ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

The warm weather is upon us and, if you’re like me, every time I have to go out, I’m on my bike. No matter if it’s to go to work, to the store, or out to an event, I’m on my bike. I have been riding for more years than I care to remember, but with that time comes experience. I like to think I’ve seen it all when it comes to close calls or near misses. For those who read the local news, you may have seen my interview in a recent article. A couple of things were lost in edits - the first being the way I approach every ride. When I leave I am absolutely convinced that everyone and everything is out to kill me. Other drivers, wild and domestic animals, even the road signs. Given the opportunity, these things will try to kill you. It’s your responsibly to keep yourself safe from harm. While legally it may be someone else’s fault, you are the one with the bent motorcycle and the pain. The best defense you can have is to be well trained.

Riding every day will increase your experience, but how many times have you ever had to use maximum braking? When is the last time you had to swerve? These are just two of the critical skills you need to survive and the best way to hone those skills is by taking a rider course. These are conducted through the State of Delaware in all three counties. The cost is minimal and the benefit is priceless. The state offers courses for new riders, three wheelers, those with experience, and even sport bikes. Although I can say that I’ve been there, done that, I try and take the experienced course every couple of years to stay current. ABATE of Delaware encourages all of its members to attend a training class. For more information visit: https://services.dmv. de.gov/services/driver_services/driving_courses/dr_crs_mc_training.shtml

Everyday Heroes Donald M. Caldwell

SAINT ALBANS • WV

Donald Caldwell served in Desert Storm and is medically retired from the U.S. Air Force after being diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia. Although he is wheel-chair bound he didn’t give up his passion for riding and modified his trike to include a wheel chair carrier and an electric shifter. His modified trike is this month’s featured bike. He also served as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor and he proudly shares that his oldest student was a 91-year-old woman. Donald is married with four children. Sadly, he lost his oldest son, Nicholas Lee, to a 2008 hunting accident. Each of his sons own Harleys and they have been riding since the age of three. His almost-15-year-old daughter is anxious to ride so Donald recently purchased a Rebel 250 for her to use as a first bike after she receives her motorcycle permit. Donald also has six grandchildren and his 3-year-old grandson is already riding a dirt bike. But family riding started before Donald’s generation. His father, stepmother, and stepbrothers all had bikes and they rode to Myrtle Beach together. In fact, his grandmother, Lena Caldwell, bought him his first motorbike from Dohms Honda in Charleston, WV. Then his stepfather brought home a Suzuki RM 80 from New Jersey on his tractor trailer. Donald mowed lawns for two summers to pay for that bike. At 14, he moved to Grafton, WV and then to Hamlin, WV. He purchased a new DR80 but missed the power of the RM so traded it for a Kawasaki KX350. He moved, again, to Ona, WV and his home was less than a mile from an old paved racetrack. He rode that track many time, dodging the cow patties. By 16 he purchased his first street bike, a Honda Shadow 750. Because of Donald’s service, contribution to the motorcycle community as an MSF, instructor and for preserving the joy of family riding, FLBD is proud to name him as July’s Everyday Hero. We hope Donald’s desire to ride as long as possible exceeds all predicted possibilities.

SENIOR MOMENT PAM & LARRY POTTS Lovettsville • VA

When Larry Potts recalls his adult life and what he chose to do with his non-working hours—it always came back to motorcycling. Larry is a 70-year-old retiree from Loudoun County (VA) Dept of Parks and Recreation and he is still an active rider. Larry was a 23-year-old veteran of a 14-month tour in Viet Nam (1st Air Cavalry-B/2/8 Infantry Division) when he purchased his first bike, a used Honda 350. He wanted a motorcycle for as long as he could remember but as long as his parents were paying the bills, it was not going to happen. So, when it happened, it was a dream come true for Larry. Larry spent time racing motocross and in one of them placed 5th in a national race - it may be significant to note that there were only five riders in the race - but it still made a great story! Larry belongs to the VFW, American Legion and several local lodges. He considers himself an average rider with an above-average love for the freedom of motorcycling and seeing the country on two wheels. Following his late start with riding, Larry bought and sold about 30 bikes, ranging from a Kawasaki 100 to a Harley Davidson Road King (his current and favorite ride). If you look in his garage, you would also find an HD Sportster and a Kawasaki 650. Road-riding is Larry’s first love but he also spent many weekends racing with friends on motocross tracks in VA. And then there is Pam, Larry’s wife of 48 years. Pam and Larry met at college in Winchester, VA and were married in 1970. Pam also is passionate about motorcycles and after several years riding back seat, she decided it was time to ride her own. In 1972, Pam earned her license. She mostly rode the smaller bikes and, being a school teacher, often rode to her school. Her students, who were highschool age, loved it when she did. But her riding slowed when Larry purchased a Honda 750 for Pam in the 90s. Pam missed a turn, went over a bank, and through a barbed wire fence, damaging her knee. After the accident, she decided

