Christmas Around the World
From your Publisher and Editor:
Christmas
around
the
world…yes, I love Christmas. I love presents, I love carols, decorations, the huge scrumptious meals with all the delicious desserts, the hustle and bustle of people running here to there, and yes, even Santa Claus. I know, you say “hey, wait a minute! In a Christian magazine? But in history, there was a man by the name of St. Nicholas who went around the countryside helping those who were poor….it is said, “The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and
sailors. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation, especially in Holland.” Is it so bad that someone in history loved children and went to the extent of giving away all of their inheritance to help them? Are we as Christians not also supposed to help people? Many Christians get so hung up on the wrong in Santa Claus or the Christmas Tree, that they really forget the true meaning of Christmas. So for now, let us forget the culture and traditions, the decorations, the gifts, the tree, and even Santa Claus, and what is left? Many people would say “nothing!” But is that really true? What is the meaning of Christmas that carries in every country and every heart where Christmas is celebrated even more than any of the above things? It’s LOVE…Love is the true meaning of Christmas, and the author of that Love is Jesus Christ!! Our first Christmas we look at to be the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Who cares if that is the “real” day or
not? Most everyone has birthday parties, so I believe Christmas is just a day set aside to remember when Jesus was born. Of course, it was the death and resurrection that brought about salvation for us, but had He never been born, he could never have died, right? So his birth is also a very important event. Christmas has always been my most favorite time of the year. I remember one year, I was shopping and the crowds were just awful! I went into Wal Mart (the ALL Shopper’s store!)…I was back by the videos…This man seemed to be trapped in the corner by a bunch of women looking for that special item they just had to have. He looked in every direction, but did not seem to see a way out. Looking frustrated and very discouraged at not seeing any hope to get out anytime soon, our eyes met, and I smiled and in a soft, quiet
voice whispered to him, “Just remember the reason for the season.” Sometimes, all it takes is maybe a little reminder or just a tad of patience and love to get you through the hustle and bustle and even the hard times that can come along with holidays. As I reflect on this Christmas season, I begin to think about 3 things: What we have, what need, and what we will give others.
WHAT WE HAVE: So what does this mean other than earthly goods? What I have is Jesus Christ in my heart…so I have salvation, which means so much more than just a word meaning one day you will go to heaven . You see, salvation is a package. Along with our ‘heavenly going after life,’ we also have a right to heavenly living here on earth. We have a right to healing, miracles, financial blessings, a happy home, friends, good family times, and anything else we need and actually things we just what we want, as long as they are prayed in the will of our Father. If we continue to believe the Word and speak the Word, we should be able to have “Heaven on Earth!” But is that the realm where most Christians live or are they still putting up with sickness, lack, and all the other things that satan wants to bind them up with? We MUST remember to stay in the Word
and live according to what the Word says.
WHAT WE NEED: A heart…Putting it plain, all of us need a heart for more than just ourselves or our immediate family, Church family, neighbor, etc. Jesus came to save the ENTIRE WORLD….not just America, Africa, India, or any one of the many other places on earth. He came to save the entire world. So, if He did this, should we not live by ‘His’ example and love everyone? Today, many people stereotype people from certain countries because there have been bad things happening in those countries. But what should we as Christians do? Do we say “forget you” because some people are bad apples, so we lump them together simply because they are not from your country, and believe they are all bad? I think not…Our love must look past the boundaries of color, nationality, and beliefs.
WHAT WE GIVE: If someone came to your door maybe your neighbor, or maybe someone who was a different nationality (because there is only one race – the human race), and ask for bread, would you give him a stone? According to Matthew 7:9-11 (AMP) 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will [instead] give him a
stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will [instead] give him a snake? 11 If you then, evil (sinful by nature) as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give what is good and advantageous to those who keep on asking Him.” Faith consists of asking, seeking, and knocking, with the sure promise that God will answer even more than any earthly father will answer the needs of his own children. God loves us so much, so very much…and I want to be just like Him. I want to hold my hand out and share what I have not only with my next door neighbor, widow down the street, poor children across town, but also with my brothers and sisters around the world. Here is something for you to think about as this Christmas season quickly approaches. There are many children around the world that will not have even a good meal to sit down to, let alone gifts under a tree to open, a warm bed to sleep in, or a family to hug and share their love with. In this magazine, I am sharing ads from around the world. Please take the time to read these ads, ask God what he would have you do, and if possible, share just a little bit of Christmas (Christ) with them. I know it will warm your heart, and will also warm the heart of some
child when they receive your gift. As you share, please let those ministries know you heard about them through Faith Unlimited magazine. I would love to hear from you also, if you would like to let me know what you have decided to do, and who you have decided to help this Christmas Season. This will be confidential, but it
will let me know that our work is not in vain. God Bless each of you, and remember Acts 3:6a that says, “Silver and Gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.” One of my Facebook friends posted this with a very true note that said, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” Let’s keep love on our list of
Christmas giving this year and share with someone less fortunate than you. If you have no money to give, please pray for God to open the ears of those who do have to give. Merry Christmas and may God Bless you this holiday season. http://www.history.com/topics/christma s/santa-claus
Matthew 1:18-21 says, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Have you been Christmas shopping lately? This is the season for buying that perfect gift for a loved-one or friend. Sometimes it seems hard for me to shop for my wife because I am not my wife. What I mean is, while she is not picky, I want to buy something other than that item she can set on a shelf and admire. My idea of a gift is something practical, something that can be used everyday from the day she opens it until the day she needs it replaced. This is the Christmas season and we have been given “The Perfect Gift.” All of mankind has been given the gift of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. John
3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God saw what mankind needed, as opposed to what mankind wanted. Mankind wanted to please God in some ways. But mankind needed a savior for all eternity. This is why we celebrate Christmas in our culture as the birthday of Jesus! Some groups call the pregnancy of Mary the “Immaculate Conception.” Another word for “Immaculate” is PERFECT. Here we find Mary, who was engaged to a man by the name of Joseph, and before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Who was the father of this child? Hollywood has come up with some seemingly logical answers. But you and I, as Christians should not be influenced by the latest popular opinion of this world’s view regarding our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We should remain focused on the timeless truth of God’s Word, which says that God, our Heavenly Father, by the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, impregnated Mary with His own seed.
