THE MESSENGER The Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church, Staunton
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)

APRIL TOGETHER . . . a long obedience in the same direction Resurrection comes as no surprise to the twentyfirst century Christian. But to the disciples, resurrection provided an impetus for discipleship which they, evidently, never anticipated. The renewed physical presence of Jesus revived them from their fear to such a degree that their courage would astound the world not long afterward. While we can never experience the historical event of the resurrection, we, too, are called to the boldness of a resurrection lifestyle. Our courage comes from the deep abiding presence of Jesus in our lives as the Holy Spirit directs us to pursue the truth and work of God. He is as much resurrected today as He was on that first resurrection morning! We are no less called to be His disciples than were those firstcentury believers! Discipleship is a twostep process. We learn what to do and then do it! It is a lifelong pursuit of becoming more like Jesus and sharing Him with the world. This year we have been intentional in the discipleship process
because we know our time is limited, and we are called to serve Christ to the fullest of our potential. Some of you are already experiencing growth and fulfillment to a degree that you may not have experienced before. Keep growing! For those who had reservations about what this process was about and where it would lead, I encourage you to step out and see what God will do in your lives as you grow in your relationship with Him. I believe you will experience relationship with God which will propel you to new heights in your understanding of God and usefulness to Him. We need what Eugene Peterson calls “resurrection wonder” and to “practice resurrection.” Let me elaborate. The process of discipleship is called spiritual formation. This term communicates that we need to have our lives “formed” so that our actions, reactions, words, and attitudes reflect those of Jesus. Let me emphasize that this is a process. It’s not an
instant fix but a lifelong pursuit. We are emphasizing this process at First Baptist with the hope that every day, month, and year we will become more like Jesus. It’s not a predictable path, but we must be persistent if we are to become the presence of Christ in this world. When we experience a taste of resurrection life we will grasp our new creation lifestyles. Eugene Petersen says it like this, After the resurrection of Jesus, nothing is the same...Christ’s friends were utterly transformed by his resurrection. Their friendship, their work, and even their meals together took on a new meaning and purpose. The same can happen to us today. When the resurrection becomes the core reality of our spiritual formation, our dimmed eyes and dulled souls are lifted to a place of continual renewal. Don’t be deceived into thinking that discipleship is only a matter of memorizing scripture and perusing the Bible for a few minutes a day to meet the requirements of a class or to check a box
on Sunday morning. Discipleship is a full-time vocation that is lived out during every moment of our lives. Also, realize that discipleship is NOT just for an elite few who preach or teach or sing or “deac” (serves as a deacon). Discipleship is for the masses. Every person who names Jesus as Lord and Savior is called to be His disciple. Jesus has placed us into this community we call the church. It’s more than meeting, singing, praying, and preaching. It’s about becoming! Church is becoming the presence of Christ in our homes, at school, on our jobs, in our neighborhoods and communities. Becoming takes discipleship, and discipleship requires resurrection. Is the resurrection life of Jesus in you? Is the marvel, wonder, amazement, and astonishment of the resurrection a part of who you are? Are you the reality of Jesus’ resurrection to those you encounter? Live! Love! Serve! Proclaim His resurrection!

COMING and GOING both now and forevermore (Ps. 121:8).
Various Classes and Ministries within First Baptist Encouraged the Men’s Courageous Living Study by Providing Lunches
Men Enjoyed Fellowshipping Together over Meals and through Bible Study Every Sunday in March
First Baptist Church is not a building tethered to a location by brick and mortar. First Baptist Church is the living, breathing Body of Christ, coming in to be filled and going out to be emptied. We are the church as we come and go for Jesus. God guides our steps as we follow Him. We come to worship, learn, pray and fellowship. We go out to serve, minister, love and help. As we go, we make disciples. Are you working on your Circle of Twelve as you come and go? Going into the world provides ample opportunities to build relationships with people who are unchurched. Reach out to people over the weeks and months ahead as we share God’s love with them. This page’s pictures illustrate just some of the ways God has directed our paths in the last few weeks. Pray that, as God leads us, we will impact lives. God will guide us to the right people at the right time — if we are sensitive and allow the Holy Spirit to direct our steps. We are to be God’s Presence as we bring flavor and light to our world. As we come and go, let us never forget that we represent Christ to our world. We have the unique responsibility to bring others closer to God as we introduce them to Jesus Christ, so that they, too, may come and go in relationship with our Father. In March, we had numerous opportunities to come to church to be prepared to go to our world. The men’s Courageous Living Bible study was encouraging and inspiring as men came together to become better husbands, fathers, and followers of Christ. These men, along with many others, went out to visit hospitals, minister to shut-ins, and share what God is doing. Get out there and let people know about Jesus! Invite others to come. Let’s fulfill God’s purpose together!

