hoever said “time flies when you’re having fun” must have been referring to us – we can’t believe it’s July!! The entire Fast Lane Biker Delmarva staff has been spending every spare moment attending bike nights and events and meeting lots of awesome people. We are firmly convinced that no other group of people on this earth is more generous than bikers and we applaud you all. Each week we receive at least a dozen invitations to participate in events. Sometimes we hit two or three in a day, covering up to 600 miles. The weird part is that we love it! This issue is packed with rides and events that we covered and some we just couldn’t get to simply because we ran out of time. But we have an idea. We are officially “deputizing” each and every one of our readers to be FLBD correspondents. If you participate in a ride or event, send us your 300 word article (it doesn’t have to be Pulitzer Prize winner – we’ll fix it up) and at least ½ dozen photos to submissions@flbdelmarva.com and we’ll attempt to get it into the next available issue and even give you the “by line.” If you are involved in a charity event or belong to a registered 501(c)(3) organization, send us your event flyer and we’ll add it to the events page on our website FREE – that means no charge to you! Send your flyer to sales@flbdelmarva.com. If you would like us to participate in your event, send us an invite and we’ll see if we can make it happen. We love to meet as many of our readers as we can. Remember Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva is “Written By Bikers For Bikers,” so we want to feature as much information as we can about you, your friends, your neighbors, your passions and your lifestyle. We are also looking for LOCAL nominations for “Babe of the Month,” “Hot Cougar,” “Featured Bike Of The Month,” “Senior Moments,” Caption Contest photos and captions and, of course, Caroline’s online pet project, “Biker Beef” (hot guys featured online for the ladies). Caroline thinks us guys are wimps – I told her she hasn’t seen anything yet. So hit her up at caroline@flbdelmarva.com and tell her you have what it takes to be FLBD-Approved Biker Beef. She TRIPLE DOG DARES YOU! Soon you will be able to post your nominations online for all categories and even vote for your favorite. Keep checking us out at www.flbdelmarva. com.
We’re finalizing plans for Bike Week in Ocean City, MD and surrounding communities beginning September 15th thru 18th. We’ll be back at Dead Freddies On The Bay again for our 3rd Annual Biker Bash – “Party Like A Pirate” is our theme again this year. So come out for the vendors, custom bike builders, live music (Great Train Robbery will be back with us on Thursday/Saturday and Reckoning will be rocking us on Friday!) and contests all weekend long. Check our website often at www.flbdelmarva.com and we’ll update information as it becomes available. But mark your calendars now! You won’t want to miss the best Biker Bash in Ocean City, MD! ARRRRRR (that’s pirate for “Party Hearty”)!! Until next month, keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road.

SENIOR MOMENT
WE ARE YOUR one stop shop for motorcycle rider accessories
Name: Robert C. ‘Bobby’ Nichols on ‘Spirit of Liberty’ Age: 56 Location: Federalsburg, MD
Bobby Nichols was born and raised in Federalsburg, MD. He started out riding mini bikes in the late 60s and bought his first motorcycle, a Honda 350, when he was a teenager. After graduating from the Colonel Richardson High School in 1973, he enlisted in the Maryland Army National Guard. He married his high school sweetheart and they had two children together, April and Robert, Jr. Bobby retired from the Maryland Army National Guard in 1997 with 24 years of service (almost 10 years full time) but continued to work with UPS where he became employed in 1991. In 2006, Bobby purchased his first new bike, a Suzuki Boulevard C50. The following year he went to Myrtle Beach where he met Mike (Mountainman) and Shirley Lamborne who did some painting on his Suzuki and that was the start of a great friendship. In May, 2008, Bobby purchased a gray and silver 1982 Honda Goldwing Aspencade and, with the help of his friend Warren, began dismantling his new acquisition and prepping the tins for new paint. What he thought would be a few weeks turned into six months before Warren announced the tins were ready. Warran painted all the tins White Pearl. Bobby had already talked to Mike Lamborne about painting a patriotic theme on the Goldwing and in November, 2009, Bobby and Warren took all the tins out to Mike’s shop in West Virginia. The “Spirit of Liberty” tins were finally finished in March, 2010 but the bike wasn’t fully reassembled for another 3 months. Bobby added 27 red, white and blue LED light pods on the main body and windshield. Then came the white pearl powder coated rims and the windshield screening - a flag, a soaring eagle, the Vietnam Memorial, the Wall and a helicopter flying above – done by Bobby Deal at Sign Connection in Queen Anne, MD. “This is always a work in progress,” said Bobby.

