HAPPY NEW YEAR! FLBD wishes you and yours a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous 2014. We’ve already started planning our schedule and it’s going to be a fabulous year!

But now let’s talk about THE BIG ONE. You know what I’m talking about - the Timonium Motorcycle Show, Timonium, MD, February 7th, 8th and 9th. For full show details see the ad in this issue or visit www.cycleshow.net. First, if you don’t have your February edition of FLBD handy going into the show, be sure to find us in the SOUTH HALL to pick up your very own copy of this special KEEPSAKE ISSUE - trust me on this one! As for the FLBD crew, we’ll be there in a big way and we’ll be incorporating our readers in everything we do because, ultimately, we’re there to meet with you. We’ll be in our usual South Hall location with our own stage and bringing you talent, fun and more. The FLB TWO WHEEL WEDDING will take place on Friday evening, February 7th. The winners of our contest will be legally married (or renew their wedding vows) on the main stage during the show. In the Swap Meet Pavilion the FLB BIKER BUILD-OFF will commence and you can watch up close and personal as very talented custom bike builders bring their creations to life. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the first to complete their street-ready build and also to the winner of People’s Choice so be sure to vote for your favorite! In addition to our main attractions, we’ll also have the Sassy Girls dance team, spokes models, autograph and photo ops, custom bikes, impromptu interviews and more throughout the weekend. Come out for the fun and don’t forget to visit www.flbdelmarva. com to download your $5 OFF ADMISSION COUPON. You should also look for our videographers throughout the weekend. We’ve been asked by Pilgrim Productions, producers of the Discovery Channel’s American Choppers, to provide video of the show and the Biker Build-Off and we plan to show them how FLBD readers roll! So come on out! We’ll see you there! Finally, if you are interested in a commission sales position in a funfilled, all-things-motorcycle environment, please stop by the booth and introduce yourself. We will make time to speak with you. We are currently seeking sales representatives to fill positions in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia both part-time and full-time. If you don’t want to wait until the show, contact Walt at sales@ flbdelmarva.com and he’ll be happy to speak with you now. Don’t be shy!

Senior Moments

DAVID BROWN

Name: Age: 78 Location: Brookeville, MD

David Brown’s first motorcycle was a 1945 Harley called a 45/45. It was a used Civil Service bike and was painted that aluminum paint that was typically used back in those days and he repainted the 9-year-old bike with a fly sprayer. His next bike was a newer 1950 and after that he upgraded to a different bike every 4 or 5 years and varied among Harleys, Hondas and Triumphs. There was a gap of about 15 years when Dave’s interest switched from bikes to boats. But after exploring every river and waterway from New Jersey to the Carolinas and a few down to Florida, eventually his interest turned back to motorcycles and he embraced it enthusiastically. His favorite rides are anywhere “different” such as the Beartooth Pass, NE exit out of Yellowstone, Chief Joseph Highway (which is Wyoming Highway 296), any scenic mountain and/ or twisty roads like the Dragon’s Tail (which is only 11 miles and why he prefers the Chief Joseph Highway which is about 62 miles). His longest ride was just shy of 12,000 miles in 20 days when he rode round trip to Fairbanks and Denali, Alaska (which was “NOT” a direct route). On his first day riding, he left from Maryland, skirted Kansas City, MO, then rode due north into Manitoba, Canada, and then northwest up through Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and on to Fort Laird in the Northwest Territories. From there he traveled through the Yukon Province and, finally, Alaska. His return trip took him over the Ice Fields in British Columbia, down to Montana, on to Reno, NV, over the Utah salt flats and then he worked his way back to Maryland. “I rode in all 50 states including Hawaii’s four islands on rented bikes and also in every Canadian Province.” Dave is a member of the Montgomery, MD HOG Chapter (www.MCHOG. com) and enjoys participating in a variety of charity and awareness rides. He rides with his wife, Pam, as his passenger, and both enjoy traveling to scenic and tourist locations. Although they met in a night club during the mid-70s while Pam served in the Army, they are “newlyweds” of only 11 years. “So I’m a slow learner,” says Dave. “Or maybe it was because she was carrying a big gun when on duty!” She is no longer active duty but Pam still works for the Navy. Dave’s advice to new riders: Always watch the cages (cars and trucks) because they are your enemy. If they are coming from side streets watch their wheels, if they are turning that means they are looking past you and not at you. Take all necessary safety precautions to avoid anything that might interrupt your future riding ability!

