OPERATION WE CARE Here in your own backyard, your friends and neighbors on Delmarva are supporting those deployed overseas through Operation We Care which collects, sorts, packs and sends care packages to our troops. The project continues with the support of many people, local businesses and civic organizations. The Delmarva community continues to step up and help whenever asked and we are fortunate to live in such a great community. HOW DID IT START? Operation We Care started in 2007 as a grassroots effort by the Eastern Shore Chapter Harley Owners Group to show support and appreciation for the brave men and women around the world protecting our freedom. We also support the families here at home who are dealing with life’s challenges while their loved one is deployed. The project continues with the support of Harley-Davidson of Seaford and the Delmarva Harley Owners Group Chapter. HOW DOES IT WORK? Items are collected from a half dozen local businesses sponsoring drop off locations on Delmarva. Anyone can stop by participating locations during business hours to drop off items for a care package. Each donation counts no matter how large or small! The care package items collected across Delmarva are driven to a central location in Salisbury where they are inspected and sorted into bins by type. After all the items are sorted the bins are hauled by trailer to the semi-annual packing party event. Volunteers gather for a very special day of filling several hundred care packages. Although items are collected year round, there are only two packing party events per year: one in May to honor Armed Forces Day and one in November to honor Veteran’s Day.
Here in your own backyard, your friends and neighbors on Delmarva are supporting those deployed overseas through Operation We Care which collects, sorts, packs and sends care packages to our troops.
DO YOU NEED FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS? Postage cost is our biggest challenge. Each care package costs $12.95 to ship. Last November we shipped 328 care packages and spent over $4000. In 2010 alone we spent over $7000 in postage. Thanks to the generous donations of many service organizations, local businesses and individuals we have been able to make this work. If you would like to help defray the cost of postage, checks can be dropped off at, or mailed to, any Operation We Care donation collection site.
Do you know a soldier Who we could send a care package to? Email us with contact info:

SENIOR MOMENT Name: Bob Harrington, Sr. ~ Age: 68 ~ Location: Westminster, MD
keep busy in the shop, buying and selling bikes. But his father liked working on the job every day and Bob, Jr. decided not to try to stop him.
Bob Harrington was born in 1944 in Welsh, WV, but raised in Baltimore, MD. He began riding dirt bikes in the 60s before graduating to his first street bike, a BSA. Now he enjoys riding his 2004 wide glide.
As hard as Bob, Sr. works, he plays even harder. He’s been out with Bob, Jr. until 2 a.m. and still wakes at the crack of dawn to call his son with a big “GOOD MORNING” - ready to start a job. He’s a positive person and always has a good time wherever his travels take him. This year, during bike week in Ocean City, MD, Bob had a blast. Because of all the rain, he spent time with his son bar hopping and riding the drunk bus. Many of the ladies he encountered thought he was Santa and sat on his lap. At the end of the night, all Bob could say was that it appeared he was going to be very busy this Christmas!
Bob’s first job was in a clothing factory but he quickly discovered working indoors wasn’t for him. He thought construction would be a better fit and decided to stroll into a construction site one day looking for employment. He told the job foreman he was an iron worker even though he had no experience. They hired him on the spot as a “rod man” and he’s been an iron worker ever since. He’s a member of Local #16. Bob also owns LB Construction with his son, Bob, Jr., and works every day with his tools. In an effort to keep his father from working so hard on job sites, Bob, Jr. decided to open a motorcycle shop, Papertown Auto & Cycle Center. He hoped his father would

