This issue of Faith Unlimited is dedicated to “Thanksgiving.” Within that theme is Veteran’s Day. Let us take time and be thankful for our military men and women both past and present who have and do give their lives to keep us free. Everywhere you see a star in this issue, click on it to hear a special song dedicated to our military. I am also thankful for all of my family and friends including those who have already gone. So, I dedicate this song by Michael W. Smith, “Friends are Friends Forever” to all family, friends and Veterans. God Bless You!

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When we talk about the subject of “thanksgiving,” many immediately consider the US Holiday, “Thanksgiving.” Then some will inevitably think of things they are thankful for. But in the verses above, the word “thanksgiving” has a different meaning. According to the Strong’s Concordance, the Greek word used here for “thanksgiving” means, gratitude; actively, grateful language (to God, as an act of worship): — thankfulness, (giving of) thanks (-giving). But to simply this definition, I would interpret it to mean; “grateful language to God as an act of worship.” Of course, the word “grateful” has a meaning in all of our hearts. Something or someone we are grateful for. But the word “actively or active” means, to be engaged in action; characterized by energetic work, participation, etc; or busy. In other words, as Christians, we must be actively

engaged in or working toward goals all of the time. We must endeavor to be a doer of God’s Word at all times. James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” But the New Living Translation says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” Doing the Word means to practice what the Bible says. And having thanksgiving or giving of thanks means to keep at it when it comes to doing what God’s Word says. The one thing the devil does not want Christians to do is be thankful. Why? Because being thankful requires us to give thanks. And Philippians 4:6-7 says, “6 Be anxious {worried, stressed or filled with anxiety about or} for nothing, but in everything by {or in} prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Here, the biblical usage of the word “prayer” means, prayer addressed to God. The word “supplication” means, petition. This is where we talk to God about our needs and make our requests to Him, through the prayer of petition.

But with all of our praying, with thanksgiving, we are told that by this method, we are to let our requests be made known to God. There is a great truth revealed here about answered prayer, which I believe has everything to do with using “grateful language to God as an act of worship.” Philippians 4:7 says, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” I believe that the key to answered prayer is, “thanksgiving.” You can come to God and tell Him what you are thankful for, but unless our thanksgiving becomes an act of our worship, we miss the importance of the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding. This scripture teaches us that God’s peace “will guard {our} hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When we put the whole thing together, it is apparent that worry and pray are opposites. In other words, the root of worry is fear. And pray is the fruit of faith. But fear and faith constantly oppose each other. And trying to live in both, will produce an internal war. Therefore, Paul writes to the church at Philippi and tells them to not be in fear, worry or anxiety about things that life brings against us. But instead, this is why Paul says, “in

everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving (which is actively, grateful language to God as an act of worship), let your requests be made known to God…” AND the peace of God, which is beyond all human or carnal understanding, “will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” So, should Christians be thankful? Absolutely! But being thankful is more than just saying “thank you” to someone; even to God. Now, do not misunderstand! Please say “thank you” every time it is merited. But if you do not

get anything out of this lesson except for one thing, please get this: When you approach God in prayer, do it with grateful language to God as an act of worship. Maybe you enjoy worship services where modern contemporary worship music is playing. And when the worship team is singing and it seems like heaven has just invaded the earth and the glory of the Lord has now filled the room and is encompassing you at that moment. Then you lift your hands and your voice and begin to give thanksgiving to God. At that time, you use language that

is appropriate for the act of worship to God and God alone. This is what your time of prayer should be like. So the next time you set aside some special time for God, allow yourself to get lost in a time of thanksgiving to God. The Holy Spirit will inspire you and right out of your innermost being will begin to flow a sound of grateful language to God as an act of worship to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, as you pray and as you live in Him. …Think about it!

I am grateful. I say “grateful” because I like the sound of it better than “thankful”. Of course, I won’t say “Grateful-giving”. Still. I’m grateful for my life. Grateful for parents who sought God before they made a move; who LOVED each other and conceived me in that love, not a one night stand. I did not choose their way; unfortunately, which leads me to my next point.

perfect church on this planet so God leads us to the one we’ll fit into best and that will fit best for us.

I am grateful for forgiveness because I’ve needed an unending supply of it over the years and God’s pit of forgiveness is bottomless and His sea of forgetfulness is bottomless and I’ve made extensive use of both. I’m grateful for my husband, more grateful than I can express. I didn’t seek God the first time, which lead to my need for that bottomless pit of forgiveness, but when that life had died and been buried, I did seek God, for His will, and He gave me a man He must have crafted just for me. I’m so very grateful for him.

I’m grateful for my vets. “My vets”, you say? Yes, my dad, my husband, 2 of my sons, and 1 of my granddaughters….so far. Fighting for our freedom; fighting to free others. Especially the ones of this generation who see past the political rhetoric to what is really important. Without who, along with God’s grace, this blog wouldn’t even be possible, because the freedom to speak it would not exist. I’m grateful for my country and what it stands for, in spite of all the hits it has taken these last few years. It’s still the greatest country on the planet and I will personally do all I can to help keep it that way.

