low horsepower tractor guide

Overall tractor sales in Canada have been on the rise through 2017, but the latter part of the year saw the pace of sales accelerate to push the full-year numbers even higher. In the 40 to 100 horsepower class, November saw a 20 percent bump over 2016 numbers. In the rigid-frame models over 100 horsepower, growth that same month was 12 percent over the same time in the previous year. December saw jumps of 15.5 and 12.9 in those two segments, respectively.

The overall result seems to indicate Canadian farmers haven’t been too shy about going to their local dealers and bringing home new tractors. All the horsepower classes in the rigid frame configuration slid into the New Year with an overall growth of 15.1 percent, despite the high value of the U.S. dollar. In 2017 most manufacturers added a new model or two or updated some of their machines. Here’s a run down of what buyers can expect to find on dealers’ lots when it comes to utility-class tractors.

CaSe Ih In August Case IH announced it had redesigned the Maxxum tractor line for 2018, and arguably, the most interesting of the new features built into them were the transmission options Maxxum buyers can now pick from, which include the previous ActiveDrive 4 semipowershift, the CVXDrive CVT and the all-new ActiveDrive 8 dualclutch powershift. The ActiveDrive 8 24-speed (forward and reverse) transmission is brand new and offers eight powershift speeds in each of three electronically shifted ranges. Shifting through the middle range allows an operator to choose working speeds between 2.4 and 10.7 m.p.h. without torque interruptions or requiring range changes. The ActiveDrive includes a number of features, such as “smart range shifting” that will select the correct gear to maintain ground speeds. The operator can select a faster or slower ground speed and the transmission will change to the most efficient gear to achieve that under the existing load. Maxxums have a clutch pedal in the usual place but with the ActiveDrive 8 transmission, operators won’t need to use it much. The “brake-to-clutch” feature allows an operator to just step on the brake pedals to stop the tractor, release the brakes and it starts off again.

The memory shuttle feature lets the tractor change direction without clutching and automatically selects the last reverse gear used. Maxxums also get adaptive (variable ratio) steering that allows for different steering input sensitivities depending on the speed of the tractor, requiring less steering wheel input when performing slowspeed operations. Front-end hood styling looks a little different for 2018, and marketing staff members say the more efficient airflow through it has helped improve engine cooling. That, along with some engineering redesigns and automatic functions, has reduced total fluid consumption (fuel and DEF) by five percent over the previous models. In all, there are five Maxxum models spanning the 116 to 145 engine (95 to 125 PTO) horsepower range. Factory installed AFS AccuGuide auto steering is also now available in the MFWD tractors. The two, two-wheel drive models introduced this year don’t get that option, but they can be fitted with Case IH’s transferable AFS ElectriSteer guidance package that bolts to the steering wheel shaft.

Challenger The MT400 Series tractors in AGCO’s Challenger brand make up its offering in the utility tractor segment. These models rely on the brand’s 4.9-litre AGCO Power diesel engines for power, and maximum horsepower ratings tops out at 150. Depending on the specific model, buyers can opt to route that power through the 50 km/h capable TechStar CVT transmission or the 24 x 24 AutoPower IV or 16 x 16 AutoPower VI. The higher-spec MT400E models, which were first introduced in late 2016, offer a “brake-to-neutral” system that allows the operator to stop the tractor by just stepping on the brake pedal. When the pedal is released the tractor begins moving again.

The MT400Es are available with either an open or closed hydraulic pump that provides 100 to 190 l/min flow rate (depending on the options selected) at the rear SCVs. And four different PTO speeds are available, 540 and 1,000 are standard and that can be upgraded to include economy modes in both speeds. Those “E” modes allow for lower fuel consumption when powering light loads. When equipped with a loader, the MT400Es offer a 2,287 kilogram (5,032 pound) lift capacity, and they can be ordered with an optional front three-point hitch. A suspended front axle allows for 4.5 inches of suspension travel to smoothen out the ride and improve traction.

