Wow! The 2014 riding season is about to begin. We know this because The Timonoium Motorcycle Show is now behind us and that is the unofficial kick-off to the season. This is THE show that wets your appetite and stirs the desire to go into the garage and begin the process of insuring your ride is road ready – and we all know how important that is. Speaking of the Timonium Motorcycle Show, what did you think? As always, we thought it was a great show that offered a variety of vendors, entertainment, industry celebrities and some seriously cool bikes! FLBD had a huge presence this year in the South Hall at the South Stage. We noticed many of you took advantage of our FREE photo booth photo strips and FREE FLBD Magazine cover shots provided by One Rock Studio (on a Ducati bike provided by Battley Cycles!). The Two Wheel Wedding™ and romantic moments throughout the weekend (professions of love, renewing vows, etc.) courtesy of the magnificent R&R Events caused a couple of bikers to shed a tear or two. There was an abundance of things to see and do and, in case you missed it, we have extended show coverage in this issue and on our website at www.flbdelmarva.com where you can also find video of the Two Wheel WeddingSM and Bike Builder Build Off. Finally, if you have photos from the show you’d like to share, post them to our Facebook Fan Page at www.facebook.com/pages/ Fast-Lane-Biker-Magazine-Delmarva/304096356326114. We’d love to hear from you! So what’s next? We’re glad you asked! OC SPRING BIKE WEEK™ in Ocean City, MD, April 24th thru 27th is the next big stop on our fairly full 2014 schedule. So WHERE can you party with FLBD? Another great question my two-wheeled geniuses! Let’s start with 45TH STREET VILLAGE and TRADER LEE’S (which, by the way, is a stone-cold, die-hard biker bar 24/7, 365 days a year). Venues who would like to be an FLBD-approved host location and who would like OC Spring Bike Week™ to become a true community event that benefits everyone should contact marketing@flbdelmarva.com. Interested vendors should contact Gary Nowicki at eastcoastsyndicate@gmail.com. Why not be on the main drag or at OC’s only real biker bar?!? As you all know, FLBD is your FREE local motorcycle community magazine and we do our utmost to bring you consistent quality events where your well-being and value for your dollar is our primary concern – such as our NO COVER CHARGE policy that we insist a venue adhere to in whole or, minimally, in part (such as no cover until after 10 p.m.). We encourage readers to take in the local flavor on their bike during the day and park your ride at your hotel for the evening and use the Ocean Highway Beach Bus to get to local destinations where you can relax while listening to some good music. NEVER will an FLBD-affiliated event offer free drinks as prizes or incentive to be present at any of our locations. We will NEVER ask you to go bar hopping on your bikes. Unlike typical events, our vendors are open as long as they like to provide as much merchandise and services as is in demand by the REAL motorcycle community. Finally, it doesn’t matter if it’s called OC Spring Bike Week™ or anything else, please party safely and responsibly. In closing: Support those who support you 24/7/365. We’re FLBD and we ARE the voice of the motorcycle community in Delmarva! Come out and party with us and experience the difference. 3

Name:
DAVE SCHAEFFER
Submitted by Jane Zimmerman, Loyola Trikes
“Once a Marine, Always a Marine” - This truism is now the official motto of the Marine Corps League. Once the title “U.S. Marine” has been earned, it is retained. There are no ex-Marines or former-Marines. There are (1) active duty Marines, (2) retired Marines, (3) reserve Marines, and (4) Marine veterans. Nonetheless, once one has earned the title, he remains a Marine for life. This is definitely a fitting statement for Dave Schaeffer, who falls into the category of “Marine Veteran”, having served from 1962-1966 all over the Far East. Ironically, even Schaeffer’s birthday celebrates the US military: he was born on Memorial Day, May 30th. Purchasing a Military Green 2007 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic seemed a natural thing to do, and Schaeffer has been turning it into a military memorial ever since. Schaeffer is relatively new to motorcycling. He began riding in the early 1970’s, rode for about five years and then stopped riding while raising a family. At age 63 he took up riding again and purchased his first Harley, a 2003 Deuce. Deciding it was not really a two person bike with its uncomfortable passenger seat, Schaeffer upgraded to the 2007 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic. Tiring of the struggle to hold it up when starting and leaning, Schaeffer triked his bike at Leola Motortrike in 2011, then added Marine emblems and an embroidered Marine logo onto the fender bras. But the look is not complete. He is currently saving up to have the iconic mural of the marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima emblazoned onto this trike. After his military stint, Schaeffer worked in HVAC construction, which was followed by a career switch and another 22 years at Lancaster School District, retiring with the title of Maintenance Supervisor. While working HVAC construction was a man named Jim Bachman worked under
