SENIOR MOMENTS

Craig Beachler’s father was a biker in a motorcycle club and Craig learned the old school ways very early in life. In 1962, he began riding a Harley-Davidson Flathead four-five. That was the same year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service where he served on the old diesel boats for about ten years before moving on to nuclear power fast attack boats. Riding in the service would get interrupted by unit deployments but Craig continued to indulge his passion for riding in between underway periods. Craig sold the ‘62 to buy a 1952 Panhead and rode that bike through most of California while stationed on the west coast. In 1985, Craig was transferred to the east coast and changed rides to a 1966 Shovelhead FL. After 26 years of submarine service, he entered civilian life as a yacht sales service manager on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Just before retirement from civilian work, Craig changed bikes again to his current ride, a 2006 FLSTC. Craig is married to a “much younger woman” – she’s 32. They decided not to have children because neither wanted to give up the freedom of riding. His wife rides her own HD Nightster and they travel on the road with both bikes together.

They usually tent camp with the bikes on long hauls or weekenders. Craig isn’t sure what she loves more, him or the Harleys. favorite Craig’s ride area is the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. He believes that once biking is in your blood it becomes a lifetime riding addiction. He enjoys the solitude of the highway, overnight tent camping and meeting new riding friends throughout the country. His advice to young riders is “slow down and enjoy the ride safely.” If you live through a motorcycle crash, the injuries sustained will haunt you in your later years.

Anthony & Michele Martone O WNERS/O PERATORS OF STARPHOTOS

Anthony Martone has been infatuated with photography since his high school days. What began as providing photography services to friends and family for small weddings and such over the years, progressed into event photography. Now, Anthony and Michele, who have been married for 15 years, work together running the business. They opened Starphotos when they moved back to VA and have been busy ever since! Michele does most of the coordination, behind the scenes tasks, and shoots for events and other projects as needed. You have probably viewed Starphoto’s cover and centerfold work in Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva. The Martones also organize several events in Roanoke, VA including bike nights at local bars and assist with a variety of charitable efforts.

We really enjoy meeting new people and we get to see some great places. 7) Who is your hero? fictional Anthony’s fictional hero is Captain America; Michele pleads the 5th. 8) Who do you consider your real life hero? Anthony’s real life heroes are his brother Larry who was a Marine in Vietnam and who is no longer with us and Anthony’s nephew, Justin, a Marine as well, who was lost to us in Iraq in 2006 - Semper Fi. Michele’s real life heroes are all those currently serving in the armed forces and all her family who served or are serving now.

1) How long have you been involved with your business and what exactly do you do? We have been in business for a little over 5 years now. We are freelance photographers who do everything from studio setting pictures to centerfold and cover shoots. We also have a mobile studio and can provide on-sight shoots as well.

9) What is the most awesome thing you own? Anthony’s is his 1940 Polaroid Land Camera and it still works.

2) Where were you born? We both originate from the north – Anthony was born in Worcester, MA and Michele was born in Bangor, ME.

10) What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? “Can I hold your light?” to which I reply, “Umm, nah, I got this.”

3) Where do you currently reside and for how long? We currently live in Roanoke, VA and have lived there for the past 7 years – prior to that we lived in Orlando, FL.

11) If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Nothing. We really love what we do except maybe landing a large account for an agency.

4) What do you like/admire most about yourself? Umm we’re not really conceited but, since you asked, we are told we have a great eye for photography!

12) If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Anthony would like to be the main photographer for Hot Rod Magazine. Michele is happy being herself.

5) What is the one thing you would change about yourself? Two things, actually: Fatter wallet, skinnier body.

13) What would you do if you were able to retire? Travel overseas, go on cruise and maybe relax a little for a change.

The Historic National Road to Sideling Hill Exhibit Center Run

DISTANCE: 110 miles one way following our suggested route. It can easily last a whole day of riding when going roundtrip along this route. TRAVEL TIME: Approximately 3 hours provided you hit mostly green lights through Frederick (jump on I#70 for a quick go around of the city) and there are no school buses or tractors on the roads. ROADS: Mostly rural roads with some city riding - forest, country ﬁelds, some rivers edge, slightly hilly and mostly single lane roads. Occasionally the road may have multiple lanes. DESTINATION ELEVATION: 2310 ft. above sea level - Maryland, Pennsylvania & West Virginia are viewable from this point. Primary roads: Baltimore National Pike (US40), Old National Road (US144), Lappans Road and Clear Springs Road (MD68) ALTERNATE FAST ROUTE: Interstate 70 if that’s how you roll! KEY NOTE: Many bikes have tanks with 100115 mile ranges. Don’t worry; exit 72 which is just west of the pass has gasoline, bathrooms and even food! Aside from that, there are many places to stop and eat/fuel along the way.