I’m grateful for my “kids, grands, and greats”. Not because they are super human beings, although they are, each in his or her unique way, although by no mean perfect (they take after me that way), but just because they are. Imagine, at my young age of not quite 62 being the matriarch of four generations….grateful! I’m grateful for friends, many wonderful friends in the Body. They are indeed “iron sharpening iron”. A few, a very few, are particularly close; making up for my lack of siblings. They enrich my life more than they know. I’m grateful for my church, with all its fallible leaders and members; people who love Jesus and reach out to others and yet manage to step on each other’s toes, allow their tongues a bit too much wagging, then turn around and be so very encouraging to one let down. There is no

I’m grateful the Father has given us the power of prayer, of doing battle on our knees. I’m grateful it’s not too late to turn us around. I’m grateful beyond words for my Savior Jesus Christ. Literally beyond words. I’m grateful to have the ability to give into ministries who can, on my behalf, spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are not blessed with it…yet. What an amazing partnership to have. Could I go on and on? Yes! But now it’s your turn. Take a few minutes, or hours, or days.

What are you grateful for?

‘Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord is God! It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him, bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations’. (Psalm 100: 1 – 5) The Psalmist in this opening Scripture boldly says, ‘enter his gates with thanksgiving’ but what does this really mean? It is probably true to say that for most of us in today’s society thanksgiving are acts of giving thanks for something particularly good that has happened to us or someone we know. It is in this sense acknowledging the goodness and favour we have received. For others it is a special day set apart in the yearly calendar, a public celebration with a good opportunity to have time off work and study, visit friends and family and share a meal or traditional American turkey dinner. In both scenarios the thanksgiving is to do with something good that has happened. God is often not mentioned or thought about

other than perhaps a cursory prayer of thanks.

They truly knew their God and what He had done for them.

The celebratory day of Thanksgiving in America finds it roots in the gathering or harvesting of crops and the religious giving of thanks to God. Many other countries also celebrate a day of Thanksgiving or similar days generally known as Harvest Festival or gathering of crops but again for most, specifically giving thanks to God for His provision takes a secondary place or is left out completely. In fact various other common roots for celebrating these days can usually be found in pagan or idol worship or thanks for a significant historic event.

Psalm 50 helps us to understand this better for here we read that God does not need our offerings of the produce of the land as illustrated by the Jewish sacrifice of animals and giving of first fruits or the bringing of foods to Harvest festivals. Although these sentiments have a place and involve good acts they are wrong concepts of thanksgiving.

The biblical expression of thanksgiving is entirely different. In 1 Thessalonians 5: 18 we read, ‘in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus’. You see Paul explains that thanksgiving to God does not depend on what is good in our lives. It is not simply about saying thank you for receiving a blessing or winning a battle. Biblical thanksgiving is given to God in whatever circumstances we are in; in whatever our need may be. It is joyfully offered both in the good and the dark times; the rich and the poor times. That is why, even being unjustly put in prison Paul and Silas could pray and sing (Acts 16: 25)!

If we are to understand thanksgiving we need to understand Psalm 50 verse 14 which says, ‘Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving’ or to put this another way, that we should make thanksgiving our sacrifice to God. We probably normally think of a sacrifice as meaning to surrender something of value and that is of course part of it, but biblical the Hebrew word for sacrifice used in this Scripture is zabach meaning to kill or slaughter. In this sense it is not only about surrendering but ‘killing’ that which is valuable to us. What I mean is that we spiritually yield and die to our own life, interests and circumstances to give heart based thanks to God. That is why Paul said, ‘in everything give thanks’.

Whatever we are facing one thing is firm and sure, ‘the Lord is God’ (Psalm 100: 3). But there is more because this verse continues, ‘He made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture’ and verse five goes on to say, ‘the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations’. Almighty God, the creator calls us His people, the sheep of His pasture! So why should we give a sacrifice of praise? It is because, ‘he that brings thanksgiving as his sacrifice’ honours God (Psalm 50: 23). God did not have to, but He sacrificed His only beloved Son and Jesus sacrificed His

life for you and for me so that we, who through faith accept the precious sacrificial gift, would rise from spiritual death and a justified eternal torment in hell because of our sin to life abundant and eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven. What love, what goodness, what faithfulness to those He created! This point is well illustrated from the diary of the English preacher and cofounder of the Methodist Church John Wesley (1703 – 1791). John wrote: ‘I preached on the righteousness of the law and the righteousness of faith. While I was speaking, several dropped down as dead and among the rest such a cry was heard of sinners groaning for

the righteousness of faith that it almost drowned my voice. But many of these soon lifted up their heads with joy and broke out into thanksgiving, being assured they now had the desire of their soul – the forgiveness of their sins.’ If our soul yearning is the forgiveness of our sins we would make a joyful noise. We would serve the Lord with gladness. We would know that the Lord is good, we would know His love and whatever circumstance we are in, we would show our thanksgiving. It stands obvious to see that if thanksgiving is missing in everything we do not yet truly know the debt we owe and the horrors of our sinful nature.

