Rolling Thunder. FLBD fully supports this event and encourages each and every reader and rider to consider participation. There is no charge to participate and you do not need to be a member of Rolling Thunder to participate. In a nutshell, for the past 27 years, the Rolling Thunder organization has organized and executed this powerful demonstration to keep a promise to past and present MIA/ POWs - We will NEVER FORGET you. We come from a long line of military and Caroline’s grandson, Davidson, is currently serving and at the time this is being penned, Davidson is “on call” to be deployed. We’ve said it before but it deserves saying again – in the worst case scenario, which we pray never happens, we are most grateful that Rolling Thunder exists as the voice of those who are not here to speak on their own behalf. So be sure to hook up with one of the multitude of groups throughout each state on Sunday, May 25th, to ride and support this very important event. Information is available in this issue of FLBD which is wrapped around Rolling Thunder or, for additional information, visit www.rollingthunder1.com.

different that we all crave. Don’t get us wrong – we love attending and participating in those annual events like Delmarva Bike Week, Apple Mountain, Gettysburg Bike Week, White Rose Thunder, etc. But in between, there are those up and coming events and bike nights that you need to be told about. We also have Hub City Bike Week in Hagerstown, MD/Washington County, July 3 thru 6. This year there are a multitude of venues and some pretty incredible food, drink, entertainment and riding through some of western Maryland’s most scenic routes. Visit our website at www.flbdelmarva.com for up-to-date details. We look forward to seeing you all again this season.

Hopefully you’ve been able to log some real riding time by now. We can tell by the many emails we’ve received that you are anxious to know our schedule for the 2014 season. Seems that the word is out that when FLBD is in the house there’s always a good (yet safe) time. We’ve been busier than ever scouring the local Delmarva area searching for that little something

THOMAS G. BENDER

Name: National Chairman of Government and Veteran Affairs for Rolling Thunder® National, Inc. Location: Clinton • NJ Age: 66

Senior Moments

Tom Bender was born in Somerville, NJ but has lived in Clinton for the past 25 years. He began riding in the US Army in An Khe, Vietnam in 1968-1969 while serving with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) Advisory Team 42. He had many friends among the Vietnamese soldiers that the MACV advised. One of his friends had a motorcycle that Tom was occasionally permitted to borrow. Once that option was no longer available, he stopped riding and didn’t get back on a bike again until 1999 when he bought a 99 Heritage Softtail Classic. It didn’t take long for Tom to get the riding bug and last year he purchased a 2012 Road King that he will use for longer trips in the near future. Tom is a member of Rolling Thunder® Inc. and participates in many charity rides in addition to the Rolling Thunder® Inc. demonstration in DC over Memorial Day weekend. As National Chairman of Government and Veteran Affairs, Tom arranges visits for members of the 99 chapters to meet with their US Representatives and US Senators during Rolling Thunder® Inc.’s Annual Conference in DC. He prepares message points to be presented to members of both Houses of Congress along with issues specific to each chapter. He is proud of the fact that more than one million riders participated in the demonstration in 2013. Tom started his career as a machinist and also worked in heavy construction as a project superintendent. He moved on to work in the housing industry and for 6 years he worked for a Japanese Trading Company at 1 World Trade Center in NYC developing new business for import. His favorite rides are along either side of the Delaware River, Skyline Drive and the Tail of the Dragon. Tom is a man committed to reaching goals and following through. “I have no need for fictional heroes,” says Tom. “My real life heroes are my brothers and sisters who served.” Fast Lane Biker Magazine would like to personally thank Tom for his service and for his role in Rolling Thunder® Inc.

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director Maryland’s legislative session is finally over and it was a long 90 days. Unfortunately, the helmet modification bill never came out of committee and the motorcycle only checkpoint bill was also stuck in committee. We were repeatedly told by James Malone, chair of transportation committee and also vice chair of environmental matters committee, not to worry. But at the last minute, it held in committee. We feel this may have been influenced by the Maryland State Police. We had more than enough votes in both committees to pass the bill. You never know who your friends are in Annapolis and this is proof. You can bet your rear that we will be putting these bills in again next session. We will not give up. On a good note, ABATE testified against an ATV bill which would have made it mandatory for you to wear a helmet on an ATV on your own private property. This means law enforcement could come onto your private property to enforce it. Thank heavens that bill died. We will be watching for it again next session. We have been busy in the motorcycle community meeting with various clubs and organizations to spread ABATE’s message concerning the

11

rights of motorcyclists. We recently met with the Maryland Coalition of Clubs and were very well received. We are happy that we now have a coalition in this state. Several members and myself were invited to a round robin held by motorcycle clubs in Baltimore City where we were also well received. We were very grateful to them both for inviting us to attend. One of our seasoned (won’t say old) members recently asked a member of an organization who invited us to their meeting, “Why is today different? We came and met with you years back and nothing came of it.” She gave a great answer. She said, “Today is a different day. Things are different. Motorcyclists are sick of being profiled. They are sick of being pulled over by law enforcement just because they are on a motorcycle, riding with a club or wearing their colors. They are sick of going to a blessing of the bikes in Calvert County and having SWAT teams walk through with their fingers on the triggers of AKs intimidating them. Motorcyclists are just sick and tired of their rights being infringed upon.” We agree - it is a different time. It is time to stand up for yourselves and do something about it. That is why we are here. We are here to stand up for you. Become an ABATE member and together we can face the different day with a different result.