to return to riding as a passenger and was simply happy there, out on the open road and enjoying the wind therapy while holding on to her beloved husband. Pam and Larry enjoy riding in the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland and a favorite ride is from Cumberland, MD to a tiny western MD mountain community called Little Orleans where they always stop at the famous “Bill’s Place.” Their longest rides were 250-300 miles and include trips down the Skyline Drive, down the Shenandoah Valley and into the mountains of West Virginia and Western Maryland. As a Viet Nam veteran, Larry has faithfully participated in the annual Rolling Thunder “Ride To The Wall” and has only missed four of the 30+ rides. Over the years, the Potts met some amazing people and the incredibly beautiful places they have seen are memories for a lifetime. Although they stay fairly close to home, they never run out of new roads to explore and their love for motorcycling has been a constant throughout their many years together. What advice do they have for new or inexperienced riders? “If you are a retiree or older rider who is new to the world of motorcycles, be cautious. So many accidents involving older, newly-licensed riders occur because it is thought to be easy. It isn’t and takes constant vigilance on the road. Learn to know your bike, be completely comfortable with it and always watch “that other guy!” Be careful out there!” FLBD thinks that’s great advice!

Celebrating all women who ride regardless of age or their ride of choice.

Angela F DeLuca Shirley • New York

Angela DeLuca has been riding for two years although she has had her license since 2004. The idea of riding a motorcycle always appealed to Angela but when she suffered the tragic loss of her first pregnancy, she decided she needed an outlet for her grief. She registered for the Motorcycle Safety Course. Angela loved her instructor and she took to riding well. When she passed her road test, Angela discovered she was expecting twins and riding was put on hold for twelve years. Then, while out for a drive with her boyfriend in 2016, a couple on motorcycles passed their car. Angela felt the fire ignite and within two weeks she purchased Jolene, her current bike. “I feel empowered and free when I’m riding. Nothing compares to it,” says Angela. Angela is a proud member of the Long Island Chapter of Women in the Wind, an international women-only riding organization. She enjoys riding in wideopen spaces and winding roads near the water. She also enjoys buzzing around town and often rides to work. Favorite rides are those she takes with her boyfriend, Michael, with Angela on Jolene and Michael on his silver Suzuki 1100. When not working as a master’s level social worker and therapist, Angela enjoys singing, cooking/baking, playing the baritone ukulele, and spending time with her family.

Where would you most like to reside if you could? Actually, it would be in three places during any given year: NYC, the French Alps and the Maldives, i.e. spending 1/3 of my time in the world’s most exciting town, 1/3 where exquisite skiing reigns supreme and 1/3 where you find the greatest diving grounds imaginable. 7. Who is your fictional hero? Terry Malloy, the low-key but courageous failed boxer/dockworker, played by Marlon Brando in the epic movie “On the Waterfront.” 8. Astrophysicist or AI scientist. 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Donald Trump. 13. What would you do if you were able to retire? Cross-global motorcycling, skiing, scuba-diving, playing chess marathons. Cardo is the world’s acknowledged market leader in wireless communication systems for motorcyclists. with Marty Sullivan

Good Motorcycle Morning!

