Yield Alberta An excellent year for Alberta grain producers

W

e are pleased to provide the fifth edition of Yield Alberta. This is a joint publication brought to you by the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and Alberta Farmer.

The data

The data presented in Yield Alberta is farm-level data for a given year and based on (Alberta’s/our) 22 risk areas. Yields are adjusted for dockage and test weight, but not for quality. The data is presented as reported by farmers, as collected from an inspection on a claim or as gathered through random audit. To ensure that there is a reasonable sample size, and to protect the privacy of producers, varieties are only listed if they are grown by five or more producers in a risk area. In general, the larger the sample size and the higher the number of acres reported, the more representative the yields. Where there are a small number of acres reported, results may be more sensitive to growing conditions and field-specific circumstances. To ensure easy access to this data, staff at Agriculture and Rural Development have built an online tool for your use. This data is available at www.agric.gov.ab.ca/app96/loadrptinput. By entering their legal land description, producers may com-

The articles

2013 will be remembered as an excellent year for Alberta grain production. In an article written by Dean Dyck, the 2013 crop year is reviewed. 2013 was a year that began with some uncertainties and a late start, but finished with some of the best overall yields producers have seen. In 2013, we also witnessed how volatile prices can be. Provincial crop market analyst, Charlie Pearson, provides some insight into the price declines and the importance of the available tools to handle price risk. New to 2013 was the implementation of Growing Forward 2. With this new Framework Agreement, producers and stakeholders in the agriculture industry should be aware of the new programs available through this initiative. Also included in this publication is an article authored by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development research scientist Sheri Strydhorst. This article presents recent research into cultivar response to agronomic practices to optimize yields and profitability. We hope that you enjoy the articles and find the information provided here valuable. If you would like more information on this publication or the data, please contact AFSC at: Yield.Alberta@AFSC.ca.

If your fungicide doesn’t maximize plant health at flag leaf, that’s a red flag.

Every crop has its moment to shine. For cereals it’s at the flag-leaf stage, where up to 65% of the crop’s yield potential is determined. That’s where Twinline® fungicide comes in. It controls key diseases in wheat like septoria leaf spot, tan spot and rust at this critical stage. And Twinline goes beyond protecting plant health by actually boosting it with the unique benefits* of AgCelence®—greener leaves and stronger stems resulting in higher yield potential**. 2013 will be remembered as a year when growing conditions were superb. While excessive moisture was a problem when seeding started, warm, dry weather during May allowed for seeding to be completed on time around the province. During June, timely precipitation allowed crops to mature in good to excellent condition. The first two weeks of July brought hot, dry weather which advanced crop growth, and yields were expected to be approximately 10 to 20 per cent higher than the long-term averages. Cooler weather in August led to a small decline in crop conditions, but production was still expected to be higher than average.

6

YIELD ALBERTA

When harvest started in September, reported yields were exceptional with the quantities being the highest ever reported for almost all crops in all regions. When harvest was virtually complete in October, yields were estimated to be 20 per cent above the five-year average with aboveaverage crop quality.

Yields

Provincial crop yields on stubble in 2013 were significantly higher than 2012 because of the excellent growing conditions (see table 1). In fact, no crops experienced yield declines. In percentage terms, argentine canola,

CPS wheat, barley and oats had 30 per cent higher yields than 2012. Hard red spring wheat was up 25 per cent over 2012. Yields of all principal field crops exceeded the 10-year average, except brown mustard. In most areas of Alberta, the 2013 crop yields were significantly higher than 2012 (see table 2). In the southern part of the province, yields for canola and HRS wheat were 15 and 22 per cent higher than last year, respectively. The notable exception was barley, which only registered a two per cent increase in yield over 2012. Central Alberta rebounded from a disappointing 2012 and posted yields for barley, HRS wheat, field peas and canola that were equivalent to 2011. Northern Alberta saw double-digit increases over 2012 for the four major crops. Northwestern Alberta, in particular, saw exceptional yield increases of barley and HRS wheat. Yields in the Peace Region improved significantly in 2013, particularly field pea yields, which were up 58 per cent from 2012.

