May is a busy month! The Events Calendar is growing. Mother’s Day is May 14th (in case anyone forgot!). Memorial Day weekend brings parades and memorial services for those who have served our country and who are no longer with us. Of course, Rolling Thunder® will organize and execute its 30th Anniversary Ride For Freedom in Washington, DC on May 28th. Some of you might remember from past issues that I come from a long line of military and my grandchildren, Harley and Davidson (no kidding), are currently serving. My father served, his father served, my uncles served - it’s tradition. Walt also served. My granddaughter is the first female to serve and carry on the proud family tradition. However, as a daunting mom-mom, I do have my worries and concerns. I try to temper those concerns by remembering all the servicemen and servicewomen I’ve had the honor and privilege to meet over the past several years. Working closely with Rolling Thunder National I’ve had plenty of opportunity to see first-hand the work this organization does, the patriots it serves, the tireless work of its members, and the neverending dedication to not only the charities Rolling Thunder supports, but also insuring the message, NEVER FORGET, is perpetuated throughout the masses and the generations. Because I have grandchildren serving, I have a deeper appreciation of Rolling Thunder’s mission. I’m glad they are there. I encourage each person to visit www.rollingthunder1.com and learn all you can. Attend a meeting and discuss how you can be part of the mission and how you can support those who protect you. Finally, become a member. It is the membership of the generations that will insure the message of NEVER FORGET survives.

ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator
Once again, the mandatory Helmet Bill, HB 14, has died in Committee thanks to the efforts of ABATE of Delaware, BOLT, and all of the freedom loving bikers who took the time to speak or write to the Committee members. Anyone who thinks emailing your elected officials does no good is obviously wrong. We went up against some heavy hitters like NHTSA, State Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro, several hospitals, and most notably Mid-Atlantic AAA and State Farm. The last two should suffer the loss of all motorcyclists’ business. We are keeping a log of those officials opposing us and will publish it prior to election time. On another note the Auxiliary Lighting Bill, SB 12, passed both Houses and is currently on Governor Carneys’ desk awaiting his signature. Why this hasn’t been signed into law yet is anyone’s guess. This bill will allow the use of ac-

cent lighting on motorcycles, increasing their visibility during the hours of darkness. There are color restrictions, but this is a good first step. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in the State of Delaware and that will be memorialized during “The Ride to the Tide” event at Rommel’s in Smyrna, DE on April 23rd. Members of the Motorcycle Rider Safety Advisory Committee will be there. If you’re planning to attend and see what they are doing for you, or if you have a question or concern, Senator Ennis will read the Governor’s proclamation somewhere around 10:00. Everyday Heroes Sgt. Michael Sulsona Mike Sulsona served as a Marine in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 as a basic rifleman with the 1st Marine Division outside of Da Nang. On January 15, 1971, Sulsona, while patrolling with his squad, ran into an ambush set off by a command detonated land mine. As a result of the explosion Sulsona lost both of his legs high above the knee in addition to sustaining multiple wounds. After receiving last rights three times and nearly a year being hospitalized, Sulsona was discharged honorably. He received a promotion to Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart and distinguished Bronze Star. In the following years, Sgt. Sulsona attended Goddard College where he graduated with honors and a Master’s Degree in Writing. In 1989, he received the prestigious Kennedy Center Award for playwriting, and later appeared in the Academy Award-winning movie, “Born on the Fourth of July,” and in the documentary, “Hearts and Minds.” He also received a national award in non-traditional casting for his play, “Who We Are/ How We Love,” and was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Screenwriting Award for his script, “North of Manila.” His weekly commentary regarding the veteran community can be heard on AM 1480 WLEA / US-UN Report. In his 40-plus years being home, Sgt. Sulsona spent much of his focus on those who suffer from the “invisible wounds.” He served as an advocate for the homeless and for the unregistered veteran. Sgt. Sulsona assists with paperwork, phone calls, keeping appointments and is available 24/7 when needed. Sgt. Sulsona is also a member of Rolling Thunder, The Marine Corps League, The Siller Foundation, and The Crossroads Veterans Forum where his services are to assist all veterans who served at any time, in any war, for any reason, in need of his personal attention. Sgt. Sulsona made national headlines in 2014 when his wheelchair fell apart while visiting his local Lowes. He had requested a replacement from the Veteran’s Administration for several years prior to that incident but, unfortunately, bureaucratic red tape prevented delivery of the much-needed chair. Three Lowes employees put Sgt. Sulsona’s chair back together using their own resources and refused any payment. When the story was picked up nationally, the Office of Veteran Affairs paid attention and promptly delivered Sgt. Sulsona’s chair. Although much appreciated and a happy ending, it did bring about much discussion regarding Veteran’s Administration policy and the difficulty accessing services and medical devices. Back in 2014, I went on a trip to South Korea. I stayed there for 3 weeks and toured much of the country. When I returned, I shared my experiences with my family and friends. A funny thing happened though. Every time I shared my experiences with one of my Korean friends, the response was always the same: “Wow, you have seen more of my country than I have!” Hmmm, that response really opened my eyes. Isn’t it so true for most of us that we all stay in our little area, our own camp, our single point of view? We hardly ever see what’s on the other side, who is there, and what they’re all about. Hello, my name is Marty Sullivan, a.k.a. “SightWorks.” I am a father, husband, motorcyclist, and martial artist. I’ve been Motovlogging since 2011 on YouTube. Since my trip to South Korea in 2014, I started a video series called “Epic Ride.” Epic Ride is where I take 2 or 3 weeks each year and just ride. No matter the weather, the setbacks, or the trials and tribulations, I ride. So far, I have rode to 21 states and some of Canada too. Since starting Epic Ride, my mission has definitely evolved. Instead of just seeing what’s around the next corner or over the next rise, I now use Epic Ride to try and erase all the lines that seem to divide us. I try to erase the “Biker/Crotch Rocket” line, the “Black/White” line, and all the other issues that seem to divide us nowadays. You’d be surprised, what a motorcycle, a smile, and a “hello” can do to change perceptions and erase those lines. So come along with me, there’s so much more to see, and so many lines to erase, I’d love to bring you along!

