Well, as we all predicted some weeks ago there was the possibility of FC Halifax Town and Guiseley playing one another five times in the last few weeks of the season and so it has come to pass. Two league games, two play-off games and the West Riding County Cup Final are the games in question and wonderful for the West Riding area that both clubs are involved at the business end of the season. Just a shame it is not the final! As always, we are delighted to welcome everyone from Guiseley AFC and hopefully a significant number of travelling fans making the short journey from Nethermoor and with 350 or so advised, we hope you enjoy your visit to Halifax. We also welcome the Chairman Steve Parkin, fellow directors and committee, Manager Steve Kittrick and his team for what we hope will be a great football advert over the two legs, for The Football Conference and the North division in particular. For us there is no pressure as Guiseley come in to the two legged tie as favourites after another excellent season. Finishing second, with more points than Hyde got promoted with last season, the Guiseley club will be desperate to go one stage further this season by achieving promotion, after failing automatically due to the outstanding performance of Chester getting over 100 points. It must be very disappointing for all at Nethermoor but still an excellent achievement, achieving the play-offs on three successive occasions, narrowly losing out in the 2011 Final to Telford at New Bucks Head in an enthralling game. It is pleasing to come in to the tie as 'underdogs' for a change and we look forward to a great contest. To Neil and his team, we want to say 'well done' for getting in to the play-offs after what can only be described as the worst season ever for match postponements. Not going over all those scenarios again but it has affected our performances on the pitch due to the cramming of games and financially, with the drop in attendances and income from

sponsorships. Still, we have to start next season again one week after the Conference Premier and two weeks after the Football League starts. If you feel like us, we would prefer to watch an extra Saturday and Tuesday game take place in August rather than some freezing night in February, it just does not make sense. If a team has a run in the FA Cup, FA Trophy, both or in the County Cup, the burden of extra fixtures, on top of postponements etc. can have a huge effect, which it has for us and others this season. Both ourselves and Guiseley have been trying to rest weary legs, rotating squads, bringing in squad players and Under 19s, to try and spread the load. Four games a week over four weeks is no joke, but now we are involved in the sort of occasion that football is all about, no matter what level of the game. Good crowds, good buzz and something meaningful to play for. We are sure both Clubs want promotion having worked so hard to get this far. Someone will be disappointed by 5.00pm on Saturday after the second leg, but whatever the outcome we must be gracious to our opponents and if we have lost, wish them all the best for the final and dust ourselves down and get ready for the next season. If we win, enjoy the moment and get ready for a tough Sunday final away at either Brackley or Altrincham. Football has to be the winner! As is customary at this time of the season, we try and acknowledge everyone who has contributed to the on-going progress of the Football Club. It is impossible to mention everyone by name, but we would like to express our profound gratitude to everyone who makes a contribution throughout the season, either on the payroll or in particular, volunteers who help the Club, simply because they want to. You can feel disheartened sometimes when people highlight what the Club does not do or has not achieved and yet it is so easy to take for granted the multitude of tasks that do take place or are achieved, so it is great when others want to help make a difference. To you the fans, thank you for your on-going support and also the

BOARDROOM NOTES wonderful away support you have given. We know it has been a very difficult season and at times not enjoyable with all the frustrations of games being on, off, maybe and so on. Whilst the same applies to all our fans, to the season ticket holders we can only hope that despite the difficulties this season, you will also continue to support us in the way you have previously. The early season monies generated through these ticket sales is vital and helps shape the quality of the squad for the new season. To Neil, Lee, Helly, Dan the Physio and Gareth McClelland on the football side and of course the players, well done and thank you to all. We are holding the End of Season Dinner on Saturday 18th May in the Banqueting Suite at the Shay Stadium. It will be a great evening with lots of entertainment in store, not least to see which players are going to come away with any of the various awards on the night, as well as the goals of the season. A night not to be missed and this year it is in Halifax! Please support it as tickets are only ÂŁ29 per head. We all know that match day requires a host of volunteers and to EVERYONE involved the Club is hugely grateful. Whether it is allowing supporters in to the ground, various match day hosts, programme sellers, 50:50 ticket sellers you all do a great job! Graham Osbourne and Mark Hans do great work around the Stadium and this must have been a season from hell, let us hope the considerable investment in the pitch during the summer, returns the pitch to its previous excellent condition and surface. To Kit Walton and the Supporter's Club, George Probets and members of the Commercial Group, Pam Burton and her Community Group and Simon Denton of SDS (Shaymen Down South), thank you for all your considerable input, suggestions, introductions and general desire to help the Club progress. A special mention for Kelly Gilchrist for the outstanding work she puts in to overseeing, developing and coordinating the whole media effort of the Club via the website, Shaymen Player and the recruitment of the team. For this we are so grateful to Huddersfield University and Keith Butterick who allows us to meet students who want to aid their studies by doing practical experience with FC Halifax Town. To all the students who have participated this year, we thank you for all that you have done and sincerely hope that your experience of travelling all around the country will help in some way for you to achieve the qualification levels you require, come results day?! The quality of what is achieved is to a standard even above that of some Football League Clubs, who have full-time staff to manage the processes. Well done to all!! The programme is another part of the Club which is going from strength to strength with sales

at an all-time high and we are grateful to all the contributors and it would be remiss not to make special mention of Adam Cheshire who is a key member of the team, helping with articles throughout our media efforts. Again we are grateful to Greg Stainton for designing and producing our marketing materials and Darren Murphy for doing photography on behalf of the club. Finally, the Club needs a good backroom staff off the pitch making sure that the considerable demands of running a football club and the requirements for bringing in revenue for the business, are achieved. Congratulations to Hayley Horne our Club Secretary who is expecting a baby in August/September and who we will have to find a temporary replacement whilst she is on maternity leave. She assures us she will be back, but whatever, 'we wish her well'. Nigel Walker has come in to the Club to take on the off-field sales duties, working alongside Pete Stajic (Associate Director), a huge thank you to you all for your efforts during the last year. Of course, every Club needs its sponsors, small or large and we are indebted to the support you provide for the Club. To our senior sponsors of our home playing kit we say 'thank you' to Doodson Broking Group, in particular Simon Harrison, Tim Marshall, Ian Hesselden, and Neil Clayton for agreeing to sponsor the Club for the next three years. We are also grateful to Sovereign Healthcare who has kindly continued to support the club through our Community Partnership and we are delighted to welcome Chief Executive Russ Piper who is with us this evening. Hope you have recovered well from your recent broken leg, Russ? Also, to FIT UK who have sponsored via an education programme the Under 19s for the 20122013 season, which has seen 16 students attend Level 2 and Level 3 classes throughout the year and play football for the Under 19s Youth Team in the Football Conference Youth League – North and the FA Youth Cup, before bowing out to Scunthorpe Utd. Thanks must go to coach Des Hazel and Youth Secretary, Sam Shaw. Writing these notes, we hope the season is far from over, although it is as far as any further home fixtures are concerned. Whatever, we hope you enjoy the close season and come back refreshed for a new campaign, whatever league we are in. Please enjoy the two games at least we have in store, no matter how nail-biting! Please, please respect our visitors from Guiseley and not least the match officials, as they all want to enjoy the occasion as well. Win or lose, hold your heads up high! COME ON THE SHAYMEN!

MANAGERS NOTES Good evening and welcome to the final Shay game of the season, as we host neighbours Guiseley in the first leg of the play-off semi-final. As always, a warm and friendly welcome to our visitors who make the short trip to Halifax and I hope you have a safe return journey home, before we come to visit Nethermoor at the weekend. It's a local derby and Guiseley have had a great season and we know what they're capable of on the day. So it's going to be tough. You expect that in the play-offs. But I'm only concerned about how my players perform. And we've got to make sure we perform on the night.

“Everything needs to be better” And let's be honest, if we want to be successful, then we have to be much better than we were at Bower Fold on Saturday. That was the perfect opportunity for some players to force themselves into my plans for tonight. In fact, it was a reverse. The players were trying to play themselves out of the team. They certainly weren't playing themselves into the team; that was my gut reaction at the end of the game. If somebody would have had three great games last week then I'd be thinking, “I've got to play him.” That's what I wanted. But I can't say that happened. The lads that haven't been playing will have been thinking, “Nobody is trying to force me out of the team.” That is disappointing because you're talking about people who have played a lot of games at this level and they should be putting the pressure on. I should be really struggling to pick the team tonight. That's what I want as manager. I want to have options in all positions and I want to have a difficult job. I want players knocking on my door saying, “Why am I not playing?” And after the Stalybridge Celtic defeat, I questioned whether anyone could say that? I was frustrated after the 1-0 loss. I always am frustrated when we don't play well. There were people playing in a game where they were hopefully trying to put in a performance to get into the team tonight and you would have expected to see a lot more than what I got. We had some words after the game but it will be different tonight. The tempo needs to be up and everything needs to be better. The desire, the application, the passing; I could go through the whole lot. Everything needs to be better to get the result. I expect it to be better.