THE 911 FOUNDATION Riding To Benefit Those Who Put Their Lives On The Line

by Jane Zimmerman

The 911 Foundation’s mission statement is simple: NEVER FORGET September 11, 2001. There is perhaps no one more passionate than LA George, an Associate Board Member of the 911 Foundation. “It was a terrible tragedy,” says George, “and we want to keep it alive in people’s minds.” The 911 Foundation Ride was formed to benefit first responders everywhere and assist emergency organizations with funds, materials, and equipment. George began riding dirt bikes in 1964 and, in the late 1960s, rode her first street bike that consisted of two wrecked bikes that had been melded together to form one strange contraption. It was never registered and there was no title, but George has fond memories of that special bike. In 2000, George purchased her first Harley Fatboy and by 2010 she was the owner of a red 2009 Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle Road King with 24kt gold leaf flames. She loved the Road King and wanted to keep it but became frustrated with having to depend on her husband to help her move it if she got in a corner. Craving more independence, George had the Road King triked at Leola Motortrike. She then engaged Jeff Nolt of Horst Signs to replicate the Harley gold leaf flames on the body of the trike. With that artwork, a show-stopper was born and George uses the attention the trike draws as an opportunity to promote the 911 Foundation Ride. George and her husband, Skip, actively canvass shows and events with her trike to raise awareness about the ride and the benefits of participating. “The 911 Foundation Ride has over 100 police working as escorts to all three crash sites” says George. The limit is 1,000 bikes per ride so each ride is several miles long and spans over three-days. Portions of I-95 are closed down as well as the Holland Tunnel to accommodate this fun, meaningful and educational ride. George explained that ride organizers set up staging areas where riders meet. “In Lancaster, PA, we meet at the Kmart shopping center on Fruitville Pike, at 7:30 a.m., on the Thursday before the ride. At 9 a.m. we leave for Harley-Davidson in Gettysburg who serves lunch to riders. We then travel to Somerset, PA, and stay the night. The ride officially begins in Somerset, PA on Friday morning, travels to the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and then on to Ground Zero in New York City.” George and Skip are currently organizing the 911 Foundation “Never Forget” 5K run and a 1 mile walk starting at the Worship Center in Leola, PA on May 10th, 2014. Profits will be donated to the Worship Center, the First Responders Training Center, and 911 Foundation. In 2014, the 911 Foundation motorcycle ride will take place on August 15th, 16th, and 17th. Questions concerning the ride or 5K run/1mile walk can be directed to LA George at om.lageorge@gmail.com or via telephone at (717) 371-8418. More information can also be found by visiting the official website at www.americas911foundation.org.

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director Mark your calendar! Maryland’s legislative session will begin January 8, 2014 and ABATE of Maryland’s first Monday night lobbying begins the following Monday, January 13th. Every Monday night for over 30 years, ABATE has lobbied in Annapolis for Maryland motorcyclists addressing any legislature that is motorcycle related. It may not always be about legislation ABATE is able to get passed. What ABATE prevents from passing is just as important. For instance, over the years some of the bills that (thankfully) did not make it through include flashing beacons on helmets, reflective vests, and prevention of child passengers. The bottom line is that ABATE is always vigilant to insure bills that negatively affect motorcyclists are investigated, addressed and negated. In 2013, ABATE’s legislative seminar was held in November and the Board of Directors discussed and voted on bills that it will address in the 2014 session. Some of the issues can be handled administratively. Those issues include tolls, road conditions, MVA drivers handbook and riding impaired and unlicensed drivers. We work closely with the SHA, MVA and Maryland State Police to address these issues. ABATE also sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists where we discuss and implement ideas concerning how to make Maryland a safe environment for motorcyclists. One of the big agenda items for 2014 is impaired riding.

9

ABATE of Maryland will make this a priority as well. ABATE of Maryland has been working for some time now to include more comprehensive motorcycle information in the MVA drivers handbook. There is currently more information on bicyclists than there is on motorcyclists and we find this unacceptable. We have made attempts to work administratively with the MVA but that has not proved productive. ABATE is committed to investigating and implementing different and better avenues in order to accomplish this goal and we have made this a priority. Legislatively we will again address the helmet issue since that is a priority for motorcyclists in our state. We will ask for the introduction of a helmet modification bill, the same as last year, with a $10,000 insurance requirement. We are looking closely at bills passed by other states that allow freedom of choice and we will use that information as our guideline. We will also continue to focus on motorcycle only check points. This has been a problem throughout the country and Maryland needs to be proactive in addressing this issue. To participate in ABATE’s fight for your rights, please meet with us on Monday evenings beginning January 13, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the ABATE state office in Annapolis. The address is 71 Franklin Street. For more information, visit www.abateofmd.org or contact me directly at (443) 822-2558.