Deutz-Fahr Deutz-Fahr introduced the world to its “Next Generation” 6 and 7 Series tractors in early 2016. Designed to be what the company calls Global Tractor Platforms, they use a modular design concept, meaning their sub-systems can be easily interchanged during assembly to suit different world market needs. Together, both series offer a total of 14 models and an astonishing 600 available options to meet those global differences. John Deere Deere continues to have a very strong presence in the utility and medium horsepower segment. This year at Agritechnica the brand introduced two new tractors to the top end of its 6R line pushing maximum horsepower ratings in that line to 250 with a pair of six-cylinder models, giving that line a range from 110 to 250 horsepower. At the lower end of the 6R line are three four-cylinder models that pump 110 to 130 horsepower out of a 4.5 litre (275 cubic inch) diesel. The PowerTech PSS engines breath in through a dual turbocharger arrangement. They’re all available in both two and four-wheel drive with cabs or open operator stations.

Kubota With the introduction of the three-model M7 Series in 2014, Kubota ag tractors have crept up into the lower-horsepower end of the row-crop tractor segment. And the brand promises there will be even bigger tractors wearing the Kubota nameplate in the future. But so far the 168 horsepower M7-171 remains Kubota’s flagship model. However, the brand showed off an updated M7-172 model at Agritechnica in Germany in November. It offers a variety of upgrades according to marketing reps. Expect to see the updated version make an appearance at a North American show sometime this year. The current M7 models, which are built in France, offer high-end options to improve operator comfort. Up front is a suspended front axle with three different stiffness settings—firm, normal and soft—or a locked position. The cab can be equipped with a mechanical (spring) suspension system to further smoothen out the ride in rough fields.

Under the hood, Kubota’s four-cylinder, 6.1 litre diesel can be mated to either a 24 speed powershift or a continuously variable transmission in the Premium KVT model. Both come with a 50 km/h. option and include an electro-hydraulic shuttle shift feature. Inside that cab is a right-side control arm arrangement and a fourfunction LCD monitor. It can control and monitor tractor systems, ISOBUS-compatible equipment, GPS auto guidance and remote camera views. The Standard, Premium and Premium KVT models offer a range of specifications that include a choice of open-centre or higher performing closed-centre hydraulic systems. All of these choices allow a buyer to spec out an M7 tractor for more basic duties or outfit one to be a capable, well-equipped primary field tractor.

The Mahindra 9000 Series offers four models and pushes the maximum horsepower available from the brand to 120.

MahInDra India-based Mahindra has had a presence in North America since 1993 and since that time has been offering only compact and sub-compact utility tractors, which went mainly to acreage owners and lifestyle farmers. This past fall, the brand introduced three new model ranges, the 6000, 7000 and 9000, which push the maximum horsepower offering from its previous high of 80 up to 120. Although the president of Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Sector says the brand isn’t yet trying to make a major move into the mainstream agricultural equipment marketplace yet, the four models in the new 9000 Series will have some appeal to farmers, especially livestock producers looking for a tractor with a front-end loader to run a round baler.

Under their hoods is a newly designed common-rail, turbocharged 3.5 litre (the 6000 gets a 2.6 litre) diesel, called the mCRD (Mahindra Common-Rail Diesel), which the company claims is the product of a recent $30 million investment in engineering and development. The 3.5 litre delivers Power through a synchromesh power-shuttle transmission, with 12 x 12 or 32 x 32 gear options. The tractors stick with an open-centre hydraulic pump design that puts out 79.7 l/min. in the 9000 models, 61.2 in the 7000 and 42 in the 6000. These models were made available for dealer orders in October and the company is already delivering them.

Factory installed loaders on the 9000s give them a respectable lift height of 4.1 metres (13.5 feet) and a load capacity at maximum lift of just under 2.5 tonnes (5,500 pounds).

MaSSeY FerguSOn In 2016 AGCO unveiled its 6700S Series MF models at the U.S. Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, describing them as “big midrange tractors”. Powered by an AGCO Power 4.9 litre diesel, the three tractors in this series, which offer 140 to 160 horsepower, are available with three transmission options, including a CVT. The 6700S models are upgraded versions of the previous 6600 Series, according to Eric Zimmerman, MF tactical marketing manager for MF and Challenger high-horsepower tractors. “What we focused on was power, comfort, technology and ease of use,” he said. In November at Agritechnica in Germany, the brand built on the “S” Series idea by introducing a whole range of “S Effect” tractors, which range right up to the flagship 8700 Series.

