AL MUHARRAQ Heritage District Regeneration Framework Kingdom of Bahrain

Muharraq was the former capital of Bahrain during the rule of the Al-Khalifa Dynasty in 19th century when Muharraq served as the centre of the pearl-diving and trading industry in the Gulf, which attracted waves of immigrants including tribes from various parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Muharraq’s urban fabric went through a rapid period of change and expansion with land reclamation in the 1930s and construction of a ring road in the 70s, which resulted in the disconnection of the core of Muharraq from its waterfront. The urban fabric of Muharraq is unique with its distinctive features; low-rise and high-density neighbourhoods, a hierarchy of open spaces and courtyards, an organic form of winding roads and narrow laneways with old bazaar or marketplace (souq). “Fareej”, or neighbourhoods in Muharraq, have strong social structure and tribal identity, which were named after major tribal groups and the predominant craft practiced in each area. The Urban Planning & Development Authority (UPDA) has engaged Community Capital Limited, the commercial arm of the Prince’s Foundation, to assist in the regeneration efforts of Old Muharraq. As part of these efforts, various stakeholder consultation methods – including the Enquiry by Design (EbD) process was held on location to identify the challenges and vision and principles for the regeneration of Muharraq. These findings and proposals are presented in the Regeneration Framework Plan.

DOWNTOWN KL Historic Urban Core Urban Revitalisation Kuala Lumpur

Downtown Kuala Lumpur consists of a historic core that is largely intact with over 500 traditional shophouses and a variety of government-owned colonial and Merdeka era heritage assets. While it suffers from a loss of traditional economic functions, a poor state of conservation, negative perceptions of safety, and low patronage from locals, it has enormous potential. Buffered by large green belts with a world-class public transport system, the historic core has benefited from a government-led urban regeneration programme. As a community-focussed citymaking agency established in 2009, which aims to create more peoplefriendly and liveable cities in Malaysia, Think City KL works in close partnership with the local council in revitalising Downtown KL through several community-driven programmes such as Laneway Improvement Programme, Urban Greening Initiatives, heritage facade restoration and space activation through arts and culture. In 2018, Think City KL was also involved in the World Urban Forum 9, a global conference on sustainable urban development and human settlements, held in Kuala Lumpur. Through a series of interventions such as parklets, microhousing installation, community mural, greening of local streets and activation of urban village, the team succeeded in showcasing the potential of Kuala Lumpur as a liveable, sustainable and thriving premier city in Asia.

GEORGE TOWN UNESCO World Heritage Site Urban Regeneration Penang

Once a thriving port city, George Town in Malaysia was very much on the decline by the early 2000s with large numbers of locals leaving for the suburbs and beyond. Think City Penang spearheaded the urban regeneration of George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Partnered with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Think City focusses on the implementation of George Town Strategic Masterplan through a series of heritage conservation and public realm projects to counter the negative impacts of gentrification associated with regenerations. These projects includes the restoration of a 19th century Malay mansion, conservation programme for the Category 1 National Heritage-listed Fort Cornwallis and Dato Koyah’s tomb, upgrading of the much-loved Armenian Park as a community park, laneways upgrading and activation, public realm development of the north seafront area, and preparation of a development framework for the east waterfront precinct.

WESTWAY Public Realm Interventions London

The Westway has evolved through a series of adjustments and is a concrete monument to the adaptive city. Today, after a freefall of community action over many years, the space under the Westway is in limbo. The space contains a series of insular events and activities placed with a lack of rhythm. The Westway is in post-traumatic stress from the grandeurs of modernism. In response, the design proposition puts forward a series of spaces of intense activity and relaxation - Formality and Informality. The activities within these spaces are not defined or strictly structured as they allow for spontaneity and personal expression. Under one roof, the public spaces are brought together by the very formal structure above whilst the physical void below is reclaimed as an accessible, useable and community-driven public realm.

SOUTHALL GASWORKS Masterplan London

The Masterplan builds on the assets of the site – its proximity to the Minet Country Park and the Grand Union Canal, and the thriving multicultural community; in order to create a unique urban development. The site constraints such as accessibility, gas infrastructure and the railway line were considered as opportunities rather than restrictions. The proposal envisages a high-density, mixed-use focus to the north of the Gas Works site with a range of employment opportunities, low to medium-density housing of varied typologies to accommodate new residents of Southall, an efficient East to West connection in between the Southall Station and the rest of the development site, and the Canal as a waterway asset that ‘re-stitches’ the different urban areas together.