WizeGuyz Newark • DE If you are reading this, I congratulate you on surviving the holidays. Through cold/hot/cold weather, shopping, tons of food and, most likely, a few family arguments, we all managed to make it to January. Happy New Year! There wasn’t too much riding going on but I made time to hunt down a new bar not far from home because I’m lazy and was told this place wasn’t bad. So I hiked over to WizeGuyz Sports Lounge & Grill in Newark, DE, right off of Rt. 896. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but I wasn’t expecting much. I was told it used to be an old diner. I walked in and there was a split. Off to the right were pool tables, but that section was closed. Why? I have no clue, but so much for shooting a few games. The left side lead me to a bar with a bunch of high top tables to choose from. An abundance of TVs decorated the walls and there was even a dart board (I have been shooting for a while so was glad to see it). The next thing I noticed was how cold it was. I swear it couldn’t have been more than 50° and half of the customers were still wearing their jackets. I kindly asked the waitress to pump up the heat and she was more than accommodating. I decided to partake in the $2 Miller Lite drafts on special at the time and glanced at the menu. It was your basic bar menu filled with wings, fries, burgers, and a few Italian offerings. I started with the obligatory chicken wings, which were okay, slightly over-cooked but the hot sauce made up for that. Next I took the waitress’ advice and ordered the Italian grinder with fries for $10.00. It seemed like a good deal - a 12 inch sub with a side of fries. I was wrong. First I’ll mention the fries which were hand cut but

luke warm by the time they hit my table. The part that really pissed me off was the sub. Yes, it was 12 inches, it had tomatoes, it had peppers, it had cheese, and it was warm. But where the Hell was the meat?!? My first bite was an end so I thought maybe I just hit a shallow spot. After my second and third bite proved meatless, I was angry. I opened the sandwich and was shocked to find 4 measly, thin slices of meat. Yes, you heard me right - four paper-thin slices! WTF?! Everyone knows that Italian subs are supposed to be crammed with meat and very little room for anything vegetable related. At least that’s how I always get them. So then the question was “what do I do?” I was sitting in a cold restaurant, in the middle of a dart game, drinking decent beer and holding a piss-poor example for an Italian sub. I had to finish my game and was starving so I ate the sub because I never send food back. No matter how many people tell me they will watch it or “things like that don’t happen here” I never send food back. It could be ice cold, raw (oh wait, I like it raw) over-cooked, or even completely wrong and I’ll just let the waitress know I’m not satisfied and either force it down or opt not to eat it. In this case, my hunger won out and I finished my dinner roll with a side of veggies. After my game, I asked for my check and told my waitress that I was happy that the heat was turned up but the sub left a lot to be desired. I didn’t make a scene or ask for my money back because, after all, I did eat it. Now as you all know I can usually find the good in any place and very rarely write a negative article, mostly because I believe that we are all human and stuff happens. However there is no excuse for a poorly filled sandwich. It should have been flowing with ham, salami (preferably two types) and I personally would like to see some prosciutto and capicola. The beer was cold and the staff was friendly so those are my good points for WizeGuyz. I may try the place again in the future and hope that my experience was simply a growing pain because the place is fairly new but it won’t be anytime soon. I say skip WizeGuyz Lounge in Newark, DE, until you hear back from me. If you have questions, comments or want to recommend a biker-friendly bar or restaurant, contact Jay@flbdelmarva.com. Until next time, remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

Wayne Lund was born and raised in a small North Dakota town where most of the residents were, like Wayne, descendants of settlers who immigrated into the area from Norway in the 1880s. That is where his proud Scandinavian heritage and interest in Vikings and Scandinavian folklore originated. In the 1970s, a relative traced the family history back twenty generations to 1370 to a time of adventurous explorers, able seamen and fierce fighters known as Vikings. The family history was published in a book around 1975 and a relative, Clarence Lund, designed a Viking emblem for the book’s cover. In 2005, Wayne’s son, Drew, was tattooed with that Lund family emblem and, shortly thereafter, Wayne had the emblem etched onto a plate on the back of his sissy bar. He continued to add Viking-themed artwork until the Vikings and Dragons Bike came to life.

NEW SCREAMIN’ EAGLE HIGH CAPACITY OIL PAN HOLDS MORE LUBE

RIBBED ALUMINUM PAN ADDS 1.5 QUARTS TO OIL CAPACITY AND KEEPS IT COOLER Keep a hot-rod Harley-Davidson engine running cooler with the new Screamin’ Eagle High Capacity Oil Pan. Great for a high-performance motor or for touring in extreme temperature conditions, this cast-aluminum oil pan holds 1.5 quarts more oil than the Original Equipment pan. Increased capacity means the oil cycles through the engine less frequently and remains in the pan longer. Cast-in internal baffles manage flow to the oil pickup and keep the hot oil exposed to the heat-conducting, ribbed-aluminum sump. An easy-access oil drain hole is located at the side of the oil pan. This kit includes the cast aluminum oil pan and pan gasket, and fits 2009-later Touring (except Trike) models.
