Street Art Switzerland/New York

“Living in both the United States and Switzerland has afforded me many opportunities which led to the plurality of my “Street Art” series. As an artist, I gain enormous insight and inspiration traveling from country to country, from city streets to country roads, up through mountain passes and down towards the ocean. These experiences leave me full of ideas and full of hope. An idea for a painting begins long before the paintbrush is ever picked up. What I see outside is what I bring indoors to my canvas. Every day I rush to my studio in an attempt to transfer all of my ideas from thoughts to art. The stark differences between the breathtaking sceneries of the Swiss landscape – the lakes, mountains, and valleys that fill my heart with awe and charge my imagination with color - and the imposing New York City concrete jungle - the art capital of the world; so infused with energy that it is coined the city that never sleeps – melt away when I pick up my brush and start to paint. That is the gift of abstraction; the paring down of forms into the raw feelings gathered from experiences and translated by the artist into mesmerizing colors, movement, and shapes. This body of work aims to capture the innate beauty of two places I profoundly love to share with the viewers the basic commonalities that make them so appealing. The methods used in this series are a reflection of my training as a Montessori teacher. I took the Montessori methods of thinking and teaching and applied them to the canvas. My abstract artwork reflects,

both, my view as an educator, as well as a visual artist. I feel that the method serves a dual purpose; the need for freedom of movement in education and for the freedom of brushstrokes and choices in a painting. Many people have described my artwork as “organized chaos”, while others have described it as “happy.” I agree with both descriptions, and refer to my artwork as “organized happy chaos.” My view of the world is complex, insightful, and full of promise, yet I respond with naïveté and choose to dream and persevere.” Kelly Fischer

Artist Statement: “I pursue shapes and colors. My semi-abstract, expressionist portraits tell a story of whimsical spontaneity. Based on an underpainting my art begins to emerge as color and texture are added layer by layer. The landscapes pull the viewer into a world of color, light, and emotion. My body of work has developed and evolved over time, with much of the outcome being driven by creative impulses. About Kelly: Originally from Tennessee, Kelly Fischer has lived in Switzerland for the past thirty years. She maintains strong connections in both countries, spending equal time at her studios in Bern & Memphis. Her paintings have been featured at numerous galleries and exhibitions, including Art Basel Miami, the Austrian Biennale, and the Venice Biennale. Aside from art, Kelly has published eleven children's books and is the former founder and head of the English Montessori School of Bern.
