SPLOST spending updates available online Fayette County voters in 2017 approved a six-year, one-penny sales tax, formally called a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, to fund many county and municipal government projects. Conservative estimates showed that more than $141 million would be raised countywide through 2023, with the City of Fayetteville’s distribution being more than $21 million. Accommodating the possibility of higher collections over the six years, the City of Fayetteville built a $25 million SPLOST Projects list. As of the end of February 2019, the City of Fayetteville has already spent just shy of $5 million, representing expenditures across almost all of the recommended

project categories. The single largest expenditure, more than $2.5 million, took place when the City purchased from the Fayette County Board of Education its 10acre property fronting Stonewall Avenue (Hwy. 54 eastbound). An eight-acre portion of that land will be used as park and community space, and that portion was purchased with SPLOST funds. About $1.1 million so far has been spent on fire safety equipment and vehicles, almost $240,000 has been spent on police safety vehicles and equipment, and about $56,000 has been put toward a multiphase, city street repaving project. Police beards busted back
Fayetteville Police officers made donations to Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s cancer wing for the privilege of sporting a full beard from November through February. Those beards were busted back on Feb. 28 at J. Sam’s Barber Shop.
Allstate opens new office in Fayetteville
The Fayette County High School Tigers Basketball Team earned a shot at the state championship title on March 8 versus Buford but unfortunately came up second. They were sent off that Friday by salutes from the Fayetteville fire and police departments.
Insurance industry veteran and Fayette resident Shayrika Chenault opened her first Allstate office on Grady Avenue in January and celebrated with a Fayette Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting on March 15. Welcome home, Mrs. Chenault!

Main Street Fayetteville publishes 2019 Calendar of Events More than 30 events have been inked into Main Street Fayetteville’s 2019 Calendar of Events, and now the official brochure is available for download from the City’s website. This year’s calendar kicks off April 13 with “Living History Day” at the Holliday Dorsey Fife Museum, it concludes with the Dec. 7 Christmas parade and tree lighting, and it includes concerts, festivals and more along the way. “We’re excited to introduce Friday Night LIVE to this year’s lineup,” said Main Street
Program Manager Joyce Waits. “We’re planning four of these themed parties on the Old Courthouse Lawn, with the first scheduled for April 26. We will announce more details in the next couple of weeks.” The popular Lunch on the Lawn events are back this year, as is Taste of Fayette, Church Street Park Festival, Suds on the Square, The Great Pumpkin Festival and the annual Cemetery Walk. Concerts and movie nights are scattered throughout the year.
Taste of Fayette 2018 was held on the lawn of the Old Fayette County Courthouse, and it was a great success. Taste of Fayette is one of several events returning to the Main Street Fayetteville calendar for 2019.
City council meeting documents available on the City’s website Since December, Fayetteville City Council meetings, which are scheduled on the first and third Thursdays of each month, have been recorded and broadcast on Facebook LIVE. Meetings begin at 6 p.m., and Facebook viewers can post comments throughout the broadcast. During city council meetings, the mayor and city council members follow a printed agenda, which is generally published online nearly a week in advance. Along with those agendas are information packets that give details on each agenda item. All of these documents are available for the public to download at fayetteville-ga.gov/government/currentagendas-minutes/. Members of the public attending city council meetings in person at Fayetteville City Hall may pick up paper copies of the agenda inside the Council Chambers. Information packet materials are usually presented on the projector screen.

HOW CAN THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE ATTRACT A YOUNGER WORKFORCE? Call them ‘Millenials’, call them ‘young adults’. Just don’t call them ‘the participation trophy generation’. While employers all across the nation are trying to figure out the younger workforce, many of these young professionals are figuring out how to make their mark on a city they love to call ‘home’.

As Georgia’s economy continues to grow, business and government leaders now more than ever are working hard to attract and retain talented, young workers. Some call them “Millennials”, but Tommy Ruth of Malt Maker Media says they’d rather be called young professionals. Much of the state’s economic development opportunity is reflected in the City of Fayetteville and the wider Fayette County area, which is why city officials are working closely with the business community to ensure young professionals are carefully considered in future planning. This is not at the exclusion of other generations, they are quick to note. They say many of the things Millennials seek for the City’s future line up with Baby Boomer wish lists, too. Ruth is one of many young professionals who have already made a name for themselves in the local business community. One of the founders of Fayetteville-based Malt Maker Media, Ruth says a key to attracting more of his generation will be providing social gathering environments. “We are more connected technologically than ever before, but what we really crave is human-to-human connection,” Ruth says. He points to Atlanta’s Beltline development with its variety of restaurants, bars and other attractions as an example of a successful planning model. Glenn Gresham, who started Gremlin Growlers in 2012 and brought it to the Courthouse Square in 2016, says it was Fayetteville leaders’ plans for the future
that attracted him and his business. “We saw great potential for the Square, and after talking with the City and hearing their vision... we knew we needed to be a part of it,” says Gresham. Voices of young professionals like Ruth’s and Greshham’s are particularly influential in formulating the City’s Downtown Redevelopment Plan, which is a front-burner project for City Manager Ray Gibson and Downtown Development Director Brian Wismer. Wismer says Baby Boomers, Millennials and others in between have basically told the City they want a walkable place to call home with opportunities to create community in a social environment. “The City is working with the private sector to build these new housing opportunities and special places that people can gather and enjoy a high quality of life in our downtown,” Wismer continues, noting that the Fayetteville Downtown Development Authority plays a key role. “Our DDA seeks opportunities to encourage and foster small business and local entrepreneurship where possible,” says Wismer. Jennifer Jordan, who grew up in Fayetteville, and her Douglasville native husband Brandon are 30-something owners of Arch Advisory Group, which was based in Atlanta before they had the opportunity to relocate their office to nearby Tyrone. Jordan said she wanted to stay close to her roots. As a young financial advisor, she says she would like to see a

“more walkable city center with healthy and unique restaurant offerings that are conducive for business meetings, lunches and gatherings. “Being local and relatable helps to give our clients personal service being in Atlanta could not provide,” Jordan says. Wismer says the City is on track to encourage more of this entrepreneurial spirit. “The DDA has facilitated many projects over the years that have helped downtown businesses in their startup and growth phases,” says Wismer. “Going forward, the City hopes to escalate that effort with a business incubator that would provide space for new businesses to grow in an affordable and creative environment.” Perched with its headquarters on the western edge of the Fayetteville Downtown District, the Fayette Chamber of Commerce is also both-feet into the game of fostering entrepreneurship. It’s Young Professionals group, currently led by Ruth, has garnered praise over the years by offering a peer network as well as mentoring opportunities. The Chamber’s relatively new StartUp Fayette program takes things a step further by offering entrepreneurs of any age a focused program that offers support to these business risk-takers. “We hope that this multi-layered approach will promote the long-term sustainability Fayetteville needs to stay relevant to future generations,” says Wismer.

Construction in the Community Development updates from around Fayetteville 1. The Hearthside residential complex is nearing completion, with interior and landscape work taking place and a grand opening expected late spring or early summer. 2. That construction site next to Krystal is a new Del Taco due to open later this year. 3. The new Holiday Inn has gone vertical and is expected to open Jan. 2020. 4. The three- to four-story Pinewood Forest mixed-use building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020. 5. Phase 1 of the Pinewood Forest residential section is well underway, with approximately 50 homes completed and permits issued for 80. 6. The foundation has been poured for Georgia Military College’s campus expansion. 7. Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s new Wellness Center at Pinewood Forest is moving along nicely, with a grand opening expected in Dec. 2019.