As riders, we long for roads that take us far from the dangerous riding conditions and hustle and bustle of city living. Since living neatly tucked between Baltimore and Annapolis, MD, one of my favorite “Dog Runs” starts near my home and winds its way to a breathtaking overlook known as the Sideling Hill Exhibit Center in western Maryland. I can do this run and make it last all day or I’ve been known to ride it in under 4 hours. There are many options but my favorite is to slap on the Mp3 player, jump on the interstates and “Boogity Boogity Boogity!” If you would like Google Maps links that will provide you with the a scenic route with the least amount of interstate riding and minimal traffic, visit the BDMT website at www.BIGDOGsMotoTours.com or scan the QR code located on this page. Did you know? What I like most about riding a road is that it gives me a sense of being connected. Our roadways bind this country together allowing for all types of transportation of people and products. Too that end, US40 was created. The historic “National Road” (also known as “Cumberland Road” throughout most of Maryland) can also connect you from Atlantic City, NJ on the Atlantic Coast all the way to the Snyderville Basin located just west of Salt Lake City, UT. The Cumberland Road section was opened in 1806 and it was the first major improved highway in the United States to be built by the federal government. The approximately 620-mile (1,000 km) long “National Road” provided a connection between the Potomac and Ohio Rivers. Today, US40 totals well over 2300 miles and has served as a gateway to the West for untold thousands of settlers. When rebuilt for the first time in the 1830s, the Cumberland Road became the first road in the US to use same size aggregate binder on top to create a state of the art road surface. This was the beginning of America’s love affair with the road and the machines we ride on them. Of Special Note: The Sideling Hill Road cut on Interstate 68 and US40 is a 340-foot (100 m) deep notch excavated from the ridge of Sideling Hill, about 7 miles (11 km) west of Hancock in Washington County, Maryland. It is notable as an impressive man-made mountain pass, visible from miles away, and is considered to be one of the best rock exposures in Maryland and the entire northeastern United States. Almost 810 feet (250 m) of strata in a tightly folded syncline are exposed in this road cut. Although other exposures may surpass Sideling Hill in either thickness of exposed strata or in quality of geologic structure, few can equal its combination of both. 7

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director • ABATE of Maryland, Inc. January is not only the beginning of a new year for ABATE but the beginning of the 2013 legislative session. This is when ABATE is at its best. In November, we completed our legislative workshop in preparing for the new session. We looked at what we did last year and prepared the final touches on what needs to be addressed this year. Not all motorcycle issues need to be dealt with legislatively. Much of our issues can be dealt with administratively. Throughout the year we meet with State Highway, Maryland Department of Transportation, MVA and the Maryland State Police to sort through these issues and try to resolve them in that manner. ABATE of Maryland also sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists. This is a five year commitment. Over the years we have been labeled as “the helmet people”. It is not just about helmets. We have many issues to address each year including failure to yield right of way causing death or grave in-

jury, distracted driving, malfunctioning traffic signals, handicap tags and anything else that comes up which would affect motorcyclists. ABATE and MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation) will continue to monitor E15 fuel. Of course, we will address the helmet and freedom of choice issue. Wednesday, January 9th, is the opening of the 2013 session. Each Monday night (beginning Jan. 14th, 2013), ABATE of Maryland officers and members meet at our state office in Annapolis at 6 pm and walk over to the state house to speak with our legislators. It is important that each Monday night we have a good turnout in order to meet with everyone we need to meet with. This is a good opportunity for motorcyclists in Maryland to see what goes on in Annapolis during session. I am happy to say that I survived the holidays and hopefully you did too. Not that my family is crazy or anything, but I prefer them in small doses. So after some quality family time, I found myself in need of booze and good food. I drove around (yes, I actually drove on this particular night because there was snow on the ground) until I came to Mike and Nick’s Italian Sports Bar in Hockessin, DE. I must admit, this was not accidental. The simple fact is that it was near a friend’s work and he was buying, so I was in.

I’ve already decided to give Mike and Nick’s another visit because I watched many good-looking pizzas coming from the kitchen, along with a few very appealing sandwiches. They offer specials almost every night of the week and a DJ on Friday nights. My next feast will most likely include a porkette sandwich and pizza. I think this eatery is worth a visit so be sure to swing by Mike and Nick’s Italian Sports Bar, 30 Lantana Drive, Hockessin, When we arrived, the hostess showed us to a table because DE 19707. the bar was packed. The wings come in hot, mild, garlic parmesan and BBQ. Until the weather gets warmer, just keep telling yourself that I opted for an order of hot, an order of garlic parmesan, and a bucket of Miller Lites. The wings were ample in size for the price, it’s just another day in paradise. but I wasn’t a fan of the garlic parmesan. The garlic was so overpowering that it was more like biting into a clove of garlic and you only tasted a hint of wing. The hot wings, however, were just right - not tongue numbing and a sufficient amount of flavor. I also decided to try one of the varieties of sandwiches on the menu and ordered a Harkes Grilled Chicken Caprese with a side of fries. A sub roll came to the table topped with a grilled chicken breast, tomatoes, pesto sauce, arugula and fresh mozzarella. The presentation was nice and the flavors blended perfectly. The only tweaking I would do is making the chicken breast a little plumper – it was a little thin in my opinion. However, after a dozen wings, an order of fries, half of a sandwich, and a bucket of beers, I can

