Heavy Horsepower Tractor Guide By September of 2017, the sales numbers for ag tractors in Canada were looking reasonably strong. While rigid-frame models above 100 horsepower were selling at a rate almost the same as 2016 (down less than 1 percent), four-wheel drive tractor sales were strong, up over 16 percent. In the U.S., however, the picture looks a bit gloomier. The ag equipment market down there has remained relatively soft through 2017. Sales of rigid-frame tractors above 100 horsepower fell over 16 percent compared to the previous year. Four-wheel drive tractors were a tiny bit of a bright spot, though, up just over 2 percent. But sales of those very-high horsepower machines account for only about 10 percent of the number of rigid-frame models sold. So activity in U.S. dealers’ show rooms has been slow, to say the least. Despite that, a recent poll of dealers in both the U.S. and Canada showed at least half expected their sales to grow at least slightly in 2018.

In Europe, manufacturers are optimistic that sales of ag equipment, especially tractors, will perk up in the coming months in that part of the world too. A survey conducted by DLG, the German Agricultural Society, showed that roughly 80 percent of European farmers are optimistic about their operations’ financial future and many expect to begin making new investments in machinery. As ever, farm-gate commodity prices remain a key factor underpinning equipment sales. When they’re soft, as corn prices in the U.S. have been, equipment sales numbers plummet. Here’s a look at the high-horsepower tractors major brands are offering this year to try and capture whatever purchases farmers are willing to make.

AGCO Following on the heels of the introduction of the new, very-high horsepower 1000 Series rigid frame tractors in 2016 wearing the Challenger name badge, this year AGCO’s yellow brand pulled the wraps off updated versions of its tracked MT700 line. The three models, which span the 380 to 431 horsepower range were given new styling that matches the look of the 1000 Series. Underneath the skin of the new two-track machines there are engineering updates all through the machines, so many, in fact, that AGCO calls these the “next generation” MT700 Series. Built on the new AccuEngineering Platform and including a redesigned MobilTrac system (track suspension), these MT700s are more than just tweaked versions of the earlier models. The 9.8 Litre AGCO Power diesel engine is described as a “high torque-low speed” design, which helps reduce fuel consumption because the engine runs at a relatively low r.p.m. Behind the engine, the new AccuDrive powertrain uses a CVT. The brand claims these systems all work together to make the tractors much more efficient at turning engine torque in useable traction. To make things more comfortable for the operator, the MaxxRide three stage suspension system includes oscillating mid-rollers, a redesigned hard bar suspension and lastly a cab suspension. Those features also improve handling on roads at higher speeds. The upgraded cab interior is something else AGCO marketing reps think operators will like. There is a digital upgrade in the MT700s as well. A new 10.4-inch touch screen has a “smartphone feel”. It’s also capable of working seamlessly with any ISOBUS 11783-compatible implement, including displaying real-time camera images and handling wireless data transfer tasks. The 2017 MT600 line of wheeled tractors were given a digital update as well. The new 9-inch touch screen now incorporates the Tractor Management Centre and an updated suite of precision farming technology. The new screen layout is more user friendly

according to the brand. 4 GB of onboard memory and Bluetooth capability better handle data transfer tasks. Massey Ferguson, Challenger’s sister brand, will also offer the same digital upgrade in the 8700 Series tractors. Two years ago, the 6700 S Series tractors were officially added to the MF line and first publicly unveiled at the U.S. Farm Progress Show in Iowa. Later this year, enhanced “S” versions will be introduced to the 7700 and 8700 lines in North America as well. AGCO held the first public showing of those new S Series models in November at Agritechnica in Germany. Among other things, the S models will incorporate a new body style that, according to the brand, give the tractors a “leading edge look”. The 8700 S models will also get the same cab suspension the brand previously introduced in the smaller series tractors. AGCO’s Fendt brand had more than a few leaps in technology to show at the 2017 Agritechnica show last November. And it took home three Silver Innovation Award medals for its efforts. The brand’s high-horsepower models will now be available with an updated version of the automatic tire inflation-deflation system called VarioGrip. The operator can adjust the tire pressure from about 9 to 36 psi. Fendt tractors can now be equipped with that feature on all axles and it can now work with dual wheels. The new VarioPull system is an adjustable drawbar that can increase traction and weight distribution between axles. The implement hitch can be raised or lowered and moved horizontally to within 80 cm of the rear axle. As the attachment point moves forward, weight distribution between the front and rear axles is improved and road stability increases. The operator can also extend the drawbar rearward to improve turning radius at the headlands. The system allows operators to reduce the front axle ballast and, therefore, overall tractor weight to reduce soil compaction. When used together, Fendt claims VarioGrip and VarioPull can significantly reduce wheel slippage and fuel consumption.