APRIL 1-7, 2012 Supplement to Growing Strong Book DESTINATION UNKNOWN
After reading 1 Kings 1:20-39 — Often the plans that seem best to men are not God’s plans. We put ourselves and our testimony in peril by moving forward without first seeking the Lord and His will. In this passage, Adonijah rushed headlong to claim the crown as his father, King David, lay on his deathbed. But the Lord had determined that Solomon would be king and would build the temple. Adonijah’s actions could have resulted in civil war and a long delay in building the temple — a disastrous scenario. Have you sought the Lord’s will concerning your life? Do you pray for unity at First Baptist as we seek to carry out God’s plans? After reading Proverbs 14:12 — If you have decisions to make, take time to pray and meditate on God’s Word. Ask God to guide you in every decision you make — large and small. This verse warns us that our limited human perspective make seem right to us and still be terribly wrong. Praise God that He is so good to both warn us about our “broken compass” and give us spiritual discernment concerning our best path. After reading Acts 17:22-31 — Where are you going spiritually? Be sure you are progressing toward your inheritance in Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit walking at your side. Easter reminds us that Christ ascended so He could send us the Holy Spirit. Be certain you have a relationship with God through His Son’s sacrifice and resurrection and not a religion that depends on your own works. As Paul observed, man invents many ways to worship and live that God declares as unacceptable to Him. Know exactly how God says you may approach Him!
My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?
LONELINESS
After reading Psalm 25:16-22 — David talked to the Lord about the distressing emotions within. If we sit alone and feel sorry for ourselves, we will never grow in the Lord and accomplish greater things for Him. Troubles will either make or break us, turn us into giants or crush us into spiritual dwarves. God can heal our broken hearts if we give Him all the pieces and let Him have His way. After reading Matthew 27:45-46 — In this passage, our Lord directly quoted from Psalm 22:1. It was during this time of darkness that Jesus was made sin for us (2 Cor. 5:21). It is hard for us to see how God is accomplishing His plan in our darkest hours, but because of His Word, we can know with certainty that, if we are surrendered to Him, He is accomplishing something glorious in our trials. God never wastes our pain! Easter testifies to this truth. After reading Hebrews 12:1-3 — Those now with our Father in In the midst of our struggles, we have a Lord who heaven bear witness to us that God does, indeed, see us through to understands what it means to feel so alone that the end. One of the best ways to receive comfort and you feel abandoned by God. He felt abandoned encouragement is to get to know the godly men and women of the by God. No matter how we feel, our Savior Old Testament who ran the race and won. In this season of reminds us that we can believe in God's Word and renewal, commit anew to read God’s Word daily. God gives us the faith we need to endure. Are you in a position to receive His our Father's faithfulness. God keeps all His grace? Receive all He wants to give you this Easter! promises. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
BE AN ENCOURAGER
After reading Acts 4:32-37 — Barnabus’ encouragement ministry was important in the early church — so important he is mentioned at least twenty-five times in the book of Acts and another five times in the Epistles. He was a Spirit-filled man who was an encouragement because he gave his all to the Lord. Can you think of people at First Baptist or in our sister churches whom you could encourage? After reading Acts 13:1-39 — Paul was certainly filled with the Holy Spirit as he faced supernatural opposition and spiritual ignorance. The words of this passage are powerful. We wonder if Paul would ever have become the force he was were it not for Barnabus. Pray for the Lord to show you people with potential that you can encourage. Pray for them; use God’s Word to encourage them; help them; come alongside them. After reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-12 — These are prophetic Scriptures that tell us what we can expect to happen in the end times. The practical application of these verses: encouragement and edification. That we will meet our loved ones again and forever be with the Lord is a source of encouragement (1 Thess. 4:18), and the fact that we will not endure God’s wrath during the day of the Lord is another source of encouragement (1 Thess. 5:11). The truth of our Lord’s imminent return encourages us to keep clean (1 John 3:1-3) and to do faithfully whatever work He has assigned us, to attend church, and to love the brethren (Heb. 10:25). Knowing that we shall be with the Lord strengthens us in the difficulties of life (2 Cor. 5:1-8) and motivates us to win the lost (2 Cor. 5:9-21).