Yes friends, Jesus is the seed of God Himself. And JESUS TRULY IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON! An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Yes, Jesus came to save Israel from the bondage of sin. But also, Jesus came to save “whoever believes in Him.” John 3:17 says, “For God {the Father} did not send His Son {Jesus} into the world {that's all of mankind} to condemn the world, but that the world {all of mankind} through {the selfless act of Jesus, all of mankind} might be saved.” Jesus came as “The Perfect Gift” to “save His people from their sins,” and “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, or if you know someone who does not know Jesus, share "The Perfect Gift" with them this Christmas season and always.
You can pray this or lead someone else in this simple prayer: “Lord Jesus, I believe that you are the Son of God and that you came to the earth and died on the cross for my sins. I believe
that God raised you from the dead and gave me the gift of eternal life. Lord Jesus, I invite you into my heart right now. I confess my sins to you and detach myself from all the works of darkness. I receive the covering of your blood that was
shed for me and I believe your blood washes away my sin. I believe in my heart and I confess with my mouth, that you are my Savior and Lord… right now… today… and I have eternal life. I am born again… I am saved. Thank you Jesus, Amen!” …Think about it!

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
We know that it has been said about the Christmas season that it is "the most wonderful time of the year," but for many it isn't. There are many people around us that are hurting. Some have suffered loss, depression, and are bound by fear and addictions. In the midst of all of the glittery decorations, bright lights, and celebrations; there is sadness. We, believers have the answer! We have Jesus! Many believers are too caught up in the busyness of the Christmas season, that they forget what it is all about! "Jesus is the Reason for the season!" We are His hands and feet here on Earth. The Earth cries out for the sons (and daughters) of God to be revealed, the Bible says. We have so much love and so much power inside of us! We have the goods to touch lives and see them changed for the glory of God! That is what every believer is called to do. During the Christmas season there are many opportunities available to reach
out with the love of God. In my experience, many are open to listen to "the Christmas story." We can bring them the truth of the love of God. Jesus is still alive and well. He loves them and wants them to spend eternity in Heaven and to have a victorious life on Earth. If you are anything like me, you enjoy all the beautiful decorations, giving and receiving presents, the smell of the Christmas tree, and deserts baking in the oven. I enjoy all of the fun of the Christmas season, but greatest joy and the most fun for me during the Christmas season and all year round is touching lives. That is the way we are supposed to live! We are supposed to be a blessing all year round! I want to encourage you to make the most of every opportunity during this time of year, but don't allow it to stop there. Ephesians 5:15-16 Therefore, be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise v.16 making the most of your time because the days are
evil. Continue to be a light in this dark world. Matthew 5:16 Let your light shine before men, that they might see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven. While you go about your decorating, buying gifts, and other celebrating; remember those who are lost and hurting. Let your sparkle and shine be more than the Christmas lights around your front door. Let the light of the love of God that is on the inside of you shine brightly! Love is a verb. It comes from a heart that has God's love inside of it and it is displayed by actions. Be the hands and feet of Jesus. Purpose in your heart to do so, like never before. Begin this Christmas season. Reach out with the love of God. You can touch lives and it can be "the most wonderful time of the year" for many more people, as you reach out and show and tell of the love of God.
CHRISTMAS
Why is there such an attack in our day on this one singular holiday, and everything else connected with God, and His word? In fact if I may be so bold, everything that made this country great is under attack! Our morals, our culture, is all being called into question. Even many of our own politicians are attacking our roots! Our nation is the most blessed country in the world for one reason, and one reason only and it can be found in: Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord! (Jehovah) Look at all of the other nations who have refused to have God as their Lord! Would you call them blessed? Russia, France, China, Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan, African nations, and all Islamic nations because they serve a different god These all (especially the communist nations) took God out of the schools, and finally out of the public arena. Please!! take a look at them now ! Do you find it odd that Russia is now welcoming the preaching of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ even in their schools, and we want nothing to do with God in ours? It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out, we should not take the path they took originally, or we will wind up like them!!
