SENIOR MOMENTS Name: Pauline Crutchley Age: 68 Location: Hagerstown, MD

To make this story flow, we first have to tell you the circumstances surrounding how we met Pauline Crutchley. Pauline entered the FLBD Hot Cougar contest at the 45th Street Taphouse during OC MD Bike Week. She simply wanted to enter and that’s what she did. Then something happened that none of us saw coming - Pauline won People’s Choice when the crowd stood and cheered her on through every round as only a room full of bikers can do. You had to be there. FLBD awarded Pauline a trophy that was almost as tall as she is. We went on to crown 1st, 2nd and two 3rd place (tied) winners but the highlight of the contest truly was Pauline and her fearless, fun-loving nature. Pauline first began riding when her son Danny bought a Harley and took his mom for a ride. To clarify, Pauline doesn’t currently own a bike but she hopes she will one day soon. Until then, she will continue to ride with her son who is active in the motorcycle community and enjoys participating in a number of charity rides with his girlfriend, Nannette. Pauline has been married to her husband, Guy Crutchley, for 6 years. They met at a dance at the Eagle Club in Brunswick, MD. She is a cashier at a Wal-Mart in Hagerstown, MD. Pauline lived in Germany for a short time where her ex-husband was stationed but now calls Hagerstown her home. Her favorite place to ride by motorcycle is Ocean City, MD and she enjoyed bike week very much. FLBD is going to keep tabs on Pauline and perhaps we can all help her celebrate when she finally gets that bike. Until then, if you see this vivacious woman out and about, be sure to give Pauline a thumbs up – the way only bikers can do.

Amelia Ryerse

98 Rock Personality, Avid Biker & Breast Cancer Awareness Advocate

1. How long have you been involved in radio? I recently celebrated 10 years as Baltimore’s 98 Rock 3-7 p.m. radio personality but have been in radio since 1996. I am blessed to be able to earn a living doing what I love to do.

7. If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Oceanographer. 8. If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? Oprah.

2. Where were you born and how did you end up here? I was raised in Laurel, Maryland but moved to New Mexico when I was 18. I stayed there for 13 years. It was in New Mexico that I began my radio career and completed my college education. I bounced around from state to state doing radio before finally moving back to work for 98 Rock.

9. What would you do if you were able to retire? Go on a permanent Motoquest. There are still places to travel on my list, including: Nova Scotia (next year), Great Ocean Road Australia (this December), Motoquest.com Tour of Japan, Pacific Coast Highway, and the loop of Alaska, Trail of the Ancients/Bicentennial Highway UT and Sturgis.

3. What was “coming home” like for you? I love my Maryland but realized that I had never viewed this state the way I viewed other states I had traveled through. When I earned my motorcycle license 8 years ago, I vowed to change that.

10. How did you become involved with Breast Cancer Awareness? The roads of Maryland weren’t the only discoveries I made while I was out riding. I also met many kind and generous people throughout the motorcycle community who reaffirmed my faith in humanity. I fell in with a crowd from Harford and Cecil County who have not only become great friends, but are the heart of an annual ride in Darlington - the Ace of Hearts which benefits the Red Devils of Maryland.

4. What would you consider your greatest extravagance? Travel. I love to ride. The only places I haven’t been in Maryland is Crisfield and Smith Island to see the Tangier Sound but that is on my list of places to go. I rode in Iceland, Costa Rica over the Panama border in a sidecar, Vancouver to Whistler BC, a moped in the Bahamas (yes it counts when you drive on the other side of the road), Tail of the Dragon/ The Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive (in one shot!), Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Million Dollar Highway/San Juan Skyway in Colorado, Ferry System of VA/NC to Ocrakoke Island, southern NJ coast, the Enchanted Circle and most of New Mexico. My favorite places to ride in Maryland are Falls Road north and all side roads into Pennsylvania, Cactoctin Mountain Skyway to 77 and the Black Marsh Refuge south of Cambridge.

11. What Is the Ace of Hearts and Red Devils? Both the Ace of Hearts and the Red Devils are dedicated to helping women in Maryland who suffer from breast cancer. For the past nine years, the ride commemorates those who have lost their battle while riding for survivors of breast cancer. We focus on raising funds for those who are going through debilitating treatment that prevents them from performing everyday tasks that those enjoying good health can often take for granted. The ride is a 50 mile loop through northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania and includes the assistance of volunteer fire departments in the small towns on the route. We couldn’t do it without them or the hundreds of people who show up every year that have somehow been touched by the horrible disease.

