Brown is certainly a colour that communicates coffee. So, when you order a cup of the new Pike Place coffee at Starbucks this week, it doesn’t seem out of place to see a special brown logo on the cup and paper sleeve. Except that, as everyone knows, Starbucks’ iconic logo is green. We want to try and regain some of the goodwill and warm feelings for the brand. The brown logo relates back to the beginning of the chain in 1971, bringing with it a feeling of nostalgia. The logo will be used for 8 weeks on all its cups, but will remain in ads and for the logos for Pike Place bags of coffee.

STARBUCKS APP
I recently got an iPhone and have made all my friends realise just how much I love Starbucks by loading the Starbucks application on it! It’s great! I can find any Starbucks wherever I may be. The other day when me and a friend were in an area of London we didn’t know and it began to rain, we quickly logged on and found a coffee house five minutes away! As I said to my friend, “Aren’t you pleased I had this now?!” And she was! Alice Haines, Essex

I was in my local store the other week and as I was waiting at the till I began to look at the different signs, which you have on the walls, which explain about the way in which you try and help the farmers who grow the coffee. The Starbucks (RED) program really interested me, so much so I decided to come online and start to read about the relationships, which you have with the small coffee bean growing communities in Africa. I find it really interesting in the way in which you help the communities and it shows that you are not just a huge money making corporation. It shows you have heart. And it makes me feel better about the coffee which I am drinking! Kevin O’Donnell, Dublin

TRANQUILITY
Being a mum of three, Starbucks is rarely a place I attempt to go with my children, it’s more for when I meet up with other mums whilst the kids are at nursery. But one afternoon I arranged to meet a mum and her children in our local Starbucks. I must confess I was slightly dubious about keeping five little children occupied whilst the mums had a casual chat. But there was nothing to worry about! We sat the kids down with mugs of Caramel Apple Spice to keep them busy for ten minutes. They loved them! I think the cosy drink made them sleepy as they proceeded to sleep for the rest of our visit! Gill Forsey, Surrey
HONESTY
I was trekking in North Thailand a few weeks ago and as I kept waking up on the wet mornings to the smell of rice and extremely bad coffee, I found myself longing for a steaming mug of Starbucks home brew. As I came to the end of my trip, in Chang Mai, my prayers were answered. As I walked across a crazy market place, the familiar green and brown sign caught my eye. Starbucks! I had one of the best flat white coffee’s of my life. Thank you Starbucks! Jack Whitestone, Hampshire
Glad we could be of service Jack! To welcome you back from your travels we are giving you a hamper of Starbucks goodies which will keep your cravings satisfied!

Southampton This busy city is full of culture and entertainment. Having two central Starbucks branches, you are never too far from your favourite coffee pit-stop.

We took a look around Starbucks, which is located right outside West Quay, the large shopping centre in the heart of Southampton and discovered it was a busy branch. With a constant flow of shoppers, businessmen and mums, the staff work hard to keep up with the bulk of orders. With two floors of seating area, fitted with a range of comfy sofa seats and tables and chairs, it seems the perfect location to catch up with friends or just relax in a good book. The Southampton Starbucks has a good balance between the hustle and bustle of the city and the calm peace that workers often seek in their lunch break.
The store is colourful and inviting with very friendly staff.
The staff are friendly and make sure you get the most from your visit, offering a range of options at the counter. With the cakes and pastries displayed deliciously, it is hard to resist a cheeky treat. It is the perfect location for its loyal customers, easy for a quick visit, and right in the city centre for a hideaway in the middle of a busy day.
We spoke to mum of three Catherine, who was a regular visitor, “It’s a great store. The staff are so helpful, and it is very child-friendly. I just wish I could come here alone sometimes and relax!” Overall this Starbucks branch does the company proud, and is a great ambassador for everything we want to promote, a friendly, relaxing environment, perfect for any time of the day which a beverage to suit every mood.
We gave the Southampton branch a very commendable 4 stars out of 5. A great central spot, with friendly staff and a well presented store. Next month, we go by the seaside and check out the delights of Blackpool!

Once upon a time... The story of the humble coffee bean
You go into Starbucks and automatically ask for your usual Cappuccino to go and rush straight to work. Yet have you ever stopped to think, where does this coffee come from?
Feature Starbucks has a great selection of coffees from regions around the world, maintaining a good relationship with Fairtrade, with all of our coffees now being Fairtrade certified. We at Starbucks want to provide you with the history behind our coffee, there is more to a Macchiato than meets the eye, and hopefully this will give you an insight….