If other gods are so great how come all the nations who serve him are still riding camels, and in many areas are starving to death by the thousands? Opium (Poison) is the only crop they can grow? I agree! People have the right to serve anyone, or thing, they consider to be God. Then they must be willing to live with the consequences of their choice. We as Christians love the Muslims, and all people, we just don't choose to worship their god! Who has a country as wonderfully blessed as ours? It is all because of our God! Our forefathers came to this land to escape religious persecution. (Such as we see in this country today!) How did we get so far down the road that we don't need God anymore? The government thinks we should have separation between Church and state. (Which is not mentioned in the Constitution) All the while Bible scriptures are all over Washington D.C., including the Supreme Court Building! Who put these scriptures there? Our wise forefathers! Our Government was founded on JudeoChristian principles! The writing is on the walls for everyone to read! What really intelligent person could deny it? Most of our laws are based on the 10 commandments. What happened to common sense? Things would be different if
God were allowed back into the schools! Eventually we could get rid of the metal detectors, just as they were brought in as God was slowly ushered out! I have come to the conclusion that if we don't stand for something we will fall for anything. I for one am tired of this attack on all we hold sacred! I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this framed saying behind a principals door: “In case of atomic bomb attack, the ban on prayer in schools in the U.S.A., will be temporarily lifted. Sort of says it all doesn't it? We should take note of the fact that Gods blessings can be taken away just as quickly as the blessings came! Jesus was so right when He said The blind lead the blind and both will fall into a ditch. Now they are trying to take Christ out of Christmas. It's absurd! It's like taking
George Washington out of George Washington's Birthday !! Christmas is a day, December 25, that we as Christians have set aside to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Most scholars agree that Jesus was probably born in the fall of the year, rather than winter, but the purpose is still the same, whatever day it was! We celebrate with great joy His birth. Why? Christmas! Let's find out what the Bible says about this event! The Virgin Mary had just given birth to the Original Christmas gift, which was the Son of God! John 3:16 : For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life!(Be saved)
Luke 2:8-14 Now there was in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold the angel of the Lord stood before them, and the Glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them Do not be afraid, for I bring you good tidings of great joy, which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, Who is Christ the Lord! And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God ( referring to the Christian God) in the highest and on earth, peace, good will toward men. Praise the Lord! M Jesus through His birth, death on the cross, and resurrection,
has brought to all men and women the dignity that was lost in the fall of Adam. He also brought Salvation in its truest meaning and fullness to all who would receive Him as their personal Savior! Salvation means at least five things! Safety. Soundness. Healing. Preservation, and deliverance. Glory to our almighty God!! Jesus came to deliver us from sin, and the consequence of sin! And from satans bondage! That's why we celebrate Christmas! Christmas is a time for families to come together and enjoy the bounty God has provided! To share gifts and to enjoy each other, and give praise to the Lord! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, prosperous, New Year!!
Christmas around the World!
Although the dates; climate; types of celebrations and the reasons for them; the food and the central focus of Christmas are different for different people around the world the one thing that has remained unified about it are its varied traditions, purposes and religiously based controversial debates. The truth is many countries of the world and most of the world’s population are not religiously Christian based or focused. The idea of a ‘Christmas celebration’ is not traditionally relevant or recognized. This is why so many traditions and extraordinary practices are found which have absolutely nothing to do with the birth of Jesus. In this sense it is not the religious influence but the worldwide commercialization of the festive celebration that has taken such deep root that Christmas has now become a recognized and accepted holiday festival in most countries across the globe even though their religious foundation is not Christian and Jesus is not recognized as an important figure. Christmas has in fact become such a highly profitable and marketable enterprise worldwide that it is this that drives the festivity and not its celebration of the birth of Christ. Indeed it is also true to say that for about the first three
hundred years from the birth of Christianity there were in fact no celebrations that centered on the birth of Jesus and so, no what we now call Christmas. The first Christmas connecting itself to the church and Jesus is actually thought to have emerged out of the Roman reign of Emperor Constantine who became Emperor in 306 – 337AD. Constantine had converted to Christianity in about 312AD and immediately allowed freedom of worship and the building and use of churches. The connection here may have come from the Epiphany tradition of remembering the wise men, magi or sometimes called kings visit to Jesus. A few years after Constantine’s liberation of Christian worship Pope Julius I, who served as bishop of Rome 337 – 352AD declared a Christ’s birth celebration though actually neither Pope Julius nor anyone else knows when He was born (though indications suggest it was much earlier in the year). It is historically thought that what we now know as December 25th may have been selected because the Church in Rome wanted to compete with the existing pagan Winter Solstice and the ancient pagan Roman midwinter festivals called Saturnalia (god of Saturn) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (birthday of the sun)
which took place around this date. In other words it was conveniently already a time when people were celebrating pagan gods and this was an opportunity to introduce a Roman Church liturgical remembrance mass for Christ (Christ mass) as a Christian alternative. During the time of Constantine and Pope Julius I the Julian calendar (named after Julius Caesar) was widely used but in the sixteenth century (1582) Pope Gregory XIII introduced a more scientifically accurate calendar which became known as the Gregorian calendar that is widely use today and provides what we now know as the 25th December as the date for Christmas. Not every country adopted the Gregorian calendar at the same time and this created different timescales because there are about thirteen day differences between the two systems. From a biblical viewpoint we read in Ecclesiastes: ‘A good name is better than precious
ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.’ (Ecclesiastes 7: 1). Paul of course talked about his longing to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, our glorious place, as believers in Christ of eternity with God. The Old Testament Jews did not celebrate birthdays (the death of a prophet in fact had far more significance because it was their entry to heaven) and so this is why the birth of Abraham and Moses to mention just two are not recognized. This attitude to death is further supported by the first century Jewish historian Josephus who stated in his writings that the law did not allow such celebrations (which were pagan based and led to such behaviors as drunkenness); and even today some Rabbis do not condone these celebrations.