FC HalifaxTown

I've stressed how important it is. But we didn't pass the ball well enough, we didn't pass it quickly enough, we didn't keep the ball good enough upfront which would have allowed us to keep possession and bring other players into play and we gave away a sloppy goal due to a lack of concentration. We need to do a lot of things better and if you're playing against ten men you've got to be able to move the ball quicker and pull people out of position. We didn't do that. I can now only accept this performance if we win tonight. If I don't get a reaction and we play in a similar fashion then we deserve to be criticised. If we get the right reaction and the players come out firing then nobody will remember the Stalybridge game. In regards to the sending off incident, if Osebi Abadaki hadn't have had a shin pad on then he would have had a broken leg. It was a horrendous tackle. I'm all for players going into challenges but that really was horrendous. In my days, if somebody had put a challenge in like that on one of my team-mates, I would have liked to have raised my game to make sure we got the result. We didn't do that though and that was disappointing. Phil Senior got his first taste of league action at Stalybridge and I have to say that he is a model professional. He might not like accepting it but he has had to accept that Matty Glennon has been first choice. I don't like to chop and change my goalkeepers but I felt that if I need to play Phil in the play-offs - if Matty gets injured for instance then it would be wrong not to give him 90 minutes before the end of the regular season. His positional sense off his line is very good and he is good in the box. I just thought that it was important to give him a game and he did well. Staying on the subject of goalkeepers, Stalybridge played with a defensive-midfielder in net. He had played in goal the other night but for an outfield player I thought he played quite well actually! But we needed to test him more. We needed to get him to make decisions but we didn't. But now, we've got a few players who can now come back into the side and hopefully they can give us a zip. From my point of view, the main thing was that I didn't lose players through injury. Of course I would have liked to have got a couple of wins last week from our three games but the main thing is that we're injury free.

“We need your support” But it will all be dependent on how we play in the play-offs. All last week of not putting out a full-strength team has been to try and give us the best possible chance of success in the play-offs. Now is the time to find out if we were wise to do that. We could have played brilliantly on Saturday but it would have had no bearing whatsoever on the Guiseley game. I've been in the play-offs enough; it's all about on the night. So I won't have lost sleep over the Stalybridge result and performance because that will not affect tonight. Over two-legs we have got to make sure that we are at our best. If a team does beat us in the play-offs and if we've played at our best, we will know that the opposition will have had to have played out of their skins to beat us. If we can play at our best then we know that we can be a match for anybody. And I'm looking forward to the games; nobody was looking forward to our last three games of the league season, let's be honest. It's been hard for the supporters and it's magnificent that hundreds came to Altrincham and Stalybridge. But now we are into what really matters and these will be better games to look forward to.

“A lot at stake” And we need your support, especially tonight. But I can't just expect people to support – they need to see something on the pitch that gives the supporters some encouragement. Players need to run that extra few yards, put in that extra tackle; anything just to set the supporters off. This is a game where there is a lot at stake, so naturally, the supporters will get behind us but we have to produce for them. We need to be at our best and if we give it a good go then the supporters will get behind us. I am appealing to you, the supporters. We need your backing tonight and on Saturday. We need your encouragement and we need you all to get behind the team. All fans can get frustrated but tonight is the night when you need to get behind everyone who plays and hopefully that can give us an extra lift. Cheer the lads on, Neil

THE SHAY'S VISITORS: SPOTLIGHT ON GUISELEY AFC FC Halifax Town welcome Guiseley to The Shay this evening, as the sides prepare to battle it out for a place in the play-off final. Both clubs have enjoyed prolonged spells of knowing they would be participating in the end-of-season knockout, Guiseley had especially been guaranteed of a place for a number of weeks, though it was not until the final week of the season that the clubs found out they would be playing each other for what will be four times in just over four weeks. Twice during the regular league campaign Town and Guiseley locked horns, as the pair first met at the beginning of the month, as a result of the bad weather forcing the pair's first meeting of the season to be pushed back as far as April 3. The first match ended one goal apiece as the Shaymen had to come from behind to claim a point at Nethermoor, and felt somewhat hard done by to not be heading back to The Shay with all three points. Town had the best of the match in the last hour of the game, as Chris Worsley, captain Danny Lowe and Sean Williams all hit the crossbar. The opening exchanges belonged to the home side, though, as Matthew Shaw reported: “It didn't take Steve Kittrick's side long to take the lead however, as... a short free kick was eventually whipped in by Andy Holdsworth and the unmarked Mark Bower headed home to become the second former Shayman to score against his old club in consecutive games.” Town had to respond to going behind inside ten minutes and did so by rattling the

GUISELEY AFC

woodwork three times before Dan Gardner levelled. “It took 65 minutes, but that goal did come,” wrote Shaw. “A quick free kick from Lowe found Gardner totally unmarked and he smashed home from 12 yards out to give Neil Aspin's side a deserved equaliser.” The Shaymen survived one final scare when a rare venture forward by the home side “saw them have their second goal of the game disallowed after an alleged foul in the area cancelled out Seb Carole's late winner.” The return match at The Shay, just two-anda-half weeks later, also ended one goal apiece in a match that provided the point for Town which mathematically secured their play-off place. For the second time in consecutive meetings, Town came from a goal behind to claim a point. The Shaymen went behind five minutes before half time after James Knowles chopped down Seb Carole in the area, the awarded penalty eventually, and emphatically, struck home by top goalscorer Josh Wilson. However, it only took Town three minutes to level the scores upon the resumption of play, as Lee Gregory furthered the run of scoring that has seen him skip to the top of the Shaymen scoring charts. Pete Taylor reported for the official website: “Scott McManus and Dan Gardner combined down the left wing and McManus' cross found the striker to stab home.” Since then, both sides have been preparing for the play-offs. According to Guiseley's official website, “Lions Manager Steve Kittrick said that his players were 'hurting' from Chester's title win.”

PLAY-OFF EDITION SPECIAL It was something that evidently spurred on the Yorkshire club when the top two met 17 days ago. Neil Young's title-winners were undone for just the second time in the league this year, as they were beaten 2-1 at Nethermoor. Guiseley apparently took their frustrations on finishing second out on Chester, something that “certainly showed in the way that the home side took the game to the visitors. The champions' defeat brought to an end the Cheshire club's run of eight straight wins and 30 unbeaten matches, though will it have helped Guiseley as the club look to build on last year's efforts, when they also missed out on the title.

The Lions finished as runners-up in the 201112 campaign, second to the title winners Hyde, though lost out in the play-off semifinals to the eventually-promoted Nuneaton Town. Even in their first year in the Blue Square North, Guiseley finished in the play-offs. It is something of a trend for the club, which, either in the Northern Premier or Blue Square North, has not finished lower than sixth since the 2005-2006 season. Having again guaranteed second place long ago, the Lions will be preparing for another shot at promotion via the play-offs, though the Shaymen will be putting all their effort into ensuring that, for a third year in succession, it does not happen. GUISELEY AFC

PLAYER PROFILES Steven Drench - Goalkeeper Schoolboy International keeper Steve began with Blackburn Rovers, and following a period on loan at Southport he eventually signed for the west coast side following his release from Ewood Park. He was an impressive performer as the Christie Park outfit fought their way to promotion via the play-offs, though he missed the Wembley final after being injured in a previous clash against York City. Having struggled to regain his first team place after the injury, he was loaned to Southport for the latter half of the 2007-08 season before joining the Sandgrounders on a permanent basis in the summer of 2008. Leaving on a free transfer, he eventually joined Cambridge United, whom he left in January 2009 before signing for Leigh Genesis, where he made 52 appearances over two seasons.

Steven Drench

One of a number of ‘keepers to try out for Guiseley in the 2010 pre-season following Jon Worsnop’s serious injury, Steve has gone on to make the Number 1 shirt his own, and his safe handling and superb distribution have become a vital part of the team’s impressive defensive record in their first two seasons in the Blue Square Bet North. Jacob Giles -Goalkeeper In the modern game, with multiple substitutes and the dismissal of goalkeepers for what can best be described as technical offences, the presence of two competent and reliable ‘last lines’ is a requirement of any squad. That means not only that one talented ‘keeper must be prepared to spend much of his time trailing round the country to spend ninety minutes on the bench; he must be physically and mentally attuned to don the gloves at a moment’s notice, often under stressful circumstances. That Steve Drench’s occasional absences last season were hardly noticed on the Lions’ journey to the BSN Runners-Up spot speaks volumes for the professionalism of Jacob Giles. Since beginning his career in his native Huddersfield, Jake has travelled widely in South Wales, the West Country and back in Yorkshire, cementing a reputation as a safe pair of hands in every sense of the phrase. His chance to establish himself as regular first choice at a high level will undoubtedly come - either at Nethermoor or elsewhere - and he will certainly have earned it.

