Shenyang is an important industrial center in China. It has been focused heavily in aerospace, machinery, defense, and recently on software, automotives, and electronics. At its peak in 1970s, Shenyang was among the top three industrial centers of China. Despite the 1980’s economic downturn, the city has revived significantly in recent years. By understanding the city’s rich history and current technological advancements, there are 3 major aspects for this development. The first aspect is to optimize urban master planning; maximize and ease accessibility to and from the development. The second aspect is for the urban development to become the epitome of its kind in the city of Shenyang. The third aspect, and the concept for this whole development, is “timelessness”. With that concept in mind, the development was designed carefully to carry the theme down to the very details. The idea for the design was for the final product to be compatible for all the years to come; hence the concept of “timelessness”. The four seasons are often used to delineate the concept throughout the project.
The element of “water” is used as the main vehicle to express the “timelessness” concept. It is a constantly reoccurring theme throughout the project. Inside the MiXC, a graceful, sweeping arc, resembling the shape of a fish and its movements, reveals its array of tenants, spanning its entire length. The skylight pulsates and undulates like the ripples on an ocean wave. It floods the spaces below with natural light, accenting the main circulation path through the space. At the center of the showcase, is an open and airy core where escalators crisscross at 6 levels. When looking above from the first level, at a worm’s eyed view, the crisscrossing escalators depict water that cascades down a cylindrical circulation core. A department store, ten-screen multiplex cinema, and internationally renowned anchors, and restaurants lend to the unparalleled variety of retailers within the MiXC.

Two towers bookend the site across two parcels. With the retail taking the 100% corner in the north-east, the landmark office tower rises in the north-west to take the prominent street address. The circulation movement along a sweeping curve extends the energy to the south parcel, where the apartment towers mark the south end. With the office tower rising as the vertical landmark, the residential towers take a horizontal approach to embrace the mall as it ends in the south. The residential towers are placed in a separate parcel in the west for ease of ownership and located to avoid casting shadows to adjacent towers.

Through the use of Revit modeling, building intricate curtain wall forms were achieved more successfully than using older methods. The amount of materials used were easily quantifiable with Revit.

北 京 凯 莱 大 酒 店 改 扩 建 COFCO GLORIA PLAZA HOTEL . BEIJING
The architectural design strives to blend in with the surroundings. The use of stone in the main body suggests a sense of permanence and formality, in keeping with the context. Metal fins on top of the stone add the sophistication and depth to the skin. The ends of the building act as the front face offering an iconic expression. The full glass window provides maximum views for the executive suites. The expression of a growing tree will articulate the sustainable design for the project as a brise-soleil, providing shade. 概念设计

Xiao Lin Road is the major link from the city center, which flanks the southern edge of the project site. Coming from the city center from the west, Parcel A5 serves as the gateway into the project. Parcel A5 is the site for CATIC Tian Hong’s new branding concept, specialty boutique shops. The round featured tower captures pedestrians to the public plaza and filters them through the rest of the project. Traversing down Xiao Lin Road, across the Huang Cang Jing River is where another public plaza between Parcel A5 and A6 is created with a meandering path along Kunbei Road. The riverfront specialty restaurants connect the river to the commercial and residential buildings, allowing for views, overlooking areas, and pedestrian trails. As the project site spans 3 parcels, a variety of building types and functions are combined to make the experience of walking down Xiao Lin Road as interesting and as diverse as possible. Parcel A6 is located in a 5-level shopping, including several junior anchors and a number of retail shops, a cineplex and restaurants The residential towers are also within the parcel, along with a 4-star hotel with service apartments directly above. The southeast corner of A6 and southwest corner of A7 is where the major public plaza resides. Centrally located, it is an extension of Zizhu Road (pedestrian street), which captures and filters people towards the retail mall at Parcel A6 and to the retail village at Parcel A7. The plaza serves as a major venue for many outdoor activities and public gathering for the neighborhood residents and shopping pedestrians. Continuing down Xiao Lin Road, Parcel A7 houses the village retails, office tower, residential towers, and Hypermarket. The village retails are essentially outdoor lifestyle shopping at a small scale, with small retail tenants and restaurant tenants, serving the residences in the neighborhood. The Hypermarket, conveniently serves as a local amenity for the residences in the area.

Yiwu is located 100km south of the city Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province. The nearest city to Yiwu is Dongyang. The area, as in most of the Province of Zhejiang, is in a mountainous region. The main goal in the design of this building was to tie in the context with the hopes of being a hub for various activities. It was very important to connect to the surroundings and be respective to the park and river on the south side. The challenge was to blend in with the context yet be able to stand out and hope to sustain itself for the years to come. Through exhaustive design options, the client finally narrowed their choice to our “bending river” scheme because of its natural qualities and its relation to the river south to the site. The design is very unified and fluid with undulating curves. The idea through the design was to weave the 2 main materials together while maintaining its solidity.

Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China’s Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China’s economic liberalization under the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, the area became China’s first—and arguably one of the most successful—Special Economic Zones. Shenzhen’s novel and modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the late 1970s, when it was a small fishing village. Since then, foreign nationals have invested more than US$30 billion for building factories and forming joint ventures. It is now reputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Being southern China’s major financial center, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the third busiest container port in China, ranking only after Shanghai and Hong Kong. Three masterplanning schemes were generated and it was very important to keep the context in mind because there are two significant mountains on each side of the project. The site is seen as a connecting node for the two mountains. christie kang | rtkl | shum yip 43

This private residence sits on a site with varying elevations. We were able to build into the hillside to create a large front yard space on top of the new two-car garage. An extension of the front yard was possible by use of in situ retaining walls on caissons. The finished floor of the house sits 12 feet above street level giving unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean from any room. Previously, views could only be seen from one room. Adding elevated green plateaus in the front and rear yards allowed us to create a transparent jewel-box surrounded by emerald terraces. The main idea of this project was to create a hierarchy between different spaces and for those spaces to come together at one gathering and consensual focal point. It was a challenge to seamlessly marry the existing traditional language with the new. This was a collaborative project between my partner and me. We were both commissioned to design this project, from the exterior to the casework. As it is true in many states that are adjacent to the ocean, this project especially took a significant amount of time due to very stringent local jurisdictions. 1. entry 2. living room 3. dining room 4. kitchen 5. pantry / w&d 6. powder room 7. den / nook 8. master bedroom 9. master bathroom 10. master walk-in closet 11. bedroom 1 12. bathroom 13. bedroom 2 14. jack-and-jill bathroom 15. bedroom 3 16. pool and spa 17. bbq deck 18. wooden deck 19. wooden deck / porch

Previously, this single family home consisted of 1 master bedroom and 2 smaller rooms. The house had no views to the ocean because it was set back so far away from the street. Programmatically, we wanted to have the private spaces grouped together and have a node where those spaces fluidly became the public area. The open space between the berm and the home creates an intimate atmosphere due to the smaller scale pool, yet it could be a lively scene for the inhabitants.
