When we decided to publish FLBD, our goal was to bring a little levity, a little news, a little naughtiness, etc., to our readers. We wanted to mix things up. For example, we wanted to show you that you could still ride after 60 and have fun doing it. We wanted to show you that you could still be part of a photo spread in a magazine even if you were 35+. We wanted to bring you tips, bikerfriendly eateries, tidbits about personalities in the local biker community. We wanted to share our road experiences with you by covering events we attended. There’s more but you get the drift. This year, something different happened. We were able to bring a young man and a young woman, both riders, both Harley owners, together forever. It is so incredible to imagine that when they tell the story to their children, and to their grandchildren, about how they were married on the Main Stage during bike week in Ocean City, MD, they might say something about “BigPoppa” or “Miss Caroline” and some crazy antic or good-time or memory. How incredible is that? We encourage as many of you as possible to come out to the Inlet on Saturday, 9/14 at 4:45 p.m. to witness the union of Cale & Brittany and cheer them on so they can tell that story over and over. We’ll be taking lots of photos to help them out with their wedding album so be sure to stop by the FLBD tent under the big top to wish these kids well and get your photo taken – be part of their happily ever after! If you’d like to continue partying with FLBD, Ainsley Max (our stunning cover model), Cale, Brittany and the rest of the wedding party, we’ll see you at the 45th Street Tap House beginning at 9:00 p.m. Live

SENIOR MOMENTS Name: Tony Pannuty Age: 79 Location: Matinsburg, WV

Tony Pannuty has always been known to be a man living in the fast lane. Ask anyone who knows him an you’ll repeatedly get the same answers – He’s a man who will look you in the eyes when he speaks to you, sign every deal with a firm hand shake, and if he tells you something you can take it to the bank because he’s a man of his word. Tony was born the son of Edith and Augustino Pannuty in the small town of Falling Waters, WV. One of 9 children, Tony was determined to move on with life and at the tender age of 15 he decided to make something of himself. He set out with $5.00 and a ton of dreams that he would ultimately fulfill with style. Through the years, he worked for Bethlehem steel, drove tanker trucks, became a painter and performed a multitude of other jobs before successfully opening and operating many of his own businesses including The Dell Bar, The Glen Lounge, The Disco Inferno, a gas station, a bakery and deli, a car lot and finally, Tony’s Auto Service, home of “Twisted” in Martinsburg, WV. Tony’s love of “toys” and the joy, fun and adrenalin that came from being around them started with his 1936 Indian motorcycle. Over the years, Tony would also acquire many Harleys, Big Dogs, Titans, speed boats, motorhomes, race cars, race horses, muscle cars, a T- Rex and more. His need for speed kept him on his toes and dreaming of new and better ideas that eventually led him to building three different trikes - The “Mac Daddy,” of course, is our featured bike, Twisted. Enjoying life as only Tony knows how and traveling as much as he did, would lead Tony to meet many people from various walks of life along the way. He befriended many, like Jim Keedy of Keedy’s Body Shop in Pasadena, MD, Travis Hess of Buckey’s LTD in Martinsburg, WV, Terry Sinkey of MD and Steve Flemming of Martinsburg, WV who helped Tony make Twisted possible. With 500 H.P. hidden wheelie bars, great paint, boat headers that are hooked up and lots of pretty chrome, Twisted truly is an original. Twisted took about 5 months for Tony and his friends to complete. Even at 79 years old, Tony and Twisted can be found just about anywhere on the east coast. He spends most winters in Florida and summer in West Virginia and the surrounding areas so he’s able to ride all year round. Be sure to stop by and visit Tony and Twisted during OC BikeFest at the inlet where both will be on display. If you’re lucky, Tony may share a story or two with you!

ourselves. We were ensuring our future as a motorcyclist. But now, we are so busy attending charity events for someone else that we have thrown the unity and brotherhood stuff out the window. If we don’t soon stop and take a look at ourselves and see what we are doing, we will be so fragmented that we will have no power at all. Sadly, if we continue down the same road, there will be no motorcyclists represented in Annapolis or Washington, D.C. We have so much educational and legislative work ahead of us. We have to declare that we are all in as one unit. We cannot fall to the many distractions that lead to Divided We Fall. We must stand united and continue to protect our rights as motorcyclists. Unite and stand up and protect yourself for a change. Become an ABATE member and help us help you.

The message of history is simple. If we do not work together, united, our mission will not be accomplished. While recently riding with a fellow motorcyclist, he made a statement that stuck in my mind - he believes motorcycle events are not as successful as they were years ago because we are so fragmented in our beliefs. I had to sit and think about what he said and finally came to the conclusion that he is absolutely right. Motorcyclists have divided into so many different directions that we just can’t seem to get anything done for ourselves. We are divided into groups that have different purposes. There are riding clubs, charity clubs, clubs against child abuse, HOG clubs, trike clubs, Goldwing clubs, military clubs, women’s clubs, 1% clubs and the list goes on. We are so divided that we have forgotten that we are all part of one group, motorcyclists. We are so busy trying to please someone else in order to prove to others that we are not the big bad ass bikers that we have been portrayed on TV and in the movies, that we have lost sight of ourselves. We have lost sight of the unity and brotherhood that we are always searching for. Motorcycle clubs began on those principles of unity and brotherhood by taking care of one another and always making sure that we support each other. But somehow over the years we have lost sight of taking care of ourselves. Thirty years ago every biker I knew was an ABATE member. They joined ABATE before anything else. Even when we became club members, part of that membership included being an ABATE member. We knew that by being an ABATE member we were taking care of 9

Apple Mountain Motorcycle Rally Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Successfully! By Bill Carpenter Despite Mother Nature’s best efforts, approximately 10,000 folks celebrated the 10th anniversary of a little get-together called Apple Mountain East Coast Bike Rally in Little Orleans, MD (off season population: 42). A scant decade ago, Apple Mountain campground owner Ken Appel decided he would bring the fun of Sturgis a little closer to those of us on the east coast and the rest, as they say, is history. Since Momma Nature decided to rain on our parade, err... rally, there wasn’t as much riding as we usually accomplish but between the vendors, the Saturday events (Slow Ride, Weenie Bite and Motorcycle Demolition Derby), daily 5 o’clock Boobie PaBill’s Place (R.I.P. Bill Schoenadel), boredom an issue. The only downside I can say about (besides the rain) was the crowding. It’s not an issue, but there seemed to be a greater of large RV’s compared to previous years. See y’all again next year!