“Ashley, I love your shoes!” “Are you kidding me, Lexi? I asked my mom for a pair of Prada pumps for my birthday, just to get a pair of knock off shoes instead. How lame!” “Hey, Liam! Dude, nice Ferrari. That car is such a girl magnet. I'm so jealous. I can't believe I have to drive this hunk of junk that my father calls a car. This totally stinks. Maybe you'll let me borrow your car once in a while.” Have you ever been in one of these scenarios or in a similar situation? Were you ever jealous because you couldn't have that really expensive perfume or cologne that your friend has? Maybe your friend has nicer things than you, and everything that you own just isn't good enough? Maybe your friend has that perfect family that you never had, and you secretly envy them. If so, then you need to change your attitude. The NIV of Exodus 20:17 says,” You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Covet means to want to own something. The NKJV of James 3:16 says,” For where envy and selfseeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” These Scriptures clearly state that jealousy and envying are sin, so you need to choose not to go by these feelings. You do that by casting those feelings and thoughts down and replacing them with Scripture. Even if you don't own the most expensive thing that there is, or if you only have one parent in your life, God wants you to be thankful for what you do have. The NIV of 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says,” give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Some people are dying, some people are homeless, and some people don't have any shoes at all. We don't even think about that when we are complaining about what we don't have. How selfish! Remember what you do have and give thanks to God for it.

Thanksgiving Day is a time when most of us gather with family, relatives and friends for the yearly holiday observance of overeating, watching plenty of football, napping and maybe reflecting on why we are thankful. In our household we do pause and each of us speaks out at least something we are thankful for in the past year. I like this tradition that does bring meaning to this holiday. Despite the current commercialism of the day that has almost turned Thanksgiving Day into Black Friday Eve, it is truly a time to pause, reflect and to pray. Many times in our busy lives, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give. It is only with gratitude that life becomes richer. We do have much to be thankful for. Whether it be for the roof above our heads, the meals in which partake, the ability to share with loved ones or the less fortunate, or just the presence of family and friends - none of these stand alone. God should be the foundation of our praise and thanksgiving. If we have God and know God, then we have more than enough reason to express our sincere thanksgiving.

In the United States the roots for our yearly observance of the Thanksgiving holiday dates back to 1622 when a ship bound from England to the United State held the various provisions that the Pilgrims, who landed on the east coast desperately needed. But the captain of the ship cheated them. This ship did provide the early settlers with the items they would need to trade with the Indians for food. Even with the additional food secured from the Indians, their food supplies were still low and rations continued to be decreased. At one point in 1623, rations given to the Pilgrims amounted just five grains of corn each day. Somehow, these brave Pilgrims were surviving on just five kernels of corn a day. As spring came and the planting time for the corn crop there was hope for a bountiful harvest. Sadly, a severe drought struck the area and soon withered the corn crop.

The Pilgrims turned to God for help for what they had no control over. They conducted a prayer service to ask God for rain. The prayers were answered the next day as gentle soaking showers were received off and on for two weeks. The corn soon revived and the crop was spared. Later that same month another ship of colonists arrived with people and provisions. The harvest of 1623 was the best yet in Plymouth and gave hope that they would never face starvation again. The Pilgrims paused around a table with the Indians and prayed a prayer of thanksgiving, and shared a bountiful meal much the same as many of us will be doing on Thursday.

This Thanksgiving Day, amid both the chaos and celebration, we can find comfort in the fact that God has blessed us with more than we even take notice of. We have all been provided with more than we deserve. A life of thanksgiving is reflected by the desire to share and help those in need so that all can rejoice and give thanks to God. Problems or challenges, as I prefer to call them, are still abound for many of us, but we do truly have much to be thankful about. Each day of life and good health is a blessing to be cherished and enjoyed. A loving family and great friends are another reason to be thankful. In our community the pocketbooks of some may not be as full of cash as they would desire, but few go hungry, or are homeless or don't have enough clothes to place on their backs. Sometimes, that's because of the goodwill and help from those who reach out and help

those in need. Again, that's a real reason to be thankful. We are thankful that many in our county have a job that helps on most days to buy groceries, pay our bills and buy some "liquid gold" fuel to pump into our energy-dependent vehicles. I find it hard to express real thanksgiving without reference to and acknowledgment of God and a look at what God's Word –– the Bible –– says about being thankful. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 we read: “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” The Apostle Paul tells the Thessalonian believers that God’s will for them is to be thankful. We want our children to show gratitude to us and to others. God wants the same thing from us. In Colossians 3:15, we read: “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