ASK THE ATTORNEY
devastating effect if you are ever involved in an accident without a helmet.
By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire
1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com
On a final, note, if any of you are currently renting a home or an apartment, it is imperative that you purchase renters insurance. This insurance will cover your personal possessions if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed, be it by flood, fire or theft. It also protects you against liability in the event someone is injured while visiting your home. Many people are under the misconception that if you are renting, the owner of the property will have insurance that will covers your personal effects. This is absolutely not true. In order to be personally protected, you must purchase this coverage. It is normally very reasonable and can be a life saver if you ever experience a loss as described above.
This month’s column actually deals with some GOOD news on the insurance front for a change. Normally when I comment on insurance issues the news is generally bad. However, I recently learned that the Erie Insurance Company has requested that they be allowed to offer motorcycle coverage that is capable of being stacked onto Erie automobile coverage. Although the change has not yet taken place, the fact that Erie is requesting it, is a positive sign and signals to me that Erie is likely to start competing for motorcycle insurance business. That usually means lower premiums due to increased competition.
I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney. com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).
To the best of my knowledge, the only company that currently allows you to stack your motorcycle policy onto your auto policy is State Farm. However, that assumes that you have purchased the “stacking” option on both polices. I assume the same would also hold true for Erie. This should be welcome news to anyone who currently has Erie Insurance and wants to insure their motorcycle with Erie.
Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only “Cycle Attorney”
On another note, I recently received a call from a client advising that his private health plan in PA has an exclusion written into the policy allowing the insurance company to deny coverage if he is involved in a motorcycle accident and is not wearing a helmet”. Although, I haven’t seen the language, I have no reason to disbelieve that the language is in the plan. Whether this exclusion would hold up if it was challenged legally, I don’t know. This is the first time I have heard of any type of helmet exclusion, but if challenged and upheld, it may become standard language in many health policies. This is clearly the exception to the rule right now, however I fear that as insurance companies are becoming increasingly restrictive, this language could find its way into more health insurance policies.
TIME MACHINE by Tim Hayes
Faster... And faster... Let go and trust the soul of the beast. Mindless instinct blurs reality. Two speeding wheels Welded now into one racing heart Melting into the passing horizon beneath. Frightening beauty Morphs into unbridled passion. Fears frozen in place, Left behind with the present, Unable to catch the future, Already past. Crossing the line now, and then To the untapped consciousness of life; Leaving it to follow, Too late. Still faster... And faster...
The only similar language I have seen, has been found in Union sponsored health insurance plans in New Jersey, wherein many of them have restricted the coverage they provide if the injuries occur while operating a motorcycle. I will keep all of you informed when and if I find out more information about this topic. In the meantime, just to be safe, you may want to review your own health policy contract to find out if this language is in your policy, because it could have a 5

Cliff Sutherland
Promoter, OC BikeFest, Ocean City, MD 2. What exactly do you do in that capacity? I spend most of my time reviewing financials, planning events and participating in the local non-profit community as well as regional and statewide tourism efforts.
Cliff Sutherland is part owner of Triple S Harley-Davidson in Morgantown, WV where he resides with his wife, Patty, and their two dachshunds, Baxter and Charlie. He has three children, Andy, Jennifer and Stephen and four grandchildren, Tyler, Austin, Jacob and Jaxson. Cliff spends the majority of his time working at the dealership, organizing two major events: MountainFest Motorcycle Rally and OC BikeFest, and helping local non-profit organizations. When he isn’t working, Cliff is usually playing basketball or traveling to his second home in Ocean City, MD.
3. Where were you born? I was born in Landstul, Germany. My dad was a Staff Sargent in the United States Army. 4. Where do you currently reside and for how long? I live in Morgantown, WV and have for the past 41 years. My family and I have been vacationing in Ocean City, MD for 41 years.
Cliff’s involvement in the motorcycling community started in 2002, when he and his partners purchased Triple S HarleyDavidson. At that time, he didn’t ride at all but was quickly immersed in the culture and, in 2004, started riding his own hog. Once Cliff figured out just how great riding in the Mountain State was, he knew he had to share it with others. The same year he started riding, Cliff, along with several other avid motorcyclists, started MountainFest Motorcycle Rally. Now in its 8th year, the rally is one of West Virginia’s largest events and has gained national recognition from the motorcycling community. In 2011, Cliff took his love of motorcycling to his second home and started OC BikeFest at the Inlet in Ocean City, MD, along with three other partners. The event, which was held September 15 -18, 2011, survived its first year, and will be back September 13 – 16, 2012.
5. What do you like/admire most about yourself? My parents taught me to give back and get involved at an early age. I’m most proud of my involvement in the community and non-profits. MountainFest, an annual motorcycle rally held each July in Morgantown, WV, is an event that was started by just a few people and has grown into one of the largest events in the state of WV. The rally donates proceeds raised at the event to local non-profits. In its first 7 years, MountainFest has donated over $600,000 to several charity organizations. 6. What is the one thing you would change about yourself? I’d spend more time with my family. 7. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? My art collection.
1. How long have you been involved with your business/occupation? My partner, Steve Solomon and I have owned Triple S Harley-Davidson for 10 years. We also have other partnerships that we own and manage including apartments, mini storage and land development.
FA S T L A N E B I K E R
8. Who is your fictional hero? Superman, of course. I still have dreams of flying. 9. Who do you consider your real life hero? My real life hero is Mike Puskar, the founder of Mylan Pharmaceuticals. He was a self-made man. He 6
I only have one speed. My partners have always provided me with the opportunity to be involved in the community.
had a vision of cheaper generic brand drugs. He believed in hard work, quality and his employees. He went to work every day even after he became wealthy. He could have lived anywhere in the world but choose to live in Morgantown. He donated many millions to the community. If he heard of a business having trouble, he would send money with a note that simply said pay it back if you can. He would buy medical equipment for those who could not provide for themselves and pay to put someone through college. He once sent unsolicited money to me for a non-profit event. After the event, he sent a thank you note for spending my time to help the community. Every year thereafter, he would send the event a check and follow up with a hand written thank you note. Unfortunately, Mike passed away on October 7, 2011.
11. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? I believe I would have made a good counselor or mediator. I would have enjoyed coaching basketball or maybe refereeing in the NCAA or NBA. 12. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? That could be a different answer depending on the day. I don’t know if God counts or not, but I would like to be able to see the world from his position. I’m a big picture person and would like the perspective. 13. What would you do if you were able to retire? I would build and operate the first ever HarleyDavidson miniature golf course in Ocean City. I’d enjoy watching the families play and appreciating Harley-Davidson. I would spend the off season traveling with my wife, Patty.
10. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? I’m asked all the time how I have the time to work and do so many things with non-profits in the community. I tell them I have no idea. I think it’s because I put my head down and move forward at all times.

