beyond all issues on site, climate and culture, this project starts with the very first notion about a dwelling: human home, is the one and the only place he owns in the whole world; in fact, it is his very own WORLD within the WORLD. the transition between these two WORLDs, is the point this project begins. the “passageway in this project, is the path that takes a person to his World; moments of walking in it, are moments of perceiving the sense of dwelling.
FatemehShirpour.Work
since Puerto Ricans’ intimacy, sociability and warmth only seek a shade, a point, a circle to bloom, each passageway, more than being an access tool, acts as a node in the middle of four units to connect the residents.

sitting has a small part in the broad act of “staying still, therefore, a bench can respond to many more needs associated with staying still; a bench can be a space. based on the needs of Art and Architecture school, this bench is designed to be a space of solitude for reading, drawing and thinking. while maintaining the connection with outside, this bench forms a personal shell for self discovery and internal focus. the act of sitting itself, is not an act to be forced to user in some certain way, at the same time, consideration of variation of human behavior adds an excessive complexity to a project. in this project, the simple geometry of a circle allows the bench to be produced using only one set of molds but to be positioned in many different angels in order to offer the users a variety of sitting positions.

through each moment of existence, human inhabits a world, in which there is already “Something” and within that “Something”, there is him, conducting a life. the moment he doesn’t get comfort from the environment, he makes a tweak, in order to live peacefully.

he makes this “tweak”, where there is already “Something”; but that something is just what he has in his imagination. in fact, human inhabits an imagination, which is the limit of his experience in this world, and affects the way he interacts with his environment and the way he interacts with himself. this imagination doesn’t always come from within the people. the image people inhabit, is conveyed to them through words and communications. Only some people see the unseen layers of the world and are able to have a personal image of the world and in fact, a personal world.
(kids of Aleppo have found ways to have fun in the ruins of their city)
FatemehShirpour.Work
the city of Aleppo in Syria, is the oldest city of the world which has always had life in it, through thousands of years. in the heart of Aleppo, there is a complex of Bazaar, mosques and schools, beside the Grand Citadel and in the Aleppo old town, which is partially destroyed and burnt through years of the Civil War. Bazaar, is one of the interesting parts of this region’s architecture, since it is all about people and their presence in the place and the only valuable aspect of it, is the life in it; a public life that is vital for people’s mentality and health.
SenseOfShelter
46
the project tries to make an image of all valuable layers of the life in the ruins of Aleppo, that are not easily seen. developing around the old bazaar, the structure of this shelter lets the old building to lean to it and survive until the time it can be reinforced and preserved; this new structure can be a shelter for a temporary market and public space to let the vibrant life of the city go on.

Salvador Dali’s egg shell with fully grown human inside it, can be interpreted as a womb for giving birth to one’s “emotional and intellectual potentialities”. “birth is only one particular step in a continuum which begins with conception and ends with death. all that is between these two poles is a process of giving birth to one’s potentialities, of bringing to life all that is potentially given in the two cells. but while physical growth proceeds by itself, if only the proper conditions are given, the process of birth on the mental plane, in contrast, does not occur automatically. it requires productive activity to give life to the emotional and intellectual potentialities of man, to give birth to his self. it is part of the tragedy of the human situation that the development of the self is never completed; even under the best conditions only part of man’s potentialities is realized. man always dies before he is fully born.”

libraries are such lonely places. you never know who is reading what. you never get exposed to what really is inside those books unless you open them one by one. this project tries to make such graceful place more exciting and to expose what is happening inside books and what people are absorbing. the library library, is a library of digital screens, each one of the digital screens is in fact a library of limitless books in pdf. having the books on the screens as limitless resource lets people read in groups, be exposed to what others are reading and more importantly make a more dynamic place for readers, giving them the possibility of walking through the pages. of different books and “get to know what they don’t know”.

what distinguishes a river from the rest of the city is its natural energy, movement and sound, which has been said in old myths that can have meditating effect; people in old times believed that singing to water would take away your sorrows. this bridge project, more than being a connection between two sides of the river, tries to embrace the essence of the river and to capture and echo the sound of the river through tunnels on the water.
FatemehShirpour.Work TheRiverAccompaniment
98
instead of only passing by the river, the tunnels let people walk along with the water and in the direction of the river. the program designed for this bridge is a music school. the tunnels of this bridge are the spaces for practicing music, where the students have the river as their accompaniment and the public get to listen to the music as they pass through the bridge.

JubileeWorldÂŽ- outburst
FatemehShirpour.Work JubileeWorldÂŽ- outburst
124
each person has a world based on his experience, imagination and thoughts and a city is a mix and overlap of all its people’s worlds and that is what makes a city the place of availabilities, possibilities and as a result, the place of GROWTH. thus, the spirit of a city is the immaterial relationship in the air, which mostly indwells in between the buildings. the body of a city though, should be capable of an interchange. as simple as a window, giving its light, sound, smell and warmth to outside world, the buildings can share their lives with the city. in a city like St. Louis, the window which could give its life to the city, is suddenly alienated and the life of the buildings are imprisoned inside, since the city is shaped based on dividing, not sharing. today, this divorce of the buildings and the city is causing serious social issues, while there is still the possibility of sewing the parts and pieces to each other.
author’s thesis
FatemehShirpour.Work JubileeWorld®- outburst
126
“when the isolation of man from things becomes destroyed: in that moment we discover the wonder of relationship between man and things. the moment in which we become aware of the fullness of life by cooperative action... the relationship between things and within things are of greater importance than the things themselves. one can express this awareness of relationships and one can also predict how they may develop.” therefore, no matter dense or spread out, the city is about the relationships inside and between the buildings and not the physical forms.
- the CIAM discourse on urbanism, 1928-1960, Eric Mumford

the project is trying to share the life of an existing building with the city. the selected site is located in an under served neighborhood in North St. Louis; the neighborhood is a food desert area, has very high crime rate and lacks basic facilities such as park, public space, library etc. the studied building is from 1843, formerly an orphanage; it has been recently bought by an international non- profit music and performing arts organization, named: Jubilee World. the organization is currently renovating the building and plans to open a school of music and performing arts, bringing in students from under served communities of all over the world. on the same block, there is an elementary school and an elderly living building.

holding on to the programs and the existing buildings on the site, the proposal would try to overlap the activities on the block as much as possible. with having the music center as the core of this complex, the scale of the empty space of the block and also the buildings would be broken to resemble the scale of dwellings in the neighborhood. defining a new relationship between the buildings on this block and between this block with the rest of the neighborhood, the space in the middle of the buildings will become a public space which would always have the live music, being played, as an event.