Joe’s Grog House • Port Deposit, MD Riding season has officially opened! The weather is great, the days are longer and bugs are hitting my face at a ridiculous pace. I’m sure many of you have the same problem. I personally don’t have a windshield because I like open air feeling while riding but I admit, those bugs can really mess up your sun glasses. I wore my gray hoodie out riding the other day and was reminded why most of us wear black. Oh well, (bug) shit happens – but at least the trip was worth it. This month my ride took me to Port Deposit, MD where we rolled into Joe’s Grog House on Main Street. This little hole in the wall was a great surprise. I first noticed the stone brick walls, long bar and the very friendly wait staff. I was seated at a table in front of four plasma TVs. Behind me in a corner there were three leather couches with a huge framed American flag. The decor in this place was great. In the next room, there is an extension of the bar and a pool table. Once I finished taking in the lay of the land, I focused on my mission - eating and drinking. The $3.50 drafts special caught my eye but after ordering my beer, I saw a different drink on the daily drink specials, blackberry brandy and Red Bull. My interest peaked. Whoever thought of this drink should be given an award. I was instantly hooked and treated myself to a few – but was careful not to go over my limit and, yes, I made it home safe.

But let’s talk about the food. Joe’s had some great food. The theme of the night for me was “over-indulgence.” I scarfed down the free chips and salsa, moved to some crab soup, had Joe’s barbeque trio, and finished with a brownie sundae. I was about 3 pounds heavier by the time I left, but it was worth it. The chips were generic. The soup had a great creamy base with room for more crab, but overall it was good. My main course came with ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and a side of mashed potatoes. The ribs fell off the bone, the pulled pork was flavor full and the brisket was juicy. All were covered in a mild, spicy barbeque sauce that was lip smacking to say the least. I have no clue how I made room for the brownie sundae but I ordered it and made it magically disappeared. The food at Joe’s was very satisfying. Add the great atmosphere, drink specials, and friendly staff and it makes my “highly recommended” list. It’s a great hole in the wall place to grab a few drinks and great food. So if you are cruising in Maryland, stop by Joe’s Grog House, 26 South Main Street in Port Deposit, MD. If you have any questions or comments, or if you know a biker-friendly eatery you’d like to recommend, send your contact information to jay@flbdelmarva. com. Until next time remember - it’s just another day in paradise.

Amanda took her first motorcycle ride at a family reunion when she was just 8 years old. That short ride on the back of her uncle’s bike changed her life forever. “The wind, the sound, the feeling of complete freedom, I loved it. Born and raised in Hagerstown, MD, Amanda now resides in the mountains of Hedgesville, WV. She is a stay-at-home mom to 3 beautiful little girls and enjoys the challenges of running her home and caring for her active family. Her husband, Matt, served in the USMC 2001-2005 and did two combat tours in Iraq with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. Amanda is a steadfast supporter of all men and women who serve in the military as well as a committed supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. When not relishing the peacefulness of their Sleepy Hollow home, Amanda relaxes to any music with a true rock and roll vibe. Fast Lane Biker Magazine thanks Amanda for her continued support of our military and salutes her husband Matt for his service.

TIDEWATER GRILLE When Ralph Shapot purchased his brand new Road King Classic in 1999 from Smaltz’s Harley Davidson in Eagle, Pennsylvania, the then-owner of Smaltz’s, “Stretch”, invited Ralph to travel with Eagle HOG to DC to participate in the Rolling Thunder demonstration. Stretch, by the way, was perhaps the most enthusiastic HD shop owner and HD proponent he had ever met. He was a great guy - a class act. The ride to and return from the Wall in 1999 was the first of several Rolling Thunder trips he made. They left Smaltz’s HD early that morning with about 50-60 motorcycles and a police escort. It was already warm and probably THE hottest Rolling Thunder trip he ever experienced. Once they arrived in DC, they parked in a huge parking area and waited. Then lined up and waited. Finally the demonstration proceeded ever so slowly through town. Ralph’s left hand cramped from laying off and on the clutch, and sweat poured down his face and back. But, according to Ralph, it was simply a great feeling – just as great as visiting the Wall and all of the monuments. Ralph recalls parking his bike (new at the time) with the back tire against the curb. He didn’t realize how high the curb was and put his very first scratch on a tail pipe when he leaned the bike on its stand. They ate, drank, and walked around seeing as much as they could before meeting at a predetermined location for the return home. Going home, Ralph followed what was left of their group. They pulled off I-95 and headed into Havre de Grace, MD on route 155. They headed down to the water and parked right along the Susquehanna River. It was then that he noticed the restaurant on the water, the Tidewater Grille. Ralph had a super meal and enjoyed a spectacular view. He returned to the restaurant often over the years. Several years later, Ralph left his corporate job of 30+ years and decided to purchase a small bar. He pursued many of the available bars/ restaurants in PA with none panning out. On a whim, he called a broker in Havre de Grace who had a listing for a small bar with a large restaurant. It was more than Ralph wanted to invest, but he couldn’t resist this opportunity of a lifetime. He cashed in his 401K and bought the place in September 2007. Why? You guessed it! It was the Tidewater Grille. The Tidewater Grille is located at 300 Franklin St, Havre de Grace, MD. For more information, visit www.thetidewatergrille.com.