I’ve never had three biker babes at once, & I need something to keep me horny, keep me potent.” The pharmacist reaches under the counter, unlocks the bottom drawer & takes out a small cardboard box marked with a label “Viagra Extra Strength” & says, “Here, if you eat this, you’ll go NUTS for 12 hours!”

At closing time, he saw one of the bikers stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, try his keys on five different bikes before he found his. Then, sat on the bike fumbling around several minutes, looking as if he might pass out right there. Everyone left the bar and rode off. Finally, he started his engine and began to pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the biker, read him his rights and administered the Breathalyzer Test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be. The biker replied, “Tonight, I’m the Designated Decoy.” 9

RIDE TO EAT . EAT TO RIDE PUBLIC HOUSE . WILMINGTON, DE By Jay Kuch, Mystery Food Critique
I’m back to my normal routine and fairly dried out from bike week in Ocean City, MD. The weather is getting a little brisk which is perfect for riding. The leaves are starting to change and riding through back roads has never been better. So make time for riding before it’s too cold and before you start breaking down the bike for those cold month upgrades, or starting those custom projects.

It was broiled to perfection with just a little crunch on the outside and a warm, inviting center. Yes, inviting as in “I’m inviting you to have another bite, then another, until you get to the point where you want another sandwich, but it’s time for the show soon so I was heading to Wilmington, DE to see a Louis C you can’t.” It is probably one of the best crab cakes I K show (which was awesome). VIETNAM/LEGACY VETS MC S CHAPTER 3RD ANNUAL BIKE SHOW by Tracey Leigh
Milford, DE (Sept. 10, 2011) – Good weather, friendly folks and cool bikes added to an event that was already on the list of great things for a great cause. The Vietnam/Legacy Vets MC S Chapter hosted their 3rd Annual Bike Show at the Milford Riverwalk Freedom Festival and offered trophies for Best of Show, People’s Choice, Antique, Custom, Dresser, Import, Sportster and Stock. Rob “Maniac” Russo did a fantastic job running this free event and a 50/50 drawing was held with proceeds benefitting wounded troops. Kudos to Milford Chamber of Commerce, Grass Etc., Park Place Bar and Restaurant, Kustom Kutz, Walls Farm and Garden, Dover Pools, Classic Cycles, Woodside Mini Storage, Popeye’s Cycles, Christopher Burns DDS and Vietnam Veterans of America 850 who, along with Vietnam/Legacy Vets MC, provided the trophies for the bike show winners. Live music, great food and auctions rounded out the event. This year, melted metal from the 9/11 tragedy made a stop at the event on its way to Dover Air Force Base, adding a sobering moment of remembrance. The Vietnam/Legacy Vets MC hope to see all of you in 2012!