APRIL 8-14, 2012 Supplement to Growing Strong Book HIDDEN SAINTS
After reading Psalm 72 — As we reflect on Resurrection Sunday, we meditate on the truth that the throne of Jesus is founded on righteousness and justice. It is because Jesus fulfilled God’s righteousness in His life and death that sinners can be forgiven and have peace with God, and He is our “King of righteousness” and “King of peace” and will rule to the ends of the earth. When Jesus reigns on earth, the glory of God will be revealed as never before. All that is hidden will be revealed. How glorious our worship will be on that day! Each day this week, set aside time to worship and praise the Lord privately in continuance of the worship we enjoyed together on Easter. After reading Romans 16 — In this remarkable chapter, Paul names at least twenty-six people by name, as well as two unnamed saints, and he also greeted several churches that were meeting in homes. Paul made a lot of friends in the Lord. Through His resurrection, ascension, and sending of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ founded the church. In response to Easter, we celebrate our church family, especially those who have gone on to heaven to be with our King before us. Christ’s resurrection is the first fruit that assures us of our destiny. What comfort and joy is ours. We shall not only see His face but all those we have loved in the faith. O glorious day! After reading Philippians 4:21-22 — These verses remind us that the church is larger than any one congregation. Pray for unity in the Body of Christ and that our love for all the saints would be a witness to our lost world.
WATCH OUT FOR FAKES
After reading Luke 21:5-19 — This passage is known as “The Olivet Discourse,” the greatest prophetic sermon ever preached. The sermon focuses on a part of God’s plan called “the tribulation,” when God will pour out His wrath on the nations of the world. We should be aware that deception of all kinds will be on the rise as we near the second coming of our Lord. The only sure way to keep our balance in a deceptive world is to know the Scriptures and obey what God tells us to do (2 Peter 3:17-18). At whatever level you’ve been participating in our “Growing Strong Together” discipleship emphasis this year, consider whether you can commit more deeply to studying God’s Word. Allow this to be your season of renewal. Our world needs people steeped in God’s truth. After reading 1 John 1:5-10 — If we are walking in light, the darkness has to go. If we are holding on to sin, the light goes. There is no middle ground, no vague “gray” area where sin is concerned. We must be honest with ourselves, honest with others, and honest with God. The church is no place for phoniness. Ask yourself these questions: Are my prayers empty? Has worship become a dull routine? Am I critical of others at church? Let’s consecrate our lives, confess our sins, and come clean before the Lord in all things in response to Easter. After reading Philippians 1:9-11 — In this prayer for maturity, Paul begins with abounding and discerning love. The ability to discern is a mark of maturity. Pray for all the members of First Baptist, that we would have the kind of character that passes the test, that has been winnowed to remove the chaff. Here are two good tests for us to follow as we exercise spiritual discernment: (1) Will it make others stumble? (2) Will I be ashamed when Jesus returns? Easter reminded us that Jesus is coming. Onward to maturity — growing strong together!
CLICHÉS
After reading Job 15:3; 18:2 — How many of your words today were empty chatter? Could it be that people would listen to you more and that your words would be more productive if you spoke less and focused on the quality of your words more? Sincerely pray that God would transform your speech to bring more glory to Him. After reading Matthew 6:5-15; 23:27-39 — The fact that a request is repeated does not make it “vain repetition.” A request becomes “vain repetition” if it is only babbling of words without a sincere heart desire to seek and do God’s will. Dr. Robert A. Cook said, “All of us have one routine prayer in our system; and once we get rid of it, then we can really start to pray.” In this season of renewal, examine your prayer life and commit to sincerity. After reading Acts 5:40-7:22 — May this passage serve as inspiration that our words would always be a witness for Christ, even if speaking them earns us threats or persecution. The early church witnessed “daily”; they took advantage of witnessing opportunities no matter where they were. And Stephen’s words remind us of our need to know God’s Word deeply, so that we will speak the right words in the opportunities we have.
On Easter Sunday, let’s honor the sacrifice Jesus made for each of us by bringing our best to Him in worship. Prepare your heart through prayer and meditation on His Word this week. Let’s present 1 Peter 1:3-5, His Word hidden in our hearts, as a testimony of praise and faith in His promises.

APRIL 15-21, 2012 Supplement to Growing Strong Book A SHELTERING TREE
After reading 1 Kings 19:19-21 — At this point in Elijah’s ministry, he was a complaining, frustrated, ready-to-quit servant. God called him to recruit ministers from a new generation, but in doing so, He also assured Elijah that his own ministry hadn’t been a failure. We see that Elisha accepts God’s call, extended to him through Elijah. Are you weary? Pray about how God wants to use you to call the next generation to ministry. In so doing, you will be faithful to God’s plan and perhaps find a friend or two to refresh you in your walk with the Lord. After reading Proverbs 18:24; 27:9-10 — Friendship is something that must be cultivated, and its roots must grow deep. True friendships are based on love, loyalty, trust, and honesty. Faithful friends counsel and encourage each other. Friendships are blessings from the Lord! Pray about how to be a greater blessing through friendship to those within our church Body and to those alone in the world with no real friends. Let Jesus love through you!