ASK THE ATTORNEY
y the Clown Huff
By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire
1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com When a potential client first contacts me, after they describe how their accident occurred, I ask them about their insurance policy. The typical response I get is… “I have full coverage”! Confident that this means that they are fully covered for any loss suffered. Unfortunately, when I follow up with; • How much liability coverage do you have?; • Do you have Comprehensive and Collision coverage?; • Do you have medical coverage on your motorcycle policy? and most importantly; • Do you have uninsured/underinsured coverage on your policy and if so, in what amounts? Most clients are unable to answer these questions and often are extremely disappointed to learn that although they thought they had full protection, what they have is State minimum coverage, which provides little or no protection to them, contrary to what they may have been led to believe. I bring this up now, before we get too far into the season, because I want all of you to look and see what type of coverage you have, rather than relying upon your understanding that you may be “fully covered”. What most believe is “full coverage” and the reality of being fully covered, are worlds apart. Being “fully insured” means your insurance policy should provide not only liability coverage, but also collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured benefits and in some cases, medical coverage. I also want to clarify a prevailing myth; which is; if you are involved in an accident and it is the other persons fault, their insurance company will automatically pay for the damage to your bike and all of your medical bills. THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! No matter how the accident occurred, the other insurance company does not owe you a duty of care, as you are not their insured. Ultimately, if they agree that their customer is at fault, they will usually pay for the damage to your vehicle within a few weeks. However, they will not pay for your medical bills until the entire matter is resolved. Therefore, if you do not have health insurance or medical benefits on your policy, your bills will be outstanding and quickly become delinquent. This is the concept generally referred to as “no-fault”, which means that no matter who is at fault, we are all initially responsible for our own medical bills. I urge everyone to stop relying upon bad advice, or your own misunderstanding that your coverage is sufficient and take five minutes to examine your policy to make certain that you are truly “fully insured”. On another note, we recently attended Atlantic City Bike Week at the Atlantic City Convention Center on May 20-22 and Burlington Bike Night in Burlington, NJ on June 4th, and for the first time, we plan on attending the Freemansburg Motorcycle Hillclimb and Bike Show in Bethlehem, PA. Finally, the PA. Senate recently passed a bill that will allow for the sale of motorcycles on Sundays. Although not yet signed into law, it appears to have bipartisan support in the house and is likely to become law in the near future. I think this is welcome news to all of us who will appreciate being able to shop for a motorcycle on Sundays. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

BIKERS RALLY TO BENEFIT JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION The place to be on Saturday, June 11th, was the Buckeystown Pub in Buckeystown, Maryland where Wayne “Crabby Daddy” and Shelley Harris hosted the 2nd Annual Crabby Daddy’s JDRF Benefit Motorcycle Ride. Juvenile Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It strikes suddenly and, each year, over 15,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes - that’s 40 children every day. Just ask Shelley Harris.
