March. The wind-down from the Timonium Motorcycle Show and the launchpad into riding season. Our schedule is filling fast and it’s going to be an exciting time for Mid-Atlantic motorcyclists! If you were at the Timonium Show, check out FLBD’s follow-up because you never know if you’ll show up there. FLBD dominated the Main Hall with a variety of drag bikes, Jerry Tully’s always awesome display of custom builds, 100.7 The Bay, Marty “Good Motorcycle Morning” Sullivan, FLBD spokesmodel EJ Rose and Brandi Waters of Muddy Waters Photography. We want to thank all those who joined us this year and hope to see them again in 2019! April brings the Baltimore Tattoo Convention and that means FLBD will focus on that special relationship between bikers and ink. If you are a biker who loves to show off his ink, or if you have a bike adorned with tattoo-style art, send your photo, name, city and state to submissions@flbdelmarva.com. Of course, we are already focusing on May and one of the most important events in the motorcycle community. If you are a member of a Rolling Thunder chapter, send your chapter’s photo (don’t forget to note chapter number and city/state) for inclusion in the Rolling Thunder Tribute Issue. We would also like to hear from individual Veterans’ riding groups. If you belong to a riding organization focused on Veterans or Veterans support, send us your organization photo, organization name, and

city/state. If you are interested in sponsoring or advertising opportunities in the Rolling Thunder Tribute Issue, contact marketing@flbdelmarva.com. Remember: FLBD is the only publication permitted distribution in the Pentagon Parking Lot and at the Reflection Pool. Help us support this important event through content, advertising and sponsorship! Our June issue will, once again, feature Women In Motorcycling. If you are a woman who rides and wants to be featured, get ready! Details will be available in the near future. Until next month, keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

As the weather begins to warm, our collective thoughts begin to focus on the upcoming riding season. Our bikes are being tuned and made ready for the miles ahead. We’ll check the tire pressures, inspect the tires and wheels, accomplish function checks on all of the systems to make sure everything is in good working order. But wait, haven’t you forgotten something? When was the last time you took a Motorcycle Safety Course? They aren’t just for new riders! The State of Delaware offers an experienced rider course. The Novice course is the perfect place to learn how to ride a motorcycle (full disclosure, I taught this for many years). First, instructors will teach you the basic skills, as well as the important accident avoidance skills, you’ll need to survive on the street. The course is typically held on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. It consists of classroom and hands-on practice with a motorcycle provided by the state. Once you successfully complete this course, you can go directly to the DMV and retrieve your motorcycle endorsement with no additional testing. I strongly recommend this course for anyone who wants to be a licensed rider. The course cost is $50 which is far less than other available classes that use the same material. It’s better to spend the money and attend the course than to jump in without this valuable knowledge and spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars before understanding and mastering basic skills. And seriously, what better way to spend a weekend than riding a State-owned motorcycle? The experienced rider course is for those who have an endorsement and want to brush up on their skills. After all, it’s not every day you have to swerve to avoid an object, or practice maximum braking. It’s normally held on a Sunday (schedule varies) and costs just $35. You’ll use your own bike and this one is mostly hands-on. Completion of either of these classes give you a 10% discount on your liability motorcycle insurance. You’ve prepped your bike, now prep yourself!! For information on becoming an ABATE member, visit www.abateofde.com.

Motorcycle and fitness model Angela Prohaska is best known on social media as PowerStrokeGirl but is so much more. Angela and her husband own and operate ProNasty Cycles in Orange Park, FL. She is mother to two teenagers, a cancer survivor, and is employed overseas as a US State Department contract employee. Her husband serves overseas as well. It was her personal decision to train hard and lose weight that led her to embrace fitness and modeling. Angela can also be found on YouTube hosting “how-to videos on motorcycle and diesel engine builds. Her garage skill levels are considered above average, particularly for a woman. But she is passionate about working in the garage and building baggers. Angela enjoys riding her motorcycle, nurturing her Presa Canario puppies raised at ProNasty Kennels, being in front of the camera and encouraging others to achieve their goals. with Marty Sullivan

This past month I had the chance to visit the Timonium Motorcycle Show in Maryland. I walked around and took a lot of pics and got the chance to sit down to listen to the stories of folks who have traveled all around the world on their motorbikes. That gave me the idea to write this article. As you may or may not know, Epic Ride 2018 is coming up in April. Let’s talk about what it takes to pull off something like that. Training and/or Experience - Both are beneficial before setting out on a long motorcycle journey but I think perception is a big part of it too. How you perceive a problem, or inconvenience, matters. How well you are prepared for that issue matters even more. So, get ready for every eventuality but also get ready to learn from things you can’t control. There are many :) Your Motorcycle - Of course you need to know how to ride a motorcycle. More so, you need to know how to ride your motorcycle in various different conditions, i.e. dirt, road, rain, mud, etc. You can control many things but the weather is not one of them. You also need to know how to fix fixable things on your bike. It doesn’t matter if you just had it serviced. Every motorcycle has a finite number of miles it will go. No one knows how many, but we do know that the longer the trip you take, the closer you’re getting to that number. Something is going break at some time, guaranteed. Your Gear - Gear matters. Safety matters. Comfort matters. Gear matters - the more miles you ride, the more weather conditions you ride through, the more gear you need. You need comfortable gear. An itch on day 1 could be a blister on day 20. You need tough gear. Gear that can withstand tropical storm to hurricane force winds. Of course, you can’t take everything with you but, unfortunately, the only way to find out exactly what gear you need and what gear is useless, is to just go. 20 days later, you’ll know :) Your Sleep - Hotels are just not feasible. For most of us, anyhow, we’re not rich. A weekend of hotels is good. A month of hotels is super expensive. In my experience it is best to plan to camp on long distance journeys. Now that doesn’t mean you’ll camp every day. Sometimes the weather won’t let you,

FAST LANE BIKER

26

sometimes the critters won’t let you, or sometimes you just need a hot shower and clean sheets. Plan to camp, but budget for hotels, and you’ll always come out ahead. Before we finish here, I’d like to share with you a little tidbit I got from the Timonium Motorcycle Show. I attended a presentation by Lisa & Thomas of “2 Ride The World.” These folks literally rode motorbikes almost everywhere on this planet. When asked what is the most important thing to consider on their trips, they said, “now that we’re getting older, it’s our health.” How your body feels after a long day of riding. How your body feels after eating a new food in a far-off land. Being healthy and fit will greatly increase the odds that these are positive, or at the very least bearable, situations. So my new goal for this Epic Ride is to become healthier, more fit, more able to successfully overcome those things that you don’t think of before you leave but affects every minute of your days thereafter. Epic Ride 2018 starts on April 25th. Interested? It’s all at SullivanSightWorks.com Good Motorcycle Morning!
