ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

Recently, ABATE of Delaware was informed by way of Social Media that a fellow biker was ticketed after an accident for “riding a motorcycle during inclement hazardous weather that resulted in an accident.” I found out about this a full week after the incident and a day before the court date. No one can help in that short amount of time. Fortunately, the charges were dismissed and all is good. In light of this incident I thought it best to provide my thoughts on what you should do if you are stopped or ticketed after a traffic stop for questionable reasons. 1. Try to record the entire event either via video or audio. • Court case after court case has been fought and won over this issue. Just be aware of the laws in your state. 2. Be respectful. • Yes, sir and no, sir will get you further than derogatory remarks and attitudes. Although respect is a twoway street, you should keep your composure even if the officer you are dealing with seems arrogant.

tioning MUST stop at that point (see #3 above). • If the encounter concludes with a citation issued, make sure you have the officer’s name, badge number and agency. • If it’s a valid ticket (i.e., if the posted speed limit is 45 mph and you are busted at 60 mph, it is a clean ticket), suck it up and pay your fine. • If the ticket is questionable, CONTACT ABATE OF DELAWARE IMMEDIATELY with ALL of the facts. We can provide advice and direction should you decide to fight back. However, we can do nothing if we don’t know about it. For more information concerning ABATE of Delaware and what we do to protect the rights of all motorcyclists, visit www.abateofde.com.

3. When being questioned respond with “yes” or “no.” • An officer might try to engage you in comfortable conversation. Don’t fall for it! 4. Never consent to a search. • You should always, ALWAYS, elect to wait for a search warrant. Even if you have nothing to hide, it’s the law, so make law enforcement follow that law. • Be advised that you may end up in handcuffs over this. If you are arrested, ASK FOR A LAWYER. Ques-

13th Annual Miles For Military Bike Run by Linnea Cavallo, iHeartMedia-DE

iHeartMedia of Delaware and iHeartMedia of Salisbury, Md., teamed up June 10 for the 13th annual Miles for Military bike run to benefit the USO Delaware and Operation We Care, helping to raise nearly $10,000 for USO Delaware. Nearly 400 bikes, in conjunction with 94.7 WDSD, 92.9 TOM-FM, 1450WILM, 1410WDOV and Fox Sports 1290, raised $9,573. The Salisbury team raised $3,040 for Operation We Care. “Funding helps support all programs and services that USO Delaware provides to service members and their families,” said Center Operations & Program Manager for the USO Yolanda Bottorf. “Programs vary from morale boosting events like movies on the lawn to deployment, welcome homes and much more.” The event began more than a decade ago by a group of iHeartMedia employees brainstorming about how they can give back to American troops overseas. “They sacrifice so much for us on a daily basis, we wanted to find a way to show our appreciation,” said 92.9 TOM-FM’s Kathryn Alt. The group created Miles for Minutes in 2004, a bike run to collect phone cards for troops to be able to call home to their loved ones while stationed overseas. When phone cards became obsolete, the team changed the name to Miles for Military. The team partnered with the USO

FAST LANE BIKER

Delaware, which provides a touch of home to more than 75,000 service members and military families annually who pass through USO Delaware Centers. With only three full-time staff members, the center is run by 180 volunteers. Along with making families feel as though they have a home away from home, the USO Delaware coordinates and hosts all families of those service members that pass away overseas. “Part of our mission is being the solemn one of assisting the families of the fallen and the honor guards that come to support the dignified transfers,” said Bruce Kmiec, director of USO Delaware. “It matters a great deal to have this large ride in support

of USO DE.” The event also was made possible by the support of motorcycle communities in Delaware and in surrounding communities. “This is one of the events I know everyone in the state knows about and brings the entire three counties together for a day,” Kmiec said. The Delaware State Police, Dover Police Department and New Castle County Police escorted the bikes from the Delaware Army National Guard in New Castle to the Air Mobility Command Museum (AMC Museum) in Dover. At the AMC Museum, musical entertainment and a catered lunch along with a silent auction and 50-50 raffle was provided. All proceeds went directly to the USO Delaware. iHeartMedia, USO Delaware and Operation We Care will team up again in June 2018 for the 14th annual Miles for Military. Pre-registration begins in May 2018 at WDSD.com. Registration is $20 for bike and rider and $10 for each additional rider. 6

