Name: Frank Appice Location: New York Age: 75 Frank Appice (aka “Frankie TowKar”) was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 16, 1937. A true motorcycle enthusiast, he began riding at 18 and still rides today. Frank joined the United States Navy serving from 1955 to 1958. He was onboard the U.S.S. Intrepid and was stationed in Bainbridge, MD and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He traveled to France and Ireland. He is a member of the Former Crewmembers Association, currently on its Board of Directors and a past Vice President. In 1972 he started Tow Kar Systems, a trucking business that transports cars. He is semi-retired but still owns the business.

Frank has ridden with several groups as well as the Brooklyn and NYC HOG chapters. He has been a member of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. for nearly 25 years. He was instrumental in the creation of Chapter 1 Brooklyn, and the former Chapter 2 Brooklyn. He was the founder and Chairman of the Board for Chapter 2 NY in Staten Island where he is mentor to its 60 plus members. He is a member of the D.A.V. and as Chapter 2 NY Chairman, oversees their annual D.A.V. support run. He is truly a legend in the New York City area motorcycle community being respected by all for his dedication and devotion to his country, its veterans and anything veteran related. Frank has been riding for about 60 years and has only owned Harley Davidsons. His Harleys have included a rigid pan head in his early days then a 1972 dresser, his 1991 Heritage and a 2006 Softail. He currently rides a 2012 TriGlide Ultra. At 75 years old he is still passionate about riding. He never misses Memorial Day weekend in Washington D.C. for their annual Rolling Thunder® demonstration. His travels have taken him as far as Sturgis, SD. Frank and his wife Joanne have been married for 30 years. They have 7 children all sharing his love for motorcycles. They were also blessed with 14 grandchildren with another on way and 1 great-grandchild. 75 YEARS OLD, 60 YEARS ON A HARLEY AND NO END IN SIGHT!! A TRUE INSPIRATION! RIDE ON BROTHER!!

TREASURER•ROLLING THUNDER®, INC. NATIONAL 1) How long have you been involved with Rolling Thunder®, Inc.? I attended my first Rolling Thunder® demonstration in Washington, D.C. in 1989 and have participated every year, bringing different groups. 2) What are your accomplishments as a Rolling Thunder® member? In 1992, I started the Mountain Lake Vietnam Veteran’s Coalition to raise funds for the New Jersey State Vietnam Memorial until it was completed in Holmdel, NJ. I am co-founder and served as President of Rolling Thunder® New Jersey Chapter 3, which was awarded the Medal of Valor by the New Jersey Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs. I transferred to Rolling Thunder® National in 2000 and became Treasurer in 2005. 3) What are your responsibilities as Treasurer? As Rolling Thunder®, Inc. National and Rolling Thunder® Charities, Inc. Treasurer my responsibilities include the transmission of all outgoing monies of funds in an appropriate manner according to IRS non-profit regulations. 4) Where were you born? I was born in Summit, NJ and raised in Peapack/ Gladstone and Hackettstown, NJ. 5) Were you in the military and, if so, which branch? I served in the US Navy 68 - 74. 6) Where did you serve? I served as a Radioman in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico then in Vietnam on the USS Forster, the only ship to-date still held by a foreign country. 7) Do you ride? I ride a 1991 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom. 8) What is your current occupation? Contractor/disc jockey. 9) Who do you consider your real life hero? Ronald Reagan 10) What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Question: Do you really think there are live POWs being held? Answer: In my opinion, they might not still be alive but they were being held until they died. 11) How was your life affected as a result of your time in the military? I have come to realize that we should all donate a portion of our life to this great country. Being in the military affected my outlook for my future endeavors in family, friendships and my work ethic. 12) Given the opportunity to go back in time what you change about your future? I would have spent more time furthering my education and establishing a meaningful family life. 13) What would you do if you were able to retire? Go crazy!