Over the many years that you have all been reading my columns you have no doubt heard me bitch and moan about not having enough liability coverage, and naturally enough uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage as you can only buy uninsured/underinsured coverage up to the amount of your limits of liability coverage (i.e. if you bought $15,000/$30,000.00 in liability coverage, that is all you can purchase in UM/UIM coverage). The only way you can have more UM/UIM coverage than liability is if you have more than one bike on the policy and purchase the stacking option, which is something I always recommend even if you only have one bike.

who make roughly between $25,000.00 - $70,000.00 a year. It also gives anyone injured in a Pennsylvania or New Jersey motorcycle accident peace of mind when they are wondering how they are going to pay for all of the medical bills. So please, if you do not have health insurance, get on a computer, type in “healthinsurance.gov” and get started! Best of all, you can not be turned down due to pre-existing conditions and it will also cover your children until they are 26 years old. It is a win-win situation – so do it now!

As always, if upon reading this material you have any questions regarding this topic or any others, please feel I have also been complaining about how many of my clients free to contact me at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or do not have health insurance and unless you purchased some 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352). medical coverage on your motorcycle policy, have no way of paying your medical bills if you are injured in a motorcycle accident. Contrary to what many people believe, when you Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only “Cycle Attorney” are involved in a motorcycle accident your automobile carrier will not pay for your medical bills and neither will the other insurance carrier. Even if they do assume responsibility, they will only pay when the case settles, but by then you will likely be in collections. Up until recently there was nothing for most people to do about this. However, now with the creation of “healthcare. gov”, virtually anyone who does not qualify for public assistance, can now get health insurance coverage for a very reasonable amount. It may not be “platinum” coverage, but with the papers reporting over 7-8 million new members, it will go far in making sure you get treated in the hospital, and more importantly, get the continued medical care you need once you are released from the hospital. This is not always easy to do. Most specialists and medical facilities want to know how they are getting paid before they will even schedule an appointment. Just so you understand, once you are released from the hospital, in most situations, medical providers do not have to treat you. Currently, as a result of “Obamacare”, the percentage of Americans without insurance has fallen to its lowest level in 6 years. “Obamacare” is especially helpful to bikers in PA and NJ as they often do not make enough money to buy insurance from the health insurance companies directly, and make too much to qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. The “Obamacare” plan comes with government subsidies that help keep the cost down for those

veryday Meet Everyday Hero:

tsgt William Lanehart eroes 108th aw/lrs njang

H

M uch like his years in the service, TSgt William Lanehart has gained training, experience, sat-

isfaction and miles under his belt through riding. He joined the Air Force in 1994 as a KC-10 crew chief assigned to McGuire AFB, NJ. He was privileged to fly several sorties with the aircrew and assist with TDY maintenance activities all over the world. He has visited locations ranging from Israel to Shanghai, China and served active duty for 6 years before joining the NJANG in 2002. TSgt Lanehart’s home station remains McGuire AFB for over 18 years and he is now an E6 (Technical Sergeant) Logistics Manager in the 108th Air Wing Logistics Readiness Squadron. TSgt Lanehart began riding in 2006 to save gas used in his one hour commute. He purchased a Yamaha Majesty (scooter) and breezed through all the mandatory base training and state licensing requirements to ride on a military installation. He covered a lot of ground and obtained a great deal of riding experience but apparently not enough. He had his first accident on New Year’s Day, 2008. TSgt Lanehart was hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital for five days. After recovery, he decided to purchase a Vulcan 900C, but soon craved more size and horsepower so traded the Vulcan for a 2008 Honda VTX-1300C. This bike gave TSgt Lanehart a greater depth of riding experience than before and re-enforced his desire to travel by long distance riding. His best ride was from NJ up to Rt. 6 out to Sandusky, OH. Last year, he traded his ride again for a 2010 Goldwing and also purchased a 2010 Ninja ZX-14. His cruiser is for distance and his rocket is for speed. TSgt Lanehart’s travels took him through Deals Gap where he rode the Dragon’s Tail and saw the Tree of Shame. He recently rode to Chicago to see his parents. This Everyday Hero loves to ride! FLBD salutes TSgt Lanehart and thanks him for his service.
