you who know us on a personal level are aware that we do what we can even with our very limited time and resources. We don’t do it for recognition. We don’t do it for the publicity. We don’t do it so our advertisers will buy an ad. We just do. We urge you to do the same. Please become involved. Please support one or more of the many existing military organizations directly so you know where your donation is going and who it will benefit. Not only is it a humble way of saying “thank you” to those who serve, it is our obligation to do so. Please remember a soldier in some way, big or small, as the holiday season approaches. November also smells like turkey! Let’s stuff our birds and get to basting! We know you have stories to tell and if you have a great thanksgiving tale to share, send it to me directly at caroline@flbdelmarva.com and we’re going to start a Biker Holiday blog – funny, emotional, sensational, tragic – we want to hear it all. So get writing and maybe we can dig up a prize for the best tale. Above all else, remember to spend time with family and friends. Reach out to relatives, friends and neighbors you haven’t heard from in a while just to say hello and wish them a happy holiday. I am going to get emotional on you now. As many of you know, I lost my daughter in 2010. There is nothing I wouldn’t give to have her with me for one more holiday gathering. I’d hug her and kiss her and make sure she knew how much she means to me. I won’t have that opportunity, but you might. I urge you, from the bottom of my heart, to embrace the moment because, in the scheme of things, that truly is all you get – a moment. Use it wisely. November is, of course, the kick-off to the holiday shopping season. Don’t over-spend your budget as the holiday shopping season begins. In fact, check out our holiday shopping pages and patronize your local biker-friendly businesses. Be sure to present your VIB card and, if a merchant doesn’t offer some sort of discount, ask “why not?” This is a FREE service that we offer to promote biker-to-biker business! In brief: Support our troops but do so wisely! Don’t gobble too much! Remember your loved ones! Support your local biker business!

ovember is here and riding season is in your rear-view mirror, fading

fast. You should take advantage of any nice day thrown your way

because Mother Nature will soon take over, urging us to hook up the battery tenders and hibernate until Spring – but not quite yet. There are still a few items that require our attention. November hosts Veteran’s Day. FLBD strongly supports our military in any way we can. BigPoppa served. My grandson, Davidson, is currently serving. My father served. In fact, just about every man in my life, alive or deceased, served. We support Operation We Care (www.operationwecare.com), a nonprofit organization that sends hundreds of care packages to our local deployed troops. We help raise awareness, we donate to postage (their biggest expense) and supply magazines for the boxes that we help pack. We also wrap our May issue around Rolling Thunder (www.rollingthunder1.org), a non-profit organization formed to raise awareness of POWs and MIAs and to spread the message “Never Forgotten.” The list of charities we have made some type of commitment with is extensive. Name: Kathleen Weber Age: 62 • Location: Doylestown, PA

Kathleen Weber began riding when she took the MSF beginners course in 2003, at age 52. Her first bike was a 2003 Suzuki Savage but, once she gained confidence and skill, she purchased a 2004 Harley Sportster. She sold the Sportster after registering 58,000 miles and then purchased a 2011 Heritage Softail which she still rides today. Her love of riding trickled down and now runs in the Weber family; both Kathleen’s sons ride and her daughter-in-law recently began riding as well. Kathleen immersed herself in the motorcycle community. She served as road Captain for Bucks County HOG for 10 years and leads rides for the Black Sheep MC. She also participates in most of the local charity rides from Fallen Heroes rides to MDA rides but admits a favorite to be the annual Autism ride that offers Kathleen the opportunity to do racing laps around the Pocono Race Track. Her top speed, so far, is 110 mph. Her favorite “back road” ride is when she returns to her hometown, Lake Hopatcong, NJ, because of the many scenic roads to be explored. Her most memorable ride to date is traveling across the country to California with a girlfriend in 2010. She logged 6,000 miles round trip and refers to the experience as “awesome.” Kathleen has also ridden to Florida and back, twice, and participated in many 4 day trips with Bucks County HOG to the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, Vermont, OBX and a variety of other locations. What advice does Kathleen offer to new riders? “Take the MSF courses. You can always learn something from it. Never day dream will riding. Keep alert with the notion that no one sees you and they may kill you so ride defensively.” We couldn’t agree more. “Riding has brought me a great deal of happiness, freedom and confidence,” says Kathleen. FLBD applauds Kathleen for being an inspiration to riders of all ages.