At the age of two, Shelley was hit by a car and began having symptoms of diabetes almost immediately. Within a year, Shelley was diagnosed with Juvenile/ Type I Diabetes. Although her parents made sure she was as “normal” as any other kid, she still had to endure urine tests and give shots twice a day at a time when there were no disposable syringes, blood monitors, or insulin pumps – only glass syringes and needles that were used over and over again. They became dull and using them was painful. Mostly Shelley remembers the bad insulin reactions (low blood sugar) and being told she would probably not live as long as a “normal” person. That was 50 years ago. Today, as much as Shelley has tried to manage her blood sugar, she is now experiencing kidney disease, high blood pressure and retinopathy. She prays everyday that she will live long enough to see grandchildren. As many of you are aware, my daughter Leigh was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes when she was 8 years old. She lost her battle in June, 2010 at the age of 35. Observing Shelley and Wayne in the hot sun giving their all and trying to raise money to fund critical research and find a cure, left me awestruck. Last year, the Harris’ organized their first ride out of the Buckeystown Pub to Dale’s Place in Thurmont and back again. Their goal was to raise $500 – they raised $5,000. This year the goal was, once again, $500 – they raised almost $7,000. “Buckeystown Pub deserves the “host award” for the fine food, staff, and facility in Frederick County, Maryland. They always said “yes” to all that was asked. We would also like to thank our sponsors, volunteers, and participants. Without all of them, we could not do this. We’d also like to thank our two bands, Alkatraz and Poverty Ridge, who donated their time and talents.” Will there be a 3rd Annual Ride? The Harris’ say yes – and Fast Lane Biker Delmarva will be there too! If you are considering a charitable donation, please consider the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE A guy is at the Pearly Gates, hoping to be admitted, and St. Peter says to the guy, “I can’t see that you did anything really good in your life, but you never did anything bad either. I tell you what, if you can tell me one really good deed that you did, you’re in.” So the guy says, “Once I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang’s leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head but with hair all over his body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear. Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, ‘You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You’re all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!’” Impressed, St. Peter says, “Really? I can’t seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?” “Oh, about two minutes ago.” -Anita Imondi ☼☺☼☺☼☺☼☺☼☺☼☺☼ THE HEART SURGEON AND THE MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a motorcycle when he spotted a well known heart surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?” The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So, Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take valves out, fix ‘em, put ‘em back in and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over and whispered to the mechanic ... “Try doing it with the engine running!” -Anita Imondi 9

ANNUAL DICK GELLMAN’S MOTORCYCLE 11TH RIDE ACROSS MARYLAND ART
Over 1,000 bikes crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge headed for the Francis Scott Key Family Resort for the 11th Annual Ride Across Maryland weekend in Ocean City. The ride to various Maryland destinations raises money to fight breast cancer. Ride Across Maryland has donated over $2 million in eleven years. The three top teams for fundraising were Outback, the U.S. Navy Chiefs and Friends and MCV. “It’s the bikers. This is what they do, this is what they love doing, raising money for worthwhile causes. It’s not us, it’s the bikers, they do all the hard work,” said Gelfman. Team Outback, made up of customers who frequent the Glen Burnie Outback Steakhouse, was 168 strong and raised over $300,000 for the cause. The Navy Chiefs and Friends Team, a worldwide fraternity brotherhood and sisterhood of both active duty and retired military, were 62 strong and have raised over $47,000. The MCV team, new to the ride this year, was 40 strong and raised more than $31,000. The Gelfman Ride is so successful that it is now a grantgiving organization. “We have grown very fast. It’s been 10 years, but we’ve given away over $2 million. Because of that success, we are seeking organizations involved in the fight against breast cancer and in need of funding,” said Gelfman. “We want organizations, individuals, small groups, large groups, hospitals - if you need funding contact the Ride Across Maryland. We are considering all requests for grants.”

