “sit in the office” bosses who is never seen working on a project. I am definitely a hands-on guy!

9) Who do you consider your real life hero? My father, H.A. Wubben 10) What is the most awesome thing you own? The DALE EARNHARDT SR. bike.

3) What can you tell us about your first design? My first project involved a case of beer, a torch and stick welder along with a garage full of friends. When the sun came up that next morning, I had crafted my first custom ride.

11) What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? The question is: Where do you get the ideas to build so many different style bikes? My answer is: I grew up in the 60’s!

4) Where were you born? Forest City, Iowa - home of Winnebago Motor Homes and me.

12) If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? I’ve been working on bikes and cars for over 40 years and never wanted to do anything else.

5) Where do you currently reside and for how long? I have lived in Moravia, Iowa since 1976 (population 600 and home of PB Choppers).

13) What would you do if you were able to retire? I would ride the four corners of the U.S. and stop by all the places I have ever been invited and stay as long as needed. I would then continue my course overseas to my foreign friends.

6) What is the one thing you would change about yourself? I would have taken advantage of more opportunities I have had over the years.

The Avenue of the Giants

Is it just me or does it seem to you like this winter is flying by? Thank goodness! Someone once said, “Nobody hates winter like a biker does.” I find that saying to be very true. This month, I’d like to share one of BIG DOG’s all-time favorite roads to moto-tour. It is not local but it offers one of the 8 Wonders of the World and, therefore, it should be on your bucket list! Last year we offered and toured this world-famous 31 mile section of road that runs parallel to the US #101 and boasts some of the most awe-inspiring views and roads you’ll ever experience as a rider - the Avenue of the Giants located north of San Francisco, along the Pacific Coast Highway and US #101. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by almost 52,000 acres of Redwood groves known as Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It hosts the largest stand of virgin Redwoods in the world. Along this section of road you will view the most outstanding display of these world record giant trees. The Redwoods belt actually extends over 1250 miles, from San Francisco to Seattle and points north. California’s Coastal Redwoods are the world’s tallest and oldest known trees. The average mature tree can be several hundred years old, stand 200 to 240 feet tall and diameters of 10 to 15 feet. Some have measured more than 360 feet. The tallest tree in the world, The Stratosphere Giant, which is located in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, is just over 370 feet tall! Imagine how deep the roots must go.

As for the roads, you can find a delightful mix of long sweeping turns that follow the Eel River’s edge as well as tight twisty switchbacks that climb into the peaks of the coastal mountain ranges and drop down along the coast.

This area is a temperate zone with moderate temps of 45-70 degrees Here’s a mental image: You could not lay one of these trees down on year round. It can be slightly cooler in the upper elevations and along the its side inside of a professional football stadium without parts of the roots coast. One minute finds you riding through thick Tule fog and the next and branches extending into the end zone seating areas. basking in the bright warm California sun under Azure Blue skies! In the most favorable parts of their range, Coastal Redwoods can live more than two thousand years. One of the first protected areas in the park known as Rockefeller Grove is where 10,000 acres of this indescribable beauty will awe any visitor. Along the many roads and trails in this forest, you will find the 4th, 6th and 8th tallest trees in the world! You will also find the 2nd tallest tree, the Champion Coast Redwood, as well as the #1 tallest tree, the Stratosphere Giant, with a height of 370 feet and a base circumference of over 53 feet!

So right about now you’re thinking to yourself, “That’s all fine, wonderful and dandy but how can I experience this for myself?” Funny you should ask. We will meet our guests in San Francisco on the evening of June 28th and depart for central Oregon early on the 29th. Lobbying sessions begin January 9th and are held each Monday night during session which begins January 14th. ABATE meets at the state office in Annapolis at 6:00 until 6:30 pm and walk over together to speak to our legislators. ABATE will address issues that concern motorcyclists the most including helmet laws, distracted driving, road conditions and any other legislation which may affect motorcyclists. In February, ABATE will be present at the Timonium Motorcycle Show so please stop by to learn more about the organization that supports you. We will also be selling raffle tickets for a 2013 Road Glide. The winner will be selected in June at our 30th Annual State Party in Cumberland, MD. You also might want to check out our annual Freedom Rally. The tentative date is March 4, 2013. This will be an allday event and will include a Freedom Ride, food and drinks, ABATE information at our state office and the Freedom Rally at Lawyers Mall in the evening.

