Grant still rides every day, as weather permits and logs 15000 - 20000 miles per year. He has ridden more than a million miles in his 67 years of riding. Grant is a US Army Korean Vet. He is an Aircraft Tech Mechanic and owned an aircraft maintenance shop for over 40 years. He and his wife, Janet, have lived in Richboro, PA for more than 46 years. They met at a roller skating rink and have been married for more than 56 years. When asked what advice he would offer to new riders, Grant says, “Go to class. Pay attention. Respect the bike or it will bite you.” FLBD salutes Grant for his military service, congratulates him on his 67 years as a rider and wishes him many rides to come!

I recently represented a client who had motorcycle coverage across the board or, if that isn’t affordable insurance through State Farm on his bike, autos then purchase the highest amount you can afford. So if necessary, call your agent, go on line, or call and a personal umbrella policy as well. your carrier directly, and add it to your policy today, He had great liability coverage, $250,000.00, on before its too late! It is cheap enough to add, along both his bike and auto policies BUT, for some with the stacking option, and if you ever need it, it reason, he apparently purchased less uninsured/ will be the best money you ever spent. underinsured coverage on his automobile policies and rejected this coverage all together on his As always, if upon reading this material you have any questions regarding this topic or any others, please motorcycle policy. feel free to contact me at LeeGaber@cycleattorney. I say apparently because State Farm needs to prove com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352). to me that he actually signed the required forms indicating he understood, and agreed to, these Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire changes in coverage. If they cannot produce the The one and only “Cycle Attorney” waivers, they must reform the policy to provide the coverage. I am still waiting. Those of you who have heard me speak at one of my lectures will remember my endorsing State Farm for motorcycle coverage as they are currently the only major insurance carrier that allows you to “stack” the uninsured and underinsured coverages from our bikes onto our automobiles, assuming you purchased the “stacking” option on both policies. In this case, had my client simply followed the law and purchased the allowable amount of UM/ UIM coverage, he would have had at least one million dollars of UM/UIM coverage to make a claim against after he recovered from the individual who caused the accident. How much he will actually have, remains to be seen. Bottom line – PULL OUT YOUR POLICY - right now, and make sure you have the same amount of UM/ UIM coverage as you purchased for bodily injury liability. I would suggest purchasing $100,000 in

BETSY ROSS BIKE... Before entering the US Air Force as an Aircraft Armament Systems Mechanic in 1980, Harry Waddle enjoyed riding and owned a few bikes during his youth. After a few wars, various missions, deployments, and excitement, Harry was medically retired in October, 2005. Shortly thereafter, he was selected for a civil service position at DavisMonthan AFB, in Tucson, Arizona. Although he purchased a handful of bikes during his time there, none seemed to capture the joy of the open road he remembered. Harry decided to purchase a new 2008 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Anniversary Edition motorcycle believing it would provide him with security as well as the power he craved. After logging 1000 miles, and before his first payment was due, Harry decided it wasn’t the bike for him. His new HD developed problems and as Harry struggled with them, he happened to stop by the Victory dealer in town. He test rode the Vision and by the time the test concluded, Harry was ready to trade his new HD for the Victory. He took the new Vision home and began his open road adventures - beginning with Sturgis. He departed on a Friday evening, stopped in Denver, CO for some sleep and a shower, and was back on the road the next morning. He was comfortable with his new ride and impressed with the gas mileage (50 MPG). Then the unthinkable happened. Harry struck a deer at 50 mph on a blind turn which resulted in a broken collarbone, shattered shoulder blade, 8 broken ribs and other internal injuries which were all caused by the deer striking Harry around the fairing. He went down on the right side. Surprisingly, Harry was able to bring the bike back up and bring it to a complete stop. Once he realized he was injured, Harry passed out, dropping the bike on its left side. Everyone believed the bike was totaled but all it required was a new right fuel cell and lower frame assembly. Once that was installed, it was up to Harry how to paint the bike. The existing panels were only available in base colors so he chose a custom paint design and asked Don from Cycle Skins to lend his talents to the project. Harry supports all veterans and provides escort services, participate in parades, welcome homes, honor flight escorts, and other various veteran events. He decided he wanted a Flag scheme. After a few months and numerous design issues the bike was finished. Harry then made contact with Big Joe at Kewl Metal to determine how to make this bike a one-of-a-kind. They added custom floor boards, highway boards, passenger boards, back-lit POW/MIA and Air Force covers on the sides, and he added a 21 inch front wheel that encompasses all the branches of the military. Harry named his bike “Betsy Ross” which now 19 boasts over 100,000 miles and has been ridden coast to coast.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REVEALS PROJECT LIVEWIRE™, THE FIRST ELECTRIC HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE H-D Invites Consumers to Ride, React and Shape the Future of this New Bike Innovation, meet heritage. Today, Harley-Davidson (NYSE:HOG) reveals Project LiveWire – the first Harley-Davidson® electric motorcycle. In keeping with the company’s customer-led product development approach, starting next week select consumers across the country will be able to ride and provide feedback on the bike, helping to shape the future of Harley-Davidson’s first-ever electric motorcycle. While not for sale, Project LiveWire is specifically designed for the purpose of getting insight into rider expectations of an electric Harley-Davidson motorcycle. “America at its best has always been about reinvention,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way. Project LiveWire is another exciting, customer-led moment in our history.” Spurred by this heritage, the Project LiveWire Experience invites customers to test ride, provide feedback and learn more about the story of the motorcycle. Even those who don’t yet ride will have the opportunity to feel the power of Project LiveWire through Jumpstart – a simulated riding experience. A 2014 U.S. tour – kicking off with a journey down Route 66 – will visit more than 30 Harley-Davidson dealerships now through the end of the year. In 2015, the Project LiveWire Experience will continue in the U.S. and expand into Canada and Europe. “This builds on many recent reinvention successes for Harley-Davidson.” said Levatich. “In just the last few years, we’ve broadened our reach to serve an increasingly diverse society, as well as reinvented our approach to product development and manufacturing. This has resulted in cutting-edge products like the recently launched Project Rushmore touring bikes, Harley-Davidson Street 500 and 750 models and this reveal of Project LiveWire.” An Innovative Approach to Advance the Possibilities of Personal Freedom This exciting new ride blends the company’s styling heritage with the latest technology to deliver a new expression of the signature HarleyDavidson look, sound and feel.

“Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar – not an electric car,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “It’s an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. Project LiveWire is a bold statement for us as a company and a brand.” The bike offers a visceral riding experience with tire-shredding acceleration and an unmistakable new sound. “The sound is a distinct part of the thrill,” said Richer. “Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. Project LiveWire’s unique sound was designed to differentiate it from internal combustion and other electric motorcycles on the market.” Longer term plans for retail availability of Project LiveWire will be influenced by feedback from riders along the Project Livewire Experience tour. “We offer a no excuses riding experience in everything we do and we are led by what our customers tell us matters most,” said Richer. “Because electric vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, we are excited to learn more from riders through the Project LiveWire Experience to fully understand the definition of success in this market as the technology continues to evolve.” Helping Preserve and Renew the Freedom to Ride for Generations As riding in the great outdoors is one of the best elements of motorcycling, sustainability remains a core strategic focus at HarleyDavidson. “Preserving the riding environment is important to all of us,” said Levatich. “Project LiveWire is just one element in our efforts to preserve and renew the freedom to ride for generations to come. As a company that has seen success for 111 years, we think in generational terms about our great riding environments for the next 111 years.” Fans can learn more about Project LiveWire, as well as specific dates and locations for Project LiveWire Experience stops at projectlivewire.com. Harley-Davidson also invites anyone who is interested in the possibilities of the future to follow and engage with the company on its social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director First, I would like to thank everyone who attended our 31st Annual State Party at the Fairgrounds in Cumberland, MD. We had a wonderful turnout! We’d also like to thank the ABATE officers and members who worked so hard to organize a great party as well as the various bands and entertainment who helped make this one of the best state parties we have had in years. Congratulations to Carol Pilkerton who won the new 2014 Street Glide. Finally, we’d like to thank our newest chapter, Mountain Chapter, for a job well done working the event, setting up, tearing down and for conducting a beautiful scenic ride on that Saturday morning. It couldn’t have been better and we couldn’t have done it without their support! If you missed this year’s party, be sure to attend in 2015 which promises to be bigger and better. MOTORCYCLE ONLY CHECKPOINTS and PROFILING - ABATE has had issues in the state of Maryland but we are working hard to prepare for the 2015 legislative session. We all need to unite and lobby strong in Annapolis to stop profiling in our state. If you are stopped at a motorcycle only checkpoint, ABATE needs to know. There is a Traffic Stop Form on ABATE’s website that you can download, complete and return to us. The information we gather from these forms will be used to prepare us for legislation.