Ainsley Max roared onto the motorcycle scene in 2012 and hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t slowed down since. ROLLING wITHTHE BIG DOG'S Civil War Battlefields: Antietam & Gettysburg by Carlos ‘Big Dog’ Campos

For most Red Blooded Americans the Civil War was historically the most traumatizing war in our developing nation’s history. As a country we were divided on many issues. Because of this, more American lives were lost during this war than any other before it or since. Brothers and cousins, sometimes fathers and sons often found themselves looking down the barrels of their rifles at each other. The hope of a peaceful resolution was out of the question. Being so close to these 2 pivotal Battlefields, residents of Maryland, Pennsylvania & Virginia love to visit these places and reflect on what these wars meant to our great country. We recognize that the cost of war in human lives was not worth it. This is not an editorial though. I wish to tell you about a route that connects these 2 places and invite you to reflect on why wars continue to occur. As you ride, realize that the loss of even one human life is too great a price to pay for not being able to work out differences with other human beings. This run takes you through some very scenic by-ways. You’ll cross valleys and climb hills and at the half way mark, I’ve out lined a short jaunt to High Rock, a favorite destination for local riders. The road winds and twists along for just over 50 miles. It traverses forests, agricultural land and crosses several streams along the way. Both Battlefields have museums and offer guided tours that are well worth the price of admission. These guides are far better versed on these topics and their description of the timeline of events truly transports you back in time by painting an awesome picture in your mind’s eye. In fact, if you ever get the opportunity to see one of the re-enactments of these battles, seize it. The ultimate price that was paid by these soldiers really gets punctuated every time you hear the rifles and especially the cannons fire. This route begins at the Antietam Battlefield and ends at the Gettysburg Battlefield. Let me give you a little bit of historical background on these “turning point” battles. The Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest day in American history. But it also had two strategic consequences. Although considered a tactical draw between the Army of the Potomac and the much smaller Army of Northern Virginia, it marked the end of Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North. One of his goals was to entice the slave-holding state of Maryland to join the Confederacy, or at least recruit soldiers there. He failed in that objective; he also failed in marshaling Northern fears and opinions to pressure a settlement to the war.

Run Distance: 52 miles, if you stick to the BDMT route. Approximate Time: 1 hr. 35 min, during the weekend. During the week, there is very little local traffic. You may encounter a tractor rolling down the road going from crop to crop but other than that, the time is about the same. Type of roads: Mostly 1 lane coming and one lane going. The speed limit ranges from 35-55 mph. High Rock is your primary vista point, hills, valleys and historic landmarks. There are museums and guided tours to be had. Primary roads: State Road #34, #66, #64, #491, #16 & #116. Alternate scenic routes: PenMar / High Rock Rd. Key note: Be mindful of the fact that these are National Parks and worthy of our respect. Honor the fallen with your reflection and efforts for peaceful resolution to all human conflicts. We are who we are, thanks to their ultimate sacrifices.

We’ve been having a few weeks of interesting weather that included some unseasonably mild days that were perfect for riding. I hope you were able to get out and enjoy them. I did and while I was out there blowing through several places of interest, I stumbled into a hole in the wall bar that I think most of you will like.

The menu is basic and simple: crab dishes, shrimp dishes, chicken wings, chicken fingers and other typical bar food. I ordered a miller lite can, a bowl of cream of crab soup, and a crab cake sandwich. My soup arrived steaming in a large bowl. It was rich and creamy and full of crab meat. It lasted about 2 minutes, especially after I added a few shakes of old bay seasoning. My crab cake was fried to perfection on a soft burger bun and was full of meat with very little filler. I opted to top mine with cocktail sauce and nothing else. I didn’t want to allow the flavor of the crab to escape. I was really surprised that a small bar like this could have such great food. This is exactly the type of place I love to discover while enjoying a ride.

One random Sunday, I headed down Route 9 and found myself in Port Penn, Delaware. More specifically, I rode into Kelly’s Tavern. This little bar is tucked on a corner directly across from the Delaware Bay. An old bar with basic tables and chairs lined the room. Kelly’s serves crabs every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday - freshly

Looking at Kelly’s Tavern from the outside one would never expect to find such culinary delights at reasonable prices. I enjoyed it so much that I plan to incorporate Kelly’s into one of my “normal” stops. I highly recommend you stop by the next time you find yourself riding down Rte. 9. The cost also varies from a low of $32.00 per year for $2,000.00 worth of coverage from an internet insurance company to $200.00-$400.00 per year for $5,000.00-$10,000.00 worth of coverage through more traditional insurance companies. Unfortunately, many of my clients no longer have private health insurance through their employers and therefore if they are involved in a motorcycle accident are often left with staggering medical bills and no insurance to pay them. This is the reason I suggest that if you have no private health insurance you get on the phone with your agent and purchase whatever amount of Medical insurance you can on your motorcycle, no matter what the costs. Although it is virtually impossible to purchase enough medical insurance on your motorcycle policy to cover all potential
