FLBD is proud to dedicate our May issue to Rolling Thunder, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to educating the public with respect to the many American Prisoners of War/Missing In Action. Since its start in 1988 when 2,500 veterans and supporters answered a call to action, Rolling Thunder has grown to include 90 chapters and approximately 900,000 supporters participate in the annual demonstration held on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Included in this issue is the Rolling Thunder itinerary and other pertinent information that will be helpful if you are planning to attend the demonstration. We have highlighted noteworthy members whenever possible in our monthly articles. If you have never participated in the Rolling Thunder demonstration ride you should plan to do so. You do not need to be a member of Rolling Thunder to participate in the ride - just show up. We would like to thank Rolling Thunder, Inc., the many participants and particularly, Nancy Regg, Media Chairperson for Rolling Thunder, Inc., for their input, service and tenacity. For more information, history, statistical information and more, visit www.rollingthunder1.com.

ASK THE ATTORNEY BY: LEE D. GABER, ESQUIRE •

1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com www.cycleattorney.com This months column deals with a question that I am inevitably asked by every client at some point during their case and that is ….. “How much is my case worth, and approximately how long will it take to resolve?” The answers to these questions are linked because the length of the claim will be affected by the type of injuries, the amount that my client is seeking to recover and of course the amount that the other parties insurance company is willing to offer. The question as to value is often asked early in the claim and as such, usually I am unable to give an estimate at that time, unless the injury and the treatment are obvious and objective in nature. In other words … if I have a client who has suffered a fracture of his or her arm or leg that required surgery, I can usually give a relatively accurate estimate as to the value of that claim assuming that the injury goes on to heal without any major complications such as infection or a nonunion of the broken bones. If either or these complications occur, then an estimate as to the value of that injury becomes more difficult, until I am able to assess the full extent of the injury.

assumes that the injuries are all known, the treatment has been completed and my office is in possession of all of the necessary documentation to prove the loss. Once in possession of these proofs, we forward this material to the insurance company as quickly as possible in order to obtain an expeditious resolution for all of our clients. I hope this answers this commonly asked question and as always, I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney. com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only “Cycle Attorney”

It is also important to remember, that the recovery for any injury will be limited by the amount of available insurance coverage. As discussed before, in most cases, regardless of the severity of the injury, you will only be able to recover the amount of insurance that is available to the person who caused your injury plus any underinsured motorist coverage that you have purchased on your motorcycle or in the rare case, your automobiles. I know there are some attorney’s out there that will give high estimates and/or promise large recoveries in order to insure that they sign up a client however, I will not give wild estimates or make promises that I can not keep simply to guarantee that a client will retain my office to represent them. Fortunately, most cases do not require the filing of a lawsuit, and dependant upon the severity of the injury, will settle within approximately one year. But, that

Senior Moments

Bill Turkus began riding a Zundap at the age of 17. Since then he has owned a variety of bikes including a Honda 90 S, Yamaha Big Bear Scrambler for the dirt, a Catalina and a Honda 750 Super Sport. When he finally could afford a HarleyDavidson he purchased a new 1979 Low Rider. Since then he always owned 2 bikes - a Harley and a BMW GS. His passion for riding continued through an 1100 GS, an 1150 GS and he now owns a BMW 1200 GS and a 2014 HD Ultra Limited.

BILL TURKUS

MONROE TWP., NJ • 71 YEARS and took over 9 weeks. His second longest was from NJ to LA to Washington State and back home. He entered the HOG ABC’s of Touring and placed 2nd. “I would have done better if I attended the HOG events,” says Bill, “but I was more interested in the ride than the party.” Bill and his wife, Uta, have been together for over 13 years. She enjoys riding back seat, taking pictures and acting as Bill’s second set of eyes as they travel all over the US and Canada. They met through sharing common interests on the internet which led to talk about their mutual desire to travel by motorcycle. Their first ride ended in a downpour but it has been sunshine ever since. When asked what words of wisdom he would like to pass on to new or inexperienced riders, Bill says, “Learn to ride! Get in a lot of seat time. Take a course to start! Take more classes as you progress. Read MC magazines. Hang out with other riders, listen to their tales and learn from them. Maintain your machine and yourself. Ride your own ride. Don’t let others get you to do things you are not ready for or beyond your level of experience.” Now that’s some good wisdom!