SOUTHWARK Site Planning + Development Appraisal London

The development proposes a core urban plaza stretching from north to the south-end of the site. This arterial public space acts as a distributor of pedestrian movement throughout the site by creating a greener, generously-sized pedestrian-only route (25m wide at north end); with high quality and well designed hard and soft surface treatments. The mix of retail, commercial, and community facilities on ground floor, flanking both sides of the plaza; provides a vibrant and pleasant experience navigating through this part of the city away from the busy high street. The plaza becomes a hub of human interactions for the local residents and visitors which aims to accommodate many community-based activities such as a local pop-up market and an outdoor cinema. The provision of a new green park and retail area on ground floor at north end of the site also aims to attract the office crowd during lunch time.

SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Landscape Works Melbourne

Swinburne University of Technology is an Australian public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. ASPECT Studios was engaged by the university to design the outdoor space of its main campus in Hawthorn. Sustainability was a key driver on the overall landscape principle with incorporation of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) treatments, a strong emphasis on recycled elements, low embodied energy and sustainable materials, and indigenous plantings. The existing sloping site provided an opportunity for interesting interplay of levels and terraced softscaping and hardscaping works.

YARRA RIVER PRECINCT BIODIVERSITY Landscape Works Melbourne

The Yarra River is a perennial river which runs through the city of Melbourne and Greater Melbourne. It flows 242 kilometres and was a major food source and meeting place for indigenous Australians from prehistoric times. Together with the City of Stonnington, ASPECT Studios undertook extensive riparian re-vegetation and biodiversity improvements along the Yarra River Precinct in order to create a natural vegetation zone. These proposals provides an opportunity to significantly improve and transform the Yarra River interface into an area of Riparian Habitat. The landscape proposals introduce recreational and educational pockets throughout the site.

ATHERFIELD GARDEN Landscape Works Sydney

Following the successful refurbishment of the 1850s Gothic revival house, Design 5 Architects was engaged to design a terraced garden stepping down the steeply sloping site overlooking the picturesque Sydney Harbour. Mini waterfalls link the various levels, which are defined by rustic stone garden walls connected by gently curving flight of stone steps. Stepping stones meander along the terraces and an 18m lap pool hugs the hillside. A large Morton Bay Fig frames the view and provides a shady canopy over the lush tropical vegetation. Above, a sunken spa surrounded by lush vegetation provides a private retreat for relaxation for the residents at the end of the day.

COBURG LAKE RESERVE Signage Melbourne

Coburg Lake has been central to the lives of the Moreland community for over a hundred years. With recent refurbishment of its facilities, ASPECT Studios was engaged to develop a family of wayfinding and gateway signage that would celebrate the lake’s rich history. The main entrance sign situated along Murray Road was inspired by the Art-Deco elements still present in the reserve which were incorporated into the palisade fence spelling out Coburg Lake Reserve.

SYDNEY MECHANICS’ SCHOOL OF ARTS Library Fitout Sydney

The Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts is the oldest operating School of Arts in Australia. Within a constraint space, budget and deadline, Design 5 Architects was engaged to design and detail a library fitout, including its joinery, to house the book collection and works of Thomas Keneally, an Australian novelist who is best known for his work, Schindler’s Ark. The overall design reflects, as much as possible, the character of Tom’s original library. The design was simple, minimal and clean but detailed in a manner to maximise shelving space and prioritise practicality. The library was offically opened on 18 August 2011.

HOTEL OF AMBIGUOUS PROXIMITY Graduation Project Sydney

A hotel is a home faraway from home. A home which is temporary and communal where familiarity is a stranger. A home where comfort is over prioritised and convenience is highly desired. The project seeks to establish the hotel as a place where one escapes from the mundane and steps out of their comfort zone. A place where inside and outside coincide, blurring the boundary between the two realms and placing the guest in charge of defining their own boundaries. Conventional functions are overlapped, compressed and expanded, encouraging the guests to become part of the play in this exaggerated environment.
