Transport:

What is sustainable design?

Sheffield must develop a "transport strategy that enables the realisation of national, regional and local objectives" (Development Services, 2006). The idea behind this is Sheffield are offering substitutes to the preferred method of travel that is the car. This is important in order for sustainability to develop, as we want the air pollution to be limited as well as the congestion across the city. To improve this Sheffield City council has introduced more 'A' roads that "provide good quality, direct routes into the city centre and to the regional and national road network" (Development Services, 2006) collaborated. Options like the supertram and popular bus routes that have quality bus corridors have been introduced, helping them avoid the congestion. Utilising parks and woodland areas has been developed to create a more appealing system for pedestrians to move across the city. Rail networks can be safe guarded and we will improve connections across the city and the region (Development Services, 2006). This is helping regenerate Sheffield's Transport by increasing accessibility across the city and improving road safety, this is a secured example of sustainable development.

Sustainability links very close to ‘green architecture’ or design, in the sense that it minimizes harmful effects on human health and the environment within a building. The "green" architect or designer attempts to shield the environment by choosing environmentally friendly building materials and manufacture practices ("Sustainable Design", 2018). An excellent designer will always consider the direction of the sun on the environment and the nature and wildlife around it before starting a design proposal. The designer must also consider the financial cost and the needs of the client (e,g, the public) before finalizing there idea, as there are so many options we must take into consideration due to disabilities, weather changes and environment changes etc. Green buildings usually include a variety of innovative technologies, and have to be approved by the EU or UK government policy. We must always consider using alternative energy resources, in order to not only create something sustainable but something energy efficient, through the use of the three factors technology push; policy pull; enlightened self- interest (Edwards, 2014).

DEFINITION - According to the Oxford Dictionary ‘sustainability’ is defined in two ways. The first definition ‘is to be able to be maintained at a certain rate or level’. The second definition is “Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance”.

“The concept of sustainability embraces the notion of the environment as a holistic cross-disciplinary in practice” (Edwards, 2014).

Sheffield Railway Station Sheaf Street Sheffield S1 2BP United Kingdom

Sheffield Midland Train Station, formerly named Pond Street Station, is a combined railway station and tram stop in Sheffield, England. The station is located on Sheaf Street and is the busiest station in South Yorkshire and 35th busiest station in the UK. The station is currently being considered for one of the countries high speed rail projects.

The Peak District National Park is the first of Britain’s 15 national parks as it was founded in 1951.

Visitors: more than 10 million visitors a year (one of the most popular national parks in the UK). It is NOT the second-most visited national park in the world after Mount Fuji – this is an error which has been widely-repeated on the internet, but it is not true.

The station was opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway to the designs of the company architect John Holloway Sanders. It was the fifth a nd last station to be built in Sheffield city centre. The station was built on the ‘New Line’, which ran between Grimesthorpe Junction, on the former Sheffield and Rotherham Railway, and Tapton Junction, just north of Chesterfield. This line replaced the Midland Railway’s previous route, the ‘old road’, to London, which ran from Sheffield Wicker via Rotherham. In 2002, Midland Mainline, as the main TOC of the station, instigated a major regeneration of Sheffield station. Prior to this, a taxi rank was located inside what is now the main concourse and the new entrance hall. The stone façade of the station was sandblasted and its archways filled with unobstructed windows to improve views both from inside and out. Other changes included the improvement of platform surfaces and the addition of a pedestrian bridge connecting the station concourse with the Sheffield Supertram stop at the far side of the station. In 2008, East Midlands Trains revealed its intention to restrict access to parts of the station by installing ticket barriers to try to prevent passengers from travelling without a ticket. This proposal met with widespread opposition from residents and Council members because the footbridge would be closed off to non-ticket holders, severing a popular thoroughfare from the Norfolk Park residential area and the Supertram stop on one side, to the station travel centre, the bus station interchange, the city centre and the city centre campus of Sheffield Hallam University on the other. On 6 May 2009, East Midlands Trains implemented its proposal, using temporary barriers and ticket inspectors to bar access to the footbridge to non-ticket holders, and local residents and Supertram passengers were forced to use longer routes around the station.

The Peak District National Park, United Kingdom

Peak District National Park is in central England. Steep limestone valleys like Dovedale, with its famed stepping stones, and Lathkill Dale characterise the park’s southern area, which is known as White Peak. North, the Dark Peak area has dramatic gritstone ridges and stark moorland plateaus like Kinder Scout, the park’s highest point. The nearby village of Edale marks one end of the iconic Pennine Way footpath.