More info will be given as soon as a flier is out. • NHTSA crash study was a huge flop. NTSB now has helmets completely off their list. We are watching Obama care closely. Will this be a back door to a national helmet law? We will watch and see. MRF is monitoring it closely. We discussed causes of fatal accidents. We were surprised to see the stats from this compilation. Here are some of the causes and contributing factors: Alcohol related/motorcyclist impaired, no motorcycle license, no motorcycle safety course, speed, ran off road, ROW violations (motorcyclist violated right of way), time of day, panic stop, rear breaking only, crossed center line, lost control on ramp, failure to judge stopping distance, age group, medical condition, road conditions, tire debris, motorcycle equipment. Motorcyclists would like to think it is the cars fault due to right of way violations, but according to statistics that is not so. Motorcyclists are at fault also. We must be responsible and safe riders. There is no excuse to ride impaired or without a motorcycle license. ABATE of Maryland is in the process of gathering the statistics on fatal motorcycle crashes for 2012 so we can study the root causes and address them. This is our job. This is what we do. Are you ready? The cooler temperatures mean no more riding with bikini tops and short sleeve shirts. It’s time to bundle up in full leather jackets, gloves and chaps (with the cheeks fully covered!). But at least you can still ride provided you aren’t afraid of a little wind chill. I opt to deal with it without heated seats, gloves, or jackets. I handle the cold the old fashion way - layers that make me resemble Randy from A Christmas Story (except I can put my arms down). Nothing against technology lovers; I prefer to feel the changing weather. As some of you know, September was the old man’s birthday and we decided to go out riding in search of breakfast to mark the occasion. It’s always nice to spend time with family, especially if that time is spent cruising down back roads at 50 mph, soaking up sunshine and enjoying the Fall hues. We rode up into Pennsylvania and found The Strawberry House Restaurant and Bakery in Pennsburg, PA. We shed a few layers before stepping inside to a cozy little diner and, immediately, I knew the food would be good. As the name suggests, there is also a bakery on site and I tried to be inconspicuous as I eyed up the pies and cookies while waiting to be seated. Let’s get down to the food! I ordered the Country Club Breakfast which is an omelet stuffed with turkey, bacon, tomatoes, onions and cheese, served with a side of home fries and toast. I also ordered FAST LANE BIKER

a side of apple sausage, just so I could “fat man” it up. I devoured the omelet and home fries but the sausage was so good (with just the perfect hint of apple), I had to share with everyone at my table. I finished my toast but I guess the alcohol level in my system from the previous evening needed more filler so I scavenged some of Miss Caroline’s bacon. I must say the food was great and they lived up to my belief that small places have the best food. I decided to go light on the sweets and purchased just a few chocolate chip cookies. I figured it’s a nice ride with great scenery so I can always return for more! We bundled up and headed out on the back roads and I enjoyed the cool air blowing in my face just the way it is supposed to be this time of year. If you are looking for a nice ride with good scenery, I recommend riding out to The Strawberry House. You won’t be disappointed with the food, the service or the bakery section (those cookies lasted about 3 minutes once I arrived home – I should have gotten more!). The Strawberry House Restaurant and Bakery is located at 3771 Layfield Road, Pennsburg, PA. If you have comments or want to suggest a biker-friendly eatery, feel free to email me at Jay@flbdelmarva.com. Until next time, remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

WHITE ROSE THUNDER 2013 ®

YORK, PA

BY JEFF REHMEYER / PHOTOS BY ALICIA “BBA” HELFRICH

White Rose Thunder® collided in York, PA, causing 4 days of full throttle excitement for the second straight year, September 26th thru 29th. The gates at the York Expo Center opened on Thursday with more than 150 vendors offering biker-friendly goods and services. Dealers representing Indian Motorcycles, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Can Am, Yamaha and others, including custom builders, displayed bikes of all styles. For those who wanted to enhance their current ride, vendors offered custom paint, lights, mechanical upgrades, and accessories. Visual treats included an extreme sand sculpture by world champion Brian Turnbough and displays featuring antique bikes and cars, hot rods, customs, muscle cars, and off-road vehicles. For fans of metal, machines, leather and paint, we had that covered as well. Thrill seekers were dazzled throughout the weekend by the Ives Family aerial feats of skill and finesse. Bikes launched over thirty feet in the air, sometimes coordinating in pairs. Between the jumps, wheelies and burnouts kept fans on edge. They also entered the Ball of Steel (which required courage of the same type, if you get my meaning...), circling both individually and in pairs. As if that wasn’t enough, the evening topped off with a concert series that included Robbing Noll, Bullet Method, and headliner POP EVIL who rocked the grandstand stage with songs like their recent #1 hit, Trenches, and Deal with the Devil, their recently released chart-climbing jam. After the concert, a “private party” continued as the band met with fans, signing autographs and posing for photo ops. Friday revved it up a notch with plenty of food and drink covering everyone’s tastes. The Roadhouse Café opened and provided a performance FAST LANE BIKER

