CITY HALL EXTERIOR NEARING COMPLETION & CITY CENTER PARK PROGRESSING SWIFTLY
October 2020 marks one year since ground was ceremonially broken for the new Fayetteville City Hall & City Center Park, and Project Coordinator Steve Mauro says exterior work on the new City Hall building is nearing completion, and significant progress is being made at the adjacent City Center Park. Over the last few weeks, roof work on the City Hall building was completed, allowing builders to continue with interior construction regardless of the weather. “It’s what we call ‘dried in,’” Mauro said. Inside, Mauro said about 80 percent of the major mechanical and plumbing systems are complete. He said about 70 percent of the drywall work has also been completed. Outside at City Center Park, renovation planning is still underway for the Gym and Bus Barn projects, but the nearby
bathroom building, which will serve the entire park space, is well under construction. Mauro noted that all of the major underground infrastructure, including the stormwater system, is completed across the site, and most of the work is complete on the roadways, curbs, and gutters. While the site is still under construction, they are operating on a base layer of asphalt for the roadways, which will be top-coated closer to the completion of the 4 - October 2020
project. “We have been taking advantage of the recent dry weather to make a lot of progress in the park, including the stormwater pond,” Mauro said. In the coming weeks and months, progress will continue on park features such as the four pavilions, a concrete water flume leading to an interactive splash pad, a playground, and a tot lot. Other amenities are being planned for the park space as well.
FAYETTEVILLE CITY COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGE NAILAH GRANT MCFARLANE
The Fayetteville City Council recently welcomed the new Municipal Court Chief Judge Nailah Grant McFarlane and thanked outgoing Judge Rhonda Kreuziger for her years of service. Pictured (l-r) are Council members Paul Oddo and Joe Clark, Mayor Ed Johnson, Councilman Darryl Langford, Judge McFarlane, Councilman Scott Stacy, Judge Kreuziger, and Councilman Rich Hoffman.
POLICE DEPARTMENT AWARDED GRANT FROM GOVERNOR’S OFFICE The Fayetteville Police Department is pleased to announce it has received a $52,593.60 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). This grant award was based on the department’s partnership with GOHS in helping to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities across the State of Georgia. “The loss of one life on our roads is one too many, and the fact almost all fatal traffic crashes can be prevented is one reason why we are awarding this grant,” GOHS Director Allen Poole said. “The target of zero traffic deaths in our nation is achievable, and we will continue to help develop and implement educational messages and enforcement campaigns aimed at
bringing our state one step closer to that goal.” “The Fayetteville Police Department is proud of its continued partnership with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety,” said Fayetteville Police Chief Scott Gray. “Through this grant, we will be able to equip additional officers with the needed tools to promote the wellbeing of motorists traveling on the roadways of Fayetteville. Our ultimate goal is to enhance highway safety by reducing the number of collisions, speeding motorists, distracted drivers, and impaired drivers within our community.” As law enforcement partners in the Operation Zero Tolerance DUI and 5 - October 2020
Click It or Ticket seatbelt campaigns, the Fayetteville Police Department will also conduct mobilizations throughout the year in coordination with GOHS’s year-round waves of high visibility patrols and multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoints. The grant will continue through September 2021.
REMOTE CAMERAS CAN SE CITY USES LATEST TECHNOLOGY
Two new remote camera systems are revolutionizing how the City of Fayetteville maintains its sanitary sewer system, saving stakeholders money and making repairs more precise and tidy. Hidden beneath Fayetteville’s busy business districts and tranquil neighborhoods lies some of the City’s most important
infrastructure. While many people may never think about the sanitary sewer system, Fayetteville’s Water & Sewer Department personnel look after it every day. Weekly tasks include servicing the 26 lift stations and 130 miles of sanitary sewer lines that lead from homes and businesses back to the City’s central Wastewater Treatment Plant, which must also be diligently maintained. Some of the most difficult tasks in maintaining the sewer system involve clearing blockages and defending the pipes against encroaching tree roots, but the City’s two new remote camera systems have become great tools to help discover and remedy these problems. “They make the job easier. You can see what you’re working with,” said Heavy Equipment Operator Tim Bolton. “We’re not working blind.” Bolton, who has worked 12 years for the City of Fayetteville, says things were different a decade ago. Crews would have to spend more 6 -October 2020
time down manholes to fix problems in the main sanitary sewer lines, and they had to dig up more rightof-way land to find trouble spots in the residential service lines. The City for the past few years has used a trailer-based, remotecontrolled camera on wheels to crawl into the main sanitary sewer lines. An upgrade to the Trio Vision MK3 happened about two years ago. Within the last year or so, the City added a smaller, more portable system, the Rigid SeeSnake with a SeekTech SR-24 locator, to inspect the four- and six-inch service lines. Using precise coordinates, workers can dig straight to the problem, making for quicker repairs and less cleanup required. Most weeks, the City’s sanitary sewer system brings more than two million gallons of wastewater to the treatment plant each day, which has a daily capacity of five million gallons. The plant is currently being upgraded to deliver more energy efficiency and sustainability while maintaining that five million gallons-per-day capacity.