DATING IN THE FAST LANE A View From The Curb By Terri Faust
Don’t panic folks, this story’s not about dating – I’ll get back to those adventures next month. This month I want to share with you something that happened to me last week that has restored my faith in MANkind (so, in a sense, it IS about relationship of one kind or another). I took a ride to the shore last week, on a virtually traffic-free Route 1. The ride to the beach was a pleasure, stopping for lunch in Bethany before heading back. Coming through Rehoboth, my clutch went out and I was stranded in a parking lot for two hours, waiting for a friend to arrive with a trailer. Let me say first of all, thank goodness for friends who drop everything and go out of their way to help you. I only hope I have the opportunity to return the favor one day, or “pay it forward” to someone else who’s broken down. While I sat in the shade waiting to be rescued, a guy on a Harley pulled into the lot, and rolled up to where I was sitting on the curb. He spotted me earlier, sitting in the same spot and wanted to be sure I was okay. We chatted for a bit about Harley’s vs. Suzukis and I took the typical ribbing about rice burners. It turned out the guy reads Fast Lane Biker Delmarva, but didn’t realize he was talking to the March Hot Cougar. Although at that point I was truly, and completely HOT. It was 100 degrees that day and not much cooler in the shade. Having someone stop and keep me company out of the kindness of their heart really left an impression on me. Shortly after he pulled away another biker stopped to inquire if I was safe and asked if
FA S T L A N E B I K E R
he could help in any way. About an hour later my buddy arrived and we got the Intruder up on the trailer. Now to figure out where to take it for repairs! I just bought this bike last month, and hadn’t anticipated having any work done on it for quite awhile. I was dreading the phone call to the local bike shop. As I suspected they would, the service manager insisted I needed a new clutch. I knew this wasn’t the case because the previous owner had just rebuilt the clutch but the big-name dealership wouldn’t listen to me and I felt that churning start in my stomach - the sick feeling that says “I’m about to get screwed” and not in a good way. Then I remembered I’d met Derek Turner of Turner Tech at The Drunk Monkey bike night in Elkton the previous month and while I hadn’t had any work done yet on the bike, I was impressed by Derek’s knowledge and experience with all makes of bikes. When I got him on the phone, he listened to the “symptoms” and told us to bring the bike to his shop and he’d get it fixed right on the spot. We headed to Bear, DE and Derek bled the clutch line, checked the linkage and true to his word, had me back on the road in less than an hour. I left his shop a little smarter than when I arrived (just a little) and I rode home with my faith in mankind restored. Not only were other bikers willing to stop and see if a total stranger was safe and needed help, but in the process I also found an amazing mechanic who knows his stuff and understands the value of great customer service. The thought of breaking down is something all bikers dread, especially if you ride alone most of the time like I do. But despite breaking down, and sitting in the sweltering heat for a few hours, I feel very fortunate that I have good friends who came to my rescue, good “fellowship” among other bikers, and honest, caring people who believe in treating others with fairness & integrity.

RIDE TO EAT . EAT TO RIDE BULL’S EYE SALOON & RESTAURANT . WILMINGTON, DE By Jay Kuch, Mystery Food Critique
“Is it hot enough for you?” I hate that question. I work in a garage all day and if one more person asks me if it’s hot enough while working on their car I’m going to snap. YES! It’s freakin’ hot! Can’t you see the sweat pouring off my face?!!? Anyway, on one of the nicer summer/spring days where the weather is perfect for riding, I found myself in need of beverage. After taking the time to get some riding in, I found myself at the Bull’s Eye Saloon and Restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware – a perfect slice of heaven right off Kirkwood Highway. I pulled into the parking lot and entered the bar to find a number of people enjoying good food, good beer and good music. The front of the establishment is a cozy dining area. Down a narrow hallway you’ll be greeted by a man-sized bar, full of your favorite poisons. Because I happened to arrive while the band was playing, I opted to sit in the dining