I have been on the road for over a decade now and I thought I would share with you some of my observations and insight. Please do not take these personally and don’t get offended, these are just the rantings of a mad man. I thought it would be neat to put them in a TOP TEN list ala Letterman. Number 10: I WOULD LOVE TO COME TO YOUR EVENT AND THIS IS HOW MUCH I CHARGE $$$. It is not financially sound to drive halfway across the country at 6mpg to set up at a small rally to lose money. Number 9: PHOTOGRAPHERS, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO SELL ME A PHOTO SHOOT. My scooters have appeared in numerous mags and tv shows and I never turn down free publicity but don’t try to sell me a shoot. Number 8: LADIES, I DON’T GIVE FREE SHIRTS IF YOU SHOW ME YOUR TITS As much pleasure as I find in your offer I have seen a lot of them and its not a Number 3: STAY OFF MY BIKES! Just because it has a good business plan. pole on it doesn’t mean you should climb on it. I was raised to never touch someone’s bike without permisNumber 7: DON’T ASK FOR A DISCOUNT ON A T- sion and I still follow that credo. For once please follow SHIRT. We don’t sell 5 for 20 t-shirts and never will. my example. I give my repeat customers and the rare person who doesn’t annoy me a discount. Number 2: I DON’T MAKE KID’S CLOTHES and never Number 6: PLEASE DON’T ASK ME TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE T-SHIRT DESIGNS. I have worked very hard to create a brand identity and would not ever use someone’s designs and I hunt down those who steal mine. (See next month’s article.) Number 5: JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN BE NAKED DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD BE NAKED. I do a lot of clothing optional adult rallies and as a general rule if your stomach exceeds your chest please remain clothed and all men need to be clothed.
will, just not comfortable going down that road. I have enough stuff I have to answer for already. Number 1: PLEASE DON’T WALK INTO MY BOOTH AND ASK WHAT I HAVE FOR FREE. I give free stuff to people who make a purchase and I send stuff to Irag and Afghanistan and donate to legit charities, but when I pull up at the truck stop for diesel fuel, it ain’t free.
Number 4: THIS IS STRIP CLUB CHOPPERS. IT IS NOT As I indicated earlier these were A STRIP CLUB. Please don’t come to the booth and just for fun and 99% of the people expect a lap dance or naked women. Do you have any are great. This list is for the rest. idea the legal nightmare that would be. 13

THE HARRINGTON MOOSE RIDERS 3RD ANNUAL BIKE & CAR SHOW Story and photos by Tracey Leigh
Harrington, DE (Oct. 8, 2011) - So there I was on a sunny October day, eating hot wings and cole slaw with Roger “Heavy” Clark, his lovely wife, Linda, and his brother. Roger is the Moose Riders’ Road Captain and led the festivities at The Harrington Moose Riders 3rd Annual Bike and Car Show in Harrington, DE. We sat under the pavilion and listened to live music provided by The Myth from Dover, DE. They cranked out classic rock tunes by the Eagles, ZZ Top and Steppenwolf. More than a dozen of us gathered for a 5-hole, 50/50 putt-putt golf game. We had a great time, laughing our way from hole to hole, while Roger tried to keep score in one hand and hold onto his beer with the other. The winner of the golf game was Bill Tice and he proudly walked away with $35 and bragging rights. We waited patiently for the winners of the Bike and Car Show, 50/50 raffle and wooden wall hanging to be announced. Moose Riders’ President and resident comedian Donald “Bad Apple” Risser announced the winners and also had a few good jokes prepared. Lee Varnsen won best in show in the motorcycle division and Robert Bodner won best in show in the car division. The winner of the wooden wall hanging sporting a beautiful blonde woman was Frank “Fly-by” Richardson, who truly appeared to enjoy his newfound love. Even the kids had a great time running and playing in the nearby playground. The proceeds of the event benefit many organizations including Moosehaven, the “City of Contentment,” a 72-acre campus in Florida that serves

as home to retired members since 1922, and MooseHeart, a residential childcare facility in Chicago, home to youths whose families are unable to care for them or children who have lost one or both parents. The men and women of the Moose, through unparalleled generosity and volunteerism, furnish the resources necessary to care for children in need. The proceeds from events also support organizations and residents in our local communities by providing school supplies to schools in Felton, DE, building handicapped ramps, providing Christmas funds for those in need and assist Moose members in financial crisis. Thank you for a good time and everything you do. I look forward to the 4th Harrington Moose Riders Car & Bike Show in 2012.