Like Josephus, during the1580’s Puritan Philip Stubbs wrote about the dishonor that the drunkenness and disgraceful behavior brought to God during Christmas festivities. Further concerns were also expressed over these celebrations because of its imbedded pagan ties. In England Puritan Oliver Cromwell (1599 –16 58AD) banned Christmas celebrations between 1649 – 1660AD. For the Christian of course it is the death of Jesus that has far more significance and importance than His birth. It is because of the sacrificial giving of His body to inhumane beating and lashes, and the shed blood of Calvary that victory over sin and defeat of satan was once and for all achieved. Again, if we consider the base of the Christian life, it is first grounded on death. It is death to the power of sin; death to self that is the most significant part of our victory. There is much debate over whether Christmas should
really be celebrated by Christian believers. One thing we cannot get away from is that the date has been set in the calendar and the lights, tinsel, giving of presents and much more are with us. In a similar way nearly everything we celebrate has a pagan connection. These include the days of the week, the months of the year and even Easter itself! Christian believers must of course be aware of the Christmas debate and perhaps more so of the cautionary words of Scripture which warn us about living in worldly ways, being caught up in worldly traditions and engulfing ourselves in arguments and disagreements. It is not so much about should Christians celebrate Christmas but how Christmas should actually be treated. There are no specific Scriptures on this subject but parallel help is available and we can perhaps learn much from Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 8: 1 – 13. Is what we choose a stumbling block to anyone?
The Power that Led to a Christmas Truce
The hostilities that began on July 28, 1914 will not conclude until November 11, 1918. Somewhat accustomed to the horrors and tedium of war, you slosh through the muddy trench to take your watch. But something about today is different. It is December 24, 2014, Christmas Eve. From both friendly and enemy trenches merry voices begin to call out. Then both sides start singing carols and songs, followed by requests for a cease-fire. What happens next is amazing. The enemies crawl from their trenches and congregate as friends in the noman’s land between the opposing sides. Finally, you creep from your watch and join the men who laugh and joke and exchange presents. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, experienced this spontaneous meeting of enemies as friends. Beginning on Christmas Eve, the “Christmas Truce of World War I,” as it is known today, extended through Christmas Day. In the midst of a war men stopped fighting and made merry. For a while enemies chose to be living examples of the proclamation of Luke 2:14 (NKJ), “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.” Their actions were a testament to Christmas’ power to reconcile. What is source of Christmas’ power to reconcile? Laying
aside all the bickering about the exact date of Christ’s birth and the exploitation of that birth, the power of Christmas to reconcile derives from the fact that Christmas is about the incarnation of God Himself. It is about “the Word” that “was with God,” and “Word” that “was God” becoming “flesh and” dwelling “among us” (John 1, 14, NKJ). It is all about the birth of a Savior, a Savior who was the promised Deliverer. A Deliverer from what? A Deliverer from the ravages and power of sin. Our Savior’s birth was promised throughout the Old Testament. Numerous prophecies made about Him in the Old Testament were fulfilled in the New. Speaking to Satan in Genesis God stated, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (3:13, NKJ). God made it clear that the Savior or Messiah would be born of a woman and that He would “bruise” the head or break the lordship of Satan over mankind. The fulfillment of His birth by a woman we find in Matthew 1:20 and Galatians 4:4. Galatians 2:15 (NKJ) records His triumph over our spiritual adversaries that made possible our freedom from their lordship, “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of
them, triumphing over them in it,” the “it” of that triumph being the cross. That He would be born of a virgin was prophesied in Isaiah. 7:14. The fulfillment of that prophecy we find in Matthew 1:22-23 and Luke 1:26-31. Related to Isaiah’s prophecy, some deny that it foretold Christ’s virgin birth based on the fact that the word translated virgin in 7:14 is ‘almah, which can mean virgin or young woman. Yet it is clear that the authors of Matthew and Luke knew that Isaiah used ‘almah as virgin, as both used the Greek word parthenos in describing the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, parthenos referring to a virgin or young woman who had not engaged in sexual intercourse. Furthermore, Mary, the mother of Jesus, having been told she would bear a child, queried the angel who brought that news in Luke 1:34 (NKJ), “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” “Know” is ginosko, a Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. Clearly, Isaiah knew that our
Savior would be born of a virgin, as did Matthew and Luke. Most assuredly, Mary, upon hearing the news she would bear a child, questioned that happening based on the fact that she was a virgin. Not only did Isaiah prophesy that the Messiah would be born of a virgin, he also stated that He would be the sacrifice for sin (Is. 53:5-12). Paul noted the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Romans 5:6 (NKJ), “For when we were without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” Furthermore, Paul in 5:9 stated, “Much more then, having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” By His blood we who embrace Christ as Savior are justified. Justified is a legal term that speaks of our reconciliation to God, of our being returned to right standing or relationship with Him. Saved is sozo, which speaks of
saving one “from physical death by healing” and “from spiritual death by forgiving sin and its effects” … and “in primitive cultures is translated simply ‘to give new life’ and ‘to cause to have a new heart’” (Word Wealth from the New Spirit Filled Life Bible). Recognizing the power of Christ’s incarnation, which made possible His later crucifixion and resurrection, it is fitting that enemies laid down their weapons and for a while experienced reconciliation during the Christmas season of 1914. Their doing so ever stands as a magnificent reminder of the power of His incarnation. Furthermore, their giving each other gifts reminds us of the greatest gift ever given to mankind. The nature of that gift we find in Isaiah 9:6 (NKJ), “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.” The giving of a Child speaks of
Jesus’ humanity. The giving of a Son conveys His deity. Other gifts pale in comparison to the richness of the gift that was and is Christ. For no other gift provides mankind deliverance from the ravages of sin. This Christmas season, may those of us who know Christ as Savior fully participate in remembering and acknowledging the gift that is Jesus Christ. May those of us who do not know Him as Savior come to do so that we may participate in the season with a sense of understanding and purpose. And, in addition to our giving gifts and celebrations, may we embrace and meditate upon the words that the angel proclaimed, “Do not be afraid, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:1011, NKJ).

Don't Forget the True Meaning of Christmas!
What do you first think of when you think of Christmas? There's gifts, egg nog, all the beautiful Christmas lights and displays, hot cocoa, Christmas caroling, Christmas trees, Christmas parades, etc. There's so many great things to look forward to this time of year. They don't call it the most wonderful time of the year for nothing. Although these things add so much excitement to this time of year, we need to remember the true reason for this holiday which is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The NIV of Luke 2:10-11 says,” But the angel said to them,”Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” This should be the most exciting thing for people about Christmas. Sadly, people seem to get more excited about gifts and they get too caught up in all the festivities going on around them that they don't give too much attention to the true reason for this holiday. Gifts will pass away, but eternity is forever. We should celebrate that Jesus was born into this world. I want to remind you that His birth isn't what saved us, but His death and resurrection did. We should be so filled with joy that God sent His only Son. The NIV of John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This is something worth celebrating. It shouldn't just be celebrated on this holiday, but all year round. I want to remind you to not get too caught up in all the festivities going on around you that you forget the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus Christ.
Knowing the Text but Missing the Point
Matthew 2: 1-15 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4
And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
I may come and worship him also. 9
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
5
And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6
And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7
Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
12
And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 13
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
8
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that
14
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15
And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. Matthew chapter two corrects some of our Christmas misunderstandings. We sing “We Three Kings,” but the Scripture doesn’t say there were three kings, it only mentions three types of gifts. It is highly doubtful only three men could “trouble” the entire city (v. 3). Also, with the amount of wealth they were carrying they probably didn’t travel alone. The Bible doesn’t even say they were “kings,” the Bible calls them “wise men” (Greek magoi). Our traditional manger scene attendees is incorrect as well. We have the wise men at the manger at the birth of Jesus, but the Bible has them in a “house” some time after the birth of Jesus (see verses 11 and 16). Tradition has even assigned these “three kings” names (Melkon--later Melchior, Balthasar, Gasper), but the Bible does not give us that information. Here is what we do know...The magi were seeking the King; Herod was opposing the King; and the Jewish priests were ignoring the King. Let’s look at the religious leaders for a moment (v. 4-6). The Chief Priests represented Jewish worship and the Scribes
represented the Jewish law. By computing the time mentioned by Daniel (Dan. 9:25-27), they knew the period was approaching when the Messiah should appear. When Herod asked them where Christ should be born, they told Him Bethlehem and loosely quoted Micah 5:2. They were 5-6
miles from the Son of God, but they weren’t interested enough to go see Him! They knew the text, but missed the point! They knew it, but didn’t do it! They had head knowledge, but no heart commitment to the Word! They had information but made no application of it to their lives.
Let’s not be as the Chief Priests and Scribes, having all kinds of knowledge but not doing anything with it! It’s one thing to know about Jesus, but it’s another thing to truly know Him! “Wise men” still seek the Lord....dummies don’t!
Christmas around the world. Now, that brings many thoughts to mind. There is a mountain of information on the Web, and, as we all know, if it’s on the Internet…….well, you get the idea. Anyway, the story goes that Christmas wasn’t Christmas in the beginning. Nothing in the Scriptures. Nothing in the practice of the first Christians. But, it finally got underway about the 3rd century. We won’t talk about the political issues, you know how December 25th was chosen because of an already established pagan holiday and the church was trying to get a better cultural foothold overall. Or that the celebrations connected to church sanctioned Christmas weren’t always suitable for….well….church. 1600s: Enter the Puritans. They, and other groups, thought to do away with Christmas all together. Obviously that didn’t happen. 1800s: Prince Albert of Germany brought the practice of the Christmas tree with him when he married England’s Queen Victoria (I love Christmas trees!). About those trees; more politics, but we’ll move on. We started sending Christmas cards about the same time. Not sure how we manage without Hallmark, but we did! Receiving
Christmas cards is a great way to catch up with long distance friends and family; updated family pictures, newsletters. It’s also a great way to remind people of the meaning of Christmas under all the traditions and habits and politics; to celebrate the birth of the Savior, the One by whom time is measured……unhappy atheists have to admit His existence every time they say what year it is. Gift giving actually has honest Christian roots; the original purpose was in memory of the gifts the (was it really 3?) kings from the east brought. If I said “SinterKlaas” is coming on Christmas Eve, would you have to ask? Yes, that’s the earliest name for Santa Claus, who really was a Dutch “saint” who gave out gifts in honor of Christmas. Of course, his look, along with his name, has evolved over the years, and our best rendition of him is actually based on a CocaCola advertisement from 1930s. I try to imagine what that first night was like, that first Christmas Eve. Of course, you had to be the right people in the right place to even be aware it was the most important night of history. Mary and Joseph, Elizabeth, a few kings, and a group of shepherds. Oh yes, and the angels. I don’t suppose there was anything “romantic”
about it; no harps, carols, no smell of wassail or cookies. No, instead, Joseph apparently barely got Mary into, we think, based on the way the Jews operated back them, a small cave, or at the most, a lean to. It would have had several layers of, you know, what places that house animals has, probably packed down from years of use. Laid in a bed of hay, after hours of labor, she gave a mighty heave and suddenly, God was in their arms. Imagine how Joseph, the provider, the kind hearted man who took in faith that Mary’s pregnancy really was of Divine origin, must have felt as he held a squirming baby up in the light and realized Who this was; the overwhelming responsibility that he was tasked with; the physical care and protection, as well as training that any other Jewish boy would get, and the overwhelming reality that he was caring for God in the flesh.
Imagine Mary, cuddling, kissing, changing, feeding, guiding, and knowing what his future was. A mere teenaged girl; even though in that day girls were prepared for domestic responsibilities and arranged marriages, this was far more than any young Jewish girl had ever been required to do. The awe of the Kings as they lay the precious gifts at the tiny feet of Jesus; some theologians believe the value of those gifts are what funded the family’s flight to and return from Egypt. The shepherds, after a sky filled with angelic beings; to our knowledge, this was a sight never seen before. Unreal. Fast forward to today. We all know all the horrible events going on as we wind down the historical clock. 2000 plus
years since Jesus’ triumphant bodily return to Heaven, having accomplished all He came to do in that time frame. Now we wait. Not for too long, we hope, because it’s really getting ugly out there, outside the Body. Yet there is still much to do. Within the local churches that make up the Body of Christ; much to do. Unity. Forgiveness. Removing beliefs and practices that don’t line up with the Word. And the missionaries; what of them? They are on the front line of the fields of harvest, in the fray. Many of them face physical danger, yet they press on, because “the fields are white unto harvest”. Until Jesus’ return, there is still time to snatch more souls from the snare of the fowler. The most important thing.
What can we do to honor Christmas this year, when there are so many things going wrong? Pray. First. Foremost. Always. Pray. Pray for our country, our government, our missionaries, our soldiers, for their safety, and their success. Give. Maybe even a portion of your Christmas budget; There are a number of very worthy organizations out there. Let that be our gift to the Savior Whose birthday we are celebrating. Look for a person or family around you that has less, and bless them. It’s fun to bless them anonymously, leaving a note of love with your gifts to them from Jesus. After all, we are giving in His name! Last, have a safe, wonderful, blessed Christmas.
Christmas in America
When I was young, we learned about Christmas in school, at home, on television, at our relatives homes, on the radio, while shopping and of course at church. It seemed as if the whole world knew about the reason for the season of Christmas. The goodness of God and His Son Jesus was clear and the knowledge of this goodness was prevalent in every sector of our nation. Families all over America spent weeks and months planning for the celebration of this important day, Christmas. Throughout my life, our family was focused on making travel plans to visit extended family, plans for attending Christmas shows or movies and making out our gift lists. We shopped for our special Christmas recipes and were so very thankful for all of our blessings. It was a joy to buy gifts for our family and friends to be a blessing to them. My parents reached out to the needy during this time, or to friends that were having a difficult time. We donated to charities and helped in every way we could. Every year, my mom would make extra food, desserts, and candies to give to the neighbors and friends for Christmas. It was just in our hearts to try to be a blessing. My husband and I have carried on these traditions. Some years we would invite family friends or neighbors who just lost a loved one, and sometimes we
had a big Christmas dinner or party to celebrate Jesus. It is truly a joy to fellowship with other Christians and to honor our lovely Lord Jesus. Bill and I usually give to local charities during this season, and to world-wide charities to help the needy around the world. We are looking for ways to be a blessing each year. All over this nation, families, churches, charitable groups are spending their time in finding ways to be a blessing to other Christian families, and to the world. Each group or family chooses who to reach out to by the promptings of the love of Jesus in their hearts, whether it be to the homeless, or to widows and orphans, the veterans or active service military personnel, to refugees or immigrants, to families that have great need, to the elderly in convalescent homes, to indigenous children on the reservations, or to the youth that are in crisis. The love of Christ is a tangible, transformational force in the hearts of Christians. It is a beautiful thing. We thank God for every Christian in every family, church or organization that is giving their time and life to ensure that the love of God is shared during the Christmas season! What glory it must bring to the heart of Jesus! From every leader of every Christmas play or program to
the organizers of the shoebox ministries to needy children to every outreach to those struggling in life, the proof of the love of Christ is clear and present in this generation. In the midst of the cultural assault on Christianity from the media, certain leaders, and even in the education system, Christianity and the goodness it brings to our nation still shines brightly! In the light of recent events and the atmosphere in America, now more than ever, it is our calling to let the light of Christianity be loosed into its full glory! The body of Christ is magnificent! There are so many wonderful gifts in each of the Christians in America and it is a joy to read about and help contribute to their outreaches and efforts! Every person can be a part of some type of event or project to help spread the goodness of God! In the wake of the Christmas season, the impact of these good works and the concerted efforts of Christians are recognized as a powerful presence and blessing to this generation. It is true
that good works do not obtain salvation for people, but only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ it is obtained. Ephesians 2:8. Yet, the good works are evidence that the love of Jesus is real and it is inspiring to the point of taking action. During this season, millions of people in America and around the world will be touched by the generosity and kindness of Christians! You would think that in light of this goodness that every people and nation would desire this great Christ who is able to so move His people to love. We Christians have not reached everyone with God’s goodness and message of Christ but we are certainly
stepping up our efforts in America and around the world. According to the National Philanthropic Trust statistics, last year, faith-based giving grew the most of all types of charitable giving in America totaling more than $103 billion and 72% of this amount came directly from individuals and families! There are so many excellent organizations that are doing the work sharing the Gospel and goodness of Christ. Thank you to every one of you that have given resources, time and prayer for these organizations! If you would like to help us at Bill Shepherd Ministries with our outreach projects to

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
The following recipes were submitted for publication by the Christian Culinary Academy in Cannon Beach, Oregon. If you are like me, I am sure you love trying these new recipes. Here are your recipes for your CHristmas enjoyment!
Merry Christmas!!
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105 Celebrating culinarily the holiday of Christmas, these are some of my culinary traditions. I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and have memories, traditions, and recipes that made Christmas special to me and I pray for
you also. It's all about Jesus -- and food-wise it's all about Posole! (Pronounced poh-soh-leh with the accent on the soh) Posole means many things. It means the corn that is the basis of a dish by the same name, a meal steeped in Native American History in that area. It was prepared to celebrate feasts and festivals. How appropriate that it be used for the major reason to celebrate. The dish has a personal meaning for me and for many New Mexicans. For me this meal and Christmas went together. These are my recipes and memories -- and forgive me if I go on; for such a simple dish, it has lots of love and attention that goes into it, and as you all know, it's all in the details. Our God is the God of details – Amen? The dish is also part of the traditions I grew up with called Noche Buena, in another Hispanic tradition known as Parrandas. Basically it is visiting, caroling and just spreading the joy; and
it is the time to deliver gifts and cards and just be in that spirit...and have a bowl of Posole! Everyone’s Christmas eve feast was similar but each family had different recipes so everything tastes a “little” different. And we love to compare! Chatting about who's Biscochitos were the best...(always ours haha) Also it is a time for enacting the Posada -- the reenacting of Mary and Joseph looking for room in Bethlehem. Folks reenacting roam from house to house, being rejected along the way, looking for someone to say "I have room," a reminder that you never know who is bringing Jesus to your door. Open it and share the joy. So people come to your house and visit for a short time. Some of us were outside making and setting up the Luminarias (little brown paper bags top edge folded neatly, filled part way with sand and lit with a votive candle), like the maids waiting for the Bride Groom, keeping their lamps filled and lit, waiting in anticipation. We also kept watch to re-light or re-candle a luminaria if it went out before midnight. I love the story we were told that they were to light the path to your house – so that the Christ Child would find his way to your house. So keep your lamps lit! And have plenty of oil...or in this case candles. I will scale these recipes for 12; the 12 days of Christmas, the 12 Apostles, the time when I was 12 and received girls underwear from my forgetful aunt!
have them cut up a Boston Butt or picnic for you and save the fat and skin separately so as to add just the right amount when cooking the meat and veg in the soup pot.
Mis en place: Cold weather, and the childlike excitement of preparing to celebrate the birth of our Lord. Ingredients: 1 lb. (450 g) dried posole corn. It's not hominy, but you can use hominy -- dried, canned or frozen. But use the dried, prepared as you would dried beans; sorted and cleaned. Cover the posole with water and soak overnight. Rinse and recover the hominey. Bring the water and posole to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the kernels "pop." (like cooking dried beans. It takes a couple of hours.) Add more water if necessary. It's a wonderful thing, really. (Part of the Posole experience is the cooking of the dish all day and reveling in the aromas and warmth; like the warmth you feel being loved by our Lord.) 3 lb. (1.4 kg) diced pork (lean cuts of Butt, Picnic, Shoulder) Cut as you would for stew. If you use a bone-in cut, leave the bone in the stew. I do have to mention the true traditional Posole has pork skin also as an ingredient. If you use a Picnic or Shoulder with the skin on, do not discard -trim fat off and cut into small pieces about the size of your thumbnail and add about ½ lb or so with the meat when cooking.) If you are blessed with a relationship with a meat-cutter or butcher
2 to 4 Tbsp (30-60 ml) Fat. This is just the traditional way for browning the pork, and onions. I know, I know -- saturated fat, but research it you may be happily surprised! Keeping the meat lean puts you in control of the fat! Good news to carry on into the next cooking season. 2 large sweet onions, large dice 1-2 head of garlic, chopped (at least I love garlic) 2 T (30 ml) dried Mexican oregano, whole preferably. Crush the spice by hand as you add it to the pot. Back to the Posole! Brown the LEAN meat in the oil. (Note: If you use fatty pork you may want to drain all but a couple tablespoons of oil.) Add the onions and cook until they begin to caramelize. Deglaze the pan with some of the hominy liquid. Add the hominy and liquid to all the remaining ingredients, cover, and simmer all afternoon and evening. Add more water if necessary and continue to simmer until the pork is very tender and begins to fall apart. The Posole pot is always on the stove for the duration of the serving. Usually, folks go to the pot and dish themselves up a bowl, cup or soup plate. It is a simple soup really...and we can put as much love into it as we are feeling...taste often adjust gently as persons will be seasoning it up to the max! Remember this is NOT Spicy on its own so it is just amazingly savory…the smell...Oh God is good! Then its all about the Table! Psalm 23 “He prepares a table before me.” Now, the table. It is a big part of it. The table has an abundance of condiments to personalize your Posole. As the