THE LAW OF ECHOES
After reading Luke 6:27-42 — Jesus assumed that anybody who lived for eternal values would get into trouble with the world’s crowd. How should we treat our enemies? We must love them, do them good, and pray for them. Hatred only breeds more hatred, “for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires” (James 1:20). This cannot be done in our own strength, but it can be done through the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 5:5; Gal. 5:22-23). We must not look at these admonitions as a series of rules to be obeyed. They describe an attitude of heart that expresses itself positively when others are negative, and generously when others are selfish. These verses also remind us that we reap what we sow. He was not talking about eternal judgment but the way we are treated in this life. If we live to give, God will see to it that we receive, and viceversa. They key to living the way Jesus desires is being honest with ourselves and not becoming hypocrites. Do you have the attitude of heart Jesus describes in these verses? If not, how can you obtain this right attitude? After reading John 8:15 — This verse comes from a passage in which Jesus claims to be God (one of the great “I AM” passages in John). When we believe in the Light, the result is life and light for the believer. The unsaved walk in darkness because they love darkness. The Pharisees accused Him of bearing witness to Himself by claiming to be the Light of the world, and the Jewish courts would not permit a person to bear witness to himself. But light has to bear witness to itself! The only people who cannot see the light are blind people. Jesus made it clear that their witness was not dependable because their judgment was faulty. What implications does this passage have for believers about how we are to view other people? When we see people the way Christ sees them, what actions should follow? After reading James 4:7-12 — The word “submit” in this passage is a military term that means “get into your proper rank.” Unconditional surrender is the only way to complete victory. If there is any area of the life kept back from God, there will always be battles. This explains why uncommitted Christians cannot live with themselves or others. God graciously draws near when we deal with the sin in our lives that keeps Him at a distance. Are you inwardly humbled before God — drawing near, and asking for cleansing and forgiveness?
TOMORROW
After reading Proverbs 16:1-9; 27:1 — God expects us to use our brains and make plans, but He also expects us to submit those plans to Him and let Him make the final decision. If we’re yielded to the Lord and our plans are not His plans, Weekly Memory Verse — Proverbs 16:3 He will show us what’s right and steer us away from what’s wrong. Is it a habit of your lifestyle that you begin your Commit to the Lord whatever you do, search for God’s will by reading and obeying His Word, which and He will establish your plans. reveal the character and purposes of God? After reading Luke 12:13-21 — Rabbis were expected to help settle legal matters, but Jesus refused to get involved. Why? Because He knew that no answer He gave would solve the real problem, which was the heart. Their greatest need was to have their heart changed. Like too many people today, they wanted Jesus to serve them but not to save them. Jesus made it clear that true life does not come from an abundance of things, nor do true success or security. Are you “rich toward God?” Do you acknowledge gratefully that everything you have comes from God? Do you make an effort to use what He gives you for the good of others and the glory of God?

APRIL 22-28, 2012 Supplement to Growing Strong Book ILLOGICAL LOGIC
After reading Isaiah 55:1-11 — The Servant died for the sins of the whole world — Jews and Gentiles. These verses are His invitation: come and seek. Anyone who is thirsting for that which really satisfies is welcome to come. The Lord offered to them for free everything they were laboring for. If they listen to His Word, they will be inclined to come; for God draws sinners to Himself through His Word. What is involved in “seeking the Lord?” For one thing, it means admitting that we are sinners and that we have offended the holy God. It means repenting, changing one’s mind about sin, and turning away from sin to the Lord. We must turn to God in faith and believe His promise that in mercy He will abundantly pardon. We absolutely must recognize that God’s ways are higher than our ways. Have you ever tried to explain the grace of God to an unsaved person who thinks that heaven is a “Hall of Fame” for achievers instead of the Father’s house for believers? How does God go about calling and saving lost sinners? By the power of His Word. We never know how God will use even a casual word or witness to plant and water the seed in somebody’s heart. Ask the Lord to give You a clear vision of how He works and how He wants to work through You. Then, be ready to do and say whatever He leads you to do and say! After reading Psalm 73:1 — This Psalmist affirmed that “God is,” and he was certain that the God he worshipped was good. Furthermore, he knew that the Lord had made a covenant with Israel that promised blessings if the people obeyed Him. But the Psalmist does go on to wrestle with a problem: If the Lord was good and kept His covenant promises, why were His people suffering and the godless prospering? When pondering the mysteries of life, hold on to what you know for sure, and never doubt in the darkness what God has taught you in the light. After reading 2 Timothy 4:16-18 — Paul — what a man! His friends forsake him, and he prays that God will forgive them. His enemies try him, and he looks for opportunities to tell them how to be saved! What a difference it makes when the Holy Spirit controls your life. The Holy Spirit keeps our perspective higher than our circumstances. Praise God for His Word and for the indescribable gift of the Holy Spirit given to us by Jesus!