CASE IH This year Case IH’s Steiger line of four-wheel drive tractors became the first in North America to offer a CVT transmission option, called the CVXDrive. It’s available in the 370 through to 540 models. Marketing staff at the brand think this feature will allow for expanded use of the tractors, making them better suited to a variety of applications, aside from the traditional job of pulling big field implements. The transmission is described as a simple engineering design that makes it durable, but it offers some high-end features, such as the ability to select up to three programmable “cruise control” settings. It also has three sensitivity settings that create less responsive reactions to control inputs for delicate jobs like backing up to an implement to hitch it up. A propulsion lever on the right armrest gets the machine moving. But a foot pedal will also make that happen, freeing up a driver’s

right hand to control other functions like hydraulics. Shifting back and forth between forward and reverse can be done in a couple of ways as well, with a pair of buttons on the propulsion lever or via a familiar-style shuttle lever on the left side of the steering wheel. Inside, the transmission uses four ranges to help the engine deliver maximum torque, and the transmission automatically makes those shifts internally, without any input from the operator. It isn’t even possible to notice them when they happen. Engineers designed The CVXDrive to fit into the existing Steiger chassis, so it doesn’t compromise any other systems. Buyers can still get a PTO in all models along with up to eight remote hydraulic valves and a threepoint hitch that lifts 20,000 pounds (9,090 kilograms). Steigers equipped with the CVX can inch along as slowly as three feet per minute or hit the road at up to 25 m.p.h.

Spanning the 295 to 336 horsepower range, German-built DeutzFahr’s 9 Series remain the flagship models for the brand here in Canada, although the much bigger 11 Series top out the brand’s line in Europe. In 2016 Deutz-Fahr introduced the completely updated “Next Generation” 6 and 7 Series tractors, and they made their first appearance in North America in 2017. Built on what the company calls global tractor platforms, they use a modular design concept, meaning their sub-systems can be easily interchanged during assembly to suit different world market needs. Together, both the 6 and 7 Series offer a total of 14 models and about 600 available options combinations to meet those global differences. The company believes these 14 models along with the five in the larger 9 Series, which were introduced in 2015, will form the core of its future global tractor sales. Spanning the 156 to 226 horsepower range, the 6 Series models are available with Page 24 April 2018 • Atlantic • www.agdealer.com

the brand’s new (ZF built) RCshift technology. These programmable transmissions offer 5 gears within 6 powershift ranges, offering 30F/16R gear options. The 5 gears can function in automatic, manual or semi-automatic modes. And the transmission’s “intelligent” feature allows it to learn operator preferences for shifting. Despite those capabilities, the company claims the transmission is simple to program and operate. The two 7 Series tractors, which offer 226 and 246 horsepower and get a 2,868 mm wheelbase, are both limited to the TTV CVT transmission, which gives them a 0.2 to 60 km./hr. speed range. Like the 6 Series, these tractors will run at top road speeds with reduced engine revs. And speaking of engine revs, all 6 and 7 Series models will pack a Deutz 6.1 litre, six-cylinder diesel under the hood. The company claims these engines are more fuel efficient than their predecessors, and their DEF consumption has been reduced down into the 3 to 5 percent of fuel consumption range.