Area: 555 sq miles (1,438 sq km) in the centre of England. Resident population: 38,000.

It reaches into five counties: Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester. It is the most accessible national park – close to Manchester, Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham.

An estimated 20 million people live within one hour’s journey of the Peak District. More than 50 million people live within four hours’ journey.

It has 1,600 miles of public rights of way (footpaths, bridleways and tracks) including 64 miles accessible to disabled people. It has 65 miles of offroad dedicated cycling and walking trails and we own 34 miles of disused railways: High Peak Trail, Tissington Trail and Monsal Trail, with cycle-hire centres at Ashbourne, Parsley Hay, Derwent Valley and Middleton Top.

The main station entrance, facing Sheaf Square, is the location of the main concourse and most of the station’s facilities. The ticket office, ticket machines, information desk and a number of retail units are located there, and public toilets and facilities such as cash machines and a left luggage facility. There are further shops and facilities on the island platforms and in the Supertram entrance hall at the far side of the station. There are waiting rooms on the island platforms and the East Midlands Trains first class lounge is within the station buildings, by platform 5.

OUT-OF-DOORS will be aimed at residents of Sheffield who regularly or are interested in going to the peak district to get outdoors, climb or walk. With my site being located right next to Sheffield Train Station, this makes it one of the easier, most visatile and most sustainble methods of transport for commuters to the Peak District Nation Park. With the back right-hand door to OUT-OF-DOORS having a door leading right onto Sheffield Stations Platform 1B (a regular hotspot for trains heading to the peaks), this leaves Sheffield residents and tourists no excuse but to venture through my hybride space. With Sheffield’s new business district and Fargate just around the corner this gives a diverse opportunity for anyone to hope on a train to the peaks, whilst glancing on their way at what OUT-OF-DOORS has to offer them. I hope that with the ideality of the location, this will allow beginner and advanced ramblers, walkers and hikers to give the Peaks a fair shot. The diagram on the right is map of the peak ditrict, and the different shades of green lines running through it represent the train lines, bus routes and the main hiking routes which users take when travelling to and from the peak district. I did this diagram for my mapping because i wanted to see how people would commute to and from the peak district and to investigate which was the easiest and most sustainable form of travel there. I believe that the train is the easiest access and most sustainble form of transport for users of OUT-OF-DOORS because by using public transport their carbon footprint is being limited, and with my site leading straight onto the platform it really couldn’t be made easier for the public of Sheffield to use.

There is a 678-space car park situated next to the main station building (Q Park) and there is a reserved parking area for blue badge holders in the main station building. There is also a taxi rank outside the station building, next to the disabled car park. Bicycle storage is provided on platforms 1a and 3a. The whole station, including platforms, concourse and Supertram stop, is accessible to disabled passengers. I chose Sheffield Train Station as my site because it is a key spot for commuters to the peak district, as the train is the easiest and most sustainable form of transport to its users. Therefore making it an idea pitstop for most hikers and ramblers.

What is a HYBRID SPACE?

Flexible Space:

Networked Space: Media networks (Internet, telephone, television etc.) are influencing and interacting with “real” places. The emerging space of digital information/ communication flows is modifying not only our physical environment but also the social, economic and cultural organization of our societies in general.

SAVE THE NETHER EDGE TREES

The group was formed in late September 2015, in response to residents’ alarm at the proposed fellings across the city, and concerns at what “Streets Ahead” had in store for leafy Nether Edge.

1. “Space which comprises both physical and virtual space; for example, an online virtual classroom as experienced by each learner who is also situated in a physical space that influences the online environment.”

ADVANTAGES

Using good design elements, both in the individual furnishings and in a wellplanned layout, the hybrid space offers flexibility. Whether one is working on a solo project or with a team, this flexibility means employees don’t fritter away energy that could otherwise be put towards productivity.

Sheffield Railway Station Sheaf Street Sheffield S1 2BP United Kingdom

Who are we? The Save Nether Edge Trees campaign group works to protect street trees in Nether Edge and surrounding areas, as well as supporting other street tree groups across the city.

HYBRID SPACE

2. “A constructed space that attempts to preserve more than one property of the original space. For example, preserving distances between objects and the class structure of the original space.” (IGI GLOBAL, 2018)

The term “Hybrid Space” stands for the combinations and fusions of media and physical space. Hybrid spaces are the products of the alliances of physical objects and information/communication networks, of architectural and media space. Examples of such hybrid spaces are to be found everywhere in our daily lives, such as in the private (communication) spaces of mobile telephony creating islands of private space within public urban space or in the monitored environments where cameras keep watch over open urban space.