5. What is the most awesome thing you own? My motorcycle! I rode all through Maryland and I was inspired. I asked Mark Brown (Mark Brown Studios, Darlington, MD) to paint my bike. I told him my idea the Maryland flag waving down the side of the bike revealing icons of Maryland. Some of the icons came from photos I had (the turtles came from a photo I took at the Black Water Refuge). Mark added the city on the back fender, the jellyfish on the front fender and the little man in the lighthouse as a gift.

12. How has being involved with this cause affected you? I’ve met several women that the Red Devils have assisted and I carry their stories with me wherever I go for their courage, bravery and survival. 13. Where can we find more information? More information about Ace of Hearts and Red Devils can be found at www.aceofheartsride.org and www.the-red-devils.org, respectively. Want more Amelia? You can find her on Facebook at amelia98, via Twitter @amelia98 or at www.98online.com.

6. What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Question: Is Josh really like that? Answer: Yes!

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director A couple weeks ago my husband and I attended my Goddaughter’s wedding at the Outer Banks, North Carolina. While there we were able to meet up with a dear friend and ABATE member who now lives there. It was great reminiscing about the good old times in ABATE. Back in the day (25 years ago and beyond), ABATE was known by every biker around. They knew we protected their rights and did what was best for motorcyclists in Maryland. Every club belonged to ABATE. In many clubs, being a member of ABATE was a mandatory part of the club membership. My husband tells a story of going to a club meeting and speaking about ABATE. When he was finished, the club President stood up and said “before anyone leaves here, you will see this man and become a member of ABATE.” Of course, it wasn’t said that nicely. But you get the drift. One of the things my friend and I talked about was how great it was back in the day when everyone was afraid of bikers. You knew where you stood and you did what you were told. Kind of like the military. Bikers took care of each other. They valued their freedom and were damn well going to stand up for it no matter what it took. Almost all bikers back then were hard working people. Many were veterans and, basically, blue collar workers. Now riders come from every socioeconomic background. But somehow over the last 20 years, a lot has been lost by bikers. I don’t know why or how it started I just know that it happened. My friend said he thinks it is the lack of respect in general. We have become complacent over the years and just assumed that

we will always be free. ABATE has become complacent too. We are no different. We just assumed that we would always have lots of members and our parties, events, and bike shows would be sell outs as they had in the past. By being complacent, we didn’t seek change to bring us up to this century. We stood back and watched as hundreds of new clubs were formed (nothing wrong with that) and ABATE didn’t make sure we were part of those clubs. We kind of stood back and waited for them to invite us in. Of course, it didn’t work because they didn’t even know we existed. Suddenly, we aren’t the only game in town. Out of this discussion with my friend I had an epiphany. I realized that we just can’t sit back and wait for someone to come to us. We have to be out there everywhere in the biker/motorcycle community. We have to get the word out by making sure all clubs know who we are and what we do. We have to use social media more. We need to touch the younger generation, sports bike clubs, 1% clubs, riding clubs, women’s clubs and individual riders. Most of all we have to support each other. It’s good to sit down with old friends and reminisce. It’s even better to use that knowledge and better ourselves for the future. ABATE is working hard now to establish more chapters and recruit new members. We have a website (www.abateofmd.org) and a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AbateOfMarylandInc). I even have an iPhone! You will definitely be seeing more of us in the future. Every club and individual will know who we are. We have moved up to this century and we are stronger than ever.

45TH STREET TAPHOUSE • OCEAN CITY, MD

I survived! I made it through last month’s events in Ocean City, MD. I hope those of you who attended did as well. I noticed many of you partying it up on Friday night and taking it easier on Saturday. No worries. I understand you can’t party like a rock start all the time. I, on the other hand, had a great time meeting, dining, and drinking with some old familiar faces and plenty of new ones too. I left for my trip on Thursday this year (yes, I actually took two days off from work – scary, right?), and made it to OC in the late afternoon. I took advantage of the awesome weather and opted for the back roads to extend my ride. When I arrived in OC, I decided the first order of business would be to check out the weekend spot for FLBD, the 45th Street Taphouse. I grabbed a stool at the front bar (there are several bars within the 45th Street compound) and ordered a Fox Barrel Blackberry Pear Cider (so I was feeling a little fruity, don’t judge!). I’ve developed a fondness for the ciders lately. Maybe I’m buying into the new fad but whatever, I liked it. Eventually I needed something a little more manly so ordered the baconlicious burger (medium rare, or course). I was served a fresh burger topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce, and grilled onions served on a Hawaiian sweet bread. I have to say the burger was damn good. The flavors worked great and the side of freshly fried chips was a great pairing. After a few Crown and Cokes I called it an early night and headed to the FLBD condo.

On Friday night, I returned to the Taphouse but was so preoccupied I only had a chance to consume an order of wings. I selected Spicy Hot BBQ and they were exactly as they should be - crispy outside and juicy inside. The sauce wasn’t too heavy and had just the right amount of spice to heat them up. They went well with my constant consumption of Twisted Teas,

Fa s t L a n e B i k e r

served with a smile by my waitress Kori (I hope I spelled that right). Then came the FLBD Hot Cougar Contest which left no time for food (those cougars are WILD!), just more drinks.

I really couldn’t tell you what I had at the Taphouse on Saturday (maybe too much booze or maybe I’m just getting old), but I remember stealing some of Big Poppas scallops and rice. These were a recommendation from our waitress Kori (she was so lucky to have to deal with me twice!). The scallops were cooked to perfection and served with a side of rice, mushrooms, and what I think was bacon (or something definitely bacon-like). Regardless, it was tasty and the Crown and Cokes were flowing. Saturday night was also the wedding reception for the lucky Two Wheel Wedding Contest couple who were married on the main stage at the Inlet earlier, Brittany and Cale. There was plenty of dancing, drinking, contests and humorous band banter with BigPoppa. I don’t think I ever had an empty glass and who could ask for a better night! All in all the weekend was a blast (at least for me) with plenty of riding, eating, drinking and socializing. If you get the chance, stop into the 45th Street Taphouse and try something from their menu. I’m already committed to returning to check out other samplings since my diet for most of the weekend consisted mostly of Twisted Teas, Crown and Coke, and a few random beers. I highly recommend the Taphouse for friendly staff, fresh food, a very diverse selection of craft beers on tap, and a great view of the bay. A quick thanks to all the Taphouse staff for making our stay great and especially Kori for making sure I always had something to drink. If you have any questions, comments or recommendations, feel free to email me at jay@ flbdemlarva.com. Until next time, just remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

Recently, they announced their association with the American Motorcyclist Association (“AMA), an organization that is 75 years old with more than 235,000 members and supports family-oriented events and the love of motorcycle riding and racing. This year, members of The Hogs and Heroes Foundation raised over $15,000 at OC BikeFest. They look forward to the 2014 event where they will continue to ensure the safety of attendees and provide assistance wherever they can to make the event a success. One summer night, a young man spots a young woman at a bar. He recognizes her from the local grocery store where she worked. The next day, with the help of friends, he acquires her phone number. First there were texts, then they hung out. They both loved motorcycles. He purchased a Harley from Chesapeake HD and she bought her Harley from a friend of her stepfather so they could ride with each other, side by side. They already knew they wanted to be together always. A few years later, the couple walked to the pond behind the house they were preparing to move into one day. They took breakfast and coffee along for the walk. They talked about life and their soon to be new home. When breakfast was done they returned to the house, holding hands. Being a gentleman, he waved her up onto the front porch first. As she climbed the steps, she glanced back and saw him pull something from his pocket, a ring box. He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes. They sealed the deal with a kiss. One Friday afternoon they rode their bikes to Jumbo Jimmy’s Crab Shack in Port Deposit, MD. While they waited for their lunch, they noticed the stack of Fast Lane Biker Delmarva magazines and flipped through the pages, stopping at the ad for a Two Wheel Wedding contest. They looked at each other and said “Let’s do it!” and began the entry process. Five years after that fateful night at a local watering hole, Brittany MacDonald and Cale McConnaughy stood on the main stage at OC Bikefest in Ocean City, Maryland, waiting for the words that would bind them to each other for life. He stood with his groomsmen, his back turned away from where his bride would appear so as not to see her before the ceremony and risk “bad luck.” Her bridesmaids led the way. She arrived dressed in a traditional long white gown. She walked towards him, tapped him on his shoulder and he turned to see the love of his life for the first time that day. I was in the pit at the foot of the stage and, admittedly, I cannot read lips but I saw him form the word “beautiful.” Tears welled. Barefoot Bride co-owner and minister, Allison Sappington, performed the ceremony. The couple repeated some of the most beautiful and moving vows I had ever heard. Brittany, overwhelmed with emotion, stumbled over the words as she tried not to cry. I cried enough for the both of us. Approximately 50 family members and friends stood with me in the pit and there was hardly a dry eye among us. But then came the words we all waited for – I now pronounce you husband and wife. An eruption of applause, cat calls and cheers shook the concrete beneath me. It was only then that I turned to look out over a sea of bikers who took a moment out of their lives to witness this union of their brother and sister on two wheels, to congratulate them in true biker style, and to launch them into their married life in an unbelievable display of unity.

To everyone who attended... We thank you for being part of Brittany and Cale’s story. To everyone who made this union possible... We thank you for your unmatched generosity.

To Brittany and Cale McConnaughy... We wish you a long life of love, happiness 20 and not-too-bumpy roads.

Coastal Tented Events was responsible for the lounge and reception area and Salisbury’s Roadie Joes provided food and beverage to comfort pre- and post-marital nerves. Finally, a wedding reception was held at the 45th Taphouse who generously provided the happy couple with a $500 gift certificate to get the party started and we are happy to say the newlyweds did just that! All in all, it was a tremendous success with media coverage from local blogging to the Baltimore Sun and the Chicago Tribune. Radio interviews were buzzing with the news of the happy couple. Congratulations Brittany and Cale McConnaughy and many thanks to all the sponsors and particularly to Barefoot Bride of Ocean City for a job well done. Will there be a 2014 Two Wheel Wedding Contest? Can it be bigger and better? Check FLBD often to find out!

OWN THE NIGHT WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON ACCESSORY LED LIGHTING New h-d.com/store Website Offers 48 Brilliant LED Lighting Choices Motorcycling on dimly lit back roads presents significant challenges, from lurking deer to poorly marked corners and inattentive drivers. According to engineers at Harley-Davidson, installing LED motorcycle lighting is the fastest, easiest way to enhance visibility for harsh night-riding conditions. Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories offers 48 LED lighting accessories, including headlamps, auxiliary lamps, tail lamps and turn signals for almost all late-model Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and has grouped them together on its new h-d.com/store website at http:// www.harley-davidson.com/shop/led-motorcycle-lights. That page also features graphic and video demonstrations of the dramatic difference between incandescent and Harley-Davidson LED lighting performance. The output of Harley-Davidson LED headlamps and auxiliary lamps is brighter, whiter in color, and provides a superior light pattern compared to Original Equipment incandescent lamps. The solid-state LED lamps feature a shock- and vibrationresistant assembly that mounts into the existing light housing. Installation uses the factory headlamp wiring - no external ballast or complicated wire harness is required. The brilliant, fast-acting LED arrays used in Harley-Davidson accessory tail lamps and turn signals enhance the visibility of the motorcycle during day and night riding.

On Saturday, September 14, the first annual Ride-in Bike Show to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association was held at Perdue Stadium as part of Delmarva Bike Week. Thirty eight riders from all over the region entered the show and all of the bikes were amazing. The overall winner “Dead Man Riding”, chosen by the professional judges from Chuck’s Classic Cycles, was the 2004 skeleton chopper pictured here. The bike is owned by Frank Martin of Neptune, NJ. The people’s choice winner was the 2010 Led Zeppelin cruiser owned by Mike “Zeppelin” Bocklage of Baltimore, MD, sporting a beautiful paint job with Led Zeppelin band members pictured and a pumpin’ sound system cranking out the Zeppelin tunes! Thanks to all who entered and attended for supporting the Alzheimer’s Association and the Eastern Shore Walk To End Alzheimer’s. For more information on how you can help, visit www.alz.org/maryland.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com . www.cycleattorney.com Just when we thought it was safe to ride again!

driving while “texting”. During the course of their representation for the motorcycle accident, it came out that the driver of the car admitted that he was texting. As a result, charges were also brought against his girlfriend for texting him while he was driving. The case finally made its way to the Appellate Court where it was held that if it can be proven that a person knows that the individual they are texting is driving, then they may also be held liable for any damages caused.

Several years ago in New Jersey David K. was riding his motorcycle with his wife as a passenger. As he approached a bend in Whitehall Township they were struck by another driver who was operating a pick up truck and had come across the double yellow line. The impact was so severe that the collision severely altered the rest of their lives. Thankfully, they were fortunate enough to have survived the crash. Although I did not personally handle this motorcycle accident case, it is my understanding that they were well represented. The driver of the vehicle later pled guilty to using a cell phone while driving and failing to maintain a lane.

After reading about this case I reiterated to my children, who are 15 and 17 and seem to be glued to their cell phones, the seriousness of tragedies such as this. Though they may be sick of hearing me tell them about motorcycle accidents that are caused by people texting on their cell phones, I am going to continue to put these articles in front of them and continue to lecture them. Who knows, if I do it enough, it may begin to sink in.

I’m writing about this because just as I had previously written about drunk driving, we are now faced with what may be an even more dangerous problem,

Bottom line - don’t text and drive. My prayers go out to the injured motorcyclists, and the teenagers who learned a hard lesson. As usual, I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on these topic or others, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney. com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).