room. I was greeted by a most friendly waitress whose name, as usual, escapes me – blame it on the Crown I consumed or because I’m a man with an attention span just slightly higher than that of a goldfish. Or maybe it was because I was into the menu. You’ll find the typical bar fare as well as an interesting choice of sandwiches. Bull’s Eye is known for their sliced beef sandwiches and it is offered as a special with fries and a drink for $7. As usual, I started with a pile of hot wings. It’s really hard to mess up wings but this place had cooked their wings to perfection. Crispy skin, juicy meat and soaked in a spicy hot sauce. As for the main course I selected “the Kirkwood.” The beef was sliced to perfection and piled high on a tasty pretzel roll with provolone cheese, tomatoes (I’m eating my vegetables!) and spicy mustard – it was a great creation. There are several different sandwich combinations I’d like to try to a few more trips to the Bull’s Eye will be in my future. I relaxed at my table, enjoyed another drink while listing to the music being played out back. It was busy but the staff was very attentive. It has a great neighborhood bar feel and if you have the chance you should definitely check it out. They have great food and live entertainment each Friday and Saturday. The Bull’s Eye Saloon and Restaurant is located at 3734 Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington, Delaware. You can view their menu online at www.bullseyesaloon.com. Until next time, remember, it IS hot enough and it’s just another day in paradise. 13

24TH ANNUAL ROLLING THUNDER Not even scorching heat could derail the mission of the 24th Annual Rolling Thunder demonstration over Memorial Day weekend in Washington, DC. Thousands of motorcycles roared through the spectator-lined streets of our nation’s capitol in an extraordinary and emotional demonstration with a united goal - awareness. Rolling Thunder, Inc. is a non-profit organization with approximately 100 chartered chapters throughout the United States. Its members speak for those who aren’t here to speak on their own behalf and for those who are here but are often lost in a system of governmental BS that sometimes blurs the clear vision of what is right. The folks at Rolling Thunder fight for issues such as locating and returning live POWs/MIAs, and the promotion of House Resolution 111 which calls for the investigation and resolve of missing U.S. personnel from WWII, Cold War, Korean conflict, Vietnam conflict, Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. They fight for the rights of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the prevention of benefit freezes. Rolling Thunder Charities, Inc. provides assistance to Veterans and families of servicemen and women in need of everyday necessities such as food, utilities and auto repairs. Joining the demonstration were speakers the likes of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs’ Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, former USS Cole Commander Kirk Koppold. Musical guests include longtime supporter Nancy Sinatra, country singer Gordon Painter, the Loch Rannoch Pipes & Drums Band, singer Kelly Trudell, Southern Fried Musicians and 4TROOPS, a group of singers/young veterans who have chosen song as their way to honor fellow servicemen and women. Sponsors for this year’s event included corporate giants Aetna and Humana Veterans Healthcare Services. Fast Lane Biker Delmarva would like to publicly thank National Executive Director Artie Muller, National Media Person Nancy Regg and the rest of the Rolling Thunder staff and its many members for their gracious hospitality and the wealth of information and professionalism offered to us. We are all profoundly grateful for their unwavering, tireless quest to do right by each member of our military, both past and present. SALUTING A HERO
He’s been performing one of the most intense and heroic acts in our nation’s capital since 2002 yet most of us can’t recall his name or have ever seen his face. We’re talking about Retired Marine Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers who has stood at his post, saluting, non-stop, for the duration of Rolling Thunder. For more than three hours, Chambers stands straight-shouldered at attention and gives each rider the “welcome home” they may not have gotten. What started as a spontaneous “thank you” nine years ago is now his moral obligation. If that doesn’t move you – this year, Chambers performed this selfless act with a broken wrist. Fast Lane Biker salutes YOU, Tim Chambers.
