Mayor Ed Johnson cuts the ribbon

City cuts ribbon on upgraded Whitewater Creek Water Pollution Control Plant City leaders, staff and contractors cut the ribbon August 9 on the upgraded Whitewater Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. It is now expected to continue providing well into the future a daily capacity of five million treated gallons of wastewater. Currently, the City treats about half of that capacity on the average day. The extra capacity ensures the City has room to grow. Public Services Director Chris

Hindman noted that $19 million was budgeted for the upgrade, but the project was completed for about $2 million less. “I think the citizens would be extremely proud of how we spent their money,” said Mayor Ed Johnson. “We’re extremely proud.” “Nothing great can happen development-wise in the City of Fayetteville unless we have a wastewater treatment plant that operates efficiently and effectively,”

City Manager Ray Gibson addresses the audience 3 - August 2021

said City Manager Ray Gibson. “So this is exciting.” The City ceremonially broke ground on the upgrade project in August 2019, with construction beginning later that year. Goodwyn Mills Cawood was the architectural firm on the project, and Reeves + Young was the general contractor. Clearwater Solutions was hired earlier this year to manage the plant operations for the City.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT FAYETTE COUNTY 9-11 TRIBUTE EVENT

The 2020 Fayette County 9-11 Tribute was held at Brightmoor Southern Ground Amphitheater. This year’s event will be held at the new City Center Park Great Lawn behind the new City Hall. The second-annual Fayette County 9-11 Tribute event planned for September 11 at Fayetteville’s City Center Park will incorporate several health and safety measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The free event, which will honor first responders and the lives lost on September 11, 2001, will be held on the Great Lawn of City Center Park, and guests will be encouraged

to use social distancing. Guests will provide their own lawn chairs, and they will be encouraged to wear face coverings. Several hand-sanitizing stations will be available at the event. The 2021 Fayette County 9-11 Tribute will begin at 6 p.m. on the lawn at City Center Park. The ceremony will again include special music, speeches, a helicopter flyover, and other performances to cutline

honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The program will be followed after sunset with a free screening of the family film “Playing with Fire” (Rated PG). Static public safety displays and food trucks will be on site. For sponsorship information, contact Mayor Ed Johnson: ejohnson@fayetteville-ga.gov. HEADLINE THE DOTTIE, BUS BARN, AND WALTON COMMUNITIES COMING ONLINE ADJACENT TO CITY HALL & CITY CENTER PARK story

Fayetteville’s new City Hall & City Center Park officially opened to the public in July, and now an upscale event center, restaurants, a brewery and more are coming online adjacent to the park. A ribbon cutting ceremony for The Dottie, an event center occupying what used to be the Fayette County High School gym 50 years ago, will take place on Thursday, August 26, at noon. Roundtown, which operates the facility, has already been booking events for this summer and beyond. Coming next will be Line Creek Brewery and several other food and drink establishments, which are located in the building once used as the Fayette County Public Schools bus barn. The building is still being called ”The Bus Barn.” 7 - July 2021

Together with The Dottie and a biergarten between them, this food and entertainment complex is known as Triumph Station, and all of it is expected to be open later this year. By next year, development of Walton Communities should be coming online on the south side of City Center Park. Clearing and grading of the property began early this summer, and City planners expect to see building foundations being poured later this year. When the first phase is complete, there will be ground-floor shops and restaurants facing the park, with upper-floor residential housing built on top of them. Updates on all of these projects will be features in future editions of City News as well as the City’s website and social media pages.