ALWAYS RON’S • HAGERSTOWN, MD By Jay Kuch, Mystery Food Critique

The sun was shining and the FLBD crew decided it was a perfect day to cruise to Hagerstown, Maryland. We met up with our good friend, Capt. Mango, and set off to find a biker-friendly eatery where we could chow down. Mango suggested one of his favorite spots, Always Ron’s, located in the heart of Hagerstown. We pulled up to what, at least on the outside, appeared to be a typical local watering hole. Now that isn’t necessarily a bad thing so don’t get me wrong. Some of the best meals I ever ate came from the kitchens of off-the-beaten-path, small-town eateries. Once we stepped inside, we were transported to Hagerstown past. There are curio cabinets filled with memorabilia of sports, politics and events from days gone by. In the cozy main dining area, wall hangings and shelves displayed more historical reminders. The bar was the centerpiece and I can honestly say this place had that “down home” feeling going on and it carries over to the staff who are accommodating, polite and eager to make your stop as enjoyable as possible. In other words, we like this place. We sat down and scanned the impressive menu. Ron’s has just about everything – steaks, burgers, BBQ, pasta, seafood and an extensive sandwich list. Pricing was very reasonable and you could get a complete dinner for under $10 if you had a mind to do so. As we salivated over the menu and narrowed our choices, Mike Guessford, owner of Always Ron’s and friend to Capt. Mango, stopped by our table to say hello. He asked if he could join us for lunch and we welcomed him in true FLBD style. Since it was lunch, we decided on sandwiches and looked to Mike for suggestions. It so happened the specialty of the week was a Reuben. Now I’m not real good with sauerkraut so I decided to make it a Rachael – so did everyone else except Miss Caroline who decided to stick with her turkey (we’re talking about the sandwich, not Big Poppa). Once our orders were in we sat and chatted with Mike. Mike is a Hagerstown local, born and raised. Ron’s, as it was called in its prior life, was one of his favorite haunts and he even worked there for a bit. When the place came up for sale a number of years ago he bought it. Some of his modifications included changing the name to Always Ron’s and updating the menu. Our food arrived and the Rachael was huge with lots of really good lean corned beef and homemade coleslaw (a house specialty) served on rye bread baked by local bakery, Sander’s Cookie Jar. The accompanying fries were hand cut and the portions were huge. Everything was absolutely awesome. Mike was pleased that we enjoyed the food and it was obvious he takes pride in owning this place. Always Ron’s gets the FLBD seal of approval for good food served in good portions for a good price. So if you are out and about in Hagerstown, be sure to stop and tell them FLBD sent you! Congressman Jon Runyan New Jersey Republican 3th District was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2010 to represent New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District in Congress. The 3rd District is located in central New Jersey and stretches from the Pennsylvania border to the Jersey coastline. It encompasses parts of Burlington and Ocean counties. He also serves on the Tactical Air and Land, and Seapower and Projection Forces subcommittees of the House Armed Services Committee, which will allow him to protect the jobs and mission of those serving at McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, a joint base for the Air Force, Army and Navy. He also chairs the Disability and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) Subcommittee of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. This subcommittee oversees veterans’ benefits and cemeteries. Jon was born in Flint, MI where his father worked for General Motors for nearly 30 years while his mother largely stayed home and raised Jon and his two younger twin brothers. An accomplished high school athlete, 12

Jon earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan to play football, becoming the first person in his family to attend college. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) in 1996 and helped the Titans reach the Super Bowl in 2000. Jon then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he enjoyed a successful career as an offensive tackle, helping to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance in 2004. Jon retired from football at the end of the 2010 season.