Lord prepares a table before us. The list is as endless as you want to make it. Some traditional basics are: 1 bunch cilantro, chopped Lime wedges 1 bunch scallions, or onions Radishes, cut in Julienne Cabbage, finely shredded A variety of Salsas. But Mandatory on the table is Red and Green Chile, a couple kinds and Green Chile, Roasted and chopped and/or Chile Verde Sauce These are chopped and set out in bowls along with the Chili Colorado, Chile Caribe, and Chile Verde. I am from New Mexico where the States official question is “Red or Green?” meaning what kind of chili do you want on your food...Tuna Casserole, pot roast, hamburger, eggs, Posole...whatever! For chili goes with about everything. And the official state of New Mexico answer is... “Christmas!” Which means along with the birth of Jesus...that you want red and green on your food...even Christmas is something to “Taste and see” in all our food and every day! Amen? For the Green-Some green Chiles (Preferably New Mexican Hatch Chiles, or Anaheim, or even some Jalapenos if you like it extra hot and these can be found in most grocery stores) *Green chile prep -- These are to be toasted either in the oven or grill, or over an open flame on stove or grill or on a cast iron pan. In each way Roast till Chile is completely blackened. Place into Gal Zip-lock bag or place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap and let rest until cooled to handle. This will make the peeling and
removing of the stems easier. Be very careful to wear gloves AND avoid skin contact. The stems, when removed, take out most of the seeds. Chop them together with 5+ garlic cloves and a pinch of salt. This is also your base for any good Chile Verde recipe. In fact I like to roast the Chiles, tomatillos, some onion in 1/4s and some whole peeled garlic in the same pan that way they are all adding a nice roasted flavor to the Chile Verde but that’s another recipe. Red Chile Prep - if you find the pods you are on your way to deliciousness: Ingredients and method: 24 dried red chile pods (i use New Mexican) 4 clove garlic 3 c water 1 T dried oregano (i prefer Mexican for this...crumbling the whole spice into the simmering sauce) 1 t Coriander seed toasted and ground (my Grandmothers secret) 1 C Water or so Red chiles are air-dried and should be rinsed before using. Pull out and discard the woody stems of the chile pods and remove the seeds. If you wish, you may also remove the veins. However, the veins add authority [translation: flavor and heat] to your chile. It's a matter of preference. Soak the chiles in warm water for 1 hour. Put half of the chiles, three cloves of garlic, a big pinch of salt and 1-1/2 cups of the soaking water in blender. Blend until it is a thick purée. Set aside and repeat process with the rest of the ingredients. Put purée through a fine strainer or food mill to remove any stray seeds and bits of skin. To make Salsa de Chile Colorado (cooked red
chile sauce): 2 Tbsp lard or oil 2 Tbsp flour (all-purpose) 1 c water ½ of the Chile Caribe made in step one. In heavy saucepan or skillet, melt lard or heat oil. Add flour, stirring until smooth. With a whisk, add water until it reaches the consistency of a gravy. Add all of the Chile Caribe (uncooked red chile purée) you made in Step 1 add the Oregano and Coriander seed and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Check for salt. If too thick, add additional water. This cooking process keeps the purée from separating. Now you have the makings for a perfect Christmas Posole Experience! Folks can fix up their posole in a multitude of ways. As you will find, the basic even soup! ….can be made to look and taste spectacular when glorifying God! So when you make this, it can be as simple as the soup or as complex as a banquet for lots of visitors. Have hot festive drinks like a New Mexican style cocoa w/ cinnamon and peppermint cane and or add a homage to another culture mulled cider w/cinnamon sticks ...perhaps, egg nogg …perhaps….Jesus….Definitely!!!
If it's not your tradition, just make it as we make all things -- something that glorifies God and gives honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is a special way to celebrate His birthday (no matter what day it actually was). Let Jesus be the reason...and nothing else. After all He is the reason for every day! As our food is part of our “everyday” Christmas on all our food! Invite friends and strangers in to share the joy of Jesus and let them know this is not just a once or twice a year festival -- it's an everyday celebration of new birth, resurrection, and new creation! I thank God for His great Gift of His Son. There is unimaginable pride and the seasonal opportunities ABOUND for opening up and witnessing for Him. I pray y'all have an awesome holiday season. We all say it every year but I pray as we grow closer to Him, we gather a larger and larger family so that when we meet, it's an unspeakably tumultuous God-extravaganza! We are a Royal Priesthood -- let's BE the celebrants God wants us to be. Let's invite some folks over to just have a blast about the Lord and party until we praise! Share food and the Good News! The Kingdom of God is a party! Rejoice as you cook! Taste and See! That the Lord is GOOOOOOOD! And by all means enjoy your traditions and those you are making each time we gather in His name and ask for His presence ...Truly a reason to rejoice!
Merry Christmas
