GARLAND – The Round Top-Carmine Cubettes added an exciting chapter to one of Texas’ great volleyball dynasties as they won the program’s sixth state title Thursday. Only nine schools have won more state volleyball titles than RTC, and only three have more made state tournament appearances than the Cubettes’ 19 berths.

The senior-laden Cubettes (which included four starters who were sophomores on the 2013 state title team) mowed down Kopperl 25-12, 25-18, 2522 Thursday for the title. “I’m super happy, but, wow, this was my last game ever,” said RTC senior Brittany Hohlt. “I’m 10 times happier (now compared to the 2013 title) because we’re seniors.” It was a title the Cubettes said they always expected.

Round Top-Carmine fans hold up signs of support at the state title match in Garland.

For their new coach, it took a little convincing. “The first day I signed my contract in May, I got a text (from a player) asking if I had booked hotel rooms for state yet,” said RTC head coach RaChelle Etzel, who herself won a state title as an RTC player in 2003. “I’ve always tried to humble them. I was like ‘one game at a time,’ but I knew we had a shot if we committed to it.” That confidence, and experience of the RTC athletes played a big factor in the title match. “We have a youthful team, and I think it showed a little bit,” Kopperl coach Trava Smith said. “We watched (RTC) in their

match against Fort Davis yesterday, and I think we were a little starstruck by some of the senior leadership and how smart Round Top-Carmine played.” The Cubettes swept Fort Davis in the state semis Wednesday to set the stage for the battle with Kopperl Thursday.

After the win over Fort Davis, a reporter joked that Coach Etzel didn’t seem too happy about the win. “I’ll smile tomorrow,” Etzel said. She made good on her promise, and the Cubettes gave her plenty to smile about in that title

match. “We finally got some emotion out of her,” Hohlt laughed. Kopperl scored the very first point of the very first set of the title match, but that would be the Lady Eagles’ one and only lead of the entire championship. See Cubettes, next page

Cubettes are Dominant in Hohlt Named Title Game MVP Winning State Title Match By JEFF WICK

The Fayette County Record

GARLAND – Senior Brittany Hohlt capped a historic career at Round Top-Carmine by being named the 1A state title game Most Valuable Player. Hohlt seemed surprised when her name was announced as the MVP after the title match – but she shouldn’t have been. She had a match-high 22 kills to go along with a teamhigh 16 digs in the championship sweep of Kopperl. Hohlt said the team title was much more satisfying than the individual honor, however. “This medal means more to me than winning the MVP. We played together,” Hohlt said. “We are a family completely. We are together a lot of the time. I am so excited I got the MVP but playing with them was the most exciting part.” Hohlt also led the Cubettes in kills with 15 in the state semifinal victory over Fort Davis.

Continued from front The Cubettes were led by Hohlt, who had team highs in kills (22) and digs (16) in the title match. Junior Madison Krause led in assists with 24 and aces with three. Seniors Emma Leppard and Adyson Lange had 11 and 12 digs respectively, and senior Jordan Peters added five kills. “Hohlt was very hard to deal with,” Smith said. “We couldn’t get our block up quick enough.” Meanwhile, the Cubettes did a strong job of neutralizing Kopperl’s big threat – freshman Logan Smith, who at 5-11, was the tallest player in the entire 1A state tournament. Logan Smith had half her team’s kills (16) in their semifinal win over North Zulch, but RTC limited her to just 12 kills Thursday in 41 attempts. “She got blocked several times in the first set, and she kept looking at me, ‘Where do I hit? What’s open?’” Trava Smith said. The Cubettes weren’t leaving much open. “We didn’t play super great defense coming into the tournament,” Etzel said. “But we really stepped it up here.” And it led to a golden afternoon, for a team, and a community, that is no stranger to championships. 11/19/15 – 1A state title match

These type of MVPs are a family affair for the Hohlts. Brittany’s older sister Megan was the title game MVP as a freshman and a senior when the Cubettes won it all in 2010 and 2013.