area for none other than Biker Billy who cooked with fire, entertaining the audience who enjoyed his hotn-tasty treats. The CafÊ offered a combination of Billy’s recipes and its own including crab cakes and turtle soup. If your culinary preferences wanted a more typical menu, there were food vendors on hand who offered pit beef, pit turkey, pulled pork and other delicious sandwiches. Entries for the bike show were displayed and ready for judging and the biker games lured men, women and machines to compete for bragging rights and prizes. Winners received awards of Pewetarex bearing the event logo courtesy of sponsors Stambaugh Law and Runkle’s Notary and Insurance. Friday concerts included The Revelators in the late afternoon followed in the evening by the ever popular, always sassy and extremely talented Mustang Sally Band. Attendees enjoyed their music and humor as they offered their renditions of classic songs including The Devil Went Down to Georgia. By Saturday, if you were fortunate enough to arrive prior to the race, you were given a priceless glimpse into the roots of both motorcycles and racing history. Demonstrations involving 2 Harley-Davidson and 2 Excelsior cycles took place and all four of the bikes were nearly 100 years old! Then came the main event and you could feel the excitement swell as spectators November, 2013

braced for an exciting day of racing. Hundreds of flat track motorcycle racers and their crews set up race pits adjacent to the half mile track for the Second Annual Budweiser Randy Texter Memorial Flat Track Race, named in honor of a fallen, but never forgotten, member of our racing community. By 10 a.m., engines roared and racers poised to begin the competition. Fans both old and new cheered as 131 professional entrants competed in classes including 250 Amateur, 450 Amateur, Open Amateur, Vintage & Senior (+30), Pro Singles, Pro Twins, Expert Singles and Expert Twins. $15,000 in prize money, pewter trophy plates and recognition went to the winners. As the racing reached its climax, the fastest of the racers qualified for the “Dash for Cash,” where each of the winners of two separate races pocketed a grand for the win. If for some reason racing didn’t attract you, more biker games and the bike and car shows gave you plenty to take in. The Anti-Team stunt riders were on hand as well and offered stunt shows using street bikes, scooters and more. With so much to see and do, there was never a dull moment – unless you wanted one! Once the dust settled and the engines cooled, a new excitement began to build as Grand Funk Railroad brought classic rock to an enthusiastic crowd for the ultimate Saturday night concert. The audience sang along to many of their popular hits including I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Loco-Motion. lowed by a fireworks display. White Rose Thunder速 ended with a colorful, exciting and patriotic BANG. Sunday was laid back and allowed attendees an opportunity to take in anything they might have missed. Flat track racing continued with over a hundred amateurs taking to the track for more gravel slinging, handle bar banging, high speed fun. The Christian Motorcyclist Association offered a service and the 1st Pennsylvania Chapter of the Defenders Motorcycle Club conducted their second charity ride to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Nearly a hundred riders lined up and chrome and leather took to the roads to benefit those in need. White Rose Thunder速 supported well over a dozen other charities as well. As the event came to a close, all agreed that White Rose Thunder速 had made its mark and would be a welcome addition to bike week festivities in York every year. The event organizers thanked all involved and promised a bigger and better show for 2014, with a primary event in the works for early summer, June 12-15 (to include racing, concerts, shows, vendors & more) plus a late September flat track race to coincide with York City Bike Night, Harley-Davidson open house, and the Jefferson Hill Climbs. The planning is underway and details will be released throughout the year at www. WhiteRoseThunder.com. November, 2013

ABATE BIKE SHOW

BY TRACEY LEIGH

HARRINGTON, DELAWARE, JUNE 23, 2013

The rain didn’t stop bikers from gathering for the ABATE bike show on June 23, 2013 at the American Legion in Harrington, Delaware. Although the weather was damp, spirits were high and attendees made the best of Mother Nature’s force. Riders dried as they enjoyed a breakfast buffet at Rudy’s but it was short lived. They soon headed out in the rain, again, ready to enjoy friends, cool bikes, biker games, music and more food. Special thanks to everyone who participated and we hope to see you (and the sun) next year! For more information on future events or membership, visit www.ABATEofDE.com.