THE STING OF PEARLS
Weekly Memory Verse — Ephesians 4:31-32 After reading Daniel 6:1-28 — When other leaders heard about Darius’ plan to appoint Daniel to such a high Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling position, it irritated them and they tried to find and slander, along with every form of malice. These conniving officers tried to make We are just adding verse 31. Daniel’s religious practices illegal. Daniel’s response was “no compromise, no excuses.” A believer who knows how to kneel in prayer has no problem standing in the strength of the Lord. What message does Daniel’s testimony have for you today? After reading Job 23:8-12 — Job is complaining here that God seems to be hiding from him. How does a mere man go about finding God? God is present everywhere, but Job wanted a personal meeting with God. God knew where Job was — in the furnace. It was a furnace of God’s appointment, not because of Job’s sin. God would use Job’s affliction to purify him and make him a better man. When God puts His people into the furnace, He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat. We may question why He does it to begin with or why He doesn’t turn down the heat or even turn it off, but our questions are only evidences of unbelief. Some people go into the furnace of affliction, and it burns them; others go in, and the experience purifies them. What makes the difference? Their attitude toward the Word of God and the will of God. When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart! What questions do you have? Are they questions of unbelief? How can you gain God’s perspective?
BITTERNESS
After reading Genesis 27:41-45 — Is there anyone against whom you harbor a hateful grudge? God wants you to realize how much this heart-matter is hurting you! Ask Him to take it from you. Enjoy living in His blessing! After reading Matthew 18:21-25 — When we start living in an atmosphere of humility and honesty, we must take some risks. Unless humility and honesty result in forgiveness, relationships cannot be mended and strengthened. Jesus’ point of “seventy times seven” is that by the time we have forgiven a brother that many times, we are in the habit of forgiving. Jesus was not advising carelessness or shallow forgiveness. If we condemn a brother, we bring out the worst in him. But if we create an atmosphere of love and forgiveness, we can help God bring out the best in him. This parable is not about salvation but the power of forgiveness. Bring out the best for His glory!

WORSHIP GATHERING
As we assemble to worship, we are to come into the Presence of the living God, filled with awe, wonder and repentance (Isaiah 6). We do not come to be entertained or comforted or fulfilled; we come to offer ourselves in total adoration and reverence for the one true God.
April 1 . . . Renewing Our Beliefs God designed us to want to worship and relate to Him. When we gain this desire, we will come to His Word with fresh perspective. Palm Sunday will be a joyous opportunity to celebrate communion — a holy moment when we signify our oneness with Christ. May we do so with holy reverence, having made every effort to be at peace with one another, having repented of any known sins that grieve our Father’s heart. Please set aside at least one hour before Palm Sunday to pray through the guide on page 7 of your March Messenger. To consecrate ourselves together means greater unity as we declare Jesus truly “King of kings and Lord of Lords” on Palm Sunday. Our youth will tell about their March Missions Madness weekend. Be sure children are on time for Sunday School as they will join other area churches in waving palms as a testimony to our community. Following 11:00 worship, the children will enjoy a light lunch and an Easter egg hunt on the grounds of Stuart Hall. Renew your commitment to worship together in April!
April 8 . . . Renewing Our Hope
Come celebrate the glorious resurrection of our Lord! Grasping the true meaning of resurrection always renews hope! Let’s take hold of this hope personally and share it, building relationships and sharing God’s truth and love. No early service on Easter; the services will be combined as we offer unified worship and present our offering of God’s Word spoken from our hearts. Celebrate the resurrection truth of 1 Peter 1:3-5 by living for Christ everywhere you go. Invite your Circle of Twelve people to Easter worship!