JCB 2017 was also the first full year of production for JCB’s updated 8000 Series Fastrac tractors. The company completely redesigned the models in that series and first showed them to the world in late 2016. The two newest 8000 Series models pushed the Fastrac line’s top engine horsepower ratings to 280 in the 8290 and 335 in the 8330, with peak horsepower numbers hitting 306 and 348 respectively. The equal-wheeled machines with the same mid-mounted cab and rear deck design used on the smaller 4000 Series have been signature features that defined the Fastrac since its introduction in 1991. The engine and transmissions under the 8000 Series hoods are from AGCO, so some parts availability stretches well beyond dedicated JCB dealers. An 8.4 litre SISU (AGCOPower) diesel mates to a programmable Fendt CVT transmission. That allows the engine

management system to run the tractor at the lowest possible r.p.m. during field operations (or it can be set for other priorities like field speed) and keep torque where it needs to be while minimizing fuel consumption, even in changing field conditions. The Activ Traction feature monitors wheel slip and throttles down the engine until traction returns, then the tractor picks up ground speed again. The 8000 tractors abandon the previous mechanical steering linkage for a hydrostatic dual-steer system. Two independent fluid circuits provide a fail safe system in the event of a failure in one or the other, and optional Rapid Steer changes the affect of steering wheel input based on ground speed, heightening sensitivity for low field speeds and reducing it for high road speeds.

JOHN DEERE John Deere added some muscle to the top end of its 8R line last year, with the addition of a 400 horsepower 8400R model. This year, Deere introduced two new models to the top of the smaller 6R line, unveiling them at the Agritechnica machinery show in Germany in November. The 6230R and 6250R will push up the horsepower offerings in that model series to 230 and 250 respectively. Both tractors get Deere’s 6.8 litre PowerTech PSS diesel under their hoods fitted with dual turbochargers and what the brand calls advanced DPF and SCR technology to meet emissions regulations. The Intelligent Power Management System (IPM) provides for a power boost of up to 50 horsepower when required, which means the largest model, the 6250R, can hit 300 horsepower under load. An “upgraded” AutoPower transmission allows for lower revs during roading, and it’s controlled through the redesigned CommandPRO joystick that offers 11 programmable buttons. The tractors also get full ISOBUS functionality, so compatible implements can be managed with the tractor’s existing control systems.

To keep the operator comfortable, the tractors offer a hydropneumatic cab suspension. And a newly designed self-levelling, triple-link front axle suspension can put up to 10 percent more horsepower to the ground, according to the company. For the 9R series, the redesigned composite fuel tank design introduced in 2016 will continue through to the 2017 models. The updated design allows for filling from either side of the tractor. Capacities for the two smaller 9Rs will be 320 U.S. gallons (1,200 litres). The larger 9250R and 9620R will get 400 gallons (1,514 litres) of fuel storage.

KUBOTA Marching slowly but surely toward full-liner status in the ag machinery sector, Kubota has grown its product line by acquiring other short-line manufacturers. And the company says it intends to offer progressively larger tractors to match the implements it adds to the orange line. But the three M7 Series tractors, which debuted in 2014, remain the flagship models for now, peaking at 168 horsepower The M7 models, which are built in France, offer high-end options to improve operator comfort. Up front is a suspended front axle with three different stiffness settings—firm, normal and soft—or a locked position. The cab can be equipped with a mechanical (spring) suspension system to further smoothen out the ride in rough fields. Under the hood, Kubota’s four-cylinder, 6.1 litre diesel can be mated to either a 24 speed powershift or a continuously variable transmission in the Premium KVT model. Both come with a 50 km/ hr option and include an electro-hydraulic shuttle shift feature.

Inside that cab is a right-side control arm arrangement and a fourfunction LCD monitor. It can control and monitor tractor systems, ISOBUS-compatible equipment, GPS auto guidance and remote camera views. The Standard, Premium and Premium KVT models offer a range of specifications that include a choice of open-centre or higher performing closed-centre hydraulic systems. All of these choices allow a buyer to spec out an M7 tractor for more basic duties or outfit one to be a well-equipped primary field tractor. In November Kubota unveiled the “second generation” M7s at Agritechnica in Germany, which offer a number of updated features. In 2017 Kubota also added to its North American parts distribution network. That’s a key element in creating a rapid parts supply network to dealers, something that is far more critical in the ag sector than in the small commercial equipment sector that has been the brand’s primary market.