Nestled in the middle of a comparison of our life before salvation and what our life after salvation should be like is this command to be thankful. Thankfulness is a sign of a changed life. Even in simple things we should be thankful. Don’t reserve your praise to God for only the big things in life. Recognize that God is the giver of all good gifts in our life, great or small. Let us give thanks that God does not slumber or sleep. He always watches over us. We are ever in His hand, ever in His care. The Lord is our shepherd. We shall not want for any good thing. So look around and while things aren't perfect - and far from perfect in some areas of our lives, community, state and nation - we do have plenty to pause, bow our heads and thank the Good Lord for our many blessings. If we see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies within us.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 "In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." Do you notice how this scripture says that we are to give thanks in everything, not for everything? Not everything that happens to us in life comes from God. John 10:10 tells us that the thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy. It also tells us that Jesus came to give us the abundant life. If what is happening is killing, stealing, or destroying, it hasn't come from God! The Lord isn't the thief. Religion teaches that God brings bad things to us. Religion is a thief that keeps us from the truth of the word of God. The devil uses that to steal, kill, and destroy. The Bible tells us that even the Lord's people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge. Just because something is taught by someone in a leadership position, doesn't mean that it is what the Bible says. We must know what the Bible really says in order to experience it in our lives. When we don't know that God is good and that He is for us, we will be robbed of His promises and won't know to stand on His word in our lives. When are we to give thanks? Are we to give thanks when we feel like it, or when we are having a good

day? NO! In everything, we are to give thanks. When things are tough, it is easy to focus on ourselves and how difficult things presently are. We must keep our focus on the goodness of God and the truth of His word. Psalm 107:1 "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; for His mercy endures forever." Sometimes we feel like we don't have much to be thankful for when things aren't going our way, or when we are hit with the most difficult of circumstances, but we do! The Lord is good and His mercy endures forever! We must begin to open our mouths and worship the Lord because He is good and His mercy endures forever. We must step out and do this no matter how we feel, or what we are going through. Then, begin to think of what else you have a reason to be thankful for. Thanksgiving isn't just a holiday; it is a heart attitude that we must have every day. The love God has for us and His goodness towards us is more than enough to be thankful for. When we worship and praise the Lord, before too long our attitude will change. Mark 11:24 "What things you desire, when you pray, believe

that you receive them, and you shall have them." Philippians 4:6-7 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." You see, prayer isn't just asking. It is thanksgiving, too. Pray in faith, believing that God heard you, thank Him for the answer, and spend some time each and every day worshiping the Lord and thanking Him. Begin to put this word from God into practice and you will have a happy thanksgiving every day!

It's almost unbelievable, but it’s almost Thanksgiving again! We are so blessed as Americans because our forefathers set aside a day to give thanks to the One and Only, Almighty, Compassionate God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! We, as Americans, and as born again Christians, have so much to be thankful for! Just look at the Word of God in: John 3:16! “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life!” Hallelujah! We could spend every moment of every day giving God thanks and it still would not be enough! Hebrews 13:15 says, “By Him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His Name!” . . .what's left but praise! May I take the Liberty of paraphrasing that verse for you? Because of what Jesus has already accomplished for us through His death, burial, and resurrection, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God; that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His Name! Katherine Kuhlman said it like this, “In the light of what Jesus has already accomplished through His death, burial and resurrection, what's left but praise! (And thanksgiving!)” Let's ask ourselves the question, “What has Jesus done?” Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was

upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed!” Not only that, but He was manifested to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8. Do we owe Him a debt of gratitude or what? We need to develop an attitude of gratitude! According to the Word of God we are told to come into God's presence with Thanksgiving (Psalms 100). Not grumbling and complaining, but with sincere, heartfelt, thanksgiving! Really if you want to know the truth about it, this is a major part of living by faith! Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him!” Now bearing this in mind let's turn to Psalms 69:30-31 which says, “I will praise the name of God with a song, (your will is involved) and I will magnify Him with thanksgiving.” This also shall please the Lord! Wait a minute! I thought you couldn't please the Lord without faith? So it must be that Thanksgiving and praise must be Faith in action, because it pleases the Lord!! . . .Thank God we have victory! Colossians 1:12 says, “Giving thanks unto the Father who has made us able to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light! Thank God we have an inheritance in Christ! According to Romans 8:17, we born again ones are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ! All that Jesus has inherited, we have inherited through Him! Glory to God!! Corinthians 15:57 says, “Thanks be unto God who gives

us the Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” Thank God we have victory over sin, sickness, poverty, devils, and demons, fear, and depression through what Jesus has done! Actually we have victory over all the works of the devil in Jesus Name! (Luke 10:19) God through the death burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ has provided exceeding abundantly above all that we could ask or think! (Ephesians 3:20) Everything a human being could imagine (that is good and lovely) is already provided! All we need to do is begin to thank Him for His provision, walk in the light of His Word, and we will begin to know in reality the fullness of that provision!! In fact, we can give thanks before we see the answer with our natural eyes, because we know God has promised and that He cannot lie! Shout unto God with a voice of triumph! Thank God!!