The great desire for coffee did not come about until the 15th century though, with Yemen in Arabia being the only source in the world for the much sought after product. The beans had to be highly guarded, with no fertile plants being allowed to leave the country. Muslims eventually took a risk and smuggled coffee plants back to their homeland of India, with the crops being buried and grown straight away.
1. The coffee bean starts off inside the bright red coffee cherry.
It is a little bizarre to think that it first started out being sold on the streets, as opposed to now where there are over 15,000 Starbucks stores around the world. The region where the coffee is grown plays a big part in its taste. The native soil, climate, elevation and processing methods used in the cultivation of the coffee provide the beans with a distinctive and most importantly exquisite taste for its customers. There are three main global regions used for the growth of coffee, those being: East

Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia. The soil, climate, altitude and even the surrounding plants all contribute to the flavour of the cherries on the coffee trees. These trees have the potential to grow 30 – 40 feet. Although despite the vast amount of trees grown, it takes over a year for the tree to produce only a week worth of coffee! Starbucks only buys Arabica coffees. Arabica is a coffee species that grows best at a high altitude and has an extremely refined flavour in comparison to other option – coffee Canephora. This produces harsh flavour characteristics and is not suited to our brand. Starbucks want to
4. They are washed and are then ready to be roasted, firstly being separated from the cherries, submerged in a vat of water and then dried with high-tech equipment. 5. They are intensely heated in a large rotating drum for 5 – 7 minutes, with the majority of their moisture evaporating. After about the 8th minute the first ‘pop’ happens, with the beans doubling in size, turning light brown. 6. After about 10-11 minutes in the roaster, the beans become browner with the full flavour developing, then the second pop signalling that it is almost ready. 7. Put onto a tray to cool, it is ready to be sent off! 8. Starbucks place their order and the coffee gets shipped off to stores, ready to be made into a beverage for you.p

Fairtrade
Our Green Beans The Importance of Fairtrade T
hese days technology is rising quickly, because it makes people’s life easier. Nowadays the web is used to do pretty much anything, from finding basic to complex information, meeting new people and even buying and selling products. Not like the old days when people needed to buy something they always go to the market. Today we can stay at home, open our web browsers and with a few clicks we can get what we are looking for by having it conveniently shipped to our homes. When it comes to technology it all sounds beautiful and simple but there is most definitively a downside. The cost of technology, in many cases, affects the well being of mother nature and by consequence ourselves, thus, not being completely ethical. Many technologies that companies develop and produce are not safe to our planet and as a result these unsafe products can damage the earth. It is true that

human kind cannot get anything without first giving something in return but in the process we forget just how valuable the things we sacrifice really are. For example, a farmer who plant coffee or rice will always want to get the best price for his work. He is part of the supply part of the market but in many cases people’s demand is too high which makes producers work even harder and putting more strain on the earth used to cultivate the good. If this process continues we will soon regret being part of this demand/supply chain because the one suffering and taking a big hit in the long run is our planet. Striking a balance between fair pricing and lowering the impact the earth takes because of our demand is why Fairtrade is important. All the world’s a marketplace, and all of us use it, whether as producers or consumers. In the globalised world of the 21st century, trade is one of the strongest ties that binds us. But for millions of people trade isn’t just an
abstract notion. The terms on which they participate in world markets can determine whether or not their families have enough to eat, whether they can afford to send their children to school, and whether their basic employment rights are respected.
We’re proud that all of our Starbucks Expresso is 100% certified in the UK and Ireland. This means that all of the coffee in your cappuccinos and lattes is 100% Fairtrade. Buying Fairtrade means that you make selection to the products you want to buy. You only buy products that are not exploitating the earth (it is friendly product) and the products that already have a fair price. It’s not just about feeling

tarbucks has brought out our first ever range of instant coffee, called Starbucks Via. It is a quick and easy way to enjoy your favourite blend of coffee at your own convenience. What’s even better is that there is no need to wait for it to brew, you simply pour in boiling water and then stir once,it’s simple! So if you’re running late for your morning train and fancy a pick me up, you can quickly make a thermos and run! With almost 31 billion cups of coffee being consumed each year in the UK, with 75% brewed at home and the remainder consumed on the go or away from home. This was the main reason as to why Starbucks decided that we should bring out our coffee into a handy instant range – why spend time at home wishing it was the good coffee you can get every day?