It comes with the choice of either the Dyna-4 or Dyna-6 transmission, with brake-to-neutral and the further option of AutoDrive. Company marketers describe it as “the ideal loader tractor”. Expect to see the expanded line of “S Effect” models cross the Atlantic this year and appear at North American farm machinery shows.

McCorMiCk McCormick introduced its X7 Pro-Drive Standards at the U.S. Farm Progress Show in Iowa in August of 2016. In all, they added three new models to the existing X7 line. They were described as “reduced specification” versions with 135, 152, and 159 rated engine horsepower. The combined offerings in McCormick’s X7 Series span the 131 to 181 horsepower range. A few months after the three X7 Pro-Drive models debuted, the brand introduced the X7 VT-Drive models that route power through a 50 km/h-capable CVT transmission. The X7 Pro-Drive Standards use the same four-cylinder 4.5 or six-cylinder 6.7 litre BETAPOWER diesel engines and power-shift drivelines built into in the other X7 models. Those transmissions have four power-shift gears and six synchronized ranges with fully automatic shifting. The smaller X6 Series offers three models in the 111 to 130 horsepower. They too use the four-cylinder, 4.5 litre BETAPOWER

diesels and route power through the brand’s Xtrapower transmissions with hydraulic shuttle and de-clutching features. It’s a 12-speed mechanical gearbox with four synchronized gears and three ranges. The 133 horsepower X6-430 VT is available with a powershift transmission. The X6 VT Drive tractor won Tractor of the Year in the utility category at Agritechnica in November. The brand now also offers two more-powerful versions of the X6 with the L Series models that put out 131 and 150 horsepower. The engines are mated to an 18-speed hydraulic shuttle transmission with six synchronized gears and three ranges. It allows operators to change direction without clutching. They get an open-centre hydraulic system that has an 87 l/min (23 g.p.m.) pump for implement functions and a dedicated 38 l/min (10 g.p.m.) pump for the steering system.

The Canadian distributor for MTZ tractors has been increasing the range of frontwheel assist models available from that manufacturer, which is based in Belarus. Currently, it offering tractors from 84 to 155 in the utility segment. In the 85 horsepower MTZ 920 a fourcylinder diesel routes power through a 7 x 7 mechanical shuttle shift or 14 x 4 transmissions. At the upper end of the utility class models the MTZ 1523 gets power from a six-cylinder engine and offers a 16 x 8 mechanical shuttle transmission. There is also an optional powershift transmission option with a choice of 16 x 8 or 24 x 12 speeds.

New HollaNd New Holland has upgraded its T5 line, giving them Tier IV compliant engines for 2018. They rely on FPT’s 3.4-litre, four-cylinder diesels, which use the brand’s Compact HI-eSCR and light-CEGR systems to scrub the exhaust emissions. Behind the engines, the Dual Command 24 x 24 transmission is standard equipment. That enginetransmission combination gives the four tractors in this series a horsepower range of 73 to 100 when measured at the PTO. Moving up the scale, the four TS6 models, which provide a lower specification in the utility segment, push PTO horsepower ratings from 90 to 115 and are also now Tier IV compliant. They use FPT’s 4.5-litre diesel. The base transmission offering in these tractors is an 8 x 8 synchronized hydraulic shuttle shift. Buyers can opt to put an 8 x 8 synchronized mechanical shuttle shift or take what the brand considers its “premium” option, the 16 x 8 synchronized hydraulic shuttle shift. The higher spec’d T6 Series includes five models that use either the 4.5-litre diesel or bump up to a six-cylinder 6.7-litre in the series’ 180 horsepower flagship model, the T6.180. There are six transmission choices for the T6 Series, which include the base 16 x 16 Electro Command semi-powershift. There is a 32 x 32 creeper version along with three Electro Commands with AutoShift or two CVTs with different maximum speed capabilities. However, in August the brand announced it would also include the new 24 x 24 Dynamic Command option on T6 models. Page 30
