CENTRE OF METAL ART ( CoMA ) Typology : Educational / Gallery Site : Georgetown, Penang A design thesis is a design project is taken through a comprehensive design process and understanding from design investigation to design assembly and to be developed within two semesters of study. The project should contain an architectural inquiry or theoretical premise (unifying idea) to serve as a guide during the design process. The theoretical premise or unifying idea is to be presented as a thesis statement that clarifies architectural issues that the project is to address. Hence the final product of the design thesis should demonstrate competency in research, design, and the assembly of architectural elements. The thesis statement is to propose a centre of metal art that promotes understanding in metalsmithing especially towards general public by metal artisan physical platform and programmes through art-based placemaking in Georgetown, Penang.
In the past, the Malays often referred to skilled ironsmiths as pandai besi (literally translated as “one who is well versed in metalwork”). Such ironsmiths have existed since the Malaccan sultanate, forging weapons, farming implements and utensils. The art of silver, brass as well as iron crafts comprise some of the craftsmanship on traditional metal crafts which are still being practiced until the present day in Malaysia. The usage of raw materials, instruments and the multifaceted techniques of production help to stimulate the local artisans in their efforts to produce artistic crafts in various forms and functions. Nowadays, the evolvement of metal work to expression artwork became satisfaction to metal artisan. The hybridization of culture and creativity make steel artisan produce many expressive artwork that been derived by specific subjects.

1. Humans always communicate with nature and surrounding by experiencing using their five basic senses which are sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. 2. Basically, space needs express in physical setting by people linking to the architectural communication and produce the ideas to illustrate the design image.
“People live not by the things that they see or the spaces that they live in, but there is meaning behind it” Abraham George (2005)
Research Element
THEORY 1 : CREATIVE COMMUNITIES ART-BASED PLACEMAKING
THEORY 2 : ARCHITECTURE AND THE SENSES
THEORY 3 : SYMBOLISM AND METAPHOR
“Creative Placemaking,” where artists themselves take the reins, or where the ultimate outcome is a completed work of public art, arts-based Placemaking from our perspective is fundamentally collaborative, engaging the community and stakeholders from the very beginning. The community itself is both the driving force of the project and the key measure of its success.
“When experiencing a work of art, a curious exchange takes place; the work projects its aura, and we project our own emotions and precepts on the work. The melancholy in Michelangelo’s architecture is fundamentally the viewer’s sense of his/her own melancholy enticed by the authority of the work. Enigmatically, we encounter ourselves in the work.”
“Architectural space, as I see it, has to be part of the story it’s trying to communicate. It’s not just a container to be filled; it’s part of the symbolism of the building. And the symbol transports you beyond the material reality and, in architecture, toward that which language itself cannot fully articulate.”

GAMUDA TOWER Typology : Medium Rise Site : Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur Kampung Baru or “Kampong Bharu” is a Malay enclave in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. One of the most valuable tracts of land in the capital, it has been estimated to be worth up to US$1.4 billion. Kampung Baru’s elders have turned developers away, saying they want to preserve their ethnic Malay lifestyle. Kampung Baru, or “new village,” has been populated since the 1880s and today has become an amalgamation of seven villages over a 100-hectare area downtown. Officially listed as a Malay Agricultural Settlement by the British in 1900, Kampung Baru was first established as a pastoral community to attract rural Malays into Kuala Lumpur. This project is focused to designing medium rise building of significant complexity for a corporate entity on a chosen site which Gamuda Berhad. The brief from this client will guide the design properly.
The design problems and issues are fairly complex building projects which will require completely integrated solutions in design and technical aspects. This is critically assess the architectural relevance and values of a project proposal within an urban setting. The design integrates various aspects of architectural concerns including client’s brief, contextual issues, structural rationality, services requirements, selection and applications. The proposals producing a scheme that resolves site layout, efficient and flexible planning of interior space, basement parking layout, interior spaces which are responsive to human needs and comfort, materiality, façade design, as well as the project contribution to the urban environment. Knowledge of prevailing planning and building by-laws is also important.

LEVITATE HEXAPATH Typology : Canopy Walk Site : Taman Negara, Pahang Levitate Hexapath is a modernized canopy walkway parametric style made to appreciate the nature and compliments it on the site. It is a platform for view nature inside nature. The site proposed is at Taman Negara Pahang. It is a good place for nature. It is where the idea of the canopy walkway derived from. Canopy is the term for the layers in forest hierarchy levels. The first is the ground, then the middle layer, then canopy layer, then emergence layer. Meaning that canopy is the layer just below the top of the trees. The form is derived from the sprouting of bamboo shoots.
Bamboo is a tropical plant that is flexible, strong, versatile, and durable. Mimicking the shoots that protrudes and grows from the ground up. The core and strength of the bamboo is shows significant baldness of the design and form. The form of the horizontal members; the walkaway is inspired by the form of bamboo, round, but have altered into honeycomb for more dynamic. The interior of the design shows permeability of visibility but still remains inclusiveness. A combination of in and out that respects both realm.

EDU-LABYRINTH Typology : Master Planning Site : Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur In respect of the treasures of UM, the pristine forestry and the sentimental value that has become the pride Universiti Malaya, the overall master planning approach is to embrace the nature and the same time proposing new development that minimize carbon footprint and promotes green culture which is targeted to primary user of Universiti Malaya. The idea of conserving existing RIMBA ILMU forest came from fact that Universiti Malaya forest is the only surviving primeval forest in Petaling Jaya, and became host to 8 endangered species of trees available in RIMBA ILMU. With that being said, the focus point 2: UM as an eco-campus is being integrated in each of the focus point strategy and become the holistic element that shape the vision of the masterplan.
Central campus district (CCD) is the heart of Universiti Malaya and core zone that unites the community from different faculties. Thus, the approach of the master planning is focused on enhancing the sense togetherness among the users which centres around Lake Varsity and Perdana Siswa. Establishment of new cultural centre is an addition to existing CCD components which will create new landmark that helps to enhance the image and identity of Universiti Malaya. Water element in CCD area is integrated with cultural trail to increase public appreciation towards Tasik Varsiti with injection of hypothetical programmes and activities.

JEJAK SYMPHONY Typology : Urban Planning Site : Bandung, Indonesia Bandung is the capital of west java province in Indonesia, located approximately 140 km south-east of Jakarta. The earliest reference to the city dates back to 1488. The city grew during 17th and 18th century, during the Dutch colonial era. Situated in a valley, in a cool elevated landscape, surrounded by major plantations, Bandung became an exclusive European resort town. The reminiscence of Dutch urban planning and architecture is still very much present in various parts of the city. It is the third largest city and second largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. The site strategically located at RW. 005 and RW. 002 area, which is near to kereta api Bandung and hardware commercial area. It comprise with two main zones which are the industrial hardware area and cultural Braga area. The zones are segregated by the river at Jalan Suniaraja.
There are several issues that detected on the site. Generally, the biggest issue is the obvious or poor linkages and permeability. There is no proper pedestrian walkway to public and the width for sidewalk is too small. Besides, the poor public transport system also contributes to traffic congestion in this area. The increasing of population make people surrounding needs good public transport. There is no proper place to get the beca and angkot. Furthermore, the production of industrial waste from hardware and workshop give the bad image for the building surrounding. Since the industrial waste not proper manage, the placing of the hardware waste is along building streets.

SEHIJAU RESIDENCES Typology : Vertical Housing Site : Ipoh, Perak
Sehijau Residences, one of the highlighted aspects is the interaction of the communnity. This housing provides the standard facilities such as multipurpose hall, musalla and cafe. Other than that, is a sky garden at 7th floor which is people not need to have interactions on ground only. The hall is design to accomodate events such as feast or weddings that celebrate by community in this residence.
The usage of natural lighting and natural ventilation for most of the space in the building includes both facilities and units. For the unit, the same method is applied. Plenty of openings for natural lighting and ventilation. Installation of clerestory window and light shelf enables sunlight to penetrate deeper into the space without a direct shine that causes glares and heating up the space.
This project emphasize on low energy concept. Thus passive design is extensively implemented on most part of design. For example, the building orientation respects the direction of qiblat. The beauty of this is that minimizes the amount of direct sunlight shine to the wall of this building.
By using passive design, low energy building is achieved, coincide with green building approach that promotes save energy.