CHASING THE JERSEY DEVIL

NEW JERSEY

According to the most common folklore, Mother Leeds (thought to be a witch), was pregnant with her 13th child. She proclaimed the child she was carrying was, in fact, the spawn of the Devil. On a stormy night in 1735, friends gathered around as Mother Leeds began labor. When the child arrived, he appeared normal but then changed his form to a creature with hooves, a goat’s head, bat wings and a forked tail. It growled and screeched and slaughtered the midwife before finally escaping up the chimney and disappearing into the Pine Barrens. In 1740, it is purported that a clergy exorcised the demon for 100 years, never to be seen again until... With the ridiculously warm October weather came an invitation we couldn’t refuse – come to the New Jersey side so we can show you how we roll. Big Poppa and I agreed and roll we did. It didn’t matter that the invitation came from two degenerates, er, um, friends, I found myself in questionable situations with the weekend before at White Rose Thunder® in York, PA. That should have been the red flag but I have always had my adventurous side (just ask Big Poppa!). The bike was loaded with overnight necessities (toothbrush, clean underwear and three pairs of shoes) and we headed to Jersey for a Saturday afternoon meet up with our friends, Charlene and Terry Hotz, at the Flying W Airport and Resort in Medford, NJ. This was a first year event and I have to say the facility is a very sweet setup. There’s a FAST LANE BIKER

hotel, swimming pool, restaurant, tiki bar with stage for live music, enough ground to get lost if you wanted and, check this out, airplanes! Current models and those dripping with nostalgia filled the airfield and, if you had a mind to, you could go for a scenic tour in a helicopter. There was plenty to eat and drink, vendors, games and lots of socializing and dancing on the deck. Guess what? I won one of the hourly 50/50s to support breast cancer awareness! We were having a blast in the Pine Barrens! And that is where we came face to fender with the Jersey Devil. Ernie Gerber’s interest in the Jersey Devil took root when he was just a child on the family farm in Tabernacle, NJ. His dad and uncle would tease young Ernie with tales of the Jersey Devil who lived in the top of the corn crib. To add credibility, they made Jersey Devil “foot prints” in the dirt leading to the corn crib and waved cigarette smoke by Ernie’s bedroom window as he lay waiting for sleep at night. In the morning, they would tell Ernie the Jersey Devil must have been outside his bedroom window. As he grew older, the stories became more elaborate prompting a curious Ernie to go off on Jersey Devil hunts around Carranza. “You wouldn’t believe the screams and noises you hear up in the Wharton Forest at night,” explained Ernie. The legend of the Jersey Devil was a topic of conversation that came up often during his life. Ernie was also bit by the riding bug at a young age and he discovered mini bikes, go carts, dirt bikes and then, when the movie Easy Rider came along, Ernie had to have a chopper. He rode motorcycles after serving in the military but sold his bike once he and his wife, Cindy, began a family. Still, he never lost the yearning to ride nor his fascination with the Jersey Devil myth. Fast forward, his family is grown and Ernie decided it was time to get another bike. He and Cindy enjoyed November, 2013

riding together but his desire still leaned towards a chopper. In 2007, he crossed paths with Cumberland County Custom Cycles and a custom builder named Joel who asked what Ernie had in mind. Ernie confided his preoccupation with a Jersey Devil theme. They put it on paper, Cindy approved, and the Jersey Devil chopper came to life. So there we stood face to fender with the Jersey Devil. We circled it, cautiously, admiring its shape, its glow, the fur on its seat and the forked tail off the back fender. “We’re all going out tomorrow morning,” said Charlene. At that moment, the Jersey Devil twinkled as if to say, “Catch me if you can.” The Saturday night remorse was waived away by the smell of coffee (thanks, Terry!) and we gobbled down a breakFEAST (thanks again, Terry!), showered (without Terry!) and headed out to meet up with our group, Jersey Devil included. Pic-a-Lilly Inn, 866 Route 206, Shamong, NJ (www.picalilli.com) We pulled onto the lot and noticed two options: A restaurant where you could sit and enjoy a leisurely meal, or a separate, screened-in area with bar, seating and TVs. We chose the “outside” bar. Breakfast was still sitting snugly in my belly so I only needed some unsweetened iced tea while others opted for the “hair of the dog.” We watched as barbecue pits were prepped and lots of staff showed up. The unseasonably warm Sunday was going to bring out sports fans and bikers and Pic-a-Lilly had every intention of being prepared. We didn’t stay long but the group assured me this was a great spot for food and drink and that it is bikerfriendly. Then we heard that roar that could only mean one thing – the Jersey Devil was riding out and we had to keep up.