Jacob Giles

Tom Stewart - Goalkeeper Earned inclusion in the 1st team squad after impressing in the Clubs Academy set up. A real prospect for the future. Previous Clubs: Halifax, Bradford City, Bradford Boys, WRCFA U-16s Mark Bower - Defender Mark is a very capable left-sided defender, learning his craft at Valley Parade at the shoulder of the vastly-experienced David Wetherall. He went on to captain City and made over 250 League appearances there and out on loan before moving on to Darlington. He arrived at Nethermoor from FC Halifax in the close season of 2011, and but for a lengthy absence through injury would have made an even greater contribution to the Lions’ success last term. Mark will also be taking on coaching responsibilities this season. After the departure of Simon Ainge on loan to Luton, Steve Kittrick has handed Mark the captain’s armband as he forges a new central defensive partnership with Danny Ellis. Danny Ellis - Defender Any ‘upwardly-mobile’ club seems to possess a stalwart who has survived and prospered throughout all the upheavals, and at Guiseley Danny Ellis is the prime candidate. An outstanding schoolboy footballer, representing West Yorkshire (and Bradford Boys when they won the English Cup) he was taken on by Bradford City in 2001. Four years later, without a Football League appearance, he arrived at Nethermoor (in Neil Parsley’s time as Manager) and the Lions’ fans immediately recognised a brave and consistent talent.

Mark Bower

In his seven seasons with the Lions he has been an integral part of all our successes and nearmisses, forming numerous central defensive partnerships, for the last couple of years with fellowCity old boy Simon Ainge, and most recently with former City captain Mark Bower. Danny’s contributions are mainly defensive of course - and over the years he has proved his mettle against some highly-rated strikers - but his rare goals are always greeted enthusiasically.

GUISELEY AFC

Andy McWilliams - Defender Signed in the summer of 2012 from Stalybridge Celtic, where he was highly regarded by both management and fans, Andy is a left-sided full back who despite his tender years has amassed a wealth of experience.

Danny Ellis

The boots of departed legend Dave Merris were always likely to be difficult to fill, but Andy has already gone much of the way to winning over the Guiseley supporters. He has proved himself quick and tenacious, possessing both the inclination and the ability to get forward and put opponents under pressure. Macaulay Parkinson - Defender The Lions’ conveyor belt of youth talent has proved less than prolific over recent years Craig Hall was the last player to rise through the ranks and hold down a regular first-team place - but that looks likely to change with the establishment of our Academy squad this season. Similarly, the club is keen to attract the best of local talent, and the signing of Macaulay Parkinson, barely sixteen years of age, looks to be a step in the right direction. Macaulay is an imposing and impressive defender who has already attracted much attention. He has played a productive part in the Lions’ pre-season programme, slotting effortlessly into defensive positions as a second-half substitute, and seems set to become an integral part of the squad this term. In January, Guiseley entered into a ‘dual registration’ arrangement with Evo-Stik Division One side Ossett Town, allowing Macaulay to gain some welcome open-age match experience while still available to the Lions if called upon.

Andy McWilliams

Andy Pearson - Defender Joining on a one-month loan from Hyde FC following the now-permanent departure of Simon Ainge to Luton Town, Andy is a versatile defender who will provide a quality defensive and midfield option as the Lions pursue their campaign for promotion to the Blue Square Premier. It was announced in November 2012 that Andy would be extending his loan spell until January, and it has now been agreed that he will see out the season with us. Rhys Meynell - Defender Rhys is a versatile midfielder and defender with a cultured left foot. He joined the Lions in the summer of 2012 from Stalybridge Celtic and has previously played for Barnsley, Chester City and Galway United Aaron Hardy - Defender A versatile full back who joined the Lions midway through the 2012/13 season, Aaron has quickly become a popular player with the Nethermoor faithful for his solid defensive displays, coupled with his marauding runs down the right flank. The 26-year-old lists FC Halifax Town, Bradford Park Avenue among his former clubs.

Macaulay Parkinson

Sean O’Reilly - Defender Sean, 23, is an Irish-American defender who signed for the club after having trained with the first team for a while and impressing. He has played at a good level in the USA with his last club being USL PDL club Northern Virginia Royals. He has also played at Saint Francis University, Pennsylvania and George Mason University, Virginia. He has made a handful of appearances for the first time during his time here and regularly writes blogs for the website on his experiences in the UK. Matt Wilson - Defender Matt rejoined Guiseley on 19th January 2013, having previously been at the club on loan from Alfreton in the second half of the 2011-12 season. Making 16 appearances (10 starts), and playing both in defence and midfield, he showed a determination and energy that immediately made him a hit with the fans, and even pitched in with three crucial goals.

Andy Pearson

GUISELEY AFC

PLAYER PROFILES Upon Matt’s release by Alfreton on 18th January 2013 Manager Steve Kittrick moved immediately to sign him, with news of his arrival being released less than 24 hours after his previous club announced they had released him. Andy Holdsworth - Midfielder Andy joined the Lions midway through the 2011-12 season from Alfreton Town. He plays equally well in midfield or at right back and can also weigh in with his fair share of goals. Andy is a former Huddersfield Town Captain and has also played for Oldham Athletic and Morecambe. Since the departure of Simon Ainge and the absence through injury of Mark Bower, ‘The Andy’ has also been performing creditably in the role of Captain. Chris Holland - Midfielder One-time Preston, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest (among others), midfielder Chris Holland joined the Lions in 2009, and for a season provided the Nethermoor fans with a masterclass in composure and incisive passing before his elevation to Assistant Manager.

Rhys Meynell

He possesses a wealth of knowledge, having played at most levels during his long career, and is renowned for his silky skills and cultured approach to playing football in what has been a brutal environment at times. This is Chris’s third season in the Guiseley dugout, and he has been known to make an appearance on the subs’ bench if needed. Danny Boshell - Midfielder Bradford-born Danny began his career with Oldham Athletic and spent six years at Boundary Park before finally leaving the club in 2005 after a loan spell at Bury, having turned out seventy times in the League for the Latics, scoring twice. He next signed for Stockport County and played thirty-three times in the League, scoring once before being released at the end of the 2005-06 season. He signed for Grimsby Town a couple of games into the following season following a preseason trial, spending four years at Blundell Park before signing for Chesterfield during 2009-10, though after appearing nine times in the closing stages Danny was released to join Guiseley. ‘Bosh’ is an assured passer who is composed on the ball and is unfailingly a calming influence in the Lions’ midfield.

Aaron Hardy

Gavin Rothery - Midfielder Leeds-born Gavin progressed through his home city club’s youth system and was named in the England U-19 squad in February 2006 before agreeing a one-year contract with United in 2007. Subsequently released in April 2008, he moved to York City, making three first team appearances before joining Harrogate Town in December 2008. Following a successful trial he joined Carlisle United in January 2009 and played six times for the first team, also spending a short time on loan at Barrow before being released in June 2010. Since joining Guiseley Gavin has become a key player for the Lions, scoring a goal every three games on average while providing creativity and skill from midfield or on the right.

Jack Rea - Midfielder Our fourth recruit from Stalybridge this term, Welsh Schoolboy International Jack was taken on as a Junior by Chester City, making a couple of senior appearances during the club’s final, turbulent season.

Sean O’Reilly

Upon their ultimate demise he moved across Cheshire to Staly, where he immediately became an integral part of ‘Project Celtic’. Jack’s first season at Bower Fold, 2010-11, saw him Hoover up all the available Player-of-the-Year awards and he followed it with another P-O-T-Y trophy the following year, during which he appeared in every game for the Celts, no mean achievement for a central midfielder. Jack had long been on the Lions’ wish list, but when he finally signed the clubs’ valuations were a long way apart and his transfer fee was eventually decided by an FA Tribunal.

GUISELEY AFC

Wayne Brooksby - Midfielder A live-wire winger full of pace and tricks, Wayne joined Guiseley in the 2012 close-season from North Ferriby United, having impressed on trial in pre-season. He has immediately made his mark from wide on the right, terrorising opposition defenders and contributing a significant number of goals as well as creating opportunities for team-mates. In November 2012, the club announced that Wayne had extended his contract in order to commit his medium-term future to Guiseley.

Matt Wilson

Zack Dale - Midfielder Zack joined the Lions as a 17 year-old in the summer of 2012 after impressing the management team during pre-season. He operates as a winger or an attacking central midfielder and is rated as a real prospect by Manager Steve Kittrick. Jake Lawlor - Midfielder Jake joined the Lions midway through the 2012/13 season from Harrogate Railway. An imposing central midfielder, who can also play at centre back, Jake impressed during a County Cup tie against the Lions while he also acquitted himself well during training. He has past experience at Manchester United, having been at Old Trafford as a youngster

Andy Holdsworth

Seb Carole - Midfielder Former Monaco, Brighton and Leeds United winger Seb joined the Lions in March 2013 on non-contract terms to help the push towards reaching the Blue Square Premier division. He was an immediate success in his first appearance, debuting as a substitute away to Gainsborough Trinity, creating one goal and scoring the other as Guiseley came from behind to take all three points. Paddy Mullen - Midfielder Doncaster youngster Paddy joins Guiseley as an exciting prospect in need of competitive football. Manager Steve Kittrick will be hoping that the pacey and tricky winger can provide some skill and cutting edge to the side during his time at Nethermoor. James Walshaw - Forward Technical competence is obviously the prime requisite of any good striker, but the best ones always seem to possess something extra, a sense of ‘devil’ bordering on arrogance. ‘Wally’ certainly has the competence, but his predilection for ‘getting in opponents’ faces’ makes him the type of player whose presence means defenders are unable to relax for a moment - and fans have a ready-made hero.