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJ) Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:18, some have assumed that Paul was telling Christians to give thanks “for everything”. However, that is an incorrect assumption. Paul is not telling us to give thanks “for everything,” but “in everything” (en pas) to give thanks. That distinction is extremely important as it is inappropriate to give thanks to God for things which have not proceeded from Him or for which He is not responsible. Continuing this line of thought, it is wise to remember that not everything we experience comes from God. James 1:17 (NKJ) reminds us that “every good gift…comes down from the Father of lights.” Good is agathos, which speaks of that which is good “in a physical and moral sense, and which produces benefits” (“Word Wealth” from the New Spirit Filled Life Bible). Things that we experience which are not good in a physical or moral sense, producing no godly benefits, are not from God. That being so, we should not thank God for them. Scripture gives a myriad of examples of things which are not from God. That being so, we should not give Him thanks for them. For example, in Luke

13:10-16 (NKJ) Jesus loosed a woman with a “spirit of infirmity”. The ruler of the synagogue responded with “indignation” toward Jesus “because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath.” Jesus rightly responded to His detractors, asking, “So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound – think of it – for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Clearly, the infirmity that had mercilessly bound this woman for eighteen years did not come from God. That being so, it would have been inappropriate for her to thank Him for it. However, it would have been quite appropriate for her to thank Him for loosing her from it. Related to sickness, which many incorrectly view as coming from God, we would do well to consider Jesus’ own words and actions. In John 14:10 (NKJ) Jesus queries, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” Jesus made it clear that the works that He did were done by the Father who dwelled in Him. Did Jesus during His earthly ministry make anyone sick? Obviously, doing the works of

His Father, He did not. Furthermore, Jesus in John 14:9 (NKJ) stated, “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” How so? Being one with the Father in essence and purpose, Jesus during His ministry did the very same things the Father would do. That being so, it would behoove us to remember that Jesus, though He did heal many, never made anyone sick. It would also behoove us to remember that Exodus 15:26 reveals God as YHWH-Rapha, the Lord who heals. Another example that prepares us to differentiate that which comes from God from that which does not is provided in Ephesians 6:10-18 (NKJ), which focuses on the topic of spiritual warfare. Verse twelve reveals that our warfare is not “with flesh and blood,” human entities, but with spiritual entities. Related to this warfare, verse ten reminds us to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Additionally, verses thirteen through eighteen detail our spiritual armor and prayer, all

good gifts from God integral to our successfully dealing with spiritual opposition. For the attacks of our spiritual enemies upon us we should not thank God, as those attacks did not proceed from Him. However, for the strength, weapons and authority delegated by God to stand in the midst of those attacks and overcome them we should thank Him, as they come from Him. Tragically, we Christians often attribute to God things that did not come from Him. That being so, we then sometimes proceed to thank God for them. Such convoluted thinking demonstrates and helps to create much confusion related to the character and nature of God. Among those under the sway of such thinking, some try to appease with comments like “God is in control. Many things, rather than proceeding from God as a result of His

control, are the result of other factors. They are the product of our ungodly choices, the ungodly choices of others, the effects of sin in this world and attacks by our spiritual enemies. By incorrectly giving thanks to God for them rather than effectively dealing with them we often enhance and prolong their effect. No matter what we are facing, it is imperative that we deal with it effectively. If it involves the consequences of our sinning, we need to confess our sin and depart from it. If it involves the sinning of others, we need embrace God’s wisdom that our understanding is enhanced and we can appropriately follow the leading of the Holy Spirit related to it. If it involves the effects of sin in this world, we need to recognize that His grace empowers us to overcome those effects. If it

involves the attacks of our spiritual enemies, we need to understand the benefits of our spiritual armor and pray, standing and acting in the authority that God gives us over those enemies. Whatever we are in the midst of, it is appropriate to give God thanks, as there is so much for which to be thankful. Our salvation is a gift from Him. Life itself is a gift from Him. Godly friends and loved ones are a gift from Him. The grace to deal with and overcome horrid situations is from Him. However, thanking Him in the midst of everything and for everything are two very different considerations. Let us always be thankful to Him in the midst of whatever we are going through. However, that does not mean we are to be thankful for everything, as not everything we experience comes from Him.

Throughout the Bible, men and women have given thanks and worshipped God for His goodness! In both the Original and the New Testament, people of God gave thanks daily for their food, weekly in the Temple for the Word and Law of God, for His wisdom and guidance, annually at each Feast and observance, they would give thanks and even build memorials to remember God’s goodness and His deliverance from their enemies, and from sickness and oppression. Giving thanks to God was so important, people were selected to give thanks and praise to God 24/7! 1 Chronicles 16:4 And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel: The word “thanks” is the Hebrew word Yadah, from the root word Yad, which means to lift up the hands and revere and worship, to show great appreciation, to laud, to praise with your strength. HEBREW 3027 Yad, root of Yadah 3034 Jehosephat knew of the power of thankfulness and praise unto God when he appointed singers to praise God in front of his army! God delivered them from their enemies as they sang and gave thanks to God! 2 Chronicles 20:21