Loch Rannoch Pipes & Drums can trace its beginnings back to 1997, a Scottish Import Shop and the Pineville, PA Post Office. The formation of the band began with Keith Swanson, a rock musician from Staten Island, NY and Postmaster of the Pineville Post Office, and with Drum Major Sandy Sinclair (Ret.) Sandy hailed from Perth, Scotland, near Loch Rannoch in the central highlands. That became the band’s name and tartan, Drummond of Perth (modern). Soon the five-member band hit the streets as the Loch Rannoch Pipe Band. From those humble beginnings, the band has grown to a full-fledged pipes and drums unit, 17 members strong. The Loch Rannoch Pipe Band has marched in parades from Edinburgh, Scotland to New York City to Washington. Some members have played for Her Majesty the Queen of England. Loch Rannoch plays the traditional sets along with the occasional playful touch of the unusual like their tribute to America and the Armed Forces which include a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”. In the spring of 2006 Loch Rannoch became the affiliate pipe band of the Emerald Society of Bucks & Montgomery Counties and in early 2008 began participating in events with Rolling Thunder. George Jackson’s scrolls for deployed U.S. troops were on display and ready to communicate heartfelt messages from the huge turnout at Harley-Davidson of Seaford on April 13th and 14th.

2013 Christmas Scroll for the Delaware National Guard was started on April 13th at Harley-Davidson of Seaford. The Scroll is so large it will take until November to complete, however, this photo was taken after only 2 hours of being set up for the first time. Jackson estimates it will be over 600 ft. long upon completion.

The following letter was received by Rolling Thunder in 2005 after the remains of 12 MIAs were found and, after 37 years, returned home to their final resting place. We felt it was time to revisit and remember. From day one, being a part of Rolling Thunder MA1 has always made me feel proud. After this past weekend, taking part in the burial of twelve fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery, has only strengthened that feeling. I joined members of Rolling Thunder Virginia 3 and Rolling Thunder Virginia 2 in paying respect to family and friends of these heroes, two of which are from our own State. In a steady mist, members of the U.S. Marine Corp brought the first casket carrying the remains of these heroes from the Battle of Ngok Tavak thirty-seven years after their death. Finally, welcome home. As the first flag was folded and hugged like it was a newborn, it was gently placed on the lap of a relative with thanks from a grateful nation. This was repeated eleven more times as young men in our service walked up to the casket, touching it ever so slightly with the edge of the folded flag and then placing it on lap of another family member. I never took my eyes off of the casket during this moving tribute. After a salute of gunfire, shots which could be heard echoing throughout the cemetery, taps was played. I don’t need to tell you that there was a lot of water flowing, and it wasn’t just from the sky. I spoke with the mother of Pvt. William D. McGonigle of Wichita, and her feeling was that if it rains during a funeral, then the person died happy. At the conclusion of the service, I joined Rolling Thunder Virginia 3 in handing out plaques to each and every family. Rolling Thunder Virginia 3 tries to do this for all recovered remains or whenever possible for our fallen heroes buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The families were overwhelmed by the support given to them from Rolling Thunder. They couldn’t say thank you enough for the kindness and support shown to them from this group of men and women dedicated to the cause of POW/MIAs and all veterans past and present. From the moment we got there until the time I left Regan National Airport, I heard nothing but praise for all Rolling

