Police to enforce Bus Safety Law

The Georgia General Assembly updated the School Bus Safety Law (O.C.G.A. 40-6-163) during the 2019 Legislative Session to maximize safety for students and to clarify existing laws for motorists. Motorist should become familiar with this law to ensure safety for everyone throughout the school year. Sharing the Road In most cases, all drivers are required to stop when meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended when loading or unloading passengers. The only exception to this rule is when highways are separated in the center by a dirt, grass or concrete median. In this situation, only vehicles following or traveling alongside a school bus in the same direction must stop. A warning that a bus stop is about to take place will always

be given with the flashing amber lights on the front and rear of the school bus. Upon seeing these flashing amber lights, vehicles approaching the school bus from both the front and rear should immediately slow down and prepare to stop. All drivers must pay special attention to children, be focused and exercise caution when in the vicinity of a school bus stop, as student riders can sometimes be unpredictable. Once the bus is fully stopped, the flashing red lights will activate and the stop arm will deploy. Vehicles must stop and should remain stopped until all loading students are aboard in the morning or all unloading passengers have cleared 12 feet off the roadway in the afternoon. Motorists should proceed with caution, only after passengers have cleared the roadway, the stop arm is cancelled and the flashing red lights are deactivated. Tips for Motorists

4 - August 2019

Please be alert and exercise patience and caution, especially around children as they wait at school bus stops and as they load and unload school buses. Impatient, uninformed or apathetic drivers pose a great threat. Follow these safety practices: • Be on the alert as children walk to and from their school bus stop. • Exercise care and be responsive as children congregate and wait at their bus stop. They may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely. • Be ready to act when you see the yellow flashing lights on the front and the rear of a school bus. This is your warning that a bus stop is about to take place. Begin to slow down and look for students in the area. • NEVER speed up to beat a school bus. You must

be focused and exercise caution any time you are in the vicinity of a school bus stop, as student riders can sometimes be impulsive. Abide by the law when a school bus comes to a full stop and you see the flashing red lights activate and the stop arm deploy. Motorists are required to STOP in nearly every instance. The only exception to this rule is when highways are separated in the center by a dirt, grass or concrete median. In this situation, only vehicles following or traveling alongside a school bus in the same direction must stop. Be attentive after stopping. You must remain stopped

until all loading students are aboard in the morning or all unloading students have cleared 12 feet off the roadway in the afternoon. Avoid distractions such as texting or talking on the cell phone. If distracted, you threaten everyone’s safety. Analyze what is happening at and around the bus. Carefully observe student actions, look for stragglers and expect the unexpected. Respond appropriately and defensively to the situation. A school bus means children, and children equal unpredictability. Proceed with caution only after all students have safely cleared the roadway, the stop arm is cancelled and 5 - August 2019

the flashing red lights are deactivated. Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, paying extra attention to the lower speed limits in school zones. Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at crosswalks. Do not change lanes or make U-turns in school zones. Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards. Be alert and watch for children near schools and in school parking lots. Drive or park only in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school.

Firefighters experience Virtual Dementia Tour Helping people who have forms of dementia can be challenging in the best of circumstances, and it can be even more challenging during emergencies, especially if first responders are unfamiliar with the challenges dementia sufferers are facing themselves. Brightmoor Hospice staffers recently took an entire morning to train Fayetteville Fire Fighters to not only identify the signs of dementia but also to understand how a dementia sufferer thinks and responds to everyday tasks and challenges. They call it the Virtual Dementia Tour, and firefighters said it opened their eyes even more to what these members of the community are going through. Outfitted wtih special glasses, gloves and hearing limiters, participants are guided through several

everyday activities to give them insights on what it would be like to do these things while struggling with dementia. Based in nearby Griffin, Brightmoor Hospice launched its Virtual Demential Tour earlier this year. The recent training session at the Fayetteville Fire Department Headquarters was the company’s first-ever with public safety personnel. “We are grateful they offered this training to us,” said Fire Department Division Chief Keith Harris. “The session went well. It deepened our personnel’s understanding of empathetically working with people who have dementia. Brightmoor Hospice will offer another Virtual Dementia Tour at Heartis Living in Fayetteville on Thursday, Sept. 19. Call 770-461-2555 for more information. Virtual Dementia Tour participants were tasked with completing everyday activities while restricted to limited senses of touch, hearing and vision. They were debriefed at the conclusion of the session.