I’m writing to you from the west coast paradise that is Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. It’s even hotter than Panama City, but I’ve been in Mexico for about 3 weeks now, I’m adjusting well. So much has happened since I last wrote to you. Let me catch you up on where I’ve been and where I still have yet to go! In last month’s column, I had just finished the Thunder Beach Moto Rally in Panama City, FL. From there I stopped in Mobile to check out the USS Alabama site. This is by far the best collection of Military Naval, Air, and Land vehicles that I have ever seen. After that I headed west to New Orleans for the world famous Beignets from Café Du Monde. The beignets were out of this world good☺. In Baton Rouge I visited the USS Kidd. The ship was great, but the A/C below decks was glorious. Ninety-five degrees and 40 lbs. of moto-gear do not mix well. Farther west, I spent a rough night on Surfside Beach in La Porte, TX. It was hot, muggy with sustained 30 mph winds; it was all I could do to keep me and my tent from being blown away. Farther south in Corpus Christi, I stepped on an aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, for the first time in my life. An F-14 Tomcat, and an aircraft carrier, total Top Gun Geek mode.☺ I stopped in Laredo for a couple of days to get ready to cross into Mexico. While I was there, I off-loaded all of the food that I wouldn’t be allowed to take into Mexico at the Lamar Bruni Vergara South Texas Food Bank, I caught up on my laundry, I changed some dollars into pesos, and I had to throw away my tent and air mattress. It was so hot that my air mattress exploded and my tent’s plastic zippers melted together. I spent my last night in the USA sleeping under a tarp and laying on the asphalt. The next day I crossed in Mexico. After some dealing with some super shady border officials, I headed south past Monterrey to Saltillo. That night I participated in the MC Cherokee Saltillo’s 3rd Anniversary moto meetup. So many MCs were there and they accepted me with open arms. I had a great time! Due South in San Luis Potosi, I met up with Professor Galvan of the “Sister Cities” organization. He was so hospitable; he treated me to some local food, and gave me a great tour of downtown San Luis Potosi. Farther south, just east of Mexico City, I spent a night in Pachuca. It’s higher altitude and cooler temperatures definitely made for a great night’s sleep. The 2 volcanoes in the backdrop of the city’s skyline are pretty spectacular too. From Pachuca I made my way to Cuernavaca via Puebla. The 2-lane country mountain roads were a great change from the big toll roads I had been using up till that point. I spent 11 days in Juitepec, a suburb of the capital city of Morelos, Cuernavaca. There I met up with my wife who had flown in the day before my arrival. So awesome.☺ While there, I also met up with the Motociclestas Libres Morelos. They took me on a grand tour of the entire state of Morelos. The highlight of which was the best place on the planet for authentic, fresh, cecina in Yecapixtla. So good☺. I also taught and trained with Master Cervantes, my niece, and the students of MudukKwan Tejalpa Taekwondo. On the way back from that, the alarm in the truck went off and it wouldn’t stop. We literally drove down narrow streets for about 20 mins. with the alarm screaming. It totally looked like we were stealing a truck. True story.☺ Also, while I was in Juitepec, my wife’s family and I took

a trip to Guerrero to visit the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa. They are extraordinary, underground caverns formed long ago and new caverns still being formed by the “Rio de dos bocas” that still emerges from underground. The same day that my wife departed Mexico on a flight bound for Atlanta, I headed north through Mexico City on my way to San Miguel de Allende for the night. Driving through Mexico City is no joke. There are 14 lanes of traffic, split vertically. There are interchanges every 2km or so where everyone is merging and departing vertically and horizontally. It is an ingenious way to move the population of one of the largest cities on earth, but it is so stressful to drive there. That night I had an entire house to myself in San Miguel de Allende. It was a great peaceful change from that trek through Mexico City. After that, I headed pretty much due west. I visited the Iglesia Del Grito in Dolores Hidalgo, and the Alhondiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato. Both sites were vital in the War of independence from Spain back in 1810. Also the city of Guanajuato is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. The architecture, the colors, everything is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I’ll be back for sure. ☺ From there I visited the Arco Triunfal in Leon. Then I headed on to Guadalajara, Jalisco. After a pretty uneventful night in Guadalajara, I made the curvy mountain road trip to Puerto Vallarta. And that’s where I’m writing from right now. While here I’ve spent two outstanding days dancing and training with Master Chavero and the students of Kim Chel Soo Taekwondo. I’ve also taken a few hours of my last day here in Vallarta to write to you. Tomorrow, I head east back to Guadalajara and then start my northerly trek back to the USA through San Luis Potosi, San Isidro, and Monterrey. Once back in the USA, I’ll have 2 moto events to attend, 1 boat race, and many mountain roads to explore. This ride is definitely living up to its name, almost every day something new and amazing happens. Just in case you forgot the name, it’s Epic Ride 2018. ☺ If you haven’t already, please hop over to Instagram @sightw or Facebook @ sightwo to follow me for daily live updates of Epic Ride 2018.