Columbian Medium Roast
Decaf Italian Roast Extra Bold
The three blends, Colombia, Italian Roast and Decaffeinated Italian Roast, have all been specially blended and ground from 100% Arabica beans. We have spent ten long years perfecting this range of instant coffee and have managed to keep the freshness, taste and quality of the coffee.
All the coffee used here at Starbucks is ethnically sourced. There is no change in the way in which we make our instant coffee either as we are still using coffee beans which are in the top 3% of the worlds crop. We certainly do not scrimp on the quality.
It is something which we are very proud of. If our word isn’t enough, the why not listen to Whittard of London’s coffee expert, Giles Hilton; “Both flavours were better than the average cup of instant as they avoid that earthy, dull flavour which is so often found in instant coffee. The handy packaging means that it can keep the coffee fresher and you can even taste it.” STARBUCKS Via is now available across 700 British stores. It is sold in packs of twelve for £4.45. This allows the customer twelve cups of their favourite brew at less than £1 a cup.

Safaris are an ideal family day out, with the sights appealing to all ages. You can take a safari minibus or jeep and be driven around the open plains of Masai Mara, getting up close and personal with the extraordinary animals.

These safari’s have become one of the most iconic associations with Africa, yet it’s tourism is struggling as of late, with many animals being poached due to this. The Born Free organisation (most known for its connection with the epic film Born Free from the sixties) is campaigning to get people attracted to the wildlife service in Kenya once again. What better reason to visit Kenya then to save the animals. The Ruins of Gedi This is a wonderful lost city lying in the depths of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Coffee Tours
The Nichols family recently went on holiday to Kenya and Sue kindly gave Starbucks an insight to their fun filled trip: “This is possibly the best trip we have ever been on; I would recommend it to anyone. The highlight had to be the safari through Masai Mara, I have never seen anything like it, I was in absolute amazement of the areas beauty and the animals are just incredible to see up-close. We also went on a coffee tour, which was a real insight as I am a big coffee drinker and didn’t have a clue how it all works! Buying a coffee in Starbucks next time will definitely make me reminisce about this holiday.”

Europe's hidden gem...
The train line
Interailing is fast becoming the best way to discover Europe. By travelling the thousands of train lines, tourists are now able to discover areas which are normally off the beaten track.
I
n the summer of 2008, university student Kayleigh Moore went on what proved to be a life changing and enhancing journey through Europe. Starbucks Magazine sploke to her about her experiences. Both safe and quick, Interialing is a fantastic way in which to see some of the best sights within Europe. Kayleigh says, “Interailing couldn’t be any simpler; you purchase a ticket through either a travel agency or online with the Interail company. Europe is divided into different zones, depending on how far you want to travel. We only travelled in a small zone which wasn’t completely off the beaten track. Once you’re in the country, there can sometimes be some added extras which you won’t realise until you literally have to get on the train. Apart from that one downfall, it is a great trip and one of the best ways to see Europe.” It has