Thunder members and all they do. About a half hour after presentations of the plaques to the families of our twelve fallen heroes, a second service began for Lance Cpl. Raymond T. Heyne, who was buried next to his fallen brothers. Just as impressive as the first ceremony, they carried him forth and gave him all of the honors of a true hero. At the conclusion of his funeral, I was invited to join three Rolling Thunder Virginia 3 members in laying beads on the casket, which is a ceremony they take part in at each and every funeral they attend. One set of beads represents the Vietnam Service medal, the other the Purple Heart. We walked up in line, faced the family and placed the beads on the casket with a salute and a welcome home. We said our good bye. After thanking the members of Rolling Thunder Virginia 3 for treating me as one of their own, I briefly joined some of the families back at the Hilton in Alexandria. I talked with Mothers, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, and one God Daughter. The non-stop praise for Rolling Thunder was unbelievable. I am extremely proud and honored to represent each and every member of Rolling Thunder across this country. But I am most proud to represent you, my brothers and sisters of Rolling Thunder MA1. Ocean City, MD - Something big is brewing in Ocean City and in the heart of the Delmarva motorcycle community. Early reports rumored the end of an era – no more Delmarva Bike Week. We caught up with OC BikeFest promoter Cliff Sutherland and learned that what seems to be the end might very well be an exciting new beginning. I clearly remember the first time I met Cliff Sutherland – it was April, 2011. Speculative discussion in hushed tones awaited the reason city officials and local press were invited to a conference led by Sutherland, the co-owner of Triple S Harley-Davidson and board member of MountainFest Motorcycle Rally, both situated in Morgantown, WV. That reason was the formation of OC JAMS LLC and the birth of OC BikeFest. JAMS partners Rebekah Jones, Mike Alexander, Kathy Micheal and Sutherland (JAMS is the first initial of each last name) unveiled the master plan – bring Delmarva Bike Week back to Ocean City, MD. In 2010, Ocean City Harley-Davidson, owned and operated by the Bennett family (the originators of Delmarva Bike Week and hub of the bike week event), closed its doors. This caused the majority of bike week festivities to move out to Salisbury, MD at Perdue Stadium and WinterPlace Park. At that time, Kathy Micheal, owner of Katancha Corporation specializing in coordinating vendors and providing site management for large-scale events (including HD’s 110th Anniversary site in 2013), received numerous calls from vendors who wanted to remain in Ocean City where the majority of the bike week attendees stayed and played. Micheal had already worked with the other JAMS partners to successfully produce MountainFest Motorcycle Rally each July. It was that relationship that borne the decision to bring their experience, and OC BikeFest, to Ocean City. After lobbying for (and obtaining) the support of Ocean City’s local businesses, Chamber of Commerce and Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association, the Mayor and City Council approved OC BikeFest as an official motorcycle rally and authorized the use of the Inlet and the Convention Center as host locations. From the Mayor’s office to municipal services leaders and staff, everyone worked closely to insure a safe and enjoyable stay for all attendees. For the past two years, the competing events did what they did best and hoped to attract the lion’s share of bikers. Now, in year three, the climate in OC has changed. Although the Bennett family will no longer lead the 13-year event, Sutherland credits the Bennett family for placing the motorcycle community first during the transition. “There would be no Delmarva Bike Week or OC BikeFest without the Bennett family’s vision and hard work,” says Sutherland, “We purchased the event in March and they continue to work with us during the transition. We are excited that rally coordinator, Kerry Mendenhall, is staying on. Kerry is well respected and shares the same vision as us.” Ocean City’s professionalism and appreciation of the event is also made clear. For instance, attendees can now choose to move around Ocean City in a more laid-back manner. Event wristbands or tickets allow attendees 21

ROLLING WITHTHE BIG DOGS Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway

Finally, riding weather is upon us! Chilly you say? Maybe a little, but this is the type of weather that makes wearing all of your leather and protective gear really feel good! Usually when you find warm pockets of air in the valleys, one is tempted to peel off some of the layers until it starts getting chilly again. These are my favorite riding conditions because riders are encouraged to use all that expensive gear they buy for protection from the elements and the road! On the east coast, our favorite “opening season” long ride is the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway Run! My wife and I have ridden tens of thousands of miles and when it comes to the central east coast, this is the most fun and scenic we’ve found. There are other gem lengths of road to be sure, but for distance riders like us, this run has it all. As usual, most of our Dog Runs start somewhere near the Annapolis/ Baltimore/Washington D.C. area but you can pick this route up anywhere along the way! I’ve broken this Run up into three parts with three lengths each. Each length averages between 110-130 miles. This is the comfortable maximum distance a small cruiser gas tank will go and believe me when I tell you there will be other stops along the way! In order to stay away from the heavy traffic of the metro area, we like to ride out east on Rt. #100 to Rt. #29 north and catch a 30 mile stint of I-70 west to Frederick before jumping south onto Rt. #340 all the way to Front Royal.