him. They had a running joke where Bachman would tell Schaeffer that he was going to marry Schaeffer’s oldest daughter. Schaeffer would retort, “Well, before that ever happens I’ll marry your sister!” and the two would have a good laugh because Schaeffer had actually never met Bachman’s sister. However, at that time, Schaeffer kept his hair in curly perms, as was popular in that era. One day, Schaeffer’s regular stylist was not available, and he needed another curly perm. Bachman said his sister Diane was a beautician, and gave her number to Schaeffer, who scheduled an appointment for his perm. Not only did the curly perm turn out well, the relationship did, too. Schaeffer actually did marry his co-worker’s sister! Schaeffer’s wife, Diane, is always with him, loving the open road as much as he does. They are actively involved with the Lancaster HOGS. He has joined the Patriot Guard and donates to them, and hopes someday to ride with them. The Schaeffers mostly ride day events, toy runs, and charity rides. A favorite place to ride is the mountains of Central PA, as they have a cabin up there. The longest ride was to Harrisonburg, VA over Memorial Day weekend, and another long ride was to NY State and through scenic Wellsboro, PA. Scenery is a big draw for the Schaeffer’s, who are tentatively planning a longer ride in 2014, possibly to North Carolina. But possibly the most fun he has on his trike is going golfing with a special golf rack he has for the back of the trike. “Being retired, golfing, and motorcycling is definitely a nice life!” laughs Schaeffer. His advice for younger cyclists is to “enjoy riding motorcycles, and always practice safety first”! Retrieved 12/09/13 from http://www.usmcpress.com/heritage/ usmc_slogans.htm

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director ABATE of Maryland has been very busy this month, working hard for your rights. We introduced two bills this legislative session: SB173 and HB477 - Protective Headgear Requirements for Motorcycle Riders - Exception. This bill would allow an adult at least 21 years of age and who has $10,000 in health insurance freedom of choice in helmet usage. It has been heard in both Judicial Proceedings and Environmental Matters Committees. We are waiting on a vote in these committees. We also introduced HB666 and SB640 which would make Motorcycle Only Checkpoints illegal. This bill has also been heard in both committees and we are awaiting a vote. These bills are in addition to several bills on our watchlist that we support including: SB580 - Consumer Protection - Sales of Tires - Limitations and Required Notice. This bill would require merchants who sell tires to make consumers aware of the age of the tire in writing. This is a consumer awareness bill. SB533 - Forests and Parks - Public Recreation on Private and State-Owned Land - Off-Highway Vehicles. This would expand a certain liability exemption for a landowner who agrees to the use of a defined part of the landowner’s
11
property for cross-country skiing or snowmobiling in Garrett County to apply to the use of an off-highway vehicle in the State. This would help open up private properties for offroaders to ride and exempt property owners from liability. Many of us grew up riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes before we moved to on-road motorcycles. It is important that there are designated locations for people to ride in the state. SB80 - ABATE of Maryland testified against SB80 which would have required protective headgear on all-terrain vehicle riders of any age. Even on private property. Thank heavens that died in committee. HB835 - Motor Vehicles - Criminal Negligence Resulting in Deaths. This is a bill ABATE supports and we will continue to follow the progress of this bill. As you can see, this is the busiest time of year for ABATE as we push forward representing Maryland motorcyclists in Annapolis. We will keep you updated on the above bills. ABATE of Maryland is also working with the MVA to update the motorcycle section in the drivers handbook. This has been a long time coming and we are looking forward to working with The Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists and the MVA. We are very thankful to Delegate James Malone for making this happen.