SARAH PALIN AT ROLLING THUNDER
“Did she or didn’t she?” seemed to be the question of the week after Sarah Palin’s unannounced participation at Rolling Thunder. Many Rolling Thunder supporters felt she took advantage of a captive audience for personal and/or political reasons. Fast Lane Biker Delmarva decided to go directly to the folks at Rolling Thunder for the official statement and here it is: “Sarah Palin was invited to participate in our annual demonstration from the Pentagon, Sunday by a member without the authority. She joined the ranks of many other prominent public figures Rolling Thunder has invited in the past, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff head General Richard Myers, actress Connie Stevens, actor Larry Hagman, singer Nancy Sinatra, Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Righteous Brothers’ singer Bill Medley, and this year, former NFL player Ruben Brown. Ms. Palin was gracious and spoke to all the Wounded Warriors, the Gold Star Mothers, Rolling Thunder members and participants. The important focus for Rolling Thunder was our core mission to hold the government accountable for the POWs and MIAs left behind from all wars, and our efforts on behalf of veterans and their families. In the past year Rolling Thunder Charities helped veterans, our troops and their families with everything from housing, groceries, heat and car repair expenses spending $230,000. 97% of what we raise goes right back to help veterans. That’s what’s important to us and that’s what we hope people—and the media—will focus on as we approach our 25th anniversary in 2012.” To quote Forrest Gump – “That’s all I have to say about that.” 29

THE RONIN KNIGHTS
The Ronin Knights are a family-oriented riding club out of the Delaware Budokan, or House of the Warriors, in Selbyville, Delaware. Since 1980, this unique riding club, composed of martial artists (several members have been training and riding together for 30 years) train, ride, travel, camp and cruise the Delmarva region. They became an official club in 2000. Each year, the Ronin Knights conduct an annual vacation run. This year’s chosen location is Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. For five days, they will visit the battlefield and ride the nearby sweepers and mountain curves. Because 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, there are many area events scheduled and the Ronin Knights will take in as much as possible. The 2010 annual vacation destination was Kittyhawk, North Carolina to visit the museums and exhibits of the Civil War and the Wright Brothers. What, exactly, is a Ronin Knight? Ronin, or “wave men,” were masterless Samurai who became unemployed. This was not a favorable position for a Ronin Knight and their fate was cast upon the “waves and the winds” leaving them to travel freely, polish their skills, and live as men according to their own code - similar to the philosophy of some of today’s hard-core bikers. Many Ronin Knights became mercenaries, merchants, farmers, law enforcement officers, bodyguards and martial arts instructors. Some were among the best and most famous swordsmen in Japan, like Miyamoto Musashi. Knights in Europe, like the Samurai Warriors, symbolize loyalty, honor and martial skills. The shield design of the Ronin Knight’s patch comes from the founder’s name, which when translated means “bearer of the shield.” As martial artists, the members train in karate, tae kwon do, aikijutsu, (projections and immobilizations), kyudo (archery), kenjutsu (swordsmanship), and Tai Chi. The Delaware Budokan is becoming well-known nationally and internationally in part due to the club’s president, Phil Scudieri. Knights President Phil “Blade” Scudieri, Vice President Celinda ”Star Dragon” Ellsworth and Road Captain Walter “Dr. Who” Orth will be doing a demonstration for the All Japan Budo Federation National Governing Board. The Imperial House sanctions this group for the preservation of the Classical Martial Arts
FA S T L A N E B I K E R
of Japan. The demonstration will be held during their 20th reunion in the Hall of Martial Virtue, or Butokuden, the oldest and most famous training hall in Kyoto, Japan. As motorcycle riders in the community, the Ronin Knights support local MCs and participate in charity rides and events when possible. Several are also long time members of ABATE. TURNER TECH
A Service Department On Wheels by Terri Faust
What biker doesn’t dread the thought of breaking down, calling for a roll-back and dealing with big-shop mechanics who inevitably try to sell you services you don’t need and parts that are exorbitantly priced? Before you call that shop, be aware that there is an option. You may have seen Turner Tech’s mobile unit set up at seminars, bike shows, club meetings and benefit functions providing on-site sales and services. What you probably don’t know is the depth of service and experience you get when you hand your ride over to their highly-skilled team. Turner Tech’s focus is on providing the highest level of customer service to owners of ALL makes and models, offering turn-around times the big shops can’t compete with, at rates they can’t touch. This shop on wheels offers onsite oil changes, brake work, tire mounting and balancing and much more. They offer same-day turn around in most cases (exceptions are parts that need to be special ordered). Then there is Turner Tech’s owner, Derek Turner, an avid biker who has been involved in drag racing, road racing and motocross for many years. Bikes are not just a “hobby” to Derek, they’re a way of life. What began as an opportunity to work at a friend’s shop while he was still in high school studying to be a diesel mechanic on his way to becoming a Marine, lead