The motorcycle community lost a fun loving, generous, us, humanitarian and co-owner of the High Seas Rally on Oct. 31, 2012. Debbie Anderson, the creator of the HOHS HS Dialysis Fund lost her battle with cancer during the 2012 High Seas Rally Western Caribbean cruise. Debbie and her husband of 37 years (Dean) are the creators, chiefs, cooks and bottle washers of the WorldÕs Only Biker Rally on a Cruise Ship. An exclusive worldwide biker rally that sells out almost 15 months in advance each year. Ten years ago, this husband and wife team created what has been labeled, Òthe rally thatÕs almost too much funÓ. While Dean was in charge of creating the fun activities, Debbie created the HOHS Kidney Dialysis Fund to provide motorcycle riders or their friends that are connected to kidney dialysis blood cleaning machines to come along with the rally and have the vacation of a lifetime too.

That vacation would be on the same cruise ship as the 7 day rally to Alaska, Western Caribbean, Mexican Riviera or next yearÕs new itinerary, the Eastern Caribbean. During the past 15 cruises, Debbie raised over 1.5 million dollars to pay for the dialysis patientÕs airfare, balcony suite, medical staff, dialysis treatments on the ship and to give them spending money during the cruises. This past rally cruise alone raised over $300,000.00. Debbie attended the last 3 cruises while under cancer treatments and passed away midway through the 10th Anniversary HSR cruise Oct 28-Nov 4. Her death was kept quiet until after the cruise was over. MARINE TOYS FOR TOTS RUN IN ROANOKE/SALEM by Anthony & Michele Martone, Starphotos of VA

What a great day for a ride! The unseasonably warm temperatures rising to mid and upper 60s coerced people to come out in force. Sport bikes, choppers, Harleys, and even classic cars came together for a worthy cause - the 24th annual local Toys for Tots run. This 24 mile run loops through Roanoke and Salem, VAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winding roads. Over 2000 bikes participated in the run, making it quite the sight to see. According to event coordinators, participation was more than double the projected number. Over $10,000 in cash was raised and enough toy donations to fill two 7 ton trucks manned by US Marines. A variety of motorcycle and riding clubs turned out to show their support, as well as individual riders from all over the state of Virginia and beyond. Congratulations to the event coordinators Robert Johnson, Sgt. Portis, the various HOG Chapters from CMA and the many volunteers. We look forward to working with all of you on future charity runs and events.

The 23rd East Coast Indoor Nationals is in the bag, as they say. Nearly 300 American rods, customs, muscle cars, antiques, and custom motorcycles along with a huge vendor area descended on the Cow Palace at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. The show was divided into two divisions, the “Show Division” for cars and bikes not seeing road time; and the “Street Division” for those that are driven. A total of $10,000 in cash plus awards was distributed to class winners. Best Show Bike award was presented Mark Irvin for his 2012 Custom Chopper ($500 prize winner) and Best Driven Bike award was presented to Keith Jones for his 2004 Boss Hoss ($250 prize winner). This show is held the first weekend of December every year and is attended by nearly 8,000 spectators. Rumor has it that in 2013, the total prize payout will be $12,000 and includes $1,000 for Best Show Bike and $500 for Best

Driven. Not bad for a show that gives its proceeds to the U. S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots. This year’s show raised $37,161 in cash and 1,500 toy donations. How awesome is that?? Handlebars: Make or Break the Bike?

The handlebars are very important part of your bike. The new bikes come with the one size fits all handlebars. We all know one size fits all translates to one size fits some and the rest, make do. If we all were the same height, same arm length and shoulder width, this would be fine. We are not. Now we all know handlebars do a few things. First, they are a major part of the look of your bike. You want them to flow with the design of the bike. There are road bars, ape hangers, drag bars, clip on and a lot of custom bars. You also want the handlebars to set at a good height so they’re easy to reach and comfortable. The way the handlebars set will affect your back, neck, wrist and even how your butt feels. If you’re fighting them, it can suck the fun out of the ride. Now when picking a new set of bars you have a few things to look at. You want to cover the gas tank so it doesn’t get marked up. Then loosen the bars up and when sitting on the bike see where you think you would like then. If it feels wrong, it most likely is wrong. They have to be up high enough to clear the tank and wide enough to not hit the tank when turning. If you raised the handlebars enough you will need to change cables and wiring that can get costly with Ape hangers. You will most likely need new gas and clutch cable, master cylinder front brake hose/line and control wires. DO NOT get brake fluid on the gas tank. You will not be a happy camper. You also may have to remove the gas tank to get to the wires in most bikes. This may also require you to change wires in the plug ends and sometimes remove plugins to get the wires inside the handle bars. When putting the bars back on, make sure they clear the tank and that the cables are long enough. You don’t want the bike revving up when you turn the bars. I have heard people saying that changing handlebars is real easy. I will take this time to say in a lot of cases it is a bit of work. The main things to remember is this is not a quick job and you want to make sure you have everything you need to do the job right. P.S. All companies do not measure their handle bars the same, so check their charts or call and ask. Have fun and safe riding.