It is imperative that we all complete these forms so ABATE can determine where the issues are and work with law enforcement and legislators to stop profiling. If you have questions or issues you can always call the state office and we will address your concerns. ABATE is proud to be working together with the Maryland Coalition of Clubs (COC) to insure Maryland is a safe state to ride your motorcycle. It is good to see clubs come together to resolve issues and plan initiatives that will unite us all. ABATE also sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists. This is an excellent platform to voice issues in the motorcycle community and ways to resolve them. We are presently working on how to successfully deter impaired riding and we recently updated the motorcycle section of the driver’s handbook. As you can see, ABATE is very busy. We work all year long for motorcyclists and we are ever-vigilant. We watch closely for anything that could adversely affect motorcyclists and take steps to resolve those issues. In order for us to do all these things, we need members. You do not have to do a thing except join if that is what you choose. Your $25 membership fee enables us to continue to represent you as a motorcyclist. Register today to become a proud member of ABATE at www.ABATEofMD.org. Thanks to all of you for everything you do for motorcyclists. Keep up the good work!

The Bridgeport Rib House • Bridgeport, PA July is here and it’s full-on riding season. I hope all of you have your bike ready to run, because there are plenty of events to attend and many scenic miles to explore and enjoy. I managed to go on a few great trips and found my way to a few good bars. In June, I headed to Bridgeport, PA for a great barbecue spot with Big Poppa and Miss Caroline to celebrate Father’s Day. The Bridgeport Rib House is a little bar tucked into a corner property and it just happens to have some of the greatest barbeque north of the Mason Dixon Line. We considered the large U-shaped bar but decided to be seated in the dining area and tossed back a few drinks. We looked over the menu but left the ordering to the old man (Big Poppa) - after all, he’s been frequenting the Rib House since the 90s - and he ordered the FULL FEAST. The FULL FEAST consists of beef ribs, barbeque chicken, pork ribs, and barbeque chicken breast, all slathered in barbecue sauce that is made on site. It also comes with sides and I’m not talking just any sides - sausage stuffing, cole slaw and, of course, baked beans were among those we ordered. I helped myself to a bit of everything. The tender beef ribs were cooked just right; not chewy and just enough juice to accent the barbeque sauce. My chicken was extremely moist and I really don’t think that I have had a better piece of chicken north of the Mason Dixon Line. I passed on the chicken breast because I was too busy devouring everything else but Miss Caroline declared it juicy and tender. The sausage stuffing was something I haven’t had but the awesome flavors meant that it didn’t last long on our table. Both Big Poppa and I made quick work of it. The beans had just the right amount of snap and were drenched in a savory sauce. I passed on the cole

slaw because, as we all know, I’m not a fan of leafy vegetables. After grazing for about an hour it was time to throw in the towel and pack up our left overs which meant a great lunch the next day. I can’t speak for the other sauces but the hot barbeque was good on ALL of the meats offered in our FULL FEAST. I’ll eventually make a trip back to try other flavors offered by the Rib House and hopefully it will be on one of the 4 out of 7 days they offer live music. The Bridgeport Rib House is definitely a great hide away place with great food and friendly staff, the top requirements I look at for a biker-friendly eatery. So if you get the opportunity to head north for a change, be sure to add the Bridgeport Rib House to your plans. The Bridgeport Rib House is located at 1049 Ford Street, Bridgeport, PA. For more information, visit their website at www.RibHouse.net. Until next time, remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

Everyday Heroes Meet Everyday Hero: John Beslanovitz

Submitted by Jane Zimmerman, Loyola Trikes

A

dedicated fireman and a true hero in an age where such honorifics are thrown around too easily, John Beslanovitz worked tirelessly at Ground Zero in New York after the attacks of September 11th, and his dedication to honoring fallen colleagues has never wavered in the years since. The high-stress work in the worst of conditions left the firefighter with a need to decompress and attempt to cope with the emotions left by witnessing all the suffering and carnage. Beslanovitz, a member of the Red Knights, built his trike to honor all who put their life on the line. He wants those who view it to remember the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on that fateful day of September 11, 2001, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending America’s freedom. The trike is a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic with a Motortrike conversion built by Leola Motortrike and airbrushed by Horst Signs.