April 15 . . . Renewing Our Faith When we live by faith, fear is dispelled and Christ is glorified. Let the testimonies of men of the Courageous Living small group renew your faith. Stay for lunch afterwards with the youth potato bar missions fundraiser. April 22 . . . Special Sunday with Guest Speaker Pete Campbell You may recognize Pete as a member of the Coachmen. Pete will both lead worship and preach in the 8:45 early service. He will also preach at the 11:00 service. Come, and invite friends! Let’s welcome him enthusiastically! Plan to stay afterward for our quarterly business meeting.
April 29 . . . Renewing Extra-Mile Effort
God changes us when we go beyond what is expected of us. He also speaks to others through our selfless actions and attitudes. Comfort Care Women’s Health will tell how they work with churches to minister to our community, and we’ll celebrate Grace Wilhelm’s 100th birthday together at a reception following our 11:00 service.

DISCIPLE MAKING
The Church must do everything it can to equip believers with an understanding of Scripture, of doctrine, and of the application of Christian truth to all of life. This teaching must affect how we live. Failure to teach and learn the Word is a failure of the Great Commission.
New Small Group Beginning April 2 THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR COUPLES
This new study begins Monday, April 2, at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Sandy Holsinger — 6 Seymour Circle, Staunton. Sandy will serve a light supper, and the Bible study will immediately follow. If you have not already signed up, please call Sandy at (540)248-4279, so she can have a book ready for you. Come, and invite friends, to discuss Keeping the Love Tank Full, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, Physical Touch and more. This study focuses on practical steps to truly loving one another and in ways that are meaningful to spouses.
THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR Continues and Is Open
This Bible study, led by Pam Traylor, focuses on holy Scripture, God’s handbook for the church. We understand that the Bible is the product of a single mind, the mind of God, but was recorded by various people in different cultures and in different languages across thousands of years. It is God’s progressive revelation of Himself. This group meets every Thursday. One may join the morning group (at 10:00) or the evening group (at 6:30) by coming to the chapel through the Madison Street door. The April schedule is as follows: April 5 . . . Job, April 12 . . . Psalms, April 19 . . . No meeting April 26 . . . Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon
COURAGEOUS LIVING Men’s Study Has Concluded
Our March men's Bible study focused on the movie Courageous and was just as thought-provoking and emotional as the movie. Using short, specific movie clips as starting points for discussion, we read from God's word — mainly from the book of Joshua, but others as well. The clips and Scripture allowed us to reflect on our own lives and our upbringing — how fathers, other family members, friends, and the hand of God impacted our lives. We shared heartfelt memories and emotions! Each study ended with a challenge to be courageous for Christ and to live as godly men. Our Bible study explored the courageous call to fight for family, to set priorities, to value what matters most, to live a life that will impact future generations and to stand in faith with Christ. The fellowship and Bible study, like the movie, were very powerful! Don't “let go of the wheel." Live courageously for Christ! "....But for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15).

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen,
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27). me and I feel very blessed to have you as friends. You will always be my extended church family. Thank you and God Bless, Mary Jo Clements Roth I want to thank Danny & Betty Pritchett for the soup and sandwiches, and everything they have done for me, and Edith Paxton for the cards she sends me. I appreciate Pastor Steve and the whole church family for the cards sent to me following the death of my brother and after my surgery. Doris Fitzgerald Thank you to all the classes, groups and individuals who ministered to the men in the Courageous Living Bible study by providing lunches — the New Life and Agape/Fellowship Sunday School classes, the WMU, the youth, and Mae Palmer and Stacey Nuckolls. Not having to leave church to eat was a contributing factor to this small group’s success, and parts of the Body sacrificially ministering to other parts of the Body is edifying and pleases our Lord! Pam Traylor just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay (Matthew 28:5-6). This Easter, celebrate the resurrection. We know through Christ's death we are redeemed, and through His blood our sins are forgiven, but all of that would be meaningless if He did not come out of the grave. All that He did on that old rugged cross for you and me would have been useless without the resurrection. Our faith would be dead, but He is alive! So, celebrate and tell the world. They need to hear some Good News. (Deacon Team Reports continued on next page)

STAFF SUPPORT TEAM DEACON MINISTRY
April is a month of the year that we would like to give special thanks to our church secretary, LAURA LEE HEWITT. April 25, 2012 is a special day set aside to show appreciation for Administrative Professionals. Laura Lee is a blessing to our church in her role as secretary. We are blessed to have such an efficient and willing individual to help with the many things that she does weekly for our church and who goes the extra mile in all she does. Please take the time during the month of April to show your appreciation for her through a card or act of kindness for all that she means to you. As 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” DEACON PRAYER MINISTRY What do you visualize when you hear the word “prayerful?” Hands folded, heads bowed, quietness all around? It’s a peaceful image and certainly that quiet time with God is essential to our spiritual life, a time not only for us to talk to God but for us to be quiet enough to hear Him talking to us. Now visualize these words: “Prayer Full.” Get a different picture? That’s what the Prayer Team is visualizing this year, people so full and saturated with communication with God that they have to empty out in service to others. So let’s make prayer the most important part of every gathering at First Baptist: business meetings, small groups, Sunday School, fellowships, mission trips. If we invite God first and foremost, every event will be “Prayer Full” and “Fulfilling.”
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:16-18)

CASSEROLE TEAM DEACON MINISTRY
Our focus is to offer you a meal in a time of crisis or when your life is changed due to a health issue or an event that occurs in your normal schedule. Please contact the person listed as the Team Leader for the month, or call the church office with the name and reason for the ministry so that we will know how to help when the meal is delivered.
DEACON CELEBRATION TEAM
Praise from Barbara Lee that her grandson, Lee Cummings, is home for a couple of weeks. He was in Iraq for a year and is preparing to go to Africa, but Barbara is enjoying his visit home inbetween deployments. Our congregation will celebrate Grace Wilhelm and the joy of her 100th birthday on April 29 immediately following the 11:00 worship service. We will have a reception in her honor and a card shower. Please bring a card for her and plan to wish her a special “Happy Birthday!” Cake and punch will be served.
WOMEN’S MISSIONARY UNION Linda Terry
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who participated in the recent “feed-ins”—lunch for the men’s Bible study on Sunday, March 18 and the Spring Fling evening at Gypsy Hill House on Monday, March 19! Reports from both groups have been “Mmm, it was so good!” FBC members are always ready to provide assistance, and I am so grateful to each of you. April Missions Opportunities ♥ April 3 – WMU Meeting, 6:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. All women are invited! ♥ April 4 – Children in Action and Mission Friends Easter Party for children at Valley Mission, 6:00 p.m. Human Exploitation Focus
Human Trafficking: the commerce and trade of people, legally or illegally, for modern-day slavery, forced labor, and servitude.
THE MESSENGER
PAGE 12
(WMU, cont’d from previous page) Why this is a missional issue: Human trafficking denies the dignity and value that God has placed on human life. It treats people as objects, as commodities. The Bible teaches the dignity and value of each human being, and Christ gave His life for the redemption of humans because of God’s great love for His creation. Examples: The likely venues of labor trafficking include agricultural or landscaping work, factories or “sweatshops,” hotel housekeeping or janitorial services, construction, day labor, restaurants, nail salons, domestic servitude, begging or peddling, illegal drug or arms trade, service or fishing industries, tourism and traveling carnivals. Victims: Men, women, and children are all potential victims of human trafficking. The following may be clues that a person is the victim of labor trafficking: • When a person is being controlled, unable to leave a job or move; • Where there are bruises or other signs of physical abuse; • Fear and depression; • They do not speak for themselves or do not speak English; • They do not have a passport or any other identification/documentation. “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice, who uses his neighbor’s service without ages and gives him nothing for his work” (Jer. 22:13).

Welcome Spring! Once again this year, FBC is proud to be one of the sponsors for the 3rd Annual Sgt. Tom E. Larner Memorial 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 8 AM. The race is a memorial to remember Tom (the son of Bob and Janet Larner) and to support his family. Proceeds will benefit his daughter Mackenzie's scholarship fund. Set this date on your calendar, and prayerfully consider being a part of this event. You can run and/or walk the 5K course (3.1 miles) in downtown Staunton. You can make a donation, or you can come out on May 5 to encourage and cheer for others. T-shirts are guaranteed to
those who register before April 6, 2012. You can find more details and register at www.tomlarner5k.com. "Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith..." (Hebrews 12:1-2). Men of First Baptist Church, save this date on your calendar now: Saturday, October 6, 2012. We're going charter fishing again this fall on the Chesapeake Bay aboard the Kit II, with Captain Danny Crabbe out of Heathsville, VA. Last year, we had such great fun and fellowship and caught plenty of fish! This year, we hope to do the same, but catch larger fish! More details will follow later, but save the date - October 6.