Run Distance: 360 miles. 110 miles at highway speeds, 110 miles at 35 mph & 130 miles at 45 mph Approximate Time: Google maps says just under 9 ½ hrs. via car. Taking our time to enjoy the ride, stopping to eat once (in Front Royal), stretch and take pictures (3-4 times), and fueling up 2 times after the initial fill, it took us approx. 13 hrs. to make the enjoyable trip! Stop and smell the roses, or mark your territory! Type of Roads: A little highway but mostly rural, parkland roads. Very twisty and winding with easy turns. Nothing too aggressive since the speed limit inhibits any kind of wild cornering. Primary Roads: #100, I-70, Rt. #340, Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway. Elevations: Starting close to sea level and climbing to 3300 ft. brings and array of temps so plan accordingly. Great for leathers and peeling layers as you go. Check the forecast; it can rain at high elevations and not in the valleys or vice versa. As always, plan for the worst and hope for the best!

Normally we’ll eat breakfast and fuel up before hitting Skyline Drive. Keep in mind that Skyline Drive is a national park that charges $10 per bike for a 7 day pass. In case you are not aware, the entire length of Skyline Drive is 35 mph! Sounds boring? Don’t worry; there will be times when you’ll be glad it is this way. There are many turn offs with breath taking views worth stopping to snap some pictures. There are also many tight curves, hikers, bicyclists, wild life and yes, “cagers” sharing the road with you so watch out for each other. From end to end, Skyline Drive is 110 miles long. When you reach the end, you’ll have to pay close attention to the signs pointing you toward Waynesboro. If you head east on I-64 to the second exit, you’ll find food & fuel. Get back on the Blue Ridge Parkway now and open it up to a blistering 45 mph now! It will seem much faster but you will need to be just as cautious with the turns and sights! Deer, wild turkeys, and even an occasional black bear are not unheard of in these parts so keep your senses about you, especially when you pull over at a desolate vista point. Bears can be very curious creatures and they must be kept at a distance! By the time you roll 120-130 miles, you’ll quickly find yourself in Roanoke. This little “BIG” city has a lot to offer so stay the night, get some rest, and plan for an early start for part II of III in the June issue!

Let the Bike Nights begin! The weather has warmed up and the pipes are getting louder as the 2013 riding season starts off with a bang in the Star City - Roanoke, Virginia. On Friday, April 12th, the festivities included a frozen tee shirt contest with special guest MC Steve Curtiss (Cannon). The tee shirts were donated by THE SHOP in Salem. The prizes were donated by Biker Trends and Hopar’s Cycles. Starphotos, Two Wheel Mafia, Inked Diamonds Girls, Captain Mango w/La Diabla and Rocky Top Karaoke were rockin’ the house. On Saturday, April 13th, the festivities included a beer garden area, Corn Hole, and food and drink specials. Rocky Top Karaoke KJ/DJ Eddie rocked the house with dance music and karaoke. StarPhotos, Two Wheel Mafia, Inked Diamond Girls, Captain Mango w/La Diabla were also visiting. It is finally spring and the end of the 2012-2013 legislative session. This year we sponsored two bills: The helmet modification bill and handicapped tags for motorcycles. Thanks to Senator Brian Frosh, our helmet bill remains in a desk drawer, never given the opportunity to go before the committee for a vote. Be assured that ABATE will continue to fight for helmet freedom of choice each year until we have success. Thirty-one states now have freedom of choice and we would like Maryland to be the 32nd. It will take lots of work and we will need lots of members and motorcyclists to participate in the fight. Be prepared next year to respond to the call for action. We did have one big success this year - HB374/SB212 (handicapped tags for motorcycles bill) has passed the House and Senate and will now go to the Governor for signature. It will become effective Oct. 1st, 2013. This will allow motorcyclists to have two handicap tags for their motorcycles along with a hard tag and placard for their cages. Thanks so much to Senator Edwards, Delegate Jim Malone, and Senator Shank for sponsoring these bills and for all of their support. We would also like to thank Lt. Governor Anthony Brown for his support and encouragement to the committee and Chairman to let the bill come to a vote and get out of