to key roles in establishing and growing the service departments for some of the biggest dealerships in Delaware and Pennsylvania - Dover Cycles, L & D Suzuki, Honda East and, Planet Honda. In 2009, Derek noticed a change that emphasized quantity vs. quality. Realizing a key component was missing – true customer service - doing right by the customer by educating them about their choices, by refusing to “up sell” or perform work that isn’t necessary, Derek decided to branch out on his own and start a mobile repair service. His 30 years of experience as a factory trained mechanic means Derek is knowledgeable on every type of bike, and has achieved the highest level of certification given to Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Triumph & Polaris mechanics. A large segment of his customers are Harley owners who appreciate the quality of work at rates the dealerships can’t match. That “old school” philosophy is one that people appreciate and value and the reason Turner Tech’s business has experienced tremendous growth since it first began operations in 2009. Their business is 95% referrals, and they’ve added a second vehicle to their fleet to keep up with growing demand. When possible, Derek recommends that customers bring their bike to his shop, to avoid the $85 tow charge that’s associated with having his mobile unit come to you. His hourly rate is $60 ($70 if paying by credit card). To request a service call (24-7), make an appointment, or to arrange for the mobile unit to be at your biker function/event, please call 302-222-7673.

A handy item to have is a clear, threaded plug to power range from 11.5:1 to 13.5:1, with theoretical optimum insert into this hole to prevent oil from spurting out while making the figures being 12.5:1 at peak torque and 12.8:1 at peak horseadjustment with the engine running. This is done using an inductive power. type, strobe timing light. The light is connected to both ground and To further complicate the situation, at differing points of enbattery positive terminals and the inductive clamp placed around gine operation, different mixture ratios are required. For exthe front cylinder spark plug wire. ample, due to the lower port velocities at idle, a richer mixture A helpful trick is to rotate the engine (by the rear wheel of about 12.25:1 is necessary. During a steady state throttle in 4th gear or by carefully using the starter motor with the ignition condition (constant load at a given RPM), the mixture requiredisabled) so the timing marks are visible in this window. The factory ment leans out to about 13.4:1. marks indicate front cylinder TDC, front cylinder full advance setting Transient requirements are different again. Hard acceleration when the and rear cylinder full advance setting. Wipe all oil off of the crank wheel surface and highlight the timing marks with white paint using a small, fine brush. This makes the throttle is opened rapidly causes an increase in manifold pressure, which demands additional fuel to prevent backfiring, misfires or a stall. The ratio required during this marks much easier to see when performing the adjustment. The ignition timing is adjusted by moving the breaker plate located under condition can be as rich as 12.7:1 at full operating temperature or richer yet on a cold the cam cone cover. Slightly loosen the two hold down screws and the plate will be engine. A good tuning objective is to shoot for a mixture range between 12.5:1 able to rotate. Note the position of the lines on the plate. With the engine running and up to temperature, set the idle speed to about 1300-1500 RPM and note the position to 13.2:1 over the ENTIRE RPM bandwidth. This will result in a basically flat fuel of the front cylinder timing advance mark. It should be centered in the inspection curve, with maximum power available at all points. This can be a very difficult goal hole. If not, slightly move the breaker plate one way to see if the mark comes into to achieve, as the limitations of many carburetor designs don’t allow for sufficient position or moves further away. Based on this result, make the appropriate adjust- adjustment latitude over such a broad range. Depending on the specific carburetor, ment of the plate, then tighten it down. This procedure will get the ignition timing set there may be modifications available that provide more adjustable metering circuits to factory spec and will be our starting point for fine tuning later on. Mark the breaker and greater tuning options. Next month, we’ll discuss some specific carburetor designs, their adjustplate to show the new setting or take note of it for reference. Now that the ignition timing is close, we need to deal with the carburetor. ments and possible modifications to further our performance tuning goals. Till next month...