Bill joined the US Army Reserves in 1966 and completed his service in 1972 as an E-6. He was stationed at Fort Polk, Fort Knox and Fort Dix. He works part time as a plumber and also teaches school 2 days each week. He is a founding member of the Rider Education of New Jersey Program and has been teaching since its inception 26 years ago. He is currently a Rider Coach as well as a Rider Coach Trainer. Bill feels blessed to have been able to ride in the Rolling Thunder demonstration from the first year. Most years he can be found in the parking lot selling pins and patches. He is part of Rolling Thunder NJ and has participated in many charity rides over the years. He was active in ABATE and supported and lobbied for the Rider Education Bill, the Handicap License Plate for Motorcyclist Bill and the Fair Weather Riding Act. Bills favorite ride is US 12 in Utah and the road from Ourey, CO to Silverton, CO. His most memorable ride is to Alaska, British Columbia and the Yukon. Day trips take him to 611 in PA but, according to Bill, “It’s not the destination, but how I get there.” His ride to Alaska was over 14,000 miles

Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse Service Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse Service, established in 2009, is owned and operated by Stewart Sadler of Milford, DE. The service provided by Sadler is a unique and personal way to say farewell to a friend or loved one. It offers one last ride that will be remembered and cherished and create a lasting impression on those left behind. Hand crafted with attention to detail, Sadler’s hearse is second to none. The glass-sided caisson is perfect for showing the pride of the Military, Police, Fireman, or any first responder who has earned our nation’s flag. The hearse is equipped to safely transport anything from oversized caskets to uniquely-shaped urns. The trike itself is built from a 2009 HarleyDavidson Road King with modifications to handle the task of hauling the weight of the hearse and the casket. Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse Service works with the family and the funeral home to accommodate your loved one’s final wishes. Special requests such as riding by a home or clubhouse are honored to the best of their ability. Past requests have included riding by a favorite bar, passing by a bike dealership, cruising down a favorite road, and even riding by their work place. If the client and their funeral director are in agreement, Sadler is on board to make it happen if it is at all possible. In the event there is no funeral home involved and the service rests solely on family members, Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse Service also provides memorial rides. The urn can be placed safely in the hearse and the memorial ride will proceed as directed by the family. Sadler plans to add an arc to more prominently display and transport your loved one’s urn. Memorial rides have included processions to the beach for a ceremony and ash scattering by the family and also a bar-hopping celebration of a loved one’s life as an alternative to mourning the loss. Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse Service is equipped to travel to any location. The fully-enclosed trailer enables Sadler to transport the Hearse to wherever service is required. Sadler is a retired veteran who served in the US Air Force for 22 years. He is currently employed as a boat captain with the Delaware Bay Launch Service. For more information, contact Stewart Sadler by phone at (302) 632-9978, on the web by visiting www.delmarvamotorcyclehearse.com, or via Facebook by searching Delmarva Motorcycle Hearse.

Fuddruckers Riding season has officially arrived so no more excuses not to get out and ride. Unless, of course, you dragged your feet and have yet to prep your bike! Now I’ll admit that I’m in that category, but luckily all she needs is a thorough wash. I’m not too worried about that since she’ll only get dirty again anyway - she’s no show queen. As most of you know, I typically like to hit the mom-and-pop eateries but this month I decided on a chain restaurant. It happens from time to time and this place caught my eye. That’s how I found myself at Fuddruckers who claim to have the world’s best burgers. I decided to judge for myself.

cafeteria-style ordering, but it isn’t bad for a quick and friendly stop-in, grab-a-bite kind of thing. Fuddruckers has multiple locations so you can find one just about anywhere when you are in the mood for a good burger. For now my preference is still a mom-and-pop eatery that offers more bang for the buck. If you want to check out Fuddruckers, you can find a location close to you at www.fuddruckers.com. Not all locations have the exotic burgers, so check before you head out. Until next time, remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