Hightopps Backstage Grille • Lutherville • MD It’s FINALLY March and riding season is just about upon us. Now if we could only get Mother Nature to cooperate with us we can get some riding in. It seems like her and Old Man Winter are fighting it out at our expense. We are treated to a decent 40° one day and then 10° the next, WTF! I started prepping my bike right after the Timonium Motorcycle Show last month. Looking at all the new bikes, custom bikes, riding gear, and custom sights (if you know what I mean) got my motor started for the riding season. Speaking of the Timonium Show, I was down there for 3 days with Big Poppa and Miss Caroline to meet and greet you all. Hopefully you got your free kickstand puck. Trust me, they will come in handy once we hit those 90 degree days. We spent plenty of time at the show but as everyone knows you have to eat sometime, and we ventured out to a few local spots. Now as much as you want to know about the Continental Breakfast courtesy of our Ramada Inn (it was your average setup - just enough to get your motor running and a few cups of coffee for Big Poppa and Miss Caroline to shake off the boozing from the night before), I’ll skip the details and get to the good stuff. One afternoon we decided on JIMMY JOHNS for lunch and, although the staff was extremely nice, the subs left something to be desired. I felt cheated again with too little meat and too many veggies on my sub but I guess that’s their deal. It had a good roll with fresh meat but left me wanting less filler and more substance. I guess it’s the fat guy in me. We did our traditional stop at THE CORNER STABLE, a MUST if you are in Timonium because they truly have the best ribs in the Baltimore area. Our waiter, Charley, was awesome - quick with the drinks, and even quicker with the one-liners. He made our visit to The Corner Stable that much more enjoyable. This year’s choice for our annual Saturday night “unwinding” was HIGHTTOPS BACKSTAGE GRILLE lo-
cated on the corner of the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The entire entourage wandered in after the show and, just like every local venue, this place was packed. Miss Caroline made a b-line for the bar and Big Poppa rounded up a bar table with a few chairs. Our waiter squeezed in with menus and was very friendly and efficient despite the crazy atmosphere. It was late and I opted for a jalapeno burger. I didn’t want a full meal. Our entourage wanted to get to the back room where they had live music. My order arrived surprisingly fast and included crunchy fries and a burger cooked medium rare, topped with tomatoes and jalapeno cheese on a warm burger bun, just as requested. I devoured my food just in time to head to the back room. There was a huge bar in a log cabin room complete with a fireplace, plush leather couches, and a band that played some great music. I was set for the night. My belly was full, there was good music, and our waitress, Sarah, kept my drink full. There wasn’t much else I needed. I did check out the DJ and dance floor located in a section next to the back room a few times and, in my travels, I noted another bar area to one side and even an outside bar off of the back room. This place is huge and I will have to make another run down there to check it out during the day. After a couple rounds of Jaeger and multiple Crown and Cokes I decided to call it a night before I got myself into too much trouble. If you are looking for a nice ride and a cool place to hang out, I highly recommend Hightopps. The food I had was basic, but the menu offers plenty of options, including scallops, crab cakes, and more. The staff was extremely attentive which was impressive in light of the number of people who packed the place, and the atmosphere was awesome. Hightopps Backstage Grille is located at 2306 York Road, Timonium, MD. Until next time, remember - It’s just another day in paradise.