Good Motorcycle Morning! Let me tell you about a road. A road that seems to find me almost every time I set out on a long-haul motorcycle trip. A road that claimed 4 lives last year and sent hundreds of others off the side of the mountain and to the Tree of Shame. A road that, even if you do the speed limit, throws curves at you every 4 seconds for 19 minutes. This road is the Dragon, The Tail of The Dragon, US-129 near Robbinsville, NC and it’s one of the greatest moto roads out there. It is great not for its scenery, or scenic pull offs. No. This motorcycle Mecca in the North Carolina/Tennessee mountains can be summed up in its ever-preset slogan: 318 curves in 11 miles. Sure, there’s beautiful scenery, you just don’t dare to take the time to look at it. And yes, there are a few non-scenic pull offs that can offer you a short break from the stress of this road, but man o’ man, I LOVE THIS ROAD. I think I love this road because it’s the ever-great equalizer. $20,000 of chrome doesn’t matter (and you can kiss your foot pegs goodbye). Your $2000 leather race suit doesn’t matter. Plenty of folks will tell you that 20+ years of riding experience doesn’t matter. Only your true skill seems to matter. 250ccs beat 1000ccs, dirt bikes power past Supersports, Goldwings smoke Fat Boys, and a pickup truck once held the all-time speed record. It’s all about the driver, not what he’s driving. Sure, there are other great roads out there. But where else can a Harley guy and a Volkswagen guy become friends because they both survived the dragon? Where else can you lay down your bike, barely avoid sliding off the mountain, not die, and then be proud that part of your bike is on the Tree of Shame? Where else can a 50cc scooter get respect from a 1800cc crotch rocket? Nowhere else, only at the dragon. Now don’t get me wrong. The dragon is not a life or death decision. Only speed demons (like me), take their life in their own hands. The dragon can be a slightly less than stressful drive at proper speeds. Heck, you can do the curvy Moonshiner 28, the awesome Tail of the Dragon, and the beautiful Cherohala Skyway all in the same day. That said, the Tail of the Dragon is one of those places I just can’t get enough of and it will be on my agenda anytime I wander within 100 miles of the place. I hope to see you there one day! Shrimp & Avacado Zesty Pasta Salad with

Cilantro Lime Dressing

Prep Time: 15 mins. • Cook Time: 10 minutes Ready In: 25 mins. • Yield : 4 Servings

This is a perfect summer dish that can be served as a side dish or a light summer lunch/dinner on hot days. Although, it is complex in flavor, the ingredients blend together deliciously. The sweet mango compliments well with the zesty, bitter lime and cilantro flavor, while the red onion provides a crunch, color and a relatively mild flavor. I added a small amount of jalapeno which provides a very mild heat and another texture component. If you want to make this dish even lighter, leave out the pasta and eat it all in a lettuce wrap for a low carb option.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Using an immersion blender, in a small mixing bowl combine ingredients for dressing. If you do not have an immersion blender a food processor will work just as well. Refrigerate. 2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and stir in pasta shells. Reduce to medium to medium-high heat. Cook until tender, approximately 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat, drain and rinse with cold water to help cool pasta. Transfer to a large bowl. 3. Add shrimp, cubed mango, avocado, red onion, jalapeno, lime zest and cilantro to bowl with pasta and toss all together. Add dressing to dish and mix thoroughly. Add additional salt to taste if needed.

Social Media

BILL KNIEGGE LOCATION: WAXHAW, NC (AKA, CHARLOTTE) AGE: 73

After being exposed to AMA Dirt Track Racing at the Scott County Fairgrounds in Davenport, IA at the age of 12, a young Bill Kniegge knew he had to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Then came Junior High School where he borrowed a mini-bike with a lawn mower engine. Bill was hooked. When an uncle came to visit on a BMW and gave Bill a ride to remember, Bill set about conning his dad into buying a Whizzer Sportsman - a very cool motor bike that had no pedals but real foot rests. Bill rode the wheels off that bike until he got caught taking his dad’s ’55 Chevy Bel Air V8 out joy-riding - his beloved Whizzer was gone. It wasn’t until Bill was serving in the US Army that he found a way to buy a real motorcycle. He purchased a Suzuki X6 Hustler. “What a hot rod that was back in 1966,” says Bill. “That bike stayed with me for another 4 years until I was introduced to off-road riding in Colorado on an CT1 Yamaha.” Life was good for Bill, especially after acquiring a 250 Husqvarna 250 WR for trail riding which, according to Bill, was serious stuff in Colorado. He took his CT1 to “observed trials” in the mountains outside of Denver. “I got humiliated real fast,” says Bill. But he loved what he saw and for the next 15 years, his rides comprised of trials, trail riding and just a little street riding. In 1974, his neighbor purchased a BMW that looked like a pumpkin. That R90S Daytona Orange made Bill love the road but he continued to keep up in trials and off-road until he went to work in San Diego. The BMW bikes loved the mountains outside San Diego. Bill also owned Triumphs, Nortons, even a Kawasaki KZ 1000 which he thinks may have been the scariest bike of all but he had a lot of fun riding it. In 1991, he saw the newest BMW R100 GS. “That’s one ugly motorcycle,” thought Bill. But he bought one anyway and over the next 15 years he had at least one BMW GS in the garage because he wanted a great bike to ride on the “bad roads” which is what he used to call bumpy back roads. In 2007, Bill moved to Charlotte, NC, and purchased a Cagiva Gran Canyon and a Classic /6 BMW (Old N Fast). Bill loved the motorcycles and the motorcycle industry so much that he decided to launch a tour business in 2008. Unfortunately, during the recession of late 2008-2012, business suffered as people were reluctant to take expensive vacations and especially motorcycle tours. But Bill’s love of riding never faltered and in 2013 he expanded his tours to Italy. He enjoys working in the motorcycle industry and gets a thrill out of taking less-suspecting tour guests on an adventure they often say they will never forget - hopefully for good reasons! As a tour operator, Bill’s goal, which is often exceeded, is to deliver spectacular roads, over-the-top hospitality, and comradery that few ever expect.