First, don’t expect to be seated when you walk in. I stood in a cafeteria-type line, viewing the menus off to the side and also overhead. There is a variety of burger options including, elk, buffalo and wild boar. Sides include the typical fries, onion rings, wedge fries and baked beans. By the time I reached the counter, my decision was made and I ordered the Works Burger, medium rare, with a side of wedges. Fuddruckers does serve beer but I decided to pass due to a little over indulgence the night before - and resulting stomach issues. This is also why I stuck with a basic burger and not one of the exotics. I didn’t want to waste money, so to speak. Once the order process is complete, you get one of those buzzers except instead of letting you know it is time to be seated, it tells you when your food is done. It didn’t take long to be buzzed and once I picked up my burger, I was off to the salad bar. There you will find the basic toppings - lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapenos, pickles, ketchup, mayo, mustard, nacho cheese, barbeque sauce and pretty much anything you would want as a topping. Now as chain restaurants go, this place was pretty cool. The burger was good; nothing exceptional but what you would expect from this type of chain. My order was what I asked for - a medium rare burger with all the toppings. The bun was toasted and the wedge fries were good. I am not a fan of self-serve or

A Maryland lawyer, advocate & biker who gives back to the community Jay “Honorable” Block is your friendly neighborhood lawyer who has been practicing law in Maryland for almost 40 years. He has also been riding motorcycles for more than 30 years and managed to do what most of us can only dream of - bringing both passions together and representing a large portion of the local Maryland motorcycle community. When Jay isn’t practicing law, you will find him at a meeting or a function, volunteering his time to counsel others with legal issues. He donates free time to various not-for-profit and charitable groups, organizing them to operate in the State of Maryland. For 30 years, Jay has represented ABATE of Maryland as its attorney. As a volunteer attorney with the Maryland Defendant Force (MDDF), Jay serves as a Major in the Judge Advocate Corps, whose purpose is to assist members of the military and their families with legal issues not covered by the Judge Advocate General’s Office. He also volunteers with the Homeless Persons Representation Project and provides assistance and direction to homeless veterans applying for much-needed benefits who have not been successful doing so on their own. Jay is a Shrine Mason. He became a Shriner just to ride his motorcycle in parades to promote awareness and show support for the goals of the Shriners - raising funds for the Children’s Hospitals so they can continue to offer specialized care to children who suffer medical issues that include orthopedic conditions, burns and spinal cord injuries, regardless of the family’s ability to pay. It was after his first visit to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, where he met with children undergoing various treatments, that Jay decided he needed to become more involved. Two of Jay’s proudest accomplishments are, first, becoming a Master of his Lodge and, second, becoming the 2013 Illustrious Potentate of the Baltimore Boumi Shriners. As testament to his commitment to Shriners, Jay added a limited edition 2011 Shriner Harley Davidson Ultra Glide to his collection of motorcycles. Jay’s main office is in Baltimore County with several offices throughout Maryland. He is known to go to client’s homes or visit them in the hospital, doing whatever it takes to insure the needs of his clients are met. Kir k S. Lippold

• Commander, USN (Ret)

Inspirational Leadership Speaker & Consultant

1. How long have you been involved with your occupation? I retired from the U.S. Navy in 2007 and have worked as a professional speaker for almost eight years. After my retirement, I wanted to be involved with real, meaningful work that would make a difference. The desire to teach people about leadership set me on the path I enjoy today. 2. What do you do in that capacity? I was the Commanding Officer of USS Cole (DDG 67) when Al Qaeda terrorists attacked it on October 12, 2000 in the port of Aden, Yemen. Widely viewed as one the most brazen acts of terrorism before the 9/11 attacks, I was blessed with a great crew who proved themselves to be true heroes when they saved their ship from sinking and their shipmates from dying in the aftermath of the attack. When I retired, it was apparent that the leadership foundation I built for my crew would be beneficial to businesses throughout the country. Using the attack on the ship as a backdrop, I discuss five key leadership pillars – integrity, vision, personal accountability, trusting and investing in your people, and professional competence – and show how the foundation of those pillars allowed my crew, in a defining moment in our nation’s history, to prove their mettle in the crucible of combat. While most businesses will hopefully never face consequences as dire as what we encountered, a solid foundation of leadership skills for people will allow businesses to focus more of their effort on their core mission of providing people with a service or product that is the best possible in their field of expertise. 3. What do you like/admire most about yourself? My ability to persevere to achieve goals I set for myself is probably what I am most proud of and is my strongest trait. 4. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? I would like to spend more time helping others achieve their own personal and professional goals. 5. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? When I took command of USS Cole, I made a promise to myself that during the ship’s deployment, I would purchase a lifelong goal – a Harley Davidson. I spent

several years before taking command traveling to the Harley Davidson factory in York, Pennsylvania to test drive the various models and knew exactly which one I wanted. While operating in the Mediterranean before our transfer to the Middle East, I ordered my motorcycle – a custom painted FXDWG Wide Glide. Following the attack, I debated if I should cancel the order given what had just transpired in my life. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that despite the tragedy, God had blessed me with a life I still needed to live and I followed through to purchase the extravagance of my life – my motorcycle. I still ride it today and am a proud member of Rolling Thunder! 6. Where would you most like to reside if you could? I am still debating where I want to reside when I finally decide to slow down and take life easy. I’m too busy having fun so that decision is, thankfully, years into my future. 7. Who is your fictional hero? Easy question – Captain James T. Kirk, Commanding Officer of the USS Enterprise! 8. Who do you consider your real life hero? The veterans who served to protect and defend our country and way of life. 9. What is the most awesome thing you own? I love the memories of growing up with two wonderful parents and my sister, Kelly. 10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Question: How did you survive that terrible attack on your ship? Answer: When you join the military regardless of your branch of service, you dedicated your life to train, hope, and pray that you never have to face a life-or-death moment. In my case, it happened. Blessed with a great crew, they were my complete focus throughout that tragic event. They survived the attack, saved their ship from sinking (on more than one occasion), and saved their wounded shipmates from dying. While I may have been the sole accountable officer as their captain, they were my inspiration to keep going through some very dark hours and days. We survived that event as a crew and we did it together. I will always be proud of each and every one of them. 11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Other than a naval officer, I would like to be an architect. I love the freedom to design structures that are beautiful in appearance, functional in design, and reflect the unique nature of the individuals who live and work in them. 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? The President of the United States. There is so much work that needs to be done for the good of the nation and our future. In that brief 24-hour period, I would work my absolute hardest to focus the American people and set our country on a path for success to guarantee our freedom and security for the future. 13. What would you do if you were able to retire? I would love to travel throughout the United States and see every corner and aspect of our country during every season of the year. I want to experience first-hand the people that make up the fabric of who we are as a nation. There are so many natural and manmade wonders that exist that it would definitely take up the rest of my life! FLBD thanks Kirk Lippold for his service and continued contributions to our nation. by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director The 2015 legislative session has finally ended and it was a successful session for ABATE and all motorcyclists. Together we were able to work 4 bills of our own and support two bills that are not ABATE bills. The motorcycle-only checkpoint bill passed unanimously both in the House and Senate - almost an unheard of feat. This bill prevents law enforcement from pulling over only motorcyclists at a checkpoint. The profiling bill went unanimous through the Senate but died in the House due to the Chairman not bringing the bill out for a vote. We are confident that had it been brought to vote, it would have also cleared the House. It will be reintroduced next session. Prince George delegation introduced a bill proposing doubled fines only imposed on motorcyclists who exceed the posted speed limit more than 40 miles. The fine would have been increased from $500 to $1000 and imposed on bikers only. This is an obvious example of profiling and ABATE of Maryland addressed this with the bill’s sponsor. We are happy to say the bill was dropped - another huge success! A bill we did support introduced by the Prince George delegation was to provide for EMTs to use motorcycles as a response vehicle. It would allow for reduced response time to the scene of an accident because motorcycles can more easily navigate through traffic and up the side of the road. Unfortunately, due to expenses involved in purchasing the motorcycles, this bill was pulled. It will be reintroduced next year with the hope that Harley-Davidson, Honda or another manufacturer will donate a bike. This is a good bill that ABATE would support. The 2015 session was very challenging because of the number of bills and all the new legislators this year. But because of our great members and their dedication to the cause we were able to pull it off. There probably isn’t a legislator in Annapolis who doesn’t know what ABATE is and what we do. This is the first year we partnered with the Maryland Coalition of Clubs and

the US Defenders in a show of unity that enable us to get so much done. Each Monday lobbying night was well attended and we lobbied in large groups. All hearings were organized, our testimony was excellent and our presentations were flawless. Double D and Twitch from Washington State testified on the Profiling bill and they were excellent. ABATE is no longer alone fighting these battles. We have nation-wide support to help us get the job done. MRF is also supporting us as needed. With all these organizations united we are a strong and unbeatable force. ABATE envisions great changes to benefit all motorcyclists in the future. You could not be better represented in Annapolis. ABATE would like to thank all of its members, the entire motorcycle community, COC, COIR, US Defenders and MRF for all of your support during the 2015 legislative session. Your participation and support led to our successes. Because of you we were able to pass an important bill and stop a bad bill. During the 2015 riding season we should continue to support each other by attending each other’s events and organizing our agenda for the next legislative session. Again, thank you and keep up the good work.

Taking the Scenic Route

ROLLING THUNDER® • "RIDE FOR FREEDOM" by Mike “Heritage” Gerjets

Bikers are some of the most patriotic people I know. We collectively maintain a deep respect for the men and women who help preserve the freedoms the citizens of our country enjoy. Furthermore, many of us routinely exhibit our patriotism in the form of flags, patches, and stickers that are easily seen on our bikes, vests, and helmets. I would challenge anyone who might dispute this claim to visit any number of rallies, charity events, or funerals that occur throughout the year and count the number of motorcycles in attendance. As we’re all aware, there are many patriotic events throughout the year, but I’m not aware of any as polarizing as the annual Rolling Thunder “Ride for Freedom” in Washington D.C. Since 1988, bikers from across our great nation have assembled for this peaceful demonstration to bring awareness to the important POW/MIA issue. Beyond exercising our First Amendment rights, Rolling Thunder is also a tremendous way to demonstrate support for our military service members past and present. If you have never ridden in the procession, you should do it at least once and you will understand why I believe this is one of the most astounding patriotic events in the country. I felt a strong sense of pride as I passed many civilians waving U.S. flags, uniformed military personnel presenting the Colors, and the legendary SSgt Tim Chambers holding his salute until every biker passes. I also felt captivated by the view of the Lincoln Memorial while passing over the Arlington Memorial Bridge, the U.S. Capitol as I cruised down Pennsylvania Avenue, and the close up view of many historic DC buildings throughout the route. I promise you will feel the same way once you participate in this event. Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and ride to new destinations!

Izz Nix Although barely old enough, our May cougar comes to us from her born-and-raised-town of Hagerstown, Maryland. She is also very special to FLBD and we consider her part of our family. Izz Nix was raised by her grandparents, and around Harleys, all of her life. “When I was a little girl I would sneak rides on the back of my grandfather’s Harley. I would sneak because my grandmother would have grounded me for life if she ever found out! It was totally worth it and the best feeling in the world.” As owner and lead photographer at Oktober Hollow Photography in Waynesboro, PA, Izz Nix loves filling her summers with motorcycle shoots. Her work has graced the covers of FLBD on several occasions. She is also an avid writer and dreamer who will tell those close to her, “If ever you can’t find me, don’t worry. I’m just in the clouds.” She is also parent to three beautiful little girls and the wife of a school teacher (whom she loves very much). Izz Nix is 35 years old and, simply, a beautiful person.