In my design I intend to show users that the trees have not gone to waste, by using the reusing the wood from the Nethere Edge trees and incoperating them into my design.

Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process.

In December 2012, Amey revealed that they intended to fell half the street trees in Sheffield.

Who are Streets Ahead and Amey? Streets Ahead is the name for the partnership between Sheffield City Council and Amey, responsible for the ‘upgrading’ and maintenance of Sheffield’s streets, including street trees.

Environmental Sustainability: Plastics have a very good environmental profile. Only 4% of the world’s oil production is used for plastics and much less energy is used to produce it compared to other materials.

Sheffield Railway Station Sheaf Street Sheffield S1 2BP United Kingdom

SAVE OUR OCEANS

Right now an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic – everything from plastic bottles and bags to microbeads – en d up in our oceans each year. That’s a truck load of rubbish a minute. World wide we are trying to save out oceans by banning use of straws in bars and restaurants.

Plastics are durable yet lightweight and thus save weight in cars, aircraft, packaging and pipework. The goal is to make more environmentally friendly plastics. Conventional plastics often wreak havoc on the environment. They fill up landfills, end up as litter on land or in water, are toxic to many animals and often aren’t easily biodegradable. They can survive as litter for thousands of years.

To show users plastic can be used sustainably I incoperating recycled plastic in my design as shelves. This way I am preventing it from being dumped in landfill or our oceans.

Why recycling is sustainable? Recycling, as shown from these examples, saves landfill space, energy, water, and the environment. To live a sustainable life and uphold the values of sustainability, recycling must be a step performed in daily life. Recycling is more important to the survivability of humanity that is often accredited to the action.

FINISH JOURNEY 1 - Sheffield Train Station to Sheffield Fargate (by foot). This journey was the most sustainble of them all because it uses the form of transport that not only is the least harmless to the environment but also to the human body as it is a form of exercise. JOURNEY 2 - Sheffield Train Station to Romiley Train Station (by train).

JOURNEY 3 - Sheffield Train Station to Edale (by bike).

This journey was the least sustainable as it causes the most harm to the environment of the three. This is because of the toxic fumes from the petrol used to power the train. However trains are still a sustainable form of transport because they are used by the public and encourage them to not use their cars. I took this journey because I wanted to show how a within being on a train for a few minutes and coming out of Sheffield, you can begin to see the country side.

This journey was the second most sustainble of the three journeys. This is because using a bike doesnt produce any harmful fumes into the atmosphere. However it takes materials and energy to produce a bicycle. Therefore it isnt the most sustainable form of transport. I chose this as my third and final journey because I wanted to show how easy is is to get from Sheffield City Centre to the Peak District.

Upcycled WoodI chose to use upcycled wood or reclaimed wood as it’s also called because I wanted to show Sheffield residents that the Nether Edge Trees hadn’t gone tow waste. By making the changing rooms, desk and floor out of the wood from these trees, basically recycling old wood, i am preventing the need for further trees to be cut down.

GrassI chose to use grass in my design because the whole purpose behind ‘Out-Of-Doors’ is to encourage users to enjoy the outside. Thereby I think by bringing the outside in, this will encourage users to head to the Peak District.

SPACES: - Retail shop - Changing room pods - Infomation Desk - Tills - Lockers - Meet-up point - Seating

Out-Of-Doors is essentially a hybrid-space, therefore it provides two different types of services to the public. One is a retail space that sells hiking clothes, shoes and equipment. The other service is a welcome and meet up place for wramblers heading to the Peak District, this will provide them with the necessary infomation, as well as storage space, changing rooms and tours. To users of Out-Of-Doors I would say this is unique place within in Sheffield as no other hiking/outdoors retail space has a welcome centre and storage within it, nor does it have the ideal location of the Train Station, and leading straight onto the platform to start your journey to get outside.

POLISHED CONCRETE -

Business Logo

I have chosen grey polished concrete for the base of the floor because it is low-maintenance and durable. Another advantage to consider when polishing concrete floors is the durability and ease of maintenance. Polished concrete flooring also typically offers a life cycle cost up to 60% less than other traditional floor coverings.

RECYCLED ACRYLICI chose to use recycled acrylic because Green Cast acrylic is the highest quality acrylic with the lowest planet impact. Every product is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable and has the same extraordinary look and performance as Madreperla’s virgin acrylics.

GlassI chose glass because it is a sustainble material due to its durability and lightless. Having a glass wall in my design allows for more light to be reflected in the site, meaning there is less need for artificial light..