It’s plenty cold outside and hopefully you are working on your bikes, prepping for the upcoming season. I personally have been busy doing a variety of home improvement projects at the castle, but I plan on at least waxing the old girl. Sadly, I didn’t ride this month but I did take a break from hardwood flooring and painting to go pound a few beers at a place called C P Goodwins in Wilmington, DE.

If can get a good meal and a few beers for $20 with tip, I’m a happy camper. If you’re looking for a very reasonable deal on some good eats and brews, swing by C P Goodwins at 105 Kirkwood Square, Wilmington, DE and enjoy yourself.

C P Goodwins is a nice little hole-in-the-wall bar hidden in back of a shopping center. I walked Until then, remember, it’s just another day in in after a hard day of “improving” and found paradise. a great Sunday special - any burger from the menu, a side of fries and five Miller Lite bottles for $15. Now before you get all skeptical, the burger is a real burger, as in regular size. Not one of these half-sized burgers made special for the deal. For my first visit, I decided to try the Philly burger. This is a ½ pound, medium rare burger topped with onions, peppers, mushrooms and cheddar cheese. It came with a handful of hand-cut fries. I have to admit, the entire meal was just great. In fact, it was SO great I went back the following week to have the Red Foxx - a 1/2 pound burger topped with mac and cheese and drenched in wing sauce. Both burgers were damn good and the only thing better than this deal would be if it came with some Crown but, hey, I’ll take what I can get. There are a few more options for the deal so I might have to stop in and try them. I mean where else can you grab a homemade burger,

She is passionate when it comes to nutrition and fitness and is employed as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor. Her specialty is working with clients with unique needs such as those with chronic pain. Elle Michelle is also pursuing her graduate degree and has been interviewing with several physician assistant programs. She hopes to be practicing medicine in the near future. But it’s not all work for this ambitious beauty. Elle Michelle also likes to read, work out, hike and relax with good food, music and friends. When it comes to bikes, she grew up listening to her dad’s crazy biker stories. He always owned a motorcycle but the closest Elle Michelle came to riding solo was on her dirt bike as a kid – she still sports a couple of scars. MY TRIP TO ETHIOPIA

As I head to the airport I still haven’t a single idea what to expect from my upcoming trip to Ethiopia. Of course, I knew the name of this exotic country and knew where it was located but even with the help of Google I could only paint a spongy picture of what would happen to me. But 10 hours after liftoff, my plane landed in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and home to about 3.5 million people. LOOP TO DEBRE LIBANOS Once the decision to travel to Ethiopia was made, I was eager to locate a motorcycle rental shop so I could explore this fantastic country on two wheels. There are very few places where you can get a bike and none were actually rental stations buy more like “local tour operators.” Fortunately, with help from my friends in Addis Ababa, I made arrangements to borrow an elder KTM 640 from a guy named Carlos. On my way to pick up the KTM, I was fascinated by the big differences in road conditions. Except for main roads, only a few are paved. Getting to Carlos’ house was actually a big adventure – all we knew were the directions sent to us by Carlos in the form of a self-made road map so we wouldn’t miss the turns. We set off, clearing our way through the city traffic of Ethiopia’s capital (only a few vehicles and hundreds of pedestrians). We had to pay attention to this bulk of people – statistically 2 people die each day in Ethiopian traffic because they just don’t know how to act in traffic. We picked up the bike and started on our daily loop to Depre Libanos. Once outside of