The Hedger House, 4265 Route 563, Chatsworth, NJ (www.thehedgerhouse.com) We tailed the Jersey Devil to this “must do” bikerfriendly bar and restaurant. The key word here is BARBECUE and the massive pit is set up in the side lot so you have to pass by it to go into the bar. The Grill Master Extraordinaire is Bubba and his baked beans (which looked more like a stew) are to die for. It’s his mother’s recipe and that’s one lady who knew how to cook! We also sampled the pit beef and pork and it was equally impressive. You can place your order and then take a seat in the bar, on the front porch or around the back where bands set up. For whatever reason, there was also a rooster running around and crowing as if to greet guests. I love this place!! Our bellies were full once again and although we were ready for a nap, it quickly became apparent that naps were not on the Jersey Devil’s agenda.

Breezes Bar and Grill, 5724 Route 9, New Gretna, NJ (www.breezesbarandgrill.com) If boats and water and cocktails on the deck seduce you, you’ll love this place. In addition to the inside bar with big screen TVs, and the dining area on the deck with scenic view, Breezes also has a few corner nooks of wicker sofas and chairs and our group took up residence there and got silly. We opted for iced teas but those who ate and drank gave Breezes a thumbs up. We were so comfy that we didn’t want to leave. FAST LANE BIKER

The sun felt so good on our faces but then we heard that now-familiar sound – the Jersey Devil was on the move again. Sweetwater River Deck, 2780 7th Ave., Sweetwater, NJ (www.sweetwaterriverdeck.com) We caught sight of the Jersey Devil as he turned onto a hidden trail with a weathered street sign that read Back Road. We tried to keep up with that tenacious beast as best we could. Suddenly the road opened to a very weathered bar, picnic tables, lawn furniture and a fabricated stage. The bar was packed, the tables were occupied, and folks were sitting on the ground. Some had blankets, others used jackets, and still others just sat among nature. We didn’t expect to see all these people. Wait, these were not just ordinary people – they were bikers! Bikers swarming the Sweetwater like cockroaches! We jumped at the opportunity to claim a newly-vacated picnic table and shortly thereafter the band began to play. Everyone was having a great time at this hidden Jersey gem that we highly recommend you take time to discover. We reminded ourselves that we were there to complete a mission and we slipped away to the parking lot and there, resting after being ridden hard, we saw it. We cautiously approached the beast with hands extended and slowly, gently touched the fur on the seat. I couldn’t help myself and I allowed my fingers to glide down the forked tail. Footsteps come up behind us and we turned to find Ernie, the only man allowed to climb the beast and take control of his direction. “May we take a photo,” I asked? Ernie regarded us cautiously but eventually acquiesced. And that, my friends, is how we finally managed to capture the Jersey Devil. Not with a net and not with bait; we caught the Jersey Devil with a digital trap and now he is ours, forever.

HOT

FLBD met Amy and Audri at the 45th Street Taphouse during bike week in Ocean City, MD when they entered the Hot Cougar Contest. They tied for 3rd place. Congratulations, ladies!

Am y Cougar

Amy lives in Falling Waters, WV and works in Human Resources. She has been with the same employer in Hagerstown, MD for over 9 years. Although she is a single mom to teenage daughter, Katie, her fondness for her boyfriend, Russ, changes her status to unavailable. Growing up, Amy could usually be found riding back seat with her dad. She missed those moments but didn’t have the opportunity to fall in love with riding again until she turned 41. Amy enjoys the outdoors, sunrises, the beach and cooking. She also focuses on fitness and works out at least 3 times each week and looks for new and interesting ways to make it fun such as pole fitness and sexy chair. “I feel life is short and should be lived to the fullest,” said Amy. We believe her! Amy is 42 years old.