BROTHERHOOD Another tornado; again your Brotherhood and our church were able to help by sending money to First Baptist Church in Henryville, Indiana. Thank you for always sharing God's love in so many ways. Time and dates for clean-up days around the church will be announced. Please be willing to do your part to help make God's house as beautiful as it can be for His honor and glory. It's just over 125 days until the Annual Inside Brotherhood Yard and Bake Sale. It's not too early to gather up your stuff; we are now accepting donations. Please bring what you can to church. Pickup items will be scheduled this year. With the price of gas, we need to make each trip worthwhile, and plan each stop beforehand. Please give! This is really the only fundraiser your brotherhood has to enable us to give and share God's love in so many ways all year long. Pray! Plan now how you will help this year — how to serve and how to give to be part of your Brotherhood Yard Sale 2012. Thank you in advance for your support.

SACKS OF LOVE
The Lord continues to bless the ministry at Bessie Weller and is opening opportunities for other elementary students to benefit from the back pack ministry. Memorial Baptist Church is beginning the back pack ministry at Thomas Dixon’s preschool in April. In Augusta County, a back pack ministry has recently begun serving students at Clymore Elementary through efforts by Lebanon Church of the Brethren, Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, and Bethany United Methodist. Also, in March, Dr. Katherine Low, Mary Baldwin’s new chaplain, brought sixteen students to FBC to learn about the Sacks of Love program. Thank you to Fred and Betty Hale for meeting with these students. They learned so much that she has already asked to bring her fall class back to First Baptist. Who knows how God is working through these connections! Please continue praying as we know that these prayers are being answered through the work of the Lord. Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat….; “The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:15, 40).
JULY 4th FOOD BOOTH AT GYPSY HILL PARK
We have the opportunity to promote Operation Christmas Child once again this year on July 3rd and 4th. We are blessed to be able to partner once again with Chick-Fil-A in selling their food, with proceeds going to OCC and opportunities to hand promotional materials/ items from OCC. Volunteers will be needed for the following: selling food, transporting food from Chick-Fil-A to the park, wearing the Chick-Fil-A cow costume, set up/clean up crew, handing out brochures, and numerous other opportunities. Please pray about your involvement in this mission opportunity. A sign-up sheet will be available soon. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Sharon Flory at 292-1539.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY
The funds allocations through the mission involvement team help to support many ministries, as noted in last month’s newsletter, and Young Life is one of those ministries. Young Life of the Valley is a ministry that FBC supports financially, and some of our youth participate in throughout the school year. This is a non-denominational Christian organization for high school students reaching students at Lee High, Fort Defiance, Stuarts Draft, Wilson Memorial, and Waynesboro. Their mission is that every young person in the Valley would have the opportunity to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ. Please pray for this ministry and the youth of our church and community. How are you doing on preparing your boxes? I hope you are praying for the child that will receive your boxes. Also watch for sale item that can go in your box or boxes. Many of you are using coupons, and if you watch your sales, you can get a toothbrush or toothpaste for a very low cost or for free. Sometimes, you can also get free items if you double your coupons at stores. What a SAVVY way to shop! Rite-Aid and CVS have bonus coupons on your sales receipt and that is a good

way to use that extra “free” money if you do not have plans for it. You can purchase items and donate the items for the shoe boxes. Many of us get a $10 coupon from Penney’s occasionally and don’t want to use it at this time. You can use this money to purchase socks, underwear or clothes for the children. What fun we can have shopping and not spending any money! How exciting it can be to shop for the children and use the above techniques! Also I am looking for coloring books that will cost about 25 to 50 cents. If you find some, please let me know. Thanks!
YOUTH MINISTRY Allison Surber
We have been spending time with Francis Chan on Sunday afternoons in his latest book Crazy Love. We are reminded of God’s awesome power, attention to detail, and His unconditional love for us. We are asked to search our hearts and ask ourselves, “What we are giving back to Him?” Are we comfortable with status quo or are we ready to have that passionate love relationship He wants with each of us? Thanks to Fred and Betty Hale for Our youth hosting our helped to first clean up a Destination park as one Unknown. Congratulations, Fred and Jim! We ended the month with Mission Madness weekend. Our teenagers joined forces with youth from around Virginia to show God’s love to those in need in Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County. You will be hearing about their experience Palm Sunday. After a long weekend, they were still eager to cook for our men’s Sunday Bible study and nine other church members. We visited and served homemade chicken pot pie and dessert to some of our most faithful and much-loved members. Our first Impact Virginia fundraiser is planned for April 15th following the morning worship. Mark your calendars now to stay and enjoy a baked potato bar and talent show hosted by our youth. Please continue to pray for our young people as Christ works in and through them.
MISSION MADNESS
In March, the youth balanced serving people outside our church with those at FBC who laid a foundation of faith for us. We enjoyed cooking for and visiting with some wonderful people!