8. Who do you consider your real life hero? My grandfather, a decorated WWII and Korean War vet and was the most compassionate individual I’ve ever met. 1. How long have you been involved with your business? More than 3 years. 2. What do you do in that capacity? I create leather products relating to the biker culture including seats, tool rolls, and saddled bags. I also make main stream items such as wallets, wrist cuffs, belts, holsters, sheaths, patches, framed art, phone cases, and anything creative I can get commissioned. Everything is hand-made the oldfashioned way, and all designs and lettering are tooled, not stamped.
9. What is the most awesome thing you own? My ’87 FXR that I’ve torn apart and put back together so often that it looks nothing like it did off the assembly line. Many of the modifications I made by hand with a torch and welder. I call it ‘The FXR Upper.’ 10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Either “You made this?” or, more often, “Can you pass me a beer?” I respond “yes” on both occasions. 11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? I would build custom scoots for a living. I love working with my hands and the creative aspects. But I’ve seen too many guys open “custom” shops only to become mechanics and lose all creativity.
3. Where were you born and where do you currently reside? Hagerstown, MD. 4. What do you like/admire most about yourself? My boyish charm and striking good looks (I kid). It would probably be my ability to juggle time. I’m married with a 2-year-old son, work full-time and run two businesses on the side. 5. What would you change about yourself? I wouldn’t have let myself get fat in college and I’m working my way back down now but still managed to bag a smokin’ hot wife, so I guess it’s not all bad! 6. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? The ’57 Chevy Stepside sitting my back yard waiting for someone to start working on it. 7. Who is your fictional hero? I always loved those Rambo movies. You can’t beat the cheesy 80’s action
12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Who’s that dude that got engaged to Scarlett Johannson? 13. What would you do if you were able to retire? Sit on my ass for about a week then I’d have to get my hands dirty. I’d build all kinds of motorized stuff, renovate my house, and hit the gym like a banshee. I’d keep doing the leatherwork too. It’s the one job I enjoy. AMMO Leatherworks is located on Sharpsburg Pike, Hagerstown, MD, (301) 379-2345 or find them on Facebook as AMMO Leatherworks.

2014 TIMONIUM MOTORCYCLE SHOW 12TH YEAR OF SUCCESS IS NO ACCIDENT
Even threats by Mother Nature and Old Man Winter could prevent motorcycle enthusiasts from a 12-year biker tradition - The Timonium Motorcycle Show. While weather did present challenges for a handful of participants, it didn’t appear to hinder the thousands of attendees who were happy to shop vendors, drool over cool bikes, talk with industry celebrities, participate in contests and take in the variety of entertainment scheduled for the 2014 show.
Traditional attractions on the North Stage included the International Bikini Team Finals and the presence of the 98 Rock crew. New this year was FLBD’s expanded presence on the South Stage that featured the Timonium Motorcycle Show’s first-time-ever Two Wheel Wedding, joining Sandra Sanna and Jimmy Buckles in marriage and made incredibly special via the talents of R&R Events. While the air was full of love (and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner), men and women were invited on stage to profess feelings of love for their special someone, earning a single rose. Others renewed wedding vows and danced to romantic songs. Also new this year at the FLBD South Stage area was One Rock Studio’s FREE photo booth photo ops as well as FREE Ducati photo ops imposed on the cover of Fast Lane Biker Magazine also courtesy of One Rock Studio and Battley Cycles. Rounding out the talent were Spokes model photo ops, Sassy Girls Dance Team, cool bikes on display, FLBD giveaways and more. In the Swap Meet Pavilion, FLBD hosted the Baddest Bike Builder Build Off. Congratulations to Cyclone Cycles who not only took 1st place in the competition, but also took People’s Choice award. Special thanks to Custom Auto & Cycles Jerry Tulley for his support and rocking display of custom built bikes. Jerry could also be seen in the procession behind our Two Wheel Wedding bride as she was escorted to the South Stage. What a gentleman! No one can deny this was an awesome event that by no means is accidental or a stroke of luck. We’d like to acknowledge the herculean tasks successfully executed year after year by promoter Rich Kohles, Jackie and Chuck Albright, Lisa Shackleford, Charlotte Plines and the rest of the Timonium Motorcycle Show staff who, simply, know what they are doing. See you all at the 2015 show, Feb. 13th thru 15th.