Addis, road conditions increased dramatically and within a few miles we travelled one of the best roads I have ever ridden on – well paved, clean and void of pot holes. It was an incredible difference to the city of Addis to see the untouched landscape and the natural charm of the far-flung villages. Whenever we passed by the locals, oodles of hands bounced up to greet us and their shiny eyes followed us until we vanished around the next corner. After a two hours ride we arrived in Debre Libanos. Built in the 13th century, this monastery once was a powerful official in the Ethiopian Church. The monastery itself is a well preserved building, however, the area around is even more beautiful with its incredible vistas and fascinating landscapes. EASTER IN LALIBELA Did you know that Ethiopia is the year 2003? And did you also know that if it is 6 a.m. in East Africa Time, Ethiopian people will tell you it’s noon? It’s true, officially this country uses a variation of the Coptic calendar and has its own way of time-setting. So if you travel there as an uninformed tourist you might get a little confused!

Since Ethiopia covers 1,104,300 square kilometers of land it is very hard to get an overall impression of this country. So we decided to leave the bike in Addis Ababa and fly to the North instead. It was Easter weekend so we choose Lalibela as our destination, perhaps the most religious place in all of Ethiopia. In fact, most of the Ethiopians believe that the roots of religion have to be found in their country. Two hours later the plane landed near Lalibela. The landscape changed from green, wide land to canyons and mountains with very little vegetation. Lalibela, the place so famous for its Eleven Churches, was not more than a small village and definitely not made for tourists. Once we arrived at our hotel, which was aptly a former monastery, we packed our camera, put on some good shoes and went to the goat market. For Easter celebration, every Ethiopian gets a goat or a sheep in order to make an Easter fry. The poorer residents who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford spending 250 to 400 Birr (about US$15-25) for a goat, buy a much cheaper chicken instead. We struggled through a huge mass of goats, sheep, donkeys and people, and enjoyed being part of this gigantic spectacle. Later, we enjoyed a guided tour through the Eleven Churches of Lalibela. Built during the 12th and 13th century by King Lali-

bela these eleven rock-hewn churches served as hiding places from the Muslims. Today, many go there especially at Easter weekend. The next day we planned a hiking trip. Lalibela is located at 2,500 meters sea level but this hike would bring us up to 2,900 meters to another monastery. On our return trip, our local guide invited us for coffee at his sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home for a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. After coffee, some homemade injera was served consisting of lentils, boiled eggs and cup cream all arranged on a sourdough pancake with a cup of selfmade honey beer. It was a memorable experience to see their house from inside, to see how basic their living is and how much they not miss all the money, the luxury and the comfort we are used to. LOOP TO WENCHI CRATER Our last excursion, and probably one of the most beautiful, was the ride to Wenchi Crater, a big volcano crater about two hours west of Addis Ababa. Ambo, a city close to Wenchi Crater is well known in Ethiopia for its natural mineral water and also as a wellness resort. Since we planned to go for quite a long hike we decided to stay overnight here. The next morning we would start out early to walk around the crater and enjoy its untouched natural surroundings. The crater itself was incredibly wide and filled with crystal clear water. The surrounding vegetation was deep green. The hiking paths led once around the crater and would be a perfect off-road track for motorcycles, although even by foot it was exciting and challenging. In one of the side valleys we passed by a number of hot springs. All in all this country offered a variety of treasures. If you take away the simplicity, lack of convenience comforts and poverty, one can easily appreciate how rich this country is in culture, natural beauty and hospitality.

Capt. Mango de Cayo Hueso Capt. Arturo Montoya de Palma, in one of his many voyages to the Florida Keys, visited the island of Cayo Hueso (Key West) where he met, courted and wed Moena, the sister of the Calusa tribe leader. The Montoyas returned to Palma de Mallorca later in the year. Jesus Verde Montoya was born to Arturo and Moena on January 8, 1678. After the early deaths of both his mother and father, 16-year-old Jesus snuck aboard a merchant ship headed to England, never to return to Spain. In England, Jesus changed his name to Jesse Green to accommodate a more Anglo environment. After years of serving on various ships, he became Captain of the Inconchnido. Jesse soon turned to piracy and changed the name of his ship to The Blue Pearl” and adopted the pirate name of Capt. Mango de Cayo Hueso. Capt. Mango’s career as a pirate is not known for plundering, pillaging or killing but rather for his infamous acts of debauchery, womanizing and rum consumption. During his life it is rumored he had 12 wives as well as a mistress in every port. Capt. Mango was hung in March, 1722 on false charges of piracy. Of course this story of Capt. Mango is complete fiction. He was born in the mind of Jesse Green at a Jimmy Buffet concert in 2002. Jesse has been a Parrot Head for over 30 years and his tailgating at the concerts is legendary. The idea of dressing like a pirate is a quick prep for partying before each concert. The name Capt. LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com . www.cycleattorney.com It’s amazing how in the last five years, much of the communication between my firm and my motorcycle accident clients is taking place via social media and e-mail. As a result, every time we get a call from a potential client we tell them to strictly use their computers to communicate with us and to stay off social media sites. As a motorcycle accident lawyer, most of my clients suffer severe injuries and a large percentage use their computers to document and memorialize their injuries and to locate a motorcycle accident attorney, or more specifically a Pennsylvania or New Jersey motorcycle attorney. We warn our clients about the dangers of social media, because the law firms that are hired by the insurance companies have begun to request passwords, giving them unfettered access to any social media sites you may have created. Although I have written on this subject before, recently during the deposition of one of my clients, the defense attorney asked my client for his Facebook information. We did not provide it and I am now responding to a motion that has been filed to force my client to produce that information. I know that it may be second nature to go onto Facebook and advise all of your “friends” that you have been involved in a motorcycle accident, however, the posting of injury photos and the damage to your bike could end up being used against you. Recently, the trial court in Indiana County, PA after reviewing an opinion from Northumberland County, PA in the case of Zimmerman vs. Weiss Markets, dealt with the discovery of Facebook information and opined that “by virtue of the Plaintiff’s allegations in her complaint in the personal injury matter, the Plaintiff placed her “physical condition at issue”. Accordingly the Court held; that the Defendant was entitled to conduct discovery in an effort to obtain information relevant and related to the cause of action stated, which may include access to social networking sites”. The Court further ruled that a Plaintiff “cannot maintain a reasonable expectation of privacy when she created the account and voluntarily posted the information knowing that the information could become publically available”. Therefore, if you are ever in a situation where you need to retain a motorcycle accident attorney, I would advise that you dial 1-888-CYCLE-LAW, ask for Lee Gaber and temporarily sign off of social media sites. Given the severity of most of my client’s injuries, once they hire a motorcycle accident attorney they expect our office to do everything we can to recover the maximum settlement possible. caused the accident and your own insurance company for underinsured motorist benefits. Recently in Allegheny County, in the matter of Stepanovich v. McGraw and State Farm Insurance Company, this is exactly what happened. The Judge presiding over the case went on to characterize the insurance company as “another interested party” and permitted a “double teaming” of the Plaintiff by allowing the insurance company and the person who caused the accident to have counsel during the trial. As a result the Plaintiff lost the trial and post-trial motions were filed. After the post-trial motions, the Judge reversed his own ruling, granted a new trial directing that the defendant insurance company should be identified to the jury. The trial judge wrote “by allowing the insurance company to remain unidentified, was advancing the perpetuation of a myth that has outlived its usefulness”. The Judge further opined that virtually every juror that owns an automobile or drives one, knows about the necessity in our complex society to have insurance on that vehicle. Jurors are also aware under Pennsylvania Law, that every automobile owner must have his vehicle insured, thus it is a denial of reality to pretend that insurance is not involved in every motor vehicle case. In doing so, the judge was actually saying that every reasonable juror understands that there is motor vehicle insurance, or should be, in every auto or motorcycle claim and therefore to refuse to identity the name of the underinsured motorist carrier for fear of prejudicing that insurance carrier, is in reality a myth.