become a new and exciting way to see Europe. You can pack up your bag and make your move as and when you want to. Hostels are the best places to stay, with Kayleigh saying, “They were surprisingly clean and tidy. We always went for dormitories just because they were
cheaper than any other room. They were good, apart from the fact that you just need to keep an eye on your belongings and learn to deal with the fact that people will come in in the middle of the night, having been out to a pub and decide to turn on a light or begin to be loud. You just have to learn the hostel etiquette. Once you have that, you can sleep soundly through the night!” Hostels were not the only place that Kayleigh stayed in though. When she travelled into Croatia, she was lucky enough to stay in a local woman’s house, on the island Split. “We stayed in a house which had three or four different apartments. We had a room, a little kitchen, balcony and ensuit. We even got clean towels every day!” If your not inclined for the hostel lifestyle, there are of course alternatives, such as apartments and smaller, smarter B&B’s.
were all in Hungarian and the only people around spoke no English. We had a Hungarian guide book which had a few phrases in it but they were far to complicated for us to speak. The language is much more Japanese sounding than it is European. We finally managed to get through to someone what we needed and they helped us greatly. We never Split, just encountered a local person off mainland who was unwilling to help us.” Croatia Language should not be an obstacle when you are trying to Europe is a diverse continent, with many see these amazing countries. languages being spoken across the vast changing countries. This should not be something which affects you whilst travelling , as you can get by with just a simple phrase book and lets face it, many already know the local lingo in countries such as France and Italy. These phrase booklets come in very handy when you’re in countries like Hungary, just as Kayleigh told me. “Because all the countries were very touristy, sometimes there was no need to even use the phrase books because the people in the different countries wanted to use their English as well. We managed to get by with just one phrase book! The biggest problem was when we were in Hungary. We got off a train and we were rather lost in a To some of you out there, Interailing remote part of the country. The signs could seem like a trip where you spend most of your time on a train. The night trains may not appeal to everyone but as Kayleigh says, they are much more practical. “Travelling through the night does have its good points. You don’t have to find a hostel for the night or worry about where you’re going to get your dinner as you can get it on the train. As well as this, you do not waste days sitting on the train. The fact that The Colosseum, you can go to bed in one city and Rome
wake up in another is pretty cool. You wake up and you’re ready to go. It seems like it is so quick because when you wake up your pretty much an hour away from your destination. You can hop off, find some breakfast and a hostel in which to put your bags and there you are, ready for the day!” As my conversation with Kayleigh wound up, I asked her the all important questions: Would you do it again? “Without a doubt. There is no question. It is such a fantastic way in which to see Europe. You see areas of the country and cities which you would never see if you were travelling in a car. I’m talking about the slums which The Vatican, we sometimes in Rome saw outside large cities which we were travelling through. In Hungary, we saw just how much communist influence is still in the country. If I do it again, I think I would want to do it either by myself or with a boyfriend. If I was to do it by myself I would be able to meet more people and to be able to get a better experience. I had never been backpacking before and I found this such a exciting experience. I loved the feeling of being free and being able to pack up and down as I wanted to. I had no idea whatsoever as to how to pack and I ended up bringing way to much stuff! But doesn’t everyone?”

Spread the leeks over the circles leaving a slight border around the edge. Put a slice of goat’s cheese in the middle of each tart and top with a thyme sprig. Pinch the pastry edge together to slightly encase the leeks, then bake the tarts for 25 minutes until puffed up and golden. Serve hot and drizzle with flavoured oil if you have it.

Unlucky in love Karen Bailey, had given up searching for a man, but after a chance meeting at her favourite coffee house, she found her perfect match in the place she least expected it.
A
fter a few past relationships that ended badly, she thought her chances of finding her soul mate were wearing thin. At 44 years old, she had a simple life, a good job, great family and friends around her, but nothing could distract her from the fact that she was coming home every night to an empty house. She dreamt of meeting her prince charming and completing her fairytale, but never seemed to have any luck. Always a Starbucks fan, she visited religiously every morning ordering her tall Caramel Macchiato before heading off to the office. When lunchtime came around, she would usually grab a quick coffee pick-me-up from the machine in her building, but it just so happened that on the day the machine was broken, she needed this coffee more than ever. She nipped off to Starbucks once again, and little did she know the encounter that she
38 STARBUCKS MAY 2010
was about to experience. After ordering her beverage, the place was getting busier and Karen was becoming agitated at the hustle and bustle of elbows bumping into her. All she wanted was to grab her drink and go. Waiting patiently she felt the stare of a pair of eyes on the back of her head, and turned around only to greet the gaze of a tall handsome stranger. Thinking nothing more about it, she grabbed her hot cuppa and left in a hurry. On the way back to the office, she heard shouting and the sound of someone running towards her. She turned and spotted this man once again waving his arms vigorously at her. He was shouting at her and came running to meet her, she didn’t understand. Once he caught up with her, he was panting and his words were broken with him trying to catch his breath. By this time she was really beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about, she thought she had left something in Starbucks. He muttered
something about Karen having taken the wrong coffee, and with that he swapped drinks with her and ran off again. To Karen’s dismay, it wasn’t the chance meeting she’d hoped for. Then as she went to sip her sizzling hot cup of coffee, she noticed a telephone number on the side of the cup, followed by the name Andrew.
“
It wasn’t the chance meeting she’d hoped for.
”
Her heart was beating, and she decided to call the number at the end of the day. The next day the coffee was long gone, and the cup still stood empty, with the number on the side unanswered. The day went on as usual and Karen ventured into Starbucks to begin her daily coffee routine. She was early to work and so
decided to take a seat in one of the comfy chairs. Across from her a couple cosied up to each other, laughing and giggling, making Karen smile. Then the penny dropped, she thought nothing more about it. She rummaged for the coffee cup stuffed in her bag, picked up her phone and began to dial.
The penny dropped... she picked up her phone
”
‘Hello’ Karen froze, and her mind started to panic. She stuttered something about Starbucks and a coffee, and then felt a tap on her shoulder. She slowly turned round and there he was, the tall dark handsome stranger, with his phone pined to his ear. It turned out he had been grabbing his daily coffee just at the same time. For the next 3 hours they sat and chatted, ordered cappuccino after cappuccino, and even indulged in a few tasty sweet treats, a rocky road here, a chocolate cookie there. They made their excuses to work and spent the whole day getting to know each other. Since then, they have never looked back. This year they will have been married for 5 years. Karen no longer comes home to an empty house. Instead she spends her evenings cuddled up with her hubby and her favourite frappuccino. Perfect blended bliss. So it just goes to show that you never know who you might meet in Starbucks, and what might happen from a chance meeting on a typical rainy day. So while you’re sipping your coffee, kicking back and relaxing, have a look around and see if there is anybody that’s hoping to catch your eye, and buy you your next cuppa. p
Top: On holiday in Italy last year. Bottom right: the Starbucks where they met.