Even at the age of 73, Bill still gets excited when the weather breaks so he can ride to no place in particular. He fondly remembers the joy of waking up in Borrego Springs, CA (Anza Borrego Desert) before his move to NC and heading out for coffee - 61 twisty miles away, 5000 ft. of altitude, and only 2 rolling stop signs! “It’s difficult to explain to people that haven’t experienced the excitement just what that excitement is. Even at 73 years old, motorcycles make my life worth living.” Besides motorcycles, Bill has another love in his life. He and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 30 years. He also loves his country and proudly served in the U.S. Army (1965-1967). Are you ready to go on a tour with Bill? June has been a very special month for me. I was presented with the opportunity to attend several fun events that also provide important and necessary support for some very worthwhile causes. On June 10, 2017, I had the honor and pleasure of attending the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Gala as a sponsor/donor of the campaign for Missy Coligan, who was named LLS Woman of the Year. Approx. 120k was raised for the cause. The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. LLS is the voice for all blood cancer patients and they work to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. On June 11, 2017, I attended the 18th Annual C.O.P.S. Ride that I also sponsor and support. The ride was hosted at the FOP in Upper Marlboro in Prince George County and had starting meet-ups at 7 different Harley-Davidson dealerships, drawing hundreds of registrant riders. The mission of the C.O.P.S. Ride is: Rebuilding shattered lives of survivors and co-workers affected by line of duty deaths through partnerships with law enforcement and the community. Funds are used to assist families of fallen officers. A hard fact is that nationwide,135 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016 alone. I was particularly impressed by Sue Nickerson who runs the event. Tragically, Sue lost her son, Officer Michael Nickerson, whose end-of-watch is 2-3-2001. Her strength and commitment to others who face similar tragedies is inspiring. As a sponsor and supporter, I wish to convey my sincere gratitude to those who support these annual events and to those who make these events a success. For more information on how you can become a supporter, visit: LLS at http://www.lls.org • C.O.P.S. at http://mdcops.org

Celebrating all women who ride regardless of age or their ride of choice.

Katie Durham Pasadena MD • Age: 29 Katie Durham is a newer rider having started only 3 years ago while stationed in Savannah, GA. Although she always had “the itch,” Katie didn’t grow up around bikes so didn’t really have access. She is an adventure-seeker whether it’s jumping out of planes, traveling, or running races. Katie is active military and has spent the last 7 years in the US Army. So what finally led Katie to ride? When Katie was 26, she went through a rough patch. It seemed life was handing her a bunch of lemons and she was determined to find a way to make lemonade. She needed to take control. She thought about the one thing she had pushed aside all her life. Katie hopped on her first bike and never looked back. Like many riders, she found that riding cleared her mind, empowered her, and introduced her to people she now calls friends. “The common bond we shared was the love for the freedom that riding provides,” says Katie. “Nothing makes me feel more alive than cruising on two wheels to a new destination. When I ride, all cares and worries take a back burner. I also ride to inspire other women to do the same; to take risks and realize they are stronger than they know and if they want something, to go out and get it.” Katie’s first bike was a 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster 883. After Indian Motorcycles opened a store in Savannah, she spotted a 2016 Indian Scout Sixty and fell in love with it. She plans to ride (and customize) her Scout for many years to come. Katie enjoys riding with anyone and everyone who’s willing. She loves the ability to connect with riders from across the country. Her usual riding partner is her boyfriend, Shawn Brogan. Together they get involved with local riding communities, charity poker runs and motorcycle events. They jokingly call themselves “99%-ers” because of their desire to ride with all who share their passion. They ride anywhere from the coastline to the desert but prefer scenic winding roads through the mountains. Favorite rides to date include the scenic bypass loop in Helen, GA and riding from Miami to Key West, FL. But Katie and Shawn are recently relocated to Maryland and they look forward to exploring the Northeast riding community. When Katie isn’t riding or serving our country, you can find her at the gym, snuggling with her German Shepherd and her Pitbull, hiking outdoors, shooting firearms or simply being a college football fanatic. FLBD thanks Katie for her service and welcomes her to Maryland and the Maryland motorcycle community!