21

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endures forever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. God inhabits the praises of His people, His Presence is attracted to the praise and thanks given to Him. His Presence destroys all evil and brings His glory, His goodness, His power into the atmosphere! Psalm 22:3 3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of your people, Israel. Thankfulness is appreciation, a form of love and adoration. When you are thankful, you are remembering God who provides all good things for you. Giving thanksgiving to God is giving acknowledgement of Him and His glorious attributes. Giving thanks to God is an act of faith! It is praising Him because He is worthy! I have witnessed the power of thanksgiving to God in my own life many times and in ministry

also. The very first time I prayed for someone to receive the Holy Spirit, the Lord showed me that the person did not feel worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit even though he had asked God for His Holy Spirit many times. The Lord showed me that he needed to receive it through grace and to instruct the man to ask God for the grace to receive His Holy Spirit. The man did as the Lord instructed and asked for the grace to receive His Spirit. Then the Lord showed me that to release faith to receive the Holy Spirit, the man needed to begin to THANK GOD out loud for giving him His Holy Spirit. The man began to thank God with his hands raised up, and the third time he said “thank you God for giving me your Holy Spirit,” the power of the Holy Spirit fell upon him, and he began to shake under the power of God’s Presence. He began to cry out to God, and say, “Glory to God!” “Thank you Lord” Thank you Jesus” and he wept and laughed! It was such a memorable time. I

was weeping for him, that God was touching his life and giving him the precious Holy Spirit indwelling. That man was never the same. He became a different person, humble before God, hungry for His Word, and had love toward people. Previously this same man was hardened by life, by abuse, by alcohol, cruel and unmerciful. This same man had studied the Bible in order to argue its points, to try to know God with

his mind. He only became arrogant at the amount of knowledge of the Bible he had obtained. After this experience with the Holy Spirit, he began to worship God regularly, pray in the Spirit, minister under the anointing, help build churches, and teach his family about God. Every time he would lift his hands and give thanks to God, the glory of God would envelop him and then pour out of him!

Our Holy God is worthy of High Praise and Honor, and many thanks! It is He who has made us! It is He who has saved and blessed us! Give thanks with a grateful heart and see the wonder of God’s Presence manifest to you! Happy Thanksgiving! Blessings to you and your family!

Once again it is time to prepare to be officially Thankful! Food wise while we think about trying new dishes or techniques remember this is the time just like we change the batteries in our Smoke alarms to remind us of home safety we also re-call to mind the food safety reminders we all get…Keep the Holidays safe and sane ( as possible…I know how family can be…). We find ourselves connected to the rest of our world in many ways especially by food. That is why for those who strive to be continually thankful it is important. As the Word is revealed in Psalm 100 what is called the Thanksgiving Psalm the Psalmist shouts: 1

On your feet now— applaud GOD! 2 Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence. 3 Know this: GOD is God, and God, GOD. He made us; we didn’t make him. We’re his people, his welltended sheep. 4 Enter with the password: “Thank you!” Make yourselves at home, talking praise. Thank him. Worship him. 5 For GOD is sheer beauty, all-generous in love, loyal always and ever. Short and just brimming with Joy…and that is the foundation or basis of our relationship with Jesus…. And now we take that

attitude and face the Holidays before us…Now what? Think back...to the basics of cooking …Safety and deliciousness…Taste and See that the Lord is Good! A good time to be reminded of the basics for our celebrations….What do you remember your mother saying when time to eat? “Wash your hands!” Well some things don’t change and is the most important thing you can do. Not just when you eat but when whenever you are working in your kitchen. Clean hands touch clean dishes as Holy hands are raised up in worship…Remember that in the old covenant priests were not allowed into the “presence” until they had washed…many many washing ordinances by God…Washing is very important. Jesus washed our sin away…we are washed in baptism coming to the living water. Simply installing a Roll of paper towels very near where you wash your hands...and remembering to wash hands properly will keep you and your family healthier and safer.....Reminder... Wash in water as hot as you can handle with soap for at least 20 seconds… after rinsing, dry with paper towels. And USE THE PAPER TOWELS TO

SHUT THE WATER OFF. For in the “heat” of cooking business we may use the sink to wash and in doing touch the faucets with salmonella contaminated hands to turn them on… if we put our “clean” hands on them to turn the water off well…you get the message. As we are wrestling with turkeys and trying to cook 10 things at once …keep that thermometer handy and keep a bottle of sanitizer handy. Not the hand sanitizer many have become aware of but an allpurpose one to cover all your sanitation needs. The simplest and most effective way is to keep a mix of 10 ml bleach to 1 L (That’s 1 Teaspoon per quart or 1 Tablespoon per Gallon) of water in spray bottles and spray your washed and rinsed dishes, pots, utensils, work surfaces and well anything with a handle

on it ( Doors, Drawers, knobs, instrumentation and tools… including the faucets! This mixture is to be used on items that have already been cleaned and rinsed. It can also be put into a sink and items placed in it for a couple minutes. REMEMBER TO AIR DRY WHAT YOU USE. Towels can be a great cross contaminator…so what does this all have to do with cooking? Seemingly not much but that is how we show the Love! It will keep you and your loved ones healthy and happy enough to enjoy the Holidays, and your food cooked to perfection! Safely. Let’s talk Turkey. It is the star of the table so it is important to make it The Turkey is worth the extra time we put into it…A Word about Brining your bird. No matter the cooking process Frying, BBQing, Smoking or Roasting…Brining

will make the results better…moister and tastier. My tips are: 1) Keep the brine simple: Heat a ratio of 50 g Sugar and Salt per liter (That’s ¼ Cup each of Sugar and Salt per quart) of water till Salt and sugar are dissolved then cool it before covering your bird. It will take 3-4 liters (about a gallon) to cover a 5.56.5 kg ( or 13.5-14.5 lb) defrosted or fresh bird. Another tip is: I use the produce bins in our refrigerators...the ones at the bottom usually will hold a bird. If you are a big family and need a very large bird you may want to consider having two turkeys ( for more on that email me) To the brine I would also add a few bay leaves, Peppercorns even a dried chili and a few Garlic cloves are nice additions…just don’t overdo it...Soaking for 12-24 hours rotating occasionally beforehand is vital...Now that you are done