Andrew said: I was so lucky to meet Karen in my local Starbucks. When I first saw her, I just had to make sure she noticed me! Giving her my number that day, was the best thing I’ve ever done and I’ve been happily married since. Thanks Starbucks!

A bickering New York couple are planning on divorcing until they are witnesses to a violent murder. They attempt to salvage their marriage after they are both placed in witness protection. There is a typical mix of jokes and laughs with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as they attempt to try and put their marriage back on track. Could life in the Rockies be just what they need? Or will the silence and nature amplify the couples arguments and lead them straight into the divorce lawyer’s office?
Colin Firth stars as George Falconer, a gay British university professor living in Southern California, set in 1962. Eight months after the death of George’s partner, Jim, played by Matthew Goode, the story tells of how George struggles to find meaning in his life after being refused to go to his partners funeral by Jim’s family. The film based on one whole day, with George planning to do something devastating at the end of it. This is the directional debut by fashion designer Tom Ford and is unmissable.
Heart of the Matter is a story of two very different women. One, a wealthy wife of a doctor who recently gave up her career path to stay at home and become a house wife. The other, a mother who has given up on any other relationship than the one with her child. A tragic accident brings their two lives crashing together and as they both ask themselves who they really are, is there something holding them together?

She fought hard for the rights and success of her family. The courageous choices which she made helped to protect those she loved. The book has been researched and is mixed with Gregory’s amazing story telling skills. He gives an unforgettable voice to an extraordinary woman at the heart of a devastating conflict.

What is your role within Starbucks? I work behind the counter in my local branch, serving customers and meeting their every need!
What’s your favourite Starbucks beverage? I go through phases with my favourites, but at the moment I would have to say a flat white. It might be a bit of a boring choice but it always wakes me up in the morning and has the same great taste, especially if I make it myself!
What is your favourite part of your job?
love to be a manager “ I’dof Starbucks one day! ”
I really enjoy working with the staff and meeting new people. We have a lot of banter at our branch, which the regular customers enjoy too. Everyday someone new and different comes through the door. I also love the smell of the fresh coffee; it makes me hungry even at the start of the day, just after breakfast!
What is your least favourite part of your job? Washing up! But then again who does like doing that!
Ever had an embarrassing work moment? I’ve slipped over a few times on spilt coffee, but so far its only been me that fell and not a huge tray of cups, so fingers crossed it stays like that!
Have you had any other jobs before this one?
Have you ever had any funny quirky customer incidents? A couple of times people have fallen asleep on the sofas or comfy chairs. They literally can be there up until closing, before they wake up and panic about where they are! If we notice them we usually wake them up, but I know I would love to sleep in a Starbucks all day!
46 STARBUCKS MAY 2010
Ever served any celebrities? I have served a few local celebrities like Alan Carr and his dad, but recently I nearly died when I served Frank Lampard. He came to the counter with his sunglasses on, and it wasn’t until he took them off that I realised who he was. I am such a huge fan, I swear I was shaking as I handed him his cappuccino! He was a nice bloke though.
Future plans? I love working in Starbucks, so I would love to work here for a while and see what comes out of that, but I could definitely see myself being a Starbucks manager one day.

Well I’m only 20 so I’ve only had a couple of other jobs before this one. I worked as a temp at WHSmith for a couple months, which was boring, and I wasn’t interested in selling stationary. Least here I get to sample the food sometimes! Then I moved on to work in an office, doing general administration. Sitting at a desk all day definitely wasn’t for me, and so I applied for Starbucks.