Andy Holdsworth

Having already acquired a reputation as a prolific - if somewhat maverick - finisher, Wally arrived at Nethermoor for the run-in of the 2008-09 season. He immediately established a striking partnership with James Hanson and Adam Muller that set the Lions on a tengame winning run to the Unibond Play-offs that ended only in a thrilling semi-final against Nantwich. The following season he really came into his own, 27 goals (13 of which were penalties, many awarded for lunges on him by frustrated defenders) spearheading Guiseley’s charge to the title. The rarefied air of the Conference North made little difference to his success, and his 32 goals in all competitions attracted attention from the full-time professionals. Conference Premier Darlington signed him (with the best wishes of all at Guiseley) but it proved a difficult season for them on and off the pitch and Wally quickly found himself back in the BSN, on loan to FC Halifax. However, Darlo’s financial implosion made him a free agent and he was soon back at Nethermoor, announcing his arrival with a seven-minute hat trick off the bench that turned a 0-3 deficit against Droylsden into a 4-3 win. As someone once said of Ian Botham, “Who writes his scripts?”…

Danny Boshell

GUISELEY AFC

PLAYER PROFILES Josh Wilson - Forward Josh joined Guiseley at the beginning of the 2012-13 season following a breakthrough year at Vauxhall Motors that saw him convert from a midfield player to a striker, net 19 goals in 37 games and earn a call-up to the England ‘C’ squad. Kevin Holsgrove - Forward Much-travelled for a player who is still young, Kevin joined Guiseley from Colwyn Bay after impressing manager Steve Kittrick in a match between the sides early in the 2012-13 season. Strong, quick and with a keen eye for goal, Holsgrove had scored four goals after just eight starts for the club, even while being rotated with three other in-form strikers for the starting positions.

Gavin Rothery

Zack Dale

Luke Robinson - Forward Leeds-born Robinson was one of the first players from the Academy squad to feature in the Guiseley first team, scoring on his debut after coming on a substitute in a West Riding County Cup match against Bradford Park Avenue. Having spent time at Sheffield Wednesday and Harrogate Town, Luke continues his development with the Academy side this season and will be hoping to be called upon for first team action again as the Blue Square North campaign progresses. Nicky Boshell - Forward The younger brother of Danny, Nicky spent his early days in football with Huddersfield Town before drifting into a round of the local non-League clubs, steadily building himself a reputation as a hardworking wide midfield player/striker possessing a particular talent with set pieces. The Lions originally showed an interest in him in his days at Brighouse, but at the time he felt the jump from NCEL to Conference North could prove too great and instead accepted an offer from Evo-Stik Premier Bradford.

Jack Rea

James Walshaw

A hat-trick in one of his early games must have done his confidence no harm, and he went on to play a major part in Avenue’s march to the play-offs, where they finally achieved promotion with an extra-time win over their old rivals FCUM. Nicky also turned out at Valley Parade in Guiseley’s late win in the West Riding Cup Final. The summer of 2012 saw him finally make the switch to Nethermoor, and it was hat-trick time again in Guiseley’s first pre-season game, an 8-0 coast past Nostell MW. Similarly, his double strike in the opening BSN fixture at Histon established one thing; the Lions have finally signed the goalscoring Boshell brother!

Josh Wilson

Phil Marsh - Forward Twenty-six-year-old striker Phil moved to Nethermoor following his departure from Forest Green Rovers midway through the 2012/13 season, having been a target for boss Steve Kittrick for a number of seasons.

Wayne Brooksby

A prolific striker at this level, Phil began his career at Manchester United before moving on to play for FC United of Manchester, Stalybridge Celtic, Forest Green Rovers and Hereford United.

GUISELEY AFC

HISTORY Founded in 1909 by a local group of enthusiasts the clubs first success came in 1913 when they won the local Wharfedale League.Following the end of the First World War the club switched to the Leeds League achieving little success until 1924 when another switch,to the West Riding County Amateur League, eventually brought success.A treble of league championships in the 1930's plus two appearances in the last 16 of the old F.A. Amateur Cup, against South Bank in 1932 ,and Cambridge Town (now City) in 1934. Another league title was gained in 1939 after which seventeen years were to elapse before the fifth title was achieved in 1956.This marked another switch to the West Yorkshire League, which heralded a remarkable run of success in the local Wharfedale Challenge Cup ,winning the trophy on nine out of ten occasions during the1960's. Higher status was gained in 1968 with club entering the Yorkshire League and after moderate success the 2nd Division championship was attained in 1976.Promotion to the First Division followed ,with a runners-up position being achieved in l980 along with a League Cup success over champions,Emley.Success was also achieved in the West Riding County Cup with a hat-trick of trophies being won in1979/80/81.1981 also saw the club have its fisrt taste of F.A.Vase mania, reaching the quarter-finals before losing at home to eventual finalists,Willenhall Town. Following the set-up of the pyramid system in non-league football in 1982,the Yorkshire League merged with the Midland League to form the Northern Counties East League with Guiseley being placed in the Premier Division at its inception. Moderate progress was again made with third place being achieved in 1985 and again in 1986.Off the field, installation of floodlights in 1988, enabled the club to set its sights on achieving higher status. The 1989/90 season proved to be

GUISELEY AFC

the springboard for a very successful period for the club, with the signing of the former England international,Frank Worthington plus a first F.A.Vase Semi-Final appearance. Defeat against rivals Bridlington Town was soon forgotten as the following season saw the club go one better by not only reaching the famous Wembley twin towers but also featuring in a never to forgotten 4-4 draw with Gresley Rovers.Eventually the trophy was won three days later with a 3-1 replay victory at Bramall Lane, Sheffield. Further success was also achieved that season with a League and Cup double together with promotion to the Northern Premier League. Another milestone in the clubs history was reached in 1991 with the 1st Round of the F.A.Cup being reached for the first time, losing 0-1 away to Chester City at their temporary home at the time,Macclesfield. A further visit to Wembley in the F.A.Vase sadly saw the trophy relinquished to Dorset side,Wimborne Town in another eight goal epic, losing 3-5. Good progress was made in the N.P.L. with 4th place being achieved in the first two campaigns together with the First Division Cup being lifted in 1993. Under the guidance of Ray McHale, 1993/94 proved to be another exceptional season with the First Division title being won and along with it , promotion to the Premier Division. A greater feat was to reach the semi-finals of the F.A.Challenge Trophy against Runcorn (then a Conference side), when a stoppage time goal in extra time of the 2nd leg cruelly robbed the club of a third Wembley appearance in four years.Consolation was gained by becoming the 1st First Division side to lift the N.P.L. President's Cup,defeating Leek Town over two legs. Elevation to the Premier Division saw the club gain a record breaking 93 points third position in its first campaign, as well as

GUISELEY AFC

HISTORY continued... reaching the 1st round of the F.A.Cup ,where a home tie against Carlisle United, switched to Valley Parade, produced a club attendance record of 6,548. The latter half of the 1990's had been something of an anti-climax with just the West Riding County Cup being won in l996 and two N.P.L. President's Cup final defeats in 1996 and 1998. Following the appointment of Bobby Davison as Player/Manager during the second half of the 1997/98 season a fresh impetus was given to the side as a number of the clubs promising young reserve side players were blooded into the squad. A very creditable third place in the Premier Division of the Unibond League was achieved at the end of the 1998/99 season as well as reaching the final of the League Challenge Cup for the first time Sadly fortunes took an unexpected turn for the worse the following season with relegation being suffered for the first time in the club's NPL membership which resulted in Davison being replaced by his assistant,Neil Parsley. In 2002/03 an excellent FA Cup run was enjoyed, when, despite languishing at the foot of the table, a fourth appearance in the First Round proper of the competition was achieved with a visit to Second Division,Luton Town. Although suffering a 0-4 defeat, the cup run boosted the clubs finances as well as providing some memorable matches, notably the 3-2 replay victory at Tamworth. Season 2004-05 saw the club back in the Premier Division as a result of the restructuring of non-league football and saw the club gain its first piece of silverware of the new millenium with the West Riding County Cup being won. During November 2006 former Bradford City boss Terry Dolan came in as manager and the Unibond League Chairman's Cup was won.

GUISELEY AFC

Off the field the club saw the tie up of local junior clubs bear fruition, with charter status to the FA community club status being achieved during early 2005. As a result of this, a new floodlit third generation surface all weather training area to replace the old tennis court area at the ground was opened in September 2006 The appointment of Steve Kittrick saw succession of Promotion near misses followed, with the highlight in 2008-2009 being success for the 1st time in the Unibond Challenge Cup with a 3-2 extra time victory over Ilkeston Town. The goal of promotion again being missed with a Play off Semi Final defeat at Nantwich. The Clubs Centenary season saw massive ground developments with new seated stand, lights and terracing installed. On the pitch a heart stopping last few weeks finally saw promotion achieved as Champions on the final day. The first ever Conference North Season proved to be one of the most successful in the Clubs History with success in the FA Cup where the 1st Round was once again reached, the FA Trophy, where only a 01defeat to Luton Town prevented a Semi Final position and in the League where eventual heartbreak occurred in the last seconds of the Promotion Final play off at a packed AFC Telford United, 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go, losing 2-3 in the 3rd minute of added time. The West Riding County Cup was lifted again to provide some solace. 2011- 2012 was another successful season with the team finishing as Runners Up in the Conference Nth, ( its highest ever league position ) followed by another Play Off defeat. The West Riding County Cup was retained ,a second seated stand built, and further ground development took place, as the Club continues to strive for further elevation in the Football pyramid.