The Fayette County Public Library’s Picture Book Trail is still happening at The Ridge Nature Area. The trailhead is adjacent to the picnic area, just off the main road. These spider lilies (inset) were in bloom just a few hundred feet off the bottom of this trail. Many people have asked, “When is the new Del Taco opening?” All being well, they will open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, according to management. In the meantime, personnel are being trained on site.

City SROs make a difference at Fayette Schools The 2019-2020 school year has begun, and the Fayetteville Police Department’s school resource officers have joined their administrative teams at Fayette County High School, Bennett’s Mill Middle School and Fayette County Alternative School. In addition to providing security for these campuses, SROs engage with staff and students to help in other ways, including counseling and making sure they feel safe and at ease within the school environment. “The SROs have a great working relationship with the schools,” says Captain Chad Myers, who supervises the School Resource Officer program. “They go and eat lunch with the kids, so the kids get to see them in that light, which may make them more approachable than officers out in the streets,” Myers said. “Every time I’ve toured the schools with the SROs, the kids are giving them fist bumps and interacting with them. They seem to be well received.”

Museum intern returns, sets up new exhibit 1800s medical tools now on display in the room where Dr. Holliday worked Holliday Dorsey Fife Museum intern Sabrina Barlow, who made her debut on Fayetteville’s historic preservation scene last year, returned to her post at the museum in June after graduating with history and politics degrees from Hillsdale College in Michigan. Working alongside museum managers Thomas Lee and Nicole Gilbert, Barlow again this summer has been busy helping the museum improve its guest experience in several ways, including the launch of a brand-new medical tools exhibit. “The significance is that Dr. John Stiles Holliday, the man who built this house, would have used the implements that are in the apothecary case to create pills and prescriptions for his patients,” Barlow said. And what about the other case with the amputation devices and other painfullooking equipment? “Holliday served a six-month stint in the Confederate Army as a doctor,” Barlow said. Gilbert noted that Holliday seems to have retired from the medical profession around the time the War Between the States ended. “He had probably seen too much,” Gilbert said. “It would have been like being a physician for two lifetimes, or maybe more.” Most of the medical tools currently included in the exhibit are on a one-year loan from the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. Gilbert says they hope to expand the exhibit and make it a permanent feature of the museum. Learn more about the Holliday Dorsey Fife Museum by visiting www. hdfhouse.com. Museum Manager Nicole Gilbert (left) and intern Sabrina Barlow welcome guests to visit the new and growing medical tools exhibit located in the front parlor where Dr. John Stiles Holliday practiced his trade in the mid-1800s. 14 - August 2019

August 16-17 will be a trip back in time in Fayetteville The final Main Street Fayetteville Friday Night LIVE event for 2019 is coming up Aug. 16, and it will be a blast from the past as guests enjoy music, games and activities from the 1970s, 80s and 90s while dressed up in costumes from those eras. The live band Phil and The Blanks kicks off “Flashback Friday” at 6 p.m. by covering the throwback classics while the Rick’s Ribs food truck plates up delicious ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken and brisket. Kid-friendly inflatables, face painting and sand art will be a highlight of the evening, and they are offered free of charge. A retro photo booth, oldschool games and other activities will also be free. Rounding out the event will be more than 20 retail vendors from around the community. As a bonus for our downtown guests that Friday evening, Courthouse Square retailers Betty’s Collectibles and Uniquely Gifted will both stay open until 10 p.m., and Tribal Chick will stay open until 7. Friday Night LIVE runs 6-10. “We have enjoyed our new Friday Night LIVE series, and we look forward to this Aug. 16 finale for 2019,” said Main Street Program Manager Joyce Waits. “Having the retro theme will be extra fun. I can’t wait to see how people dress up for the evening.” Guests taking selfies are invited to share them on social media using #FridayNightLIVE. The fun continues the next night at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Amphitheater as Purple Madness performs a live Prince tribute.