Brining your bird, rinse, pat dry, and prepare your bird as you usually would...Remember... and God Bless you all as you are...Thankful! RECIPEEZ FOR THANKEY DAY! Using the traditional in a different way ...making the traditional nontraditional, international and inter ...um...Denominational if you will ;) Solomon in Ecclesiastes 1:9 said “...there is nothing new under the sun” It’s just how we co-create with God in how we put things together ...God created the entire world for our good pleasure and wants us to taste and see that the Lord is good! So let’s take a journey around the world in one meal to kind of share the creative experience God went through creating us! I am going to assume you know how to roast turkey and now that you read the previous article you know about brining lets add some international ingredients and give this Bird a “round the world” flavor influence…From Peru to the Deep South USA, to Canada, and having Pumpkin in a different way and in a different place! Yeah its odd, but You will love it...as we know the first two letters in GOD are GO and we go! And the last two letters are OD... Odd isn't it? That to the world God is odd...not logical but Holy Spiritual! Exotic but do-able from your local grocery store. Let’s go First course...Course you say? Yes, instead of the mass of finger edible we traditionally abuse ourselves with shift gears and change our culinary attitude to enjoy Pumpkin in a different way and place as we open the feast and close it with Pumpkin creations we can see the variety of how we can take a thing and make it new...Kind of like what God did with us!

will determine the servings the ingredients also would be adjusted for taste and consistency looking for a velvety smooth and savory soup if you save the seeds to roast use some to garnish the soup ~ Chef Leo Yield 8-10 Ingredients 1 whole baking pumpkin, approximately 4-6 pounds, rinsed 2+ teaspoons vegetable oil 1+tablespoon unsalted butter ½-1 small yellow onion, diced 1 teaspoon kosher salt TO TASTE 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 small apple, peeled, cored, and diced 1 + cup low-sodium chicken broth 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 ounces goat cheese 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Make a lid on the top of the pumpkin by cutting around the stem at a 45 degree angle. Like you were going to carve it! Make sure the opening is large enough to work within. Remove the seeds and fibers with a metal spoon or ice cream scoop and kitchen shears. Reserve the seeds for roasting yum! Brush the exterior of the pumpkin and the lid with vegetable oil. Oil a round casserole dish large enough to hold the pumpkin and place the pumpkin inside. Combine the butter, onion, salt, garlic, apples, chicken broth, and heavy cream in the hollow pumpkin. Replace the lid of the pumpkin to cover. Bake for 1 1/2 hours. Remove the lid. Add the goat cheese and thyme and bake an additional 30 minutes, uncovered. Remove the pumpkin from the oven, and gently scrape some of the flesh into the soup mixture. Puree with an immersion blender to desired consistency, being careful to avoid the sides and bottom of the pumpkin. By all means TASTE before serving seasonings and consistency! Put back lid and present it with pride! Thanks to Edicaas for the cover pic of the pumpkin!

Now for the main course...roast beast! (ha-ha like what the Grinch carved) We do this with a Peruvian flavor profile, and traditional ingredients in a new way...I know, I know some things are sacred like Grandma's Stuffing or gravy...well if so I suggest making 2 small turkeys and let the folks enjoy 2 different takes on a wonderful bird! You never know what you will have for Christmas or next time you have Turkey! Remember most fridges have two produce bins at the bottom ...for 2 turkeys!

Roast Turkey: Ingredients: 1-10 lb turkey brined in salted water for 8 hours, drained and patted dry with paper towel Marinade: ½ cup Soy sauce 2 onions, chopped ¼ cup apple cider vinegar Juice of 1 orange 3 sprigs parsley 3 sprigs thyme

Sauce: 3 cups sweet white wine or apple juice 3 cups chicken stock or turkey stock 1 cup dried cranberries and apricot compote. You can make the compote cooking the dried cranberries and chopped apricots with half the amount of sugar (by weight), and one cup of water.