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE / URBAN RURAL PROJECT by ERAY CARBAJO Sustainable Development via Architectural Innovation ‘Eray Carbajo announces Urban Rural, a new dwelling typology for a sustainable transformation strategy that will become exemplar for Istanbul’s future redevelopment, with construction completion in 2019. Urban Rural proposes a hybrid unit of habitation where one can be close to the city center and simultaneously enjoy the lifestyle of rural living, while having strong interaction with the community and neighborhood. The design challenges the status quo of typical residential typology. Urban Rural seeks sustainable development through architectural innovation. The unique form of the residential modules utilizes an efficient hexagonal grid that covers the maximum building volume with minimum number of building elements. One hexagon unit consists a polygonal area to inhabit and a triangular cavity to be used as an irrigable garden. When all modules combined, these triangle cavities act as a truss structure transferring the building’s loads to lower members. As a whole, Urban Rural creates interdependencies between building systems, structure, landscape and architecture. Integration of such complex systems are achieved through modular design that persevere flexibility.

The Symbiotic Green Wall is an urban ecosystem designed to help buffer, protect and revitalize construction areas. The wall collects rainwater and wastewater from the construction site, filters and stores it, and then distributes it around the site. The external wall, which the public sees, has plant pods, sitting areas, shade, bird nests and lighting to provide a pleasant public outdoor place to enjoy. The wall itself acts as a water storage tank and planter, while the interior wall on the construction side has a sprinkler system to help maintain dust. A series of environmental sensors monitor noise, air quality, dust, vibrations and odors in order to provide a more pleasant environment. Visible indicators will also alert passersby and the construction site to the current environmental conditions. With the upgraded look of this wall, people may actually beg to have construction sites go up in their neighborhoods! Via Yanko Design

Inspired by Euclidean geometry, the two geometries fit perfectly together to create vertical space for a prototypical residential tower designed for Lima, Peru.

Right Isometric drawn at 1.100 @ A1. This exploded Right Isometric shows the layers of the ground floor in my design and how they fit into there proposed place. Viewing the isometric drawing in wireframe allows you to see the thickness of walls and other interior objects that run throught the design.

The floors solid material is concrete, due to it’s sustainability. It is polished asphalt grey concrete. The wooden circles extruded in the floor are made up of tree trunks from the Nether edge trees that were cut down. The retail space floor design is intended to show the route of the journeys I took by foot, train and bike . I also wanted it to invite users to walk the route of the tree trunks round the retail space, as this encourages users to see every part to the space. As well as encouraging users to make purchases.

I have chose to use polished concrete because firstly it is cost effective and maintenance is lower. Another benefit is concrete is more resistant to high foot traffic, so you don’t have to move large display cases to polish the floor, only the primary traffic ways within the store. Less maintenance and longer service life as polished floors are easy to clean, requiring only occasional damp mopping. They also eliminate the need for messy waxes or coatings as well as the associated labor, time, and expense to apply them. The glossy surface of polished concrete resists the marks of forklift truck tires and staining from oil and chemical spills. Concrete is resistant to moisture transmission issues as it allows the floor to breathe and eliminates issues that arise with other flooring materials that seal off the concrete, such as tiles etc.

I chose the shape of a dodecahogeon for my changing room pods as i wanted to create a shell that would be made of wood to continue using the upcycled wood from the nether edge trees. Changing room pods are a more sustainble due to their durability and are becoming increasingly popular in the design world.

I have chose to use reclaimed timber beacause I wanted to show the public of Sheffield that the Nether Edge tree’s did not go to waste. So in order for my design to be sustainable it’s important to preserve what’s left and show what’s been lost hasnt gone to waste. Products made from reclaimed wood do this because they’re basically recycling old wood, preventing the need for further trees to be cut down.

These changing rooms are for users of the retail space to try on clothes. As well as ramblers wanting to change before catching a train to the Peak District or other outdoor spaces.

I designed this desk to be made out of tree trunks which woukld be from the the Nether Edge Trees that were cut down. The leaflet display is made of recycled acylic hexagons, to co-side with the theme of dodecahogeons and its surrounding shapes.

The first retail wall of Out-Of-Doors will provide a display for the shoes. Used materils like glass is sustainable as it is durable and has limited effects on the environment. I also placed some grass between each cyclinders to continue the theme of bringing the outside in. The curved shape of the wall is there to represent to the original journeys I took at the start of this project.

The second retail wall of Out-Of-Doors will provide a display for the clothes. Used materils like steel is sustainable as it is durable and continues the theme of bringing the outside in as steel poles are found in alot of places in the Peak Dristric such as cattle grids.