Two Wheel Wedding Contest Winners Sandra Sanna and James “Jimmy” Buckles In 2008, Jimmy and Sandra’s paths crossed for the first time when Jimmy walked into Clinton Cycles. Sandra sold motorcycles at Clinton and Jimmy was a regular there. All the ladies who worked at Clinton would make their way to the floor to say hello whenever Jimmy stopped by but Sandra, a married lady, had only a friendly interest in Jimmy. They found they had many friends and interests in common and both had children - Jimmy is father to one daughter and Sandra is mother to two sons. Friendship and conversation came easy. But time marches on and by 2010 Sandra had left her job at Clinton. She was newly single and she had volunteered to man a March of Dimes booth at Seacrets during Delmarva Bike Week. To pass the time, Sandra texted a friend who still worked at Clinton and asked if anyone from her old job was at bike week. The friend mentioned that Jimmy was there and, at that very moment, was on his way to Seacrets! Jimmy stopped by the booth and kept Sandra company throughout the day. When it was time to shut down, Jimmy helped pack up and then asked Sandra to join him for a night on the town. “How could I refuse?” says Sandra. Early the next morning, Sandra left Ocean City and thought of Jimmy the entire trip home. Although she enjoyed spending time with Jimmy, she had a feeling she wouldn’t see him again. But the very next day, Jimmy showed up at Sandra’s work and took her to lunch. They haven’t been apart since. This past Christmas, Sandra’s sons purchased a Christmas present for their mom from a Santa’s Workshop at their elementary school. On Christmas morning, Sandra sat on a family room ottoman, with Jimmy sitting behind her, watching the children open presents. Sandra’s eldest son, JoJo, presented her with a gift, a little expandable ring with a purple stone. Sandra put the ring on her finger and smothered her son in kisses. Then Sandra’s youngest son, Nico, gave her a gift - it was the same ring with a green stone. She put the ring on her finger and, again, made a fuss and smothered him in kisses. Jimmy quickly left the room and, when he returned, was again sitting behind Sandra on the ottoman. He handed her a ring and said, “Here, wear this one and marry me!” Sandra said yes. Shortly after the engagement, Sandra’s friend forwarded an email to Sandra about a contest for a biker wedding, Sandra deleted it. When the friend called Sandra to follow up and asked if Jimmy saw it, Sandra fished it out of the “trash” and forwarded it to Jimmy. He told her to go for it. With less than 45 days to plan, Jimmy and Sandra learned they were the winners of the Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva/R&R Events Two Wheel Wedding and on Friday, February 7, 2014, Sandra and Jimmy were married at the Timonium Motorcycle Show, a first for the 12 year event. The ceremony was unique to say the least. Sandra was escorted from the door by her young sons, who acted as her Men of Honor, and a variety of others from the motorcycle community including members of

Rolling Thunder (Jimmy is also a member), ABATE of Maryland, Jerry Tulley (who was competing in the Baddest Biker Build Off), Captain Mango and his pirate wenches and, much to the delight of Sandra’s boys, one of the Boumi Clowns who carried Sandra’s train down the aisles and past vendors, onlookers and well-wishers. But as Sandra and the boys approached the alter where Jimmy waited with his daughter, Gabrielle, who stood for Jimmy as his “Best Girl”, the crowd hushed and the mood turned serious. All eyes were on the south stage, many welled with tears, as the bride, groom and their respective children were bound for life in the eyes of God and in the hearts of all who were there to bear witness. After vows and rings were exchanged and the first kiss as husband and wife was shared, the crowd burst into applause and Jimmy and Sandra were given a proper biker send-off into married life. They danced their first dance on the stage to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” At the stage-side reception, hugs, kisses and congratulations flowed but the most heart-felt moment was Gabrielle’s toast to the happy couple - there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Jimmy is a police officer with Prince George’s County for more than 21 years and has ranged in positions from Motor Patrol (motorcycles) to Detective to Background Investigations/Recruitment. He is also a Desert Storm vet. Sandra is employed by the March of Dimes for almost 2 years but has been volunteering for the cause since 2006. The premature birth of her first son made her desire to become involved personal. Prior to the March of Dimes, Sandra worked in Human Resources for the Federal Government, construction work, motorcycle sales and customer service. Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva and R&R Events wish Sandra and Jimmy a very happy life together. We would also like to thank R&R Events, The Timonium Motorcycle Show and the various sponsors who provided Sandra and Jimmy with a one-ofa-kind wedding and a heck of a story to hand down through the generations. Salute!

Recently I read an article about a motorcycle accident which took place in Philadelphia wherein a motorcycle rider lost his life when he collided with another driver who was making an illegal u-turn. This is not a motorcycle accident claim my firm handled, but it follows along with many of our own clients who tell very similar stories. In this Pennsylvania motorcycle accident the driver who caused the fatality merely received a citation and the grieving family, from North Carolina, was left to seek retribution from their insurance company. The at fault party was not even drug or alcohol tested, however the decedent, who did absolutely nothing wrong to contribute to the cause of this accident, was tested for both drugs and alcohol – both of which were negative. Unfortunately, we will never know if the same were true of the at fault party.
On an entirely different note, many of our motorcycle clients have coverage on their motorcycle, but most do not have enough. Although it is rare that a motorcycle will ever do significant damage to the occupants of an automobile, for the extra couple of bucks, it is worth purchasing as much liability coverage you can afford, so your uninsured and underinsured limits can match it. Because remember, you can not have more UM/UIM coverage on your policy than liability coverage – you can only have the same, or buy it down – which you should NEVER DO. I don’t care what anyone tells you, do not let them convince you that this is where you can save money on your premium – trust me, it will only serve to cost you in the long run should ever be the victim of an accident. You also want to look into whether or not you have medical and disability coverage as well.
As always, if upon reading this material you have any To add salt to the wound, the person responsible for questions regarding this topic or any others, please killing the motorcycle rider never bothered to call feel free to contact me at LeeGaber@cycleattorney. or send a note of condolence to the grieving family. com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352). TIMONIUM MOTORCYCLE SHOW GOES SASSY!
The crowd gathered as the first few chords rang out from the South Stage at the 12th Annual Timonium Motorcycle Show hosted by Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva. Perhaps you noticed the five strategically placed chairs and wondered what role they would play. I venture to imagine that most noticed the five members of the Sassy Girls Dance Team who took the stage by storm with carefully choreographed dance routines that entertained and excited show attendees throughout the weekend. When not performing, these beautiful, fun and adventurous ladies posed with fans and discussed dance and fitness with anyone curious enough to ask. Fitness? Yes, fitness. The Sassy Girls Dance Team concept is the brainchild of owner/instructor/dancer Teresa Powers who also owns Sassy Girl Fitness, a pole, aerial and cardio studio located in Martinsburg, WV. After only a few public fitness demonstrations, Teresa was asked to take her dance talents to stages at bike shows, auto shows and fundraisers and the Sassy Girls were quick to dive into public performances. The members of Sassy Girls are talented dancers and models with backgrounds in dance, gymnastics, cheer leading, aerial and pole. But make no mistake, these ladies are also business professionals in areas that include fitness instructor, human resources, nursing, insurance, retail and sales.
For more information or to book the Sassy Girls at your next event, contact Teresa at (301) 991-7247 or visit the Sassy Girls on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SassyGirlFitnessLLC. Be sure to look for the Sassy Girls at OC Spring Bike Week in Ocean City, MD, April 24th thru 27th at the 45th Street Village. Photos courtesy of Sassy Girls Dance Team and Hotz Photography.