DAYTONA BEACH BIKETOBERFEST Story and photos by Anthony & Michele Martone, StarPhotos
Daytona Beach Biketoberfest was organized in 1992 and attracts approximately 75,000 to 100,000 bikers each October. The event includes motorcycle shows, activities, great food, bikini contests, music and other happenings from Daytona International Speedway all the way up A1A to Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley Davidson of Daytona Beach. We learned that Rossmeyer’s first store is being remodeled into a museum and they hope to complete renovations in time for the March bike week. We made a few stops along the way and made several friends while seeing some familiar faces as well. First stop was the Hog Pen where we ran into Johnny Lange of Strip Club Choppers and his beautiful fiancé, Dawn. We sat and talked for awhile about the event and possible future events to attend. After saying our see ya laters, we hopped across the street to the Iron Horse. The place was so packed they were turning away bikes for lack of parking space. The music was good so we stuck around and had a bite to eat. Next stop was Boot Hill where we ran into Blue Horseshoe Tattoo Tour Bus. Yes, that’s right, a Tattoo Tour Bus. This thing is a fully equipped mobile tattoo studio on wheels. We popped our heads in to see what was going on. They had 3 artists working at the time. I spoke to the manager, Shondra, for a moment and learned they had come all the way from Virginia Beach. Shondra let us have a look around and we checked out some of their work and even had a happy customer show us how she got a discount on her nipple piercings (you’ve got to see the bus door). By then, we were getting thirsty and decided to stop at Wild Bill’s for a libation. We saw so many awesome, gorgeous, outrageous bikes we simply couldn’t get pictures of them all. It was difficult to take in everything in the time we were there. Next year, we’ll extend our stay so we can soak it all in. After all, next year is the 20th anniversary and we plan to be there to help celebrate!

TECH TIP . OIL WINTERIZE NOW OR SPRING (FOR A BIG BILL LATER) By Shawn E. Sweeney, Cycle Connect
Most of us don’t live in a climate where riding year round is a common thing and something about snow and two wheels just doesn’t seem to work, although my grandfather did have a set of tire chains on his BMW and side car. But he was a little nuts. Here, we go by the numbers. 1. CHOSE A GOOD LOCATION. When possible, chose a storage location away from windows. The ultraviolet light can fade paint and plastic parts. Direct sunlight can raise the ambient temperature of the storage area which will promote condensation when the sun goes down. Moisture trapped will condense on the bike and then the rust monster is back! You can eliminate this threat by using a motorcycle cover made from breathable material. 2. DON’T WAIT UNTIL SPRING TO CHANGE THE OIL. I always see ads that promote motorcycle storage and, for an extra fee, they will change the oil in the spring. I scream, “You idiots!” They expect me to pay them to leave contaminated oil in my engine all winter and let the acid and other corrosives that are a b-product of combustion (one of the reasons we change our oil) sit in my bike all winter? NOT! Changing the oil is a must do before storage. In fact, I strongly recommend changing all the fluids - brake, clutch and coolant. 3. THE BATTERY. If possible remove your battery and store it in a warm place. But even more important, keep it on a battery tender or trickle charger. The preferred unit is a tender that cycles off and on so you don’t cook your battery. You’ll pay a little more but it’s worth it. Note that it doesn’t work if you don’t hook it up. For every ten units we sell, at least one guy shows up each spring with a dead battery stating that he bought the charger but never hooked it up. I, of course, gladly hook him up with a new battery. 4. THE FUEL SYSTEM. Once upon a time, STA-BIL was the answer - until Ethanol changed all that. We won’t go into an Ethanol discussion but here is an informative link: www.goldeagle.com/engine_care/ 411onethanol.aspx, STA-BIL now has several different products including one for ethanol. But I have heard from several sources that the marine STA-BIL works very well. I have not tried it myself but plan to do so this winter. Key to remember is to fill up the tank with fuel to prevent rusting, add stabilizer and drain carbs, and, if carb bowls can’t be drained, turn off fuel and run them dry. 5. SET TIRE PRESSURE. Tire pressure should be set to max psi on the side wall of the tire.
This will slow the air in the tire from condensing in the cold and help prevent side wall cracking when the tire starts to flatten out. A small piece of cardboard under the tires works well if you don’t have a way to get the wheels off the ground. 6. WAX AND POLISH EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. WD-40 works great as a protector for metal and chrome. Add a teaspoon of oil in each spark plug hole and turn the motor over a few times by hand to prevent moisture from rusting the piston rings to the cylinder wall. You may also want to place plastic bags over the air cleaner and exhaust, held in place with a rubber band, to help keep out moisture and rodents. Is that enough information? If this sounds like too much to do you can always ride throughout the winter – I’ll be posting my grandfather’s motorcycle tire chains on eBay.