Boil at medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and syrupy. 4 oz. butter ¼ cup parsley leaves, chopped Salt and pepper

Decoration Mint leaves Fresh (or dried) Cranberries Grape tomatoes or Golden Cape gooseberries

Preparation: 1. Combine the ingredients for the marinade, and marinate the turkey for two hours. Drain and reserve the marinade. 2. In a bowl, combine the ingredients for the stuffing, season with salt and pepper, cover the bowl, and keep in the fridge. 3. Heat the oven to 300ºF. Season the turkey with salt, pepper, and thyme. Add the stuffing to the cavity, tie the legs loosely, and tub all the skin with oil. 4. Bake for approximately 2 1⁄2 hours (20 minutes for every two pounds), basting with the apple juice and the chicken stock, every 30 minutes. Taking the temperature in the thigh leg area to just where it hits 165 degrees. At this point or even 160 pull it out to rest, check temp again after 10 minutes and you should be at or slightly above 165. This insures a moist and juicy turkey. 5. Take the turkey out of the oven, transfer to a plate, cover with foil and reserve. 6. Strain the pan juices into a saucepan. For the sauce: 1. Boil the reserved marinade until reduced by half. Add the juices from the baking pan and the compote and continue boiling. 2. Add the butter and parsley, cooking at low heat until smooth. 3. Serve in a sauce boat. Decoration: Put the whole turkey in a plate, garnish with golden berries, grape tomatoes and mint leaves.

Now I know at this juncture we'd be head long flying towards dessert and while you all may have a plethora of desserts there is one that reigns supreme and that is the Pumpkin Pie. Can I improve yours ...not really...if you need a recipe actually the one on the can is wonderful and speaks to me of the traditional and there is room at this table for the traditional BUT WAIT! We forgot a side dish that is amazing and regional since we are going off the traditional path I discovered a new favorite when I was loving my Grits...I always loved Corn bread stuffing so after much experimenting and just loving the flavor of Shrimp and Grits here is a recipe for those of you who love a stuffing with oysters in it...the early natives ate lots of such seafood enjoy this on the side and you are off to have a fantastically memorable Thanksgiving feast...Enjoy this :

Shrimp and Grits Stuffing Chef Leo 1 pound peeled, medium-size raw shrimp 3 cups chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon salt TO TASTE 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper TO TASTE 1 cup uncooked stone ground regular yellow grits 1/2 cup butter 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs doesn't have to be seasoned. 1 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 325°. De-vein shrimp, if desired. 2. Bring broth and next 2 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk in grits slowly, and return to a boil; reduce heat to low, and stir in butter. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat. 3. Stir together eggs and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl. Gradually stir about one-fourth of hot grits mixture into egg mixture; this tempers the eggs and veg. Bake at 325º for 55 minutes to 1 hour or until mixture is set. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve on the side. After the soup and meal your family and or guests will be amazed...and during the game you can keep thanking God by saying, “Praise the Lord and pass the Pumpkin Fudge!”

RECIPES FROM THE HEART

A Collection of Recipes from your publisher’s family and friends that are some of her favorites! I hope you enjoy them!

I like to call the following recipe “The Hanshew Family Secret Enchilada Recipe” because it was given to me by my husband’s Grandma Sanchez … It was given to me as made from scratch, not from using canned enchilada sauce. The Sauce and ingredients in the sauce is what makes it a secret! Well it was a secret, until now! Ingredients: 3 lbs. Hamburger 3 Packages Flour Tortillas (10 each package) 1 29 ounce can Tomato Sauce Flour Oil Chili Powder Cumin Salt Pepper Garlic Powder 1 Yellow Onion diced (optional) 2 large bags of Monterey Jack shredded cheese

Directions: Cook hamburger in skillet; drain. Set aside.

Sauce: Add approximately 1/2 cup oil to sauce pan and heat. Add flour to oil as if making gravy. (Approximately ½ cup or enough to thicken). Cook, stirring so no lumps and until light brown. Add entire can of tomato sauce slowly while stirring. Fill can with water. Stir sauce continuously, and as it thickens add water slowly until the sauce is a thinner consistency.

Add salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste. Add 1 TBL Cumin. The more you make this recipe, you may want to increase or decrease the amount of Cumin.

Do this to remaining 4 tortillas with sauce. After filling the 5 tortillas with ingredients and putting in baking pan, cook 5 more tortillas and do the same as above again. 3 pounds of hamburger usually makes about 25 enchiladas. (Depending on how much you put in each tortilla. Once you get all tortillas made into the enchiladas and in the baking pan, add more sauce to the top of all the enchiladas. Then add more cheese on top of the enchiladas. If you are going to make 2 high, then do one layer and add sauce and cheese before adding a 2 nd layer. Place in oven and heat until cheese is all melted and enchiladas are hot.

Now to what makes the recipe our secret‌.. Add Chili Powder (about ½ of a 2-1/2 oz bottle). The secret is to add chili powder until the red tomato sauce turns to a deep burnt orange color.

Since families usually serve Ham and/or Turkey on Thanksgiving, these make a wonderful added dish for those who do not like ham or turkey, or for the day before.

Cook until flavors mix well.

Serve with your favorite tortilla type chips and Salsa Dip

Heat tortillas in a small amount of oil (about 1 tsp per tortilla). Heat one tortilla and put on a plate. Add about 1 tablespoon sauce on top of tortilla. Heat 2nd tortilla, place it on top of the first tortilla and add sauce. Heat about 5 adding sauce to the top of each and put on top of each other on the plate then stop. Use a large baking pan. Add hamburger, cheese, and onion (your choice) to the top of one tortilla. Roll and place in baking pan.

Variations: favorite) (for those health conscience!)