“She was a great player. When we came to the state tournament it wasn’t a surprise when she won it her freshman year and her senior year. I didn’t expect to win it but it is a great feeling,” Brittany said.

Etzel’s Return to RTC Helps Write Exciting New Chapter For Her & Cubettes By JEFF WICK

The Fayette County Record

GARLAND – What a first year it was for new Round TopCarmine volleyball coach RaChelle Etzel. Hired in May, Etzel led the Cubettes to Thursday’s 1A state volleyball title, but it wasn’t her first state title at RTC. She was a star player on the Cubettes 2003 state title team as a senior – after she and her RTC teammates had finished as state runner-ups her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. Etzel (who was a former RTC valedictorian, and her parents were longtime teachers at the school) said winning a state title as a player was easier than winning one as a coach. “I don’t remember being this nervous as a player,” Etzel said. “As a coach you are always thinking could I have been prepared more? As a player you are not worrying about all that. As a coach it’s lots of late hours scouting but it was well worth it.” Thursday’s state volleyball title was RTC’s sixth ever, but it was the first without Tanya Nygrin at the helm.

Nygrin retired two years ago as one of the winningest coaches in state history, but she was there in person to cheer the Cubettes on last week, and her impact on the 2015 Cubettes still loomed large. “We have her to thank for a lot of things,” Etzel said. As a former player of Nygrin’s, Etzel said her coaching style was greatly influenced by Nygrin, but with a few tweaks. “You can definetely see glimpses of Coach Nygrin, but she is her own great coach,” said RTC senior Adyson Lange “It’s still RTC volleyball but Coach Etzel brings a whole new style to it too,” said senior Emma Leppard. “We focus on some different things we didn’t when I was in school,” Etzel said. “But Coach Nygrin knew how to motivate her players and I try to follow the same kind of guidelines. She was steady and consistent and level-headed when she needed to be but then she also knew when we needed a fire lit under neath us. “That’s what I try to be for these girls,” she added.

After Bumpy Start, Cubettes Rolled Past Tough Opponents On Way to State Title By JEFF WICK

The Fayette County Record

At one point early in the season the Round Top-Carmine volleyball team’s record was just 1-5. And that one win was over the RTC alumni team! But the Cubettes players and new RTC head coach RaChelle Etzel knew the quality of their team – and that sometimes nondistrict losses are just as valuable as wins (especially considering those early losses came against a 3A state champ and a pair of 4As, one of which went to state and another that was a regional semifinalist). Those early struggles eventually turned into easy victories as the Cubettes started playing teams their own size in district. RTC swept all 12 of their district games and then it was on to the playoffs where the Cubettes didn’t even lose a single set. Here’s a look at that postseason run, with some of it clipped from the pages of the Fayette County Record as it was happening ...

Cubettes Roll Past Comstock

The RTC Cubettes rolled past Comstock in three sets Friday in San Antonio to win their 1A area round playoff match. Brittany Hohlt had a teamhigh 11 kills and Krause had 10 aces and 22 digs. The Cubettes now advance to play Medina, which eliminated Fayetteville Friday in four sets.

RTC Sweeps Medina

The Round Top-Carmine Cubettes punched their ticket to the 1A volleyball regional semifinals with a dominating 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 victory over Medina Tuesday night. The Cubettes next face McMullen County at 4 p.m. Friday at Brenham High School. If RTC can win that match they would play for the regional title, and a state berth, Saturday at 11 a.m. back in Brenham. Tuesday, RTC was led by Brittany Hohlt, who had 18 kills, Madison Krause, who had 20 assists and Adyson Lange, who had 22 digs.

State-Bound!