FC HalifaxTown 0 No Win In Six, But Now It's The Lottery FC Halifax Town were defeated 1-0 by ten-man Stalybridge Celtic at Bower Fold on the last day of the domestic season ahead of their play-off semi-final first leg clash with Guiseley, who also tasted a final day defeat. Mitchell Austin fired past Phil Senior, who was making his first league appearance of the season, in the Town goal on 30 minutes despite the home side being reduced to ten men when Callum

Warburton was sent off for a high challenge on Osebi Abadaki. Town had plenty of possession, and corners, but could not find a way past makeshift Stalybridge goalkeeper, Jordan Barrow, who was deputising in goal as both of their first-team stoppers were injured. Barrow, a tough-tackling defensive midfielder by trade, denied Gareth Seddon at his near post at the end of the first half, before diving through the air to claw away a Sean Williams thunderbolt just after the restart. Chris Worsley went close twice late on in the second half after arriving late at the far post with a diving header and scuffing a shot at goal following a speedy counter-attack. Adam Jackson almost found the equaliser when he volleyed over the crossbar from a Williams corner late on but Stalybridge, who defended expertly throughout the contest, ended their season on a high with a home victory. The loss for Town meant they finished fifth in the Blue Square Bet North table with 75 points, to set up two mouthwatering semi-final legs with local rivals Guiseley, who suffered a surprising 2-4 home defeat at the hands of rock-bottom Hinckley.

FC HalifaxTown

WEB NEWS Welcome to this Blue Square North playoff semi-final first leg match between FC Halifax Town and Guiseley. Whatever happens over tonights and Saturday's playoff games; this will be the final home game of the 2012/13 season. The winners of this tie will face an away tie to either Brackley Town or Altrincham on Sunday 12th May. Therefore it is customary for the end of season thank you's and I will start with the outgoing Huddersfield of University students. We will be saying farewell to Joe Smith, Liam Norcliffe, Mark Ridgway, Alan Dale, Alex Bradin, Peter Taylor and Lewis WoodThompson after the West Riding County Cup final in a couple of weeks. They have all worked extremely hard over the course of the season and we have been delighted with their input in their own ways. As part of their time here they have all done a range of activities including filming, audio commentary, TV commentary, written work and photography Last week all their placement work was handed in as part of their portfolios and they await now their final results. I don't envy the tutors who have to watch the amount of video they have done during the course of the year! It's been one of the hardest years in terms of commitment from the lads this season with over 60 games to cover including a couple of really long trips midweek to Dartford and Oxford. Both were over 15 hour trips, so their commitment to help was very much appreciated. My sincere thanks to all seven of the lads, it has been a pleasure to work with all and I wish you well for the future. Also thank you to Matthew Shaw who has now been with us for nearly 18 months now. Matthew has just finished his second year at the University of Huddersfield. We have agreed following discussions with the University that he won't be offered a placement for next season and he will be going elsewhere. However we are hoping that he will remain with us

FC HalifaxTown

WITH KELLY GILCHRIST

if his placement allows him to be. Thank you also to Adam Cheshire, who has continued to assist with the official website and Shaymen Player. He has made the majority games apart from him missing some of the longer trips this season in Dartford, Oxford and Colwyn Bay and the West Riding County Cup games. As well as the media team, we are assisted by a number of other people. First of these I would like to thank Chairman David Bosomworth, who has continued to be really supportive of what we are doing with the media output at the Club. Also we would like to thank Bobby Ham, Stuart Peacock, Pete Stajic, Nigel Walker, Hayley Horne, Neil Aspin, Lee Nogan and the whole of the playing squad over the season. Without the help of those at the Club, we could not achieve what we do with the coverage. As we say farewell to the lads, we will be welcoming the next crop of students for next season. We are delighted to welcome Ben Manning, Will Jeavons, Nick Bollen, Ross Perkins, Callum Jones, Aaron Crosbie, Danny Timms and Josh Lawson for next season. They have all been really impressed with what we are prepared to offer and we are confident that they will continue to improve the service going forward. We will be working on new ideas over the summer at the same time as recharging the batteries and we will be all ready to go again in pre-season. However in the meantime, we have at least one more play-off game, hopefully the final and also the West Riding County Cup. As always if you have any comments regarding the official website or Matchday programme, please feel free to email yourviews@halifaxafc.co.uk

SUPPORTERS CLUB A tense and exciting encounter is surely guaranteed this evening as local rivals Guiseley arrive here at the Shay for the first leg of two eagerly anticipated Blue Square North fixtures, each team firmly focused on progressing to the promotion decider against either Altrincham or Brackley. The mechanics of the play-off system does mean, of course, that this will be the last game at the Shay in 2012/13 and, on behalf of the Supporters Club Committee, I would like therefore to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who has contributed to the various fund raising initiatives and/or attended Race Nights, Open to Question evenings, etc. This is appreciated and we sincerely hope that all existing members will renew their subscriptions for 2013/14. Can I make a special reference at this point to Supporters Club Members Chris Neatby and Stuart Jeffreys who have both worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist the Committee and

our Football Club. Thank you Chris and Stuart from all involved at FC Halifax Town. To really maximise the potential of the Supporters Club, it is vital moving forward that we attract more Committee members. Currently numbers are relatively low at just six and this understandably impacts on what can be planned and achieved. It is vital that we resolve this situation and, if you are interested, please, please, please (!) contact any Committee member or e-mail supportersclub@halifaxafc.co.uk Finally, best wishes to Danny and his team as this season draws to an exciting conclusion. What a wonderful achievement it would be if our Club were to obtain its third promotion in just five years. Up the Shaymen. Roger Bottomley

2012-13 SEASON REVIEW …WITH DAN GARDNER The naturally-gifted Dan Gardner shares his thoughts on a season which, on a personal level, commenced frustratingly on the sidelines after suffering a painful knee injury in a summer friendly. He returned in late October before going onto score 12 goals in all competitions to help fire the Shaymen into the play-offs. Game of the Season: For a good reason I'll say Corby away because it was a great result and a great team performance. For me, Dartford away was a good game to play in, but obviously we didn't get the right result. Player of the Season: It's a toss up between Lee Gregory and Danny Lowe. Both have been class all season. One has scored goals and the other has prevented goals from being conceded. Danny has been a rock at the back and until the final week of the season he had played in every minute of every match. Goal of the Season: If I could give it myself for the goal away at Dartford then I would but I'm not like that. Lee Gregory scored a great goal to be fair when the ball came over and he took a Drogba-esque touch on the side of

FC HalifaxTown

his foot and slotted it in nicely. I think that was against Altrincham in the FA Trophy. Toughest Opponents: I've not played against Chester this season but they are the best team that I have watched. The toughest opponents I have played against this season would be Stalybridge Celtic. It might just have been because we were playing the game at Rochdale's stadium but it seemed a hard game to play in as you didn't get much time on the ball. Most memorable off-field moment: Only last week, me and Sedds did a scene for Nike and we got a few tops signed by Danny Welbeck. That was quality. Most embarrassing or funniest moment: When I tripped over the ball against Guiseley at The Shay and I ended up doing a rolypoly! Thoughts ahead of the play-offs: We've just got to go into it and give 110% effort and work-rate. With the class that we have got in the side we should do well. 2012-13 SEASON REVIEW …WITH LEE GREGORY

FC HalifaxTown

FC Halifax Town's top goalscorer, Lee Gregory, reflects on a season which could still yet lead to promotion to the Conference Premier… Game of the season: When we beat Altrincham in the FA Trophy 5-2, we were on top constantly for 90 minutes. Sedds broke some kind of record with that quick hat-trick which was class. We were passing it round playing from the back and scored a hat full. Player of the season: Two for me, Danny Lowe is Mr Consistent and never lets anything go. He has an engine, he is quick, strong and wants to win everything. Every week you know you can count on him, he is never going to have a bad game. Dan Gardner has been a class act and is one of the best players in the league, never mind just our side; he is a game changer, simple as that. Goal of the season: It has to be Dan Gardner at Dartford. It was class. He just picked it up 25 yards out and powered it in off the post, incredible. Toughest opponents: I'll give it to Chester because they are so strong all over the pitch. They got to the first and second ball all the time. When we played them every time it was a high tempo and they were so quick going forward. You lose the ball and they instantly have four strikers bombing on.

up nicely and then I ran in and put it away. Best away game: Yet to come in the playoff final. Worst away day: Dartford away! It was terrible having meals on the coach. It was a long trip, it took all day. Best ground visited: Chester because the atmosphere was class, there were loads of fans and the fans were so good. Worst ground visited: For me it has to be Boston. I really don’t like going there. It isn't that close, it's always seems to be a windy ground and on the last two occasions the pitch has been rock-hard and babbly. Thoughts ahead of the play-offs: We hope we are going to win. The lads are confident going into Guiseley and if luck is on our side then we'll do alright. Lee Gregory was talking to Mark Ridgway

2012-13 SEASON REVIEW …WITH MATTY GLENNON FC Halifax Town's number 1, Matty Glennon, looks back on a season which has seen the Shaymen record the overall best defensive team statistics away from home in the Blue Square Bet North…

Most memorable off-field moment: Just getting Danny Lowe to buy everything and just winding him up for fun

Game of the season: Beating Chester FC in the FA Cup replay

Most embarrassing or funniest moment this year: Some of our shooting from distance and our inability to score from corners!

