Her story:

CollazoBio:

lives in Miami, Florida. She was born in Cuba and lived in Spain, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. She participated in solo and group exhibitions in England, France, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.

Her early years were tumultuous and unsettling. At age five communism forever changed her family’s trajectory, by age nine she witnessed the demise of her father’s life work, and the heart attack and nervous breakdown that followed. Shortly after, her home and belongings were confiscated, and the family sought shelter in her grandparents’ Victorian country house; hours away from the place they once called home.

For three years, her parents struggled to get them out of the country, but after many failed tries, she started to believe they may never leave. Then, suddenly, they packed their bags and boarded a plane for Madrid, Spain, where they lived for eleven months. Ileana was fascinated by her ancestral history, the architecture, museums, gardens. She fell in love with the old city and heard her parents' conversations about setting roots there, but, for the third time in her short life, she had to wave good bye to a place she came to love.

Her grandmother’s garden is the most heartfelt keepsake of her early years; that magical place became the catalyst for the art she creates today. The scrapbook of her mind is filled with treasured memories of time spent alone in that sacred space.

Collazo has experienced many impactful moments throughout her life, but the three years spent among her grandmother's flowers, birds, butterflies, and ever changing skies filled her with the wonder that fuels her poetry and art.

Life in the United States was very different. She saw her parents struggle to rebuild what they no longer had enough time to replicate; the life they lost and mourned. But they were persistent and resilient; life went on, and she met her soulmate, and both artists they started the on the creative path that gives profound meaning to their lives.

Ileana paints, takes photographs, and creates digital art, collages, and videos. She feels incredibly fortunate to be a part of an artistic lineage that dates to ancient cave paintings. Art is the language without words that is understood by and unites people regardless of gender, age, or political association.