BRENHAM – The Round Top-Carmine Cubettes volleyball team earned their amazing 19th trip to the state volleyball tournament Saturday by sweeping Burton in the regional finals. But this state berth is like no other. The first 18 came with coaching legend Tanya Nygrin leading the way – but she retired two years ago. Saturday Nygrin was up in the stands cheering as her former player RaChelle Etzel, a first-year RTC coach, led the Cubettes to the regional title. “Being back in Carmine is kind of indescribable,” said Etzel, who was the 2004 valedictorian at the school. “Our community is second to none. We have the best fans, the best parents. Both of my parents taught there for over 30 years, my dad for 40. “Being back and being a part of it on the other side is amazing. These girls work so hard and the community does nothing but support them 100-percent. “To do this for them is huge.” While the coach may be new, the way the Cubettes won Saturday – and in fact all year – is not. They just out-work everyone – and that scrappiness really showed Saturday when RTC got down early to Burton 11-6 in the first set but fought back. The Cubettes rallied from a 16-11 deficit in the third set to win. “We are so confident in one another, and work so well together,” said RTC setter Madison Krause, a junior who was a freshman role player when the Cubettes last won state in 2013. Saturday RTC swept Burton 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 with Brittany Hohlt leading the way with 12 kills. Jordan Peters and Emma Leppard each had five kills. Krause had a team-high 13 assists and Delaney Hirsch led in digs with seven. Saturday’s victory came on the heels of RTC’s dominating 25-20, 25-13, 25-8 victory Friday night in the regional semifinals over McMullen County. RTC, with their 30-9 overall record now turns its attention to state semifinal opponent Fort Davis (33-11), which the Cubettes will play Wednesday at 3 p.m. Etzel knows a thing or two about success at the state tournament. From her playing days at RTC she owns three state silver medals from runner-up finishes,

All the state tournament matches are now at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. That’s a venue RTC senior Brittany Hohlt knows well. She was a freshman starter on the Cubettes 2012 state runner-up team there and returned to Garland her sophomore year to help RTC win it all. “We’ve felt this feeling before of going to state but now doing it as a senior I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” Hohlt said. “We go in confident, but knowing anyone can have a great day and beat us, so we’re going to leave everything out on the floor.” 11/13/15 – 1A Volleyball Regional Semifinal

Davis in their state semifinal match Wednesday in Garland, winning 25-20, 25-12, 25-15. That victory vaulted the Cubettes into Thursday’s 1A state title match at 1 p.m. against Kopperl, which swept North Zulch in Wednesday’s other semifinal. Kopperl (35-11) has never won a state volleyball title while RTC (32-9) is trying for its sixth crown, a mark only 10 others schools in the state have reached. The Cubettes won their fifth state title in 2013 when the seniors on this year’s team were sophomores. “It’s a world of difference now,” said RTC senior Emma Leppard, comparing that 2013 run to the state title to this year’s quest. “Being a senior, everything is 10 times more emotional.” First year RTC head Coach RaChelle Etzel (herself a former state champion volleyball player for the Cubettes) said channeling that emotion is key. “The girls will tell you I

don’t show a lot of emotion, because I tell them all the time that emotion doesn’t win games. Execution does,” Etzel said. RTC executed very well Wednesday. Senior Brittany Hohlt was a force at the net for the Cubettes with 15 kills and added five aces and 10 digs. Leppard had 10 kills. Junior Delaney Hirsch led in digs with 16 and junior Madison Krause had a teamhigh 15 assists. Jordan Peters added 12 digs. “They had a lot of firepower,” Fort Davis head coach Gary Lamar said. “If I were to sit up here and talk about anything else other than their firepower, I’d either be blind or an idiot. They had six quality hitters, two fabulous setters, just a great team. They wore us down in the end.” RTC also served tough, forcing Fort Davis into 12 serve-receive errors, compared to just two for the Cubettes. But things didn’t start out well for RTC.

The Cubettes actually trailed by as many as five points in the first set, but down 14-9 RTC fought back. RTC would take the lead for good at 21-20 with a kill by Emma Leppard. The Cubettes would never trail, at all, for the rest of the match. “I wasn’t worried,” Etzel said of that early deficit. “At the regional tournament we were down by as much as six. We know we just have to fight for every point.” Etzel said that would be the game-plan again in the state title match – a fight for every point. 11/18/15