Player of the season: Danny Lowe for just being there consistently throughout the whole season. He's done very well…and I can't vote for myself!

Toughest individual opponent: Probably the captain for Chester FC, George Horan, as he is one of the toughest opponents you will play against. He never loses a header.

Goal of the season: We have scored a couple of good team goals. We scored a couple against Boston United. That is a hard question; we have scored a couple of screamers, Worthington has scored a few worldies this season but I'm going to go for Dan Gardner's great strike against Dartford.

Best personal achievement this year: However many clean sheets that I have kept; what has it been, 20 odd clean sheets? That's got to be it I think

Toughest opponents: Altrincham, because they beat us twice this season Most memorable on-field moment: It's got to be the FA Cup tie against Lincoln at their place. I thought we did really well; we played fantastic football against higher league opposition

Best away ground visited: This season I am going to go for Histon. It's a tidy little ground and it was quite a nice surprise actually and they had a good pitch as well Worst game this year: Mine was probably the first half against Chester last week; I skanked my way through everything. As a team I'm going to say the Altrincham game at home in the league because we conceded four Matty Glennon was talking to Alex Bradin

ON REFLECTION …WITH LEE GREGORY The Shaymen Shout couldn't get enough of Town's top goalscorer Lee Gregory for this special Play-Off Semi-Final first leg edition versus Guiseley. And why not? He's bagged another twenty plus goals for himself this season and, don't forget, it was he who singlehandedly gave the Shaymen a fighting chance in last season's play-off semi with Gainsborough Trinity. Here, he reflects on those two goals in the first leg at the Northolme and how he dreams of scoring more important goals as this campaign draws to a thrilling conclusion…

goalkeeper went to clear it and it landed to me nicely for a nice easy goal for me! But you've got to be there to score them.”

Q. First of all Lee, what do you remember about last season's play-off exploits and, ultimately, defeat at the semi-final stage against Gainsborough?

Q. Well that leads me onto the next stat: Lee Gregory has only scored in ten league games this season, yet has scored twenty league goals. And when he does score in the league, FC Halifax Town do not lose. These play-offs are crying out for a Lee Gregory goal, aren't they?

“I remember that we just did not perform in the second leg. That's what needs to change this season. That's what we need to do. We need to perform at home and away in the semis. After going 2-0 down at Gainsborough we performed well, and that was the harder game. They then just sat back at our ground and invited us to play. But we couldn't break them down and we couldn't get the ball into the back of the net.” Q. We certainly gave ourselves a mounting to climb right from the off in that first leg in Lincolnshire, didn't we? “We certainly did. We started very slowly in the first leg. We underestimated them as a team. We know that in the semis this season against Guiseley we have to start well.” Q. You got us back into the game though with a goal either side of half-time to put the game back in the balance. How important were those goals at the time?

Q. Twenty-two goals last season, twenty three to your name this time around; you must be happy with that? “Are there any managers reading this?! I think it's a pretty good stat to be honest, to be hitting twenty plus goals in consecutive seasons, I'll take that! If I don't score the Gaffer has a moan at me! But rightly so!”

“Well firstly, that just shows that I should be scoring in more games, shouldn't I? But before the Guiseley game a week or so ago the stat read that I had scored in 9 league games and we had always won! But, of course, the way to put it now is when I score, we don't lose! That's the way to put it! A Lee Gregory goal in both the semis and the final is what I'm aiming for now! Why not?” Q. What needs to change to ensure we don't suffer play-off heartache again? “Well, we'll be going to go out and we'll play at a high tempo. I think we can beat anyone on our day. We know what we have to do in these playoffs. We are all good teams but we know that we have to perform on the night. That is the key. People say that the play-offs are a lottery but I believe in this: the harder you work, the more you get out of the game.”

“Overall they weren't that important as we didn't get through, did we? But if I hadn't have scored those two goals though we'd have gone into the home tie 2-0 down, so they were crucial at the time.”

Q. From an individual point of view, I bet you can't wait to get out there after being rested for the past three league games, can you?

Q. What do you remember about your two goals on that night?

“Look, I want to play in every game. It's the Gaffer's decision. But I'm ready for Tuesday night and I'm ready to do my talking on the pitch. I'm buzzing to be honest. I want that winning feeling.”

“I've slept since then! I'll be honest and say that I don't remember the first one but I remember the second one because the

MEMORABLE PLAY-OFF MATCHES Whilst the Shaymen prepare for their second successive year in the Blue Square Bet North play-offs, the Shaymen Shout's Liam Norcliffe takes time out to open the history books and look at some memorable play-off clashes over the years‌ Sheffield United 4 v 3 Nottingham Forest (5-4 aggregate) May 2003 Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United headed into the second leg of this remarkable Division One play-off with the scores level after a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. Paul Hart's team looked to have booked their place in the final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when David Johnson and Andy Reid put them 2-0 up before the hour. However, goals from Steve Kabba and Michael Brown drew the Blades level at 2-2. Two further goal in extra-time from substitute, Paul Peschisolido, and an own goal from former Sheffield Wednesday defender, Des Walker put the South Yorkshire side 4-2 up. A Robert Page own goal gave Forest a glimmer a hope but Neil Warnock's team held on to record an unbelievable comeback. It was all for nothing in the end though as Wolves scored three first-half goals in the final to seal their promotion to the top flight. Charlton Athletic 4 v 4 Sunderland (AET Charlton won 8-7 on penalties) May 1998 Charlton Athletic and Sunderland played out a Division One play-off final at Wembley which is regarded as the best ever. Sunderland's Michael Gray missed the decisive penalty to send the Addicks up with Clive Mendonca, a Sunderland fan, scoring a hat-trick for Charlton, the first ever in a playoff final. Mendonca's first gave Charlton the lead before Niall Quinn equalised for the Black Cats five minutes after the break. Kevin Philips then gave Sunderland the lead with his 35th goal of the season which broke a Club record set by Brian Clough. Mendonca grabbed the equaliser

FC HalifaxTown

for Alan Curbishley's side but it didn't last for long as Quinn then fired in his second from a Lee Clark cross. Unlikely scorer, Richard Rufus, scored his first goal for the Club to make it 3-3. Sunderland must have thought that there was no way back for Athletic this time when Nicky Summerbee put them 4-3 in front in extratime. The goals did not stop there, however, and Mendonca completed his triple in the last minute of the first period of extra-time. The excitement continued but it was misery for the Sunderland fans as Gray stepped up in the shoot-out but his penalty was saved by Sasa Ilic meaning that despite leading 2-1, 32 and 4-3 in the game, it was actually Charlton who were heading for the Premiership. Manchester City 2 v 2 Gillingham (AET – City win 3-1 on penalties) May 1999 Manchester City enjoy leaving it late as we saw last season when they won the Premier League title with the last kick of the game. With City 2-0 behind heading into injury-time, after conceding goals by Carl Asaba on 81 minutes and Bob Taylor five minutes later, not many would have given them hope against a Gillingham team managed by Tony Pulis. Kevin Horlock scored with just one minute remaining before Paul Dickov hit the back of the net with just seconds left of the five minutes of added time. Dickov missed his spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out but City goalkeeper, Nicky Weaver, was the hero of the day when he stopped penalties from Paul Smith and Guy Butters to send the blue half of Manchester into raptures and into Division One. Will there be drama for the Shaymen in what promises to be two cracking semi-final ties with neighbours Guiseley? Liam Norcliffe

FC HalifaxTown

Members of the FC Halifax Town Media Team, class of 2013, take some time to reflect on this season's escapades, which have included great runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy, recordbreaking hat-tricks, nudity, social-media banter, hilarity on away coach trips, great goals, a Captain Fantastic and much, much more. Oh, and the chance of promotion via the Blue Square Bet North Play-offs. The Shaymen Shout's very own Adam Cheshire posed the questions… What was your main role at the Club this season? Kelly Gilchrist, 33: Official Website co-ordinator Mark Ridgway, 21: Generally media bits and bobs throughout the season, but mainly commentary, providing the Shaymen Player's Scouse voice. Peter Taylor, 20: Cameraman/Updater Joe Smith, 21: Mark and cameraman's valet to The Shay every week Liam Norcliffe, 21: Conducting match reports, live updates and post-match interviews How much have you enjoyed being a part of the FCHT Media Team this season? Kelly: Really enjoyed this year working with a great bunch of lads. Would be great to finish off the season with play-off success Mark: I've enjoyed it a lot. We've always had a good laugh and done a good job. The away game coaches were quality banter and we've visited some decent stadiums along the way...and some less so! Pete: Very much, it has given me a lot of experience, which is what I needed and I had fun as I went along Joe: As much as monks like Mars Bars (if you've seen the advert, they really like them!) Liam: The placement at FC Halifax Town is one I would recommend to any trainee sports journalist who wants to improve their skills as a multi-media journalist What strengths and attributes did you bring to the FCHT Media/Shaymen Player team?