SUSAN KONOPKA LOCATION: RACINE • WI 76 YEARS
Susan Konopka rode as a passenger in the’60’s and early 70’s with her husband, Steve, on little Hondas. She usually wore shorts, a tank top and sneakers and got a great tan. When the state of Wisconsin enacted a helmet law in the mid-70’s, Steve declared, “No one will tell me I have to wear a helmet, I’LL SELL THE BIKE!” He sold the bike. Twenty years later, Bill had a stroke. During his hospital recovery, Susan talked with him about motorcycles and riding. She told Bill how much she enjoyed riding. This led to the purchase of an ‘83 Honda Gold Wing. She continued to ride as a passenger and would actually read paper-backs and snooze on the back seat. But she knew it was only a matter of time before she rode her own. Susan earned her endorsement and rode on three wheels but thought two wheels would be more fun. She purchased a Suzuki Intruder and began checking out ladies’ motorcycle organizations and joined both Women In the Wind and Women On Wheels. She had so much fun on two wheels she decided to pay forward the joy of riding by becoming a Motorcycle Safety Instructor. She taught motorcycle safety for about ten years, but still rides with WOW and WITW. When an unexpected opportunity came along, Susan, along with two other women riders, purchased the Gold Wing Road Riders Association publication, Women On Wheels. Susan was the Assistant Director of merchandise and they ran it for about 10 years before taking it public. At that time, Susan sat on the Board of Directors and she currently remains a member. Susan also continues to ride with the Milwaukee Chapter of Women In The Wind, Women On Wheels and Rolling Thunder, Wisconsin Chapter 2. This year, Susan is scheduled to do the 25th Anniversary of Run to the Wall, May 25th; WOW Mid-West Rally, Peoria, IL, June 9-11th; WOW International Ride-In, in Colorado Springs, CO, July 4-6th, three week-end rides in August; two week-end rides in September and is flying out to New Hampshire the third week in September. Susan is still employed and will celebrate her 77th birthday in June. “Maybe I should retire,” Susan ponders for just a moment before adding “MAYBE NOT!”

Habanero Guacamole Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner and what better way to enjoy the day than with a cold cerveza and a side of fresh guacamole and chips. The fresh/ripe avocados make this colorful guacamole smooth while the peppers and onions maintain its crispness. Fresh cilantro and lime provide the flavor we often crave and associate with Mexican cuisine. If habaneros are too hot for your taste, not to worry. You can substitute a pepper of your choice or remove the heat all together.
INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a small mixing bowl add your avocado, lime juice, salt and granulated garlic. Mash with a fork until you reach a mushy, smooth consistency resembling mashed potatoes. 2. Add your peppers, onion and cilantro and stir until well mixed. 3. Garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve immediately and enjoy with your favorite chips! **Tip for storage: If you find you need to prepare your guacamole ahead of time or if you need to store it, I find that adding the pit into the container helps preserve freshness a little longer