McCORMICK McCormick tractors, one of the brands in Italy-based manufacturer ARGO’s stable, will have the X8 Series models at the top of its horsepower range again this year. The three models in this line range from 264 to 310 engine horsepower. 2017 marked the first full year of production for some new models in the smaller X7 Series. The ProDrive Standard models were added to the line in mid-2016 and offer 135, 152, and 159 rated engine horsepower. Overall, the combined tractor offerings in the X7 Series span the 131 to 181 horsepower range. The brand claims the Pro-Drive Standard tractors were added to the Series “to attract customers who want a mix or performance and value from their equipment”, of course that’s industry code for fewer features in exchange for a lower price tag. And it keeps the brand competitive

with other manufacturers who’ve increased their offerings in the lower-spec’d lines in recent years. The X7 Pro-Drive Standard tractors use the same 4.5 or 6.7 litre BETAPOWER diesel engines and power shift driveline used in the Premium models. The introduction of the Pro-Drive Standards came on the heels of the brand’s introduction of the higher-spec, two-model X7 VT-Drive tractors earlier in 2016, which offer 140 and 175 rated engine horsepower through a 50 k/hr-capable CVT transmission. In contrast to the Pro-Drive Standards, these tractors target the premium end of the market.

a respectable 72 g.p.m. (272 l/min.) hydraulic flow rate. It comes equipped with a category III and IV three-point rear hitch, which has a lift capacity of 9,000 kilograms. “Self-locking” differentials help improve traction.

Powering the K744 is a Tier 3 OM460LA turbocharged Mercedes Benz diesel, which doesn’t require DEF or a particulate exhaust filter. That’s because it qualifies for an exemption from current Environment Canada emissions regulations due to low sales volumes in this country. The K744 is currently the only new tractor in its horsepower class currently allowed that privilege.

A 10,000 hour or seven year engine and powertrain warranty is now available, along with a custom body colour option.

Behind the K744’s German engine is a 16F/8R partial power shift allowing on-the-go gear changes within each of four forward ranges and two reverse. The tractor rides on a suspended front axle and has

NEW HOLLAND In 2016 New Holland announced that four-wheel drive T9 tractors will be available with a less expensive in-house track module, the SmartTrax. Before that, T9s were only available with the heavy-duty track modules built for the brand by ATI. The SmartTrax modules are similar to those used on the T9s’ cousins, the Case IH Steiger Quadtracs.

Depending on operator preferences, the suspension can be operated in soft, normal and hard modes.

This fall, NH brought over another feature for its T9 tractors that was initially introduced on the Case IH Steigers: a CVT transmission.

The T7s will also be available with CustomSteer, which provides variable ratio steering that changes the responsiveness of steering wheel input. It offers three selectable settings and even a different responsiveness setting for forward and reverse travel. At high speeds, the tractor automatically but gradually moves out of a preselected setting to a less responsive mode for safety.

Also this year, the brand introduced an upgraded axle option on the T7 tractor line. It uses a new geometry and includes a self-centering feature that allows for better handling at road speeds. A new suspension system called “Skyhook” keeps the tractor level when there are loads on the rear three-point hitch, on a front linkage or loader. An accelerometer in the nose of the tractor monitors any chassis movement caused by uneven surfaces and continually adjusts the suspension dampening to improve safety and driver comfort.

VERSATILE Early in 2017 Winnipeg-based Versatile made a major change to the look of all its equipment, including the tractor line, calling it a return to “heritage” colors of red, yellow and black. Without a doubt, the new paint scheme ratchets up the equipment’s visual appeal.

A newly designed, frame-mounted ballasting system allows buyers to weight the tractor to match field needs without interfering with the driver’s rear view. In addition, a new cab suspension option creates more comfort for the operator.

But the changes introduced this year were more than skin deep. The brand also pushed at the top end of its horsepower cap, offering a 610 horsepower model in both wheeled and Delta Track versions. New engine management software and redesigned planetary gear sets in all the large-frame tractors have resulted in a boost in torque to the drive wheels. That jump, 15 percent in the Delta Track and 7 percent in the wheeled models, puts extra muscle in front of the drawbar by ensuring more of the power from the Cummins engines reaches the ground.

In the smaller, narrow-frame models, Versatile has ramped the horsepower ratings. The four models in that range now offer 380 to 460 horsepower.