Kelly: Organisation, hard working, knowledgeable and the drive to continue to push the team forward Mark: I think I brought passion to the commentary, not quite on Chesh's scale, but not bad for a nonHalifax fan before the start of the project! Pete: I am good with a camera and the editing side of things Joe: I've already said, I bring Mark and cameraman to The Shay every week. Oh, you asked for strengths. Erm... Liam: Punctuation and organisation, variety and creativity for Shaymen Shout matchday programme and ability to finish match reports on the full-time whistle. That's a hard task you know! Which FC Halifax Town player would you compare yourself to and why? Kelly: Liam Needham, as I'm in the background running the engine room of the team Pete: It's Liam Needham for me too as I am more of a quiet person, however I am always willing to talk to people and have a laugh…although I do not possess his footballing ability! Liam: And it's the same for me too because I was the hard man of the team, I was always taken to potential troublesome Tuesday night matches in case things got out of hand; he's from Sheffield, so am I, he loves a beer, so do I! Mark: Sean Williams. Firstly there is the Scouse connection and Sean is always involved in the banter having a laugh, but not as loud as some Joe: Phil Senior – I spent my entire college football career as the Number 2 goalkeeper What is your favourite FCHT game of the season and why? Kelly: Altrincham at home in the FA Trophy with the Gareth Seddon hat-trick just before the break Mark: I'd say in terms of a spectacle the first Chester away game. It was the two 'big teams' going head to head and it was probably one of the best performances I've seen Halifax produce. It was end

to end all the time, and Halifax were extremely unfortunate to lose the game Pete: That's a tough question but I will have to go for the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round replay at home to Chester. The atmosphere generated by the fans and the quality of football on the pitch made it a fantastic game. Joe: Brackley Town away – the chairwoman lady let us walk across the pitch. We're not allowed to do that at The Shay. Liam: Lincoln City away in the FA Cup because it was one of the best 0-0 draws I have seen, we should have won, the whole day ran smoothly and it wasn't too far to travel What is your Goal of the Season and why? Kelly: Liam Needham's opening goal of the game at Gloucester. Not only was it a stunning goal but I had predicted a 2-1 win that night with Liam to score first! Mark: Dan Gardner vs Dartford – an unbelievable goal, the drop of the shoulder sets it perfectly and what a strike in off the post from 25 yards or so. I was on TV commentary at the time and probably got a few looks as I shouted in the cramped press area! Pete: I'm with Mark on this! It was a very spectacular goal in a very thrilling match. One he should be proud of despite the final result. Joe: Definitely Robin van Persie's volley versus Aston Villa. Oh, do you mean at The Shay? In that case, there was a pretty special one the other week when that kid whacked the ball into the top corner from range in the half time five-a-side match. Liam: Lee Gregory's lob away at Corby from the edge of the box Who is your player of the season and why? Kelly: Danny Lowe has led by example as Captain and he has had a superb season Mark: Agree! Whilst the strikers have been taking

it in turns to steal the headlines it has been Danny who has been the most consistent performer. He never puts a foot wrong at the back, he's a class act, but it's just a shame he can't score! Pete: Yes, Captain Danny Lowe gives 110% in every game and is Mr Consistent for me; a fantastic player who does exactly what you what him to Joe: Jason St Juste! Out of pity! Had a fantastic start to the campaign but unfortunately not seen the best of him after his operation Liam: Liam Hogan for me because of the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch. He has been consistent throughout and I've never seen an attacker dominant him this season What is your funniest moment of the season? Kelly: Vauxhall Motors away when Freddy the Fox brought me a coffee after my plea that it was cold on the Match Updates. The look on your face Chesh was so funny. Also at the same game, the Gareth Seddon incident in the Neil Aspin interview had to have some very creative editing for that one! Mark: His antics were hilarious! “Tell them how big I am Gaffer!” Pete: Yes, Sedds in the background of Neil Aspin's interview away to Vauxhall Motors was quite something! Joe: “ETA, Paul?” Ian Helliwell asking Paul the bus driver when we shall be arriving at our destination. Average number of times asked per away trip: roughly 5,000. Liam: Being in the company of Jason St Juste; his penalty miss versus Solihull was amazing, he buys cakes off Julia for £15, he's always late, he's always happy but he is my hero! Following on from the Shaymen Shout's exclusive investigation last week, who do you think is behind the parody Twitter account @NotNeilAspin?

Pete: Jamie Vardy flooring Helli as he ran around the pitch, plus Helli's comments afterwards! Joe: Speeding past Neil Aspin in my 12-year-old Nissan Micra on the A629 dual carriageway, coming out of Halifax. Liam: Listening to Gareth Seddon's life stories on the coach back from Worcester! He spoke for three hours solid with a rum and coke in his hand What is your most memorable Shaymen Player moment/footage of the season? Kelly: As already mentioned, Gareth Seddon at Vauxhall Motors Pete: Gareth Seddon's three minute hat-trick at home against Altrincham. Mark: I shocked myself when I realised how passionate I got when Sedds netted that hattrick…but it was a record-breaker! Joe: Mark's audio description of one of the Shaymen's opponents: “They're attacking like angry beavers!” Liam: Matt Shaw screaming when Gregory scored v Guiseley to cement play-off place…decibels louder than in the Velodrome Why should fans sign up to Shaymen Player? Kelly: You get Commentary, highlights, exclusive interviews from every single FC Halifax Town game, it is a great service and with all the fans' support we can continue to improve. Mark: It is constantly being improved, with the new feature videos being a big hit, the lads put a lot of effort into them and I'm sure next year's lot will too. The commentary will only improve, especially if we are promoted, whilst most Football League clubs won't even provide 2 plus post-match interviews. We do three…! Pete: It gives access to what goes on behind the scenes at the club. It's an invaluable service Joe: Fans should sign up to hear more animal metaphors, describing proceedings. For example: “The striker is busily scurrying around like a

Kelly: Nigel Walker Mark: It has to be Sedds, the centre of the FCHT banter. The culprit knows too much, so it must be a player and he has to be the number one suspect Pete: It could be absolutely anyone but something tells me it that Seddon may be behind it Liam: Gareth Seddon for me too! Joe: Barry Manilow? What is your most memorable on-field moment of the season? Kelly: Sedds' record-breaking hat-trick against Altrincham Mark: I'll stay with Sedds in the FA Trophy but I'm thinking of the next round against Maidstone. When we were drawing 1-1, thoughts of a horror Tuesday night replay down there were setting in. Thankfully Sedds, who was miles offside, scored in injury time to the delight of the Media Team and everyone in the stadium Pete: Yes, his goal late on to cancel out a potential replay was brilliant. Ridgway's commentary also made that incredible! Joe: Helping Matthew Shaw film the introduction to the match highlights in front of the tunnel as the players came out for Shaymen Player for the match versus Guiseley. It's the only on-field action I've had at The Shay. Liam: Again, that St Juste penalty miss versus Solihull Moors What is your most memorable off-field moment of the season? Kelly: Working at Lincoln City; great ground and they were really helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed Mark: Mine and Chesh's commentary for the Chester game last week. End of season syndrome had set in and our relaxed style wasn't to my cameraman Alan Dale's taste as he constantly berated us throughout the 90 minutes, but as always we did a professional job!

FCHT Media Team Season Evaluation 2012-13 (Sheffield Wednesday) but I have to admit, I am! And finally, please sum up this season? Kelly: Stop start, stop start. It's been frustrating with all the games off but it has the capability of being a great season‌ Mark: This season has been a great laugh, travelling the length of the 'north' each week and usually watching Halifax win. The coach trips have been a great laugh, often having a few beers...Chesh even bought them for Gloucester away! On the pitch it has been great considering the pitch problems. After first place the play-offs were always the target and there have been some quality performances along the way Pete: On an individual note, I have really enjoyed it, I've loved getting to know everyone, having a laugh and a bit of banter with everyone and it's been brilliant chatting to the players and getting to know their backgrounds, so it hasn't all been just about football. As a team Town have done brilliantly considering a horrible winter, but even with that dreadful backlog of fixtures they managed to secure that play-off place, so I think we can all be proud of how well have done. As for the media team, I personally think we are brilliant and should give ourselves a good pat on the back for all the hard work that has been done. Liam: The season has been a monumental effort from everybody associated with the Club. The first half of the season was frustrating because of the adverse weather conditions but it couldn't be helped. The second half has been a bit of a blur with the number of games but nobody will care if the Shaymen can get over the line. Joe: Erm, 124.76? Chesh: Many thanks fellow Media Team members (or Inbetweeners as we're called by Matty Glennon)! Another great effort this season. Let's hope the players' efforts on the pitch are rewarded with a third promotion in four years for Neil Aspin and co

squirrel hungry for nuts. Liam: Because it will only get better, year after year. And simply, it is the only place to view every FC Halifax Town goal. In terms of the last few weeks, with the games coming thick and fast, how hard has it been for the Media Team/ and on an individual level to cope with the fixture congestion? Kelly: It's been very difficult in making sure we have had enough cover on the different nights. It's been very tiring but if we can secure promotion, it will be worth all the effort Mark: It felt, at times, like we might as well take a sleeping bag to The Shay. It was our second home! Pete: It's been a bit of a struggle but luckily there hasn't been much work to do until this week. I think we managed well though, even with a few technical breakdowns involving the cameras, but as a team we did very well. On an individual level however, it made me very tired, but then again, I am a generally tired person. Joe: *Same answer as for the next question. Liam: Everybody has stuck together and helped each other out so it wasn't that hard How are your nerves going into the play-offs? Kelly: They're fine at the moment, not really had time to think about them with all these league games to cover Mark: I always find it hard to not be positive and every time I see Town play I think they'll win. Obviously they will be tough games, but there is nobody I've seen who we should be scared of. Pete: I am quite nervous but I think we are all nervous after such a long season, but I believe we have the quality to go up with Chester. Joe: Pretty good actually, I've had the girlfriend whip up some special brownies Liam: Never thought I could get excited about a set of matches that does not involve my team

JOE ‘BLOGS’

JOE ‘B End of an era…?

