ROB GIBSON • Tintype Artist For the first time at the 2018 Timonium Motorcycle Show attendees will meet Tintype Photographer, Rob Gibson and his “world’s fastest darkroom.” Gibson photographs vintage motorcycle and car events using tintype photography which is then developed in his travel mate, a 1938 Harley-Davidson sidecar which doubles as his dark room. Gibson uses wet plate Collodion photography which is the same process used in the 1860s. It requires coating a glass or tin photographic plate, sensitizing it in the dark room, rushing it to the camera, making the exposure, rushing it back to the darkroom and developing it before it dries out. The process was used from the 1850s until dry plates and film took over in the 1880s. Some of Gibson’s cameras are over 150 years old and he uses the same chemicals that were used during the cameras popularity period. Gibson’s photos were featured in TV series and movies such as Gods and Generals, Cold Mountain, Into the West, Assassination of Jesse James, National Treasure. He was featured on several networks including History Channel, Discovery Channel, A&E, and PBS, and demonstrated tintype photography for the White House Press Corp and the Smithsonian. ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

Thankfully, there seems to be no pending legislation concerning motorcycles in the state for the second half of this legislative session. However, ABATE of Delaware is aggressively pursuing some revisions to existing laws. We would like to see the color options for LED accent lighting expanded to include all colors, not just white and amber. I haven’t seen or heard of a rider being pulled over because of the color of their LED’s. But that may not prevent an LEO using that as an add-on charge should you get stopped for another infraction. So far this winter, the weather has been a roller coaster with temps in the teens followed by 60-degree days. Some of us are in the middle of revamping our rides for the spring. Others are chomping at the bit to get out on the street as soon as possible. If you decide to take advantage of the decent temperatures and ride here are a couple of tips to keep in mind: Be aware that other road users are not used to seeing

motorcycles out and around. While not intentional, they may hit you. There is no malice on their part, it’s just that they’ve completely forgotten about motorcycles and will be less likely to see you in traffic. I treat everything I encounter out there like it’s trying to kill me. That forces me to see every hazard and anticipate the worst outcome. There will be sand and salt everywhere. This is especially a problem in corners where it seems that every grain ever dropped collects, just waiting to cause you issues. Besides being like marbles; salt is also corrosive on metal parts. Be sure to wipe down your bike when you get home. Especially if you’ve had to ride through wet spots. For more information or to become a member, visit www.abateofde.com.

New Orleans! with Marty Sullivan

Good Motorcycle Morning! Whenever I’m introduced to some new kind of food, I do my best to find the most excellent version of that food so that when I try it for the first time, it should be extraordinary. I did this with “Poutine” in Montreal, “Salchipapas” in Lima, and “Sashimi” in Seoul. They were great! So, when it came to “Beignets,” I had to find the world famous “Café du Monde” in the French quarter of New Orleans. On this day, I was heading from Grand Isle, Louisiana to Mobile, Alabama, with a planned stop in New Orleans for some beignets. This was a small part of an Epic Ride that included the entire circumference of the Gulf of Mexico from the Mexico border all the way to Key West Florida. I started out in the heavily bug infested Grand Isle and made my way north towards New Orleans. There had been a lot of rain during the previous days causing some major flooding and it shut down many of the roads on the delta and bayous of Louisiana between Grand Isle and New Orleans. As it seems with all my adventures, 1.5 hrs. turned into 3 hrs. I was constantly running into flooded roads. I had to backtrack about 4 times and find new ways to go north. No worries, I was in luck. Café du Monde is 24 hrs. First, I had to find the place. “Nawlens” traffic is no joke. It took a while to make my way to the French quarter. Once there, I encountered a 6-ft. leprechaun, some horse drawn carriages, and lots of shop keepers spreading slippery soap all over the roads so they can scrub down the place from the party the night before. Shady lost her footing more than once on that slippery soap, it made for a very interesting ride.

Eventually I followed a horse drawn carriage down Decatur St. to Café Du Monde. It was so busy, tourists and waiters everywhere, but luckily there were still tables available. I parked the bike, headed in, and grabbed a table. My waitress came by and asked me what I’d like, and I thought “Don’t you only sell one thing?” She had to school me on the ordering process but eventually we agreed on one order of beignets and milk. Then heaven arrived. Disclaimer: If you’re diabetic, don’t eat these. If you’re watching your waistline, don’t eat these. If your cholesterol is too high, don’t eat these. But for everyone else: EAT THESE! Wow, how wonderful they are! I promise you that no donut you’ve ever had, or any kind of pastry you’ve ever had, can beat these. Fresh, perfect, light, pastry, sifted powdered sugar, and a tiny carton of milk like you used to get in elementary school. So great, so awesome! It was the perfect mid-day snack after battling flooded Louisiana bayou roads and New Orleans traffic. 10 out of 10, I’d do it again. :-) Could you do me favor? The next time you’re headed to New Orleans, could you let me know? I just might have to tag along for some world-famous beignets from Café Du Monde! Good Motorcycle Morning!
