A beautiful Ptolemaic Female Bust in diorite. This woman is skillfully and graciously represented, with delicate traits and heavily lidded eyes. She wears a bag wig tucked behind the ears with decorations on the extremities and an elaborate necklace composed of layers of triangular segments. She is either bare breasted or wears a closely fitting dress. Following the death of Alexander the Great, his empire was divided between his three generals, each of whom set up their own kingdoms. One of them, Ptolemy, took Egypt as his share and made Alexandria his capital. Ruling as Ptolemy I Soter, he established the last dynasty to rule Egypt with the title of Pharaoh. For the next two and a half centuries, the Ptolemaic Dynasty of Greeks controlled Egypt, mingling Hellenic traditions with the mighty legacy of the Pharaohs. Dimensions given are exclusive of mounting.

Condition Report: The artefact (Ptolemaic Female Bust - ES.6767) is in very fine state. The break under the breast is clean and neat, quite probably ancient. There is a light and uniform patination on the neck, breast, and ears. No visible scratches, except for a possible one (extremely minor) on the right shoulder, which could also be a feature of the grain of the stone. The artefact has been professionally mounted.