Quality

Based on the Alberta crop report statistics from 2013, the dry weather in September enabled above-average crop quality with 93 per cent of the spring wheat, 94 per cent of the barley, 90 per cent of the oats, and 97 per cent of the canola falling in the top two grades. Evaluating yield responses for 48 different management practices

System thinking research to optimize

estern Canada must advance agronomic practices to increase yields and profitability. Next-generation agronomy will include efficient and effective use of in-crop nitrogen, foliar fungicides, and plant growth regulators (PGRs). Although some of these practices are currently used in Alberta, further research is required to examine their performance in management systems. As a new agronomic research scientist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), I feel it is critical to take a novel and unique approach to agronomic

8

YIELD ALBERTA

2014

research. Our field studies began in 2013 to investigate stacking agronomic practices (foliar fungicides, PGRs and in-crop nitrogen fertilizer) to study them using a systems approach. Yield and agronomic benefits associated with these individual practices have been documented. However, there is very limited research testing the combined effects of these practices. This small-plot research project has been inspired by the ‘Wheat 150’ and ‘Barley 180’ field-scale trials being conducted throughout Alberta, which are led by Ty Faechner of ARECA. These trials involve testing similar

intensive management practices using a systems approach on a field scale. However, field-scale trials are unable to test all possible combinations of these agronomic practices. To effectively test all agronomic combinations using a scientifically rigorous approach, small-plot trials are required. The small-plot experimental design allows us to learn more about optimizing individual practices but also how different agronomic practices respond when used in combination. While this results in a very complicated experimental design, a large number of treatments and intricate data analysis, producers need this information to further increase yields in a significant way. Small-plot field research on wheat began in 2013 at Barrhead, Willingdon and Red Deer. Although these are just first-year results, and the research group is hesitant to draw any conclusions, early results look promising. Feedback from producers and agronomists indicated results were relevant and directly applicable at the farm level.

Plant growth regulators

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) have recently received a lot of attention and interest in western Canadian agronomic circles. The PGRs we are considering for use aim to produce shorter (two to 15 cm shorter), thicker and stronger stems to improve lodging resistance in intensive management systems. They can be an important agronomic tool in high-nitrogen management systems with ample moisture. Although PGRs occasionally increase

yields, their main purpose is to serve as a harvest management aid — to reduce lodging, reduce combine harvest time, and reduce straw production which aids in trash management in no-till systems. Our early results found that the PGRs performed exactly as intended. They reduced crop height and lodging (Table 1). As we continue our study in 2014, we will be testing the two PGRs which are in the process of registration for Western Canada: Chlormequat chloride and Trinexapac-ethyl. It is important for producers to recognize that the application timing of PGRs is critical to achieve desired effects. Agronomically beneficial applications of PGRs require uniform plant stands and high seeding rates. Careful crop staging is critical to avoid undesirable growth such as increased tillering and reduction in grain yields. We are currently in the process of developing a cereal staging guide to help producers and agronomists accurately stage their crops to ensure the best performance of PGRs and other agronomic inputs.

Yield responses of the 48 different management practices

Of the 48 different management practices that were tested, fungicide treatments significantly increased yields. At Barrhead, depending on the management practice, yields ranged from 106 to 148 bushels (bu.)/acre. The highest yields were achieved with a dual fungicide application of Continued on page 10

There was no significant yield response to supplemental in-crop nitrogen fertilizer or the PGR treatments; however, protein and 1,000 kernel weight data have not yet been analyzed. At Willingdon, there was no yield response to the management practices, but this might be attributed to the relatively dry conditions experienced at that location.

Headline applied at flag leaf followed by Prosaro applied 14 days later (Figure 1). There was 30 bu./acre yield increase reported with the dual fungicide treatment. The dual fungicide application of Headline + Prosaro costs $57.77/acre for product and application. The dual fungicide application at Barrhead (with its 30 bu./acre yield advantage) had to return more than $57.77/acre to be profitable, compared to the standard management practice where there was no supplemental nitrogen fertilizer, PGR or fungicide application. Similar trends were found at Red Deer. The dual fungicide applications increased yields by 33 bu./acre. Yield increases from the single fungicide applications were also observed. A sole application of Headline fungicide at flagleaf timing increased yields by 20-23 bu./acre. Similarly, the sole application of Prosaro fungicide at head emergence increased yields by 21-25 bu./acre.

Cultivar responses

An additional component in this study is to investigate how different wheat cultivars and wheat classes respond to advanced agronomic management. Research from other parts of the world has found that wheat cultivars differ in their response to PGRs, nitrogen fertilizer rates and foliar fungicides. However, it is unknown how current western Canadian cultivars (Table 2) respond to intensive agronomic management or if some cultivars are more responsive than others. Continued on page 12

Plans are underway to expand this project to five locations across Alberta in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In addition to studying wheat management systems, we will use a similar approach to study 52 different management practices in feed barley production systems and 15 different management systems in field pea. With an additional 15 site years of data, solid conclusions can be drawn and ARD can make specific recommendations to growers as to how they can maximize harvestability, yields, quality and profitability.

Cultivars selected for this study were based on: high yield potential, height, lodging rating and per cent of acres grown in Alberta based on AFSC data. At Barrhead, we found that all cultivars responded well to the management practices. However, at Red Deer, cultivars responded differently (Figure 3). For example, AC Andrew, Harvest and AC Foremost all had significantly higher yields with the dual fungicide application compared to the untreated control. In contrast, CDC Go did not have a yield response to any of the management practices. TOUGH WEEDS, MEET EXPRESS . ®

Crank up the rate all you want, glyphosate alone still misses a number of hard-to-kill weeds like narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, flixweed, stinkweed, dandelion and volunteer canola. With hotter-than-hot systemic activity, DuPont™ Express® herbicides don’t just control weeds, they smoke them from the inside out, getting right to the root of your toughest weed challenges with performance that glyphosate alone can’t match. It’s no wonder Express® goes down with glyphosate more than any other brand in Western Canada! Visit expressvideo.dupont.ca to see Express® in action – torching tough weeds like dandelion and volunteer canola right down to the roots, so they can’t grow back.

Express® brand herbicides. This is going to be hot. Questions? Ask your retailer, call 1-800-667-3925 or visit express.dupont.ca

Continued from page 14 using options strategies for crops where prices are based off a futures market (canola and wheat), grain company minimum price contracts and Agricultural Financial Services Corporation’s (AFSC) spring price endorsement. The contracts are different in how they work, both in terms of the minimum price and delivery. As an example, a minimum price contract with a grain company also means that you are committed to delivery, whereas options strategy and the AFSC spring price endorsement do not require a farmer to be locked into delivery commitment to a grain company. How premium levels are established also varies for the different types of contracts. Options on futures contracts and grain company minimum price contracts have premiums for coverage that vary daily based on changes in market prices whereas the spring endorsement premiums are set early in the spring and do not vary with market prices. So when should a farm manager consider a minimum price contract? The answer is when there is a lot of uncertainty about the direction of future prices and the farmer is in a situation where they need to make a decision about pricing because the values fit with the overall business plan for their operation. If the expectation for 16

yield Alberta

2014

future is prices will go higher, then a farmer will likely do nothing in terms of pricing, but will simply wait and sell at higher price. If futures prices are expected to go lower, then the strategy is to contract some of the crop ahead of time and lock in the price. If a farmer doesn’t know the future direction of prices and would like to make a pricing decision, then minimum price contracts are tools that should be considered. The decision around a minimum price contract involves looking at both the price risk side and the cost of the premium. The market outlook for the 2014 crop year looks very uncertain. If the world harvest produces another large crop in 2014-15, there is a strong probability that prices could go slightly lower than current new-crop forward contracts are offering. As has been seen in the past few years, a major production problem in one of the large crop-producing regions would tighten world crop supplies and cause prices to rally. So in the world of price uncertainty, minimum price contracts are a good contract to consider as a part of a farmer’s marketing plan. Within the minimum price contracts, the AFSC spring price endorsement should be considered as one of the alternatives. The basics of the decision on which contracts to use should be a farmer’s marketing plan which includes their financial and business needs as well as their market outlook.

We know the value of cold weather germination. We have to. It’s Canada.

Creating a seed treatment that can withstand this country’s unpredictable elements was no accident. Like you and your operation, Insure™ Cereal was built in Canada. Of course increased emergence in cool germination conditions is just one of this innovative seed treatment’s advantages. It also delivers more emerged seedlings, a more consistent plant stand, increased root biomass and larger shoot systems. They’re all part of the unique benefits* we call AgCelence®. And Insure Cereal is the only cereal seed treatment that has them. For details, visit agsolutions.ca/insure or call AgSolutions® Customer Care at 1-877-371-BASF (2273).

*AgCelence benefits refer to products that contain the active ingredient pyraclostrobin.

There’s no stronger tie than the family who works together on the same land. For them, farming’s a tradition. And although each new generation has their own ideas, there are some things they will be reluctant to change, the things that have consistently performed for them, the things that aren’t broken. InVigor® – proud to be part of your family farm for over 17 years.