I imagine that I was not the only one who rather enjoyed last week seeing two Spanish giants get annihilated on club football's biggest stage, and I imagine that I was not the only one to be surprised to hear myself cheering on German teams.

There are many-ametaphor to describe the feats. Borussia Dortmund coach, Jürgen Klopp, said: “Second half it was like Robin Hood and arrow[ing] into the box with our attacking players – it was great to see.” The Fiver magazine pointed out that the manager had “settled upon the most predictable and obvious historical metaphor to describe a welldrilled German force augmented by sympathetic Polish auxiliaries violently crushing a pocket of resistance from elsewhere in Europe.” It was like watching a bull fight, whereby the horned beast – drafted in from Germany, of course, otherwise this metaphor wouldn't work – had grown tired of the cocky Spanish matador wafting that red cloth all over the place before daintily skipping out of danger's way, so just mauled him down when he was off guard. However, the reaction of the media, to Bayern Munich's demolition of Barcelona in particular, is somewhat unjustified. The matador took a pummelling, but the puncture wounds can be bandaged, the broken bones will heal.

in La Liga, they may have been all but knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals, but this is their sixth-consecutive season of reaching the last four of Europe's premier competition.

Is it possible that everybody is getting so giddy with excitement that Barcelona's rein is over, simply because somebody has actually managed to convincingly beat the world's greatest team of the last decade?

Why is everybody talking about a huge upheaval of the footballing world, whereby a power shift has placed Germany in control? Barcelona had one horror show of a match, looked blunt in attack because of the deployment of a half-fit Lionel Messi, and all of a sudden the Catalan club are yesterday's news.

It is not the end of an era. Barca's tiki-taka style will still continue to be the club's trademark, and the envy of most sides in world football. The team will not break up; it is still a relatively young side. At 33, Xavi is the only outfield player to start against Bayern in the Alliance Arena aged over 30 years. Goalkeeper Victor Valdes was the only other player to peak the 30-year barrier, and at 31 could still manage another nine years at the top level. Barcelona will be back next year, make it to the semi-finals, lose, and face all the same accusations that it is an 'end of an era.' One last word… It says in the official book that commemorates the history of football in Halifax, that Kelly Gilchrist and Adam Cheshire have been integral to the media shaping of the club since its reformation as FC Halifax Town in 2008. It is not wrong.

JOE ‘B Barcelona have not become a terrible team over 90 minutes, they just had an off-day. It may sound like an incredibly simple summation, but Tito Vilanova's side is still among the few best teams in the world. They are 13 points ahead of Real Madrid

The pair have produced unrivalled coverage of the Shaymen for many years now, and have been solely responsible for the development of the media setup at The Shay, which now, as you all know, takes on a host of students from the nearby University of Huddersfield, to provide what is

BLOGS’ arguably the best coverage in non-league football. To those who are unaware, it is a necessity for students from Huddersfield to undertake some form of a placement during the final year of their degree. Every placement available sees the student work for perhaps a day or two per week, in a dingy office, making tea and providing the odd 200-word article rounding up the local crown green bowls scores.

However, the placement that Kelly and Adam offer goes way beyond anything of that nature. It has been a pleasure to work in such an enjoyable environment here at The Shay, which is surely the best place to work in non-league football.

say, Burger Queen – has continued to blossom throughout this season into something worryingly intimate.

We have watched on in awe as he has hosted the not-at-all-corrupt Shaymen Shout player quiz, bamboozling the brains of Neil Aspin's players as they bow down to the little man's aura, which as a quiz master is now surely second only to Magnus Magnusson. So all that is left to say now is thank you, so long and... Ah heck, what do you lot care? Bring on next season, and hopefully some Conference Premier football. Joe Smith

The club is moving onwards and upwards, has a terrific support from a strong core of passionate fans and will no doubt move on to bigger and better things. This is why, from myself, and all of us who make up the media team of 2012-13, we have to give many thanks to Kelly and Adam for giving us this fantastic, and valuable, year's experience in the best job in the world. I do have, though, a recommendation to the new cohort of students deployed to cover the Shaymen next year: look after Kelly. She has made a habit of injuring herself this season, which started after whacking her head on a pole away to Hinckley United in September. That has recently been followed up by an injury to her wrist, which saw prescribed a support and fortnight off work, before spectacularly managing to cartwheel over the media team kit bad in front of her own house.

BLOGS’ It may be worth next year's media team all pitching in to buy one of those padded safety hats, or at least some knee and elbow pads.

We have also had the pleasure, this season, of working with Adam Cheshire, whose relationship with a certain fast food restaurant – which, for advertisement issues, we shall refer to as, let's

HEAD TO HEAD It's the Shaymen Shout's Head to Head (to Head!) Quiz: Grandest of Grand Finals as reigning Champ Phil Senior takes on last year's runner-up Liam Hogan as well as Liam Needham after the spectacular last-minute withdrawal of captain Danny Lowe from the competition. His shocking departure has resulted in the semi-finals being scrapped and thus, a trio of Town Eggheads each with the sole aim of being crowned the Brainiest Shayman. Who will prevail?

Grandest of Grand Finals: Liam 'Needo' Needham versus Phil 'The Champ' Senior versus Liam 'Hoagy' Hogan Pre-Match Thoughts: Danny Lowe: “I'm sorry but I can't compete. Phil is a class above.” Needo: “As long as I come in the top three I'll be happy! That's my main goal! I'm not surprised Danny pulled out to be fair because I've heard him throughout this competition this season and he's rubbish. He couldn't stand the heat! I think I've done alright this season but we won't mention the bits of help! But I'd rather take Phil Senior's Quiz crown off him than win the play-off final! On a serious note, I would be pleasantly shocked if that was to happen.” Phil: “I'm really excited. I'm more excited about the Quiz final than I am about eating my lasagne! I don't even know how Danny Lowe got to the semi-finals to be honest. He is not the cleverest at all! He talks a good game on Twitter where he discusses gardening, boxing and films but he just talks a load of rubbish. I, for one, am not surprised that he's messed himself and realised the magnitude of this stage of the Quiz.” Hoagy: “Two seasons, two finals – that's not a bad record is it? Question 1 How many games does Luis Suarez miss at the start of next season after being banned for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic? Needo: Are there four games left? Also I've been asking if that FA ban includes the threegame ban Liverpool gave him. I don't know if that's the case. All I do know is that it's a ten-game ban, so that would make it that he misses six games next season Phil: Six Hoagy: Six Question 2 FC Halifax Town lost to Gainsborough Trinity in the play-off semi finals last season. Which teams contested the other semi? Needo: Guiseley and Nuneaton Phil: Nuneaton and Guiseley Hoagy: Nuneaton and Guiseley Question 3 Which team won the Conference title this season? Question 5 At the end of the 1996-97 season, Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp became the most expensive foreign signing in England, costing £7.5m. From which side did they sign him from? Needo: Was it somebody like Lazio? No, I remember, it was Inter Milan Phil: Ajax? Hoagy: PSV? Ajax? Question 6 During his short time as Newcastle manager, how many of his eight games did Alan Shearer win? Needo: It's going to be zero isn't it? Phil: One Hoagy: I'm not a Newcastle fan! He can't have won many! I'll say three Question 7 Who said this: “I've always said that you can't live without water for many days, but you can't live for a second without hope.” Was it Brendan Rogers or David Brent? Needo: I'd know if it was David Brent! I'm his biggest fan! He says a lot of rubbish but I can't remember him saying that rubbish! I've literally watched The Office on repeat but I can't remember him saying that. So on that basis, I'll have to go the other way and say Brendan Rogers Phil: It's got to be Rogers hasn't it? Rogers is a clever man!

Needo: The Abbey Hey game was early on but I don't know if there was one before it. Did one count in preseason? I can't think so I'll stick with Abbey Hey Phil: Let me think, it was the FA Cup first…it wasn't anyone good was it? Abbey Hey Hoagy: Abbey Hey Question 9 Which is the highest placed Yorkshire club in the English leagues at the moment? Needo: Well there are none in the Prem! It's got to be Leeds hasn't it? Yes, I'll say Leeds (No! Is Hull Yorkshire? I was going to say Hull as well, but I thought Humberside was different! Gