RED ALERT

WHERE WILL YOU BE DURING DELMARVA BIKE WEEK? Once the sun goes down and the vendors and event venues close up shop, what are your plans? Don’t have any? I know we said that we were going to chill out during DBW for some much needed R&R. NOT!! We received a barrage of emails and phone calls asking where we were going to be and, in response, all we can say is: The party is ON!! Join Fast Lane Biker at the OFFICIAL DELMARVA BIKE WEEK AFTER PARTY at PARTY BLOCK, 17th and Ocean Highway, for the traditional fun antics Fast Lane Biker has been bringing your way for the past 4 years during DBW. You’ll have the same good time - only the venue has changed. There’s more room to accommodate those of you who patiently waited to get inside our event last Fall. So come on by Party Block for Live Music, Custom Bike Displays, Bike Builders, Games, Contests, Giveaways and more. You never know who will make an appearance so be sure to check us out for yourself! Join us on Friday, Sept. 14th, for live music by Great Train Robbery and cast your vote in the now notorious Fast Lane Biker Hot Cougar Contest featuring women 35+. No bikini necessary. Tastefully tawdry is the dress code. On Saturday, Sept. 15th, join us for live music provided by Rebelicious and dust off your finest biker attire for a chance to win prizes at the Fast Lane Biker Leather and Lace Ball. COME OUT FOR THE PARTY AT PARTY BLOCK!!

Maryland. DBW is the original event that has been successfully executed for the past 12 years and it is now, and has always been, a FREE Event. We applaud the Delmarva Bike Week Committee for continuing the tradition. When you look at all the milestone motorcycle events that are a “must do” at least once during a lifetime, you’ll hear Sturgis, Laconia, Myrtle Beach, Daytona and Delmarva Bike Week – all FREE events. Remember, free events can only stay free if the motorcycle community patronizes those events. Just so we are clear, the official Delmarva Bike Week locations are: HarleyDavidson of Seaford, Purdue Stadium, Winter Park Place and, of course, Seacrets. There will be a Fast Lane Biker Booth set up at each location so stop by to say hello, pick up your official event guide and let us know that you support free events. See you September 13th thru 16th at Delmarva Bike Week! Until then, keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

SENIOR MOMENTS Name: Ron & Mina Engle Age: 74 & 65, respectively Location: Ocean City, MD

Ron and Mina Engle each ride their own bikes. They divide their riding time between Ocean City, Maryland and Zephyrhills, Florida. Ron started riding in 1948, inspired after his local paper boy made his rounds on a 45cc Harley. Using a rowboat built by his grandfather as barter, Ron made a deal with the paperboy – Ron would do the paper route and the paper boy would use his boat.

chased the bike it was black and she quickly decided she preferred it in pearl white and had it painted to suit her. Mina also belongs to HOG and GWRRA as well as Women on Wheels. She likes to participate in many of the rides with WOW.

Ron bought his first Harley in Baltimore in 1956 where he was stationed with the Coast Guard. He continued to ride Harleys until 1984 when AMF took over Harley-Davidson. He then purchased a Honda Goldwing. Today, Ron owns a 2007 Honda Goldwing and a 2008 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic. He belongs to both HOG and GWRRA.

While traveling from Florida to Maryland, Ron and Mina attend rallies along the way in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. “It’s a great trip coming and going,” says Ron. The couple trailer their bikes back to Florida for the winter season and ride with several different groups every day. One of their riding friends is 84 and the other is 93 and they are both on two wheels. They have been through every state except three on their bikes.

Mina rides a 2009 Harley-Davidson Tri-Glide. She has been riding for 26 years and her first bike was a 1989 Honda 450 Rebel. She worked her way up to a 1996 Heritage Softail Classic, then a 2001 Heritage Softail Classic, and finally a 2009 trike due to a wrist injury. When Mina pur-

Bruce Bennett

MARKETING & PROMOTIONS • DELMARVA BIKE WEEK® Bruce Bennett turned a high school love of photography into an 18year romp in the newspaper business. In 2004, he left the publishing world to work for Delmarva Bike Week® and, eventually, to work for bike week sponsors Harley-Davidson of Ocean City and Harley-Davidson of Seaford. His favorite part of both jobs is spreading the excitement of riding motorcycles. However, what is most fulfilling is his work with Operation We Care and Adopt A GrandMa/GrandPa. Both programs provide a little “thank you” from the heart in an anonymous setting.

reminds me, it’s about time to go again. What a very cool cruise! 7) Where would you most like to reside if you could? I’m really happy here on Delmarva, except in the summer when it’s gets blistering hot and humid. Maybe Vermont would be cooler in the summer.

Bruce has been married for 15 years to his wife, Jinya, and is very proud of their son, Andy, a former Marine and current soldier in the Reserves. And yes, both of them take vacation to come work at Delmarva Bike Week®.

8) Who is your fictional hero? James Bond: doesn’t tolerate the bad guys and gets the chicks.

1) How long have you been involved with your business/occupation? I started working full time for Delmarva Bike Week in 2004, its fourth year. I have worked in many different parts of marketing for 18 years before that.

9) What is the most awesome thing you own? It would be a toss up between the Sables Station Wagon and my Harley - not really a toss up, is it?

2) What exactly do you do in that capacity? My role is ever changing, especially during the event. Basically you put out fires and work to make things run as smoothly as possible. It could run from helping a vendor, to helping the parking crew, to watching for businesses trying to weasel in. There is never a dull moment. The other 360 days of the year you sort of do the same thing, but on a less immediate schedule.

10) What is the question you are most often asked? Where are the bathrooms? Funny, but it’s true during the event. After that would be something about Cruzin The Coast Pin Run. 11) If you could choose any other occupation, what would that be? Professional golfer, but since I’ve only played about three times in the last eight years I don’t think there is a future for me there.

3) Where were you born? I’m a native of Seaford, Delaware.

12) If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would that person be? I think I would like to switch places with a Big League baseball player. There is plenty of money, little bit of travel, cool cities and a couple of months off in the winter.

4) Where do you currently reside and for how long? I’m still here on Delmarva and have been for more than 40 years. 5) What do you like/admire most about yourself? I’m most proud of what tremendous people my wife and son are, and then after that my involvement with Operation We Care and, around the holidays, with Adopt a GrandMa/GrandPa.

13) What would you do if you were able to retire? I would be like the snow birds: Go south in the winter and north in the summer. I would enjoy riding my motorcycle WITHOUT dealing with the business side of it.

6) What would you consider your greatest extravagance? My greatest extravagance is having gone on the High Seas Rally three times - which

by Steve Strohmier As summer is winding down we are still in the middle of some of our best riding times. We at ABATE are no different and are enjoying some great rides together, even though some of the rides were on days that were hot as the hinges of hell. Check out our calendar on the ABATE of Maryland website, www. abateofmd.org, and see if there is a chapter ride or event coming up in your area and join in. There is almost always something going on and some of the events in other areas of the state are well worth attending. Along with the riding summer is also when the Executive Board of ABATE starts their two year terms and the chapter officers start their one year terms. You can check on the website for your particular chapter and see who is in office although I would hope you already know because you were at the meetings. At the State level we have several new officers. Michele Holcomb, of the Carroll County Chapter, has taken

over the helm, or handlebars as it were, as the new State Director. Our new State Legislative Representative is John Robinson from the St Mary’s County Chapter. Lenny Holcomb, from Carroll County, will be the Asst. Legislative Representative. Scott Rice of the Charles County Chapter has taken over the duties as Membership Secretary. Neal Ackerson has moved from Director to Chairman of the Board. Merrill Paden, from the Baltimore/Harford Chapter, will be staying on as Treasurer and Linda Wainer, of the Lower Shore Chapters, will remain as Recording Secretary. We wish all the officers the best and are sure they will do a great job for the motorcyclists of Maryland. We also want to thank those officers who are leaving after their terms. Special thanks also go out to Annie Sanford who will be leaving her post as Office Manager. Annie’s energy, commitment, and efficiency will be missed as will her ready smile.

SQUIRE

1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com . www.cycleattorney.com Upon being hired, our expert and his team went to the scene of the accident where they surveyed the site, took video and still photographs and conducted interviews with all of the witnesses including the ambulance staff, who are good sources of information, as they are usually the first on the scene.

As many of you know our law firm has focused its practice on handling motorcycle accidents for over twenty years and although we strive to take cases where the liability is clear, there are certain cases where although the liability may be clear to us, it is not clear to the other insurance company. As a result, we are often forced to file a lawsuit against the at fault vehicle.

However, there are two sides to the story, once defense counsel became aware that we had hired a reconstructionist, they went out and hired their own motorcycle reconstructionist to put together a report in an attempt to discredit our experts report. It so happened that both experts knew each other, which is not uncommon in this field.

We do this primarily for two reasons; 1) because the offer the insurance company is making is too low based upon their version of liability and/or 2) an out right denial of liability. Depending on the facts, we then retain a motorcycle accident reconstructionist to help us put together a report which lays out, in their expert opinion, how the accident occurred, and who was at fault.

Long story short, regardless of the facts, once we were scheduled for trial and after a series of settlement conferences which included the Judge who would be trying the case, the case ultimately settled for an amount everyone was pleased with.

For example, I recently resolved a claim wherein my client was riding home from work in central PA and was taking a route that he has taken every day. Although he knew the road had curves in it, as he came around a right-sided curve and continued to travel within the speed limit, a vehicle pulled out of a driveway directly in front of him, causing him to apply his brakes and swerve in order to avoid a direct t-bone with the car. The other driver, who had lived in this home for many years and was well aware of the curvature of the road, pulled directly from her driveway into my client’s path of travel, causing the accident to occur. As a result, my client suffered permanent loss of smell and taste along with a broken shoulder and wrist, both of which required surgery.

It is not often that we are required to hire a motorcycle accident reconstructionist, however, when and if this situation arises, it is extremely important that the attorney you have retained has not only has experience handling motorcycle accidents, but also knows exactly where to look to find an experienced motorcycle expert who can deliver a report that not only supports their clients position, but the expert must also have the requisite skill to explain his findings to a Jury, if the matter goes that far, and be able to do so in a manner that the jury can understand and appreciate.

Although the defendant’s insurance carrier reimbursed my client for the damages to his motorcycle, once we made a demand for his injuries, it became very clear with the first offer that the insurance company was not taking our demand seriously.

As always, if upon reading this material you have any questions regarding this topic or any others, please feel free to contact me at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-2925352).

Suit was filed and we retained a motorcycle accident reconstructionist to begin the process of putting together a report that could be used to support our client’s version of how the accident happened.

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only “Cycle Attorney”

2012 HONOR RIDE AND WEEKEND OF REMEMBRANCE Photos by StarPhotos of VA Although rain seemed to plague the immediate surrounding area, deep in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley there were blue skies and perfect riding weather as bikers came out to support the 2012 Honor Ride and Weekend of Remembrance, August 10th thru 12th at host locations Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson and Valley Cycle Center in Winchester, VA.

The goal of this event is to honor fallen law enforcement officers and insure that their dedication and sacrifice to their nation, state, town and community will not be forgotten. It is also a fundraising and awareness event and 100% of the net proceeds benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The NLEOMF supports the National Fallen Officers Memorial and upcoming National Law Enforcement Museum, in Washington, DC. Both the Memorial and Museum are publicly funded. Attendees were treated to a weekend of entertainment, exhibitions and demonstrations courtesy of Duffy Kane and the Freedom Train, Poverty Ridge, Left Stronger and Engine 14, Central Florida Motorcycle Drill Team, Schuylkill Haven Motorcycle Drill Team, Fairfax County Police Motorcycle Unit, Fredrick County K-9 Unit, vendors and more. Lucky raffle winners rode off with more than $15,000 in merchandise including more than 2 dozen Scala Rider Communication Systems, a custom-made, 3-D helmet from Devil Tail Designs, Big Boy heavy duty wheel jockey, Yuasa battery tenders, custom commemorative gifts courtesy of Products for Good, merchandise and gift cards courtesy of Jake Wilson, and much more. The event came together beautifully and anyone who attended had nothing but kind words and great reviews. On Sunday, more than 250 motorcyclists came out for the police-escorted ride. Pastor DeLaughter of the Christian Motorcycle Association performed the blessing and Delegate Randy Minchew was guest speaker as well as a ride participant. Upon arrival at the memorial, John Shanks, Executive Director of Police Relations for the NLEOMF, drove home the message that we cannot forget those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Participants were given the opportunity to wander the grounds of the memorial and visit the site of the upcoming Law Enforcement Museum, scheduled to open in 2014. For some it was a first visit. Others who never knew the memorial existed stood in awe. “What a beautiful tribute,” said Lenore Williams who traveled with friends from upstate Pennsylvania. “I have two relatives whose names are engraved on these walls and I never knew it was here.” Now she does. Now so do you.

After several brief showers it was time for some fun, music, food, drinks and friends. Bikers came out to the 460 Road House Bike Night to welcome Jesse Ray & The Blackwater Bandits to the stage. The band kept the joint moving with some awesome country and classic rock music. In addition to hot bikes, there was a surprise visit from the one and only Captain Mango and his lovely wench, Karen. Several stunning Hot Cougars came by and you’ll be seeing many of them in future issues of Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva. All in all it was another great bike night and a good time was had by all. Remember you can stop by 460 Road House anytime. They are open 7 days a week from 11a.m. until 2 a.m. and feature daily food specials. DJ/Karaoke provided by R & D Entertainment begins at 9 p.m. Call Sandy or Aaron at (540) 343-0090 if you have a special event to plan or to find out what’s on the entertainment schedule. We hope to see everyone on September 22nd for the last bike night of the season. We plan to end it with one heck of bang so join us for music, food, drink and, of course, hot bikes and babes. Until the next time, ride safe and keep the rubber side down.

Malinda

We met September’s Hot Cougar, Malinda Miller, during OC Spring Bike Week at Trader Lees. Malinda is a homemaker with 4 children, ages 11 thru 20. She celebrated her 21st wedding anniversary in April. Malinda loves the biker lifestyle. “Along with being part of the biker community comes a huge, new extended family! Malinda is 38 years young.
