September 11 Stone Mountain climb is a fourth-year Public Safety tradition Twenty-one City of Fayetteville fire and police officers were joined by fifteen other Metro-Atlanta public safety personnel to complete their annual 9/11 Honor Climb up Stone Mountain on Tuesday, September 11. The department tradition was started in 2015 by Fayetteville firefighters Duncan Hervey, Keith Harris, Russell Reed, and Ben Henning. Walking up the mountain together in full-turnout gear and S.C.B.A., the event symbolizes the stair climb that New York City rescuers made that day. “We wanted to do our part in remembering those responders, as well as our military that have lost their lives preventing further attacks” said Division Chief Keith Harris, one of the original four. “We love that we’re now joined by so many other brothers and sisters who also want to pay tribute.” Eighteen fire and police officers made the hike in 2016. Last year, Tropical Storm Irma weather delayed the climb and only about a half-dozen made the trek. Fayetteville firefighters Ben Henning, Keith Harris, Russell Reed, and Duncan Hervey (top) climbed Stone Mountain on Sept. 11, 2015. Pictured at left is the group of 18 police and fire officers who made the climb in 2016, and at above is the crew from 2017, who had to reschedule due to storms on Sept. 11 of that year. Pictures of the 2018 climb are on the cover of this BiWeekly Report.

Hwy. 54 Repaving Update: Main travel lanes are almost complete Much of the recent Hwy. 54 repaving work has taken place in Peachtree City and western Fayette County, but Georgia Department of Transportation District 3 officials say overnight crews will soon return to Fayetteville. They further indicated that, weather permitting, all of the repaving work should be completed by the end of September. The 12.5-mile project, which stretches from the Coweta County line on Fayette County’s west side to a point east of the McDonough Road intersection, was originally forecasted to be complete by the end of August, but an unusally rainy spring and summer thwarted those plans. Other setbacks included having to mill deeper on portions of the highway because of damaged foundation material, and

discovery of collapsed stormwater pipes running under the highway in Fayetteville. GDOT officials say those infrastructure repairs are now complete, and the final phase of repaving has resumed. Crews have repaved all of the main travel lanes except for the span of westbound lanes stretching from the eastern border of the project to North Jeff Davis Drive. The asphalt topping for this section was delayed to allow for the stormwater pipe repairs, but that repaving work should begin this week, say GDOT officials. What’s left otherwise is to pour the asphalt topping on remaining turn lanes and intersections, then restriping everything. Another crew has begun re-installing the loop timing systems for trafficlighted intersections that have already been completely repaved. While the City welcomes comments and questions on the Hwy. 54 repaving project, the public is being reminded that this is a state project. Communications with the City on the project are

forwarded to GDOT. During all of this repaving, at least one through-lane will remain open, but expect traffic delays in the affected areas. Please drive slowly and carefully past construction zones. Visit the City’s website, www. fayetteville-ga.gov, and social media channels for updates. Anyone with questions or concerns about the project may contact the GDOT District 3 office at 706-845-4115 or by e-mailing amccart@dot.ga.gov.

Hospital entrance sidewalk improvements have begun

Sidewalk improvements have begun at the main Hwy. 54 entrance to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, and the westbound turn lane is temporarily closed. Drivers are asked to use caution in this intersection. Bi-Weekly Report - September 17, 2018

Fayetteville Public Safety respond to FCHS gas leak

On Thursday, Sept. 13, Fayetteville fire units were dispatched to Fayette County High School to investigate the report of a natural gas leak. Upon arrival, personnel found construction crews on site had struck a four-inch service line, resulting in an active gas leak near the school buildings. Fayetteville Police and Public Works crews shut down Tiger Trail while fire crews initiated air monitoring in the areas around the leak, including the high school buildings. Crews found minor accumulations of gas inside the school and assisted school officials with evacuation of all students to a safe area, starting in the areas closest to the leak. Once evacuation was complete, crews remained on scene to continue monitoring of the air levels until Atlanta Gas Light crews, with the assistance of Fayetteville Water Department personnel, were able to locate gas shut-offs to secure the flow of gas. Personnel operated on scene for approximately five hours. Bi-Weekly Report - September 17, 2018