Washington Harley-Davidson on Saturday, May 27th, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. 1. How long have you been involved with music? My whole life. I can’t remember a time when my life did not revolve around music. 2. What does your occupation entail? Writing and recording music (ten solo albums to date), writing songs for film and television (my song, “Fly Home” was included in a recent episode of the CBS prime-time crime drama, “Criminal Minds”) and writing songs for other artists’ projects. I also own a recording studio where we produce and record albums for other musicians. 3. Where were you born and where do you currently reside? I don’t know where I was born because I was adopted. I currently reside in Nashville, TN and Statesville, NC. 4. What do you like/admire most about yourself? How much I appreciate and love my family. Family first. Always. 5. Everyday Heroes Stacia McDonough Serving Those Who Served You could say that Bedminster, NJ’s Stacia McDonough actively supports Veterans’ rights, Veterans’ services and, well, anything that provides assistance to our Veterans in need. That, however, would be an understatement. Stacia’s undeniable determination and drive is how she became a board member of the prestigious Hope for Veterans Leadership Committee. This 501(c)(3) organization is one of the largest Veterans housing programs. Its mission is to assist ex-servicemen and women who struggle with homelessness rebuild their lives. In 2014, she also served as Chairperson of their annual Flag Day 5k Run.

Stacia is also the person responsible for the annual “They Kept Us Safe, Let’s Keep Them Warm” new clothing collection and food drive, benefiting formerly homeless Veterans housed at the Hope For Veterans facility in Lyons, NJ. New clothing is gift wrapped and hand-delivered to Veterans in need prior to Christmas Eve. From humble beginnings in 2011, this event is now a year-long drive and has harvested support of large corporations such as New Jersey-based medical device giant, Zimmer Biomet. The success of the clothing and food drive has been significant enough to warrant the formation of “The Veterans’ Shepherds,” a nonprofit organization focusing on the necessities (new clothing, food, household goods, etc.) needed by homeless Veterans. The ultimate goal is to open a food/new clothing pantry which caters to Veterans in need and to promote the needs of Veterans and their families, keeping them in the forefront. Stacia is a Gold Star Wife and staunch advocate for our Veterans. She was inspired by her late husband, John E. McDonough, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. John, the consummate patriot, enlisted, and served “In Country.” “John was pure of soul,” says Stacia. “I could live for eternity and the indescribable heartbreak of losing him would never diminish. That man hung the moon.” As of winter, 2016, Stacia became a proud member of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. “The members are exceptional people who always go the extra mile to help those in need,” Stacia explains. “They truly pour their hearts and souls into everything they do. REMEMBERING OUR MILITARY If you are a veteran or active military, thank you for fighting for our freedom! You and your families sacrifice so much for us. Words alone cannot properly express this gratitude but Rolling Thunder’s mission, and the participants in the annual demonstration, insure those sacrifices are never forgotten. Because of the extraordinary efforts of Rolling Thunder, on May 28th the Pentagon parking lot will be filled with hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists gathered together to bring awareness to our missing soldiers. The Department of Defense must be listening because progress is still being made. According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, 264 Vietnam MIA military personnel have been accounted for since 2004. The latest four were added in March of this year and the remaining unaccounted from Vietnam are 1,611. It’s important we never forget our lost brothers and sisters. We can keep their spirits alive by talking about them. In this month of May, and the 30th anniversary of Rolling Thunder, I urge you to find pictures or letters of family members or friends who died and tell someone about them. I had my office look through the Defense Casualty Analysis System extract files published in April of 2008 to learn more about the 58,220 Americans who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam war. Perhaps we can all make it our mission to continue to remember the missing, and respect and support those currently serving.

Kitty Brooks Kitty Brooks resides in San Diego, California and has been riding for 27 years. She is employed as a marketing representative at Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. Her position with Russ Brown affords her the opportunity to be around motorcycles on a full-time basis and, as you might guess, Kitty loves her job. Kitty first became interested in riding because her older brother, Tom, enjoyed riding and Kitty wanted to do what her big brother was doing. Now she rides to experience the freedom, the wind in her face, the adrenaline rush of being on the race track, and the connection most bikers feel when they meet others who ride. Other than the off-road bikes she owned when she first began riding, Kitty’s first street bike was a Kawasaki Ninja 250. After that, she owned several Honda VFR’s and currently owns an Aprilia Falco SL-1000, two Honda mini GP road racing bikes and a Harley-Davidson Dyna Switchback that she rides as her company work vehicle. Although spontaneous rides and meeting people along the way are among her favorites, Kitty will ride with anyone who shares her passion for two wheels. She has ridden with various racing organizations such as CMRRA, M1-GP and UMRA. Favorites places to ride are on the race track (of course!) or on twisty mountain roads with a good view. She has a special man in her life who does not ride but is very supportive and understands Kitty’s excitement when she sees a really cool bike or when she is about to ride off on an adventurous road trip. Other than riding, Kitty enjoys spending time with her very energetic dog who loves attention. She also enjoys baking and shoes. “A girl can never have enough shoes,” says Kitty. We believe she probably feels the same way about motorcycles!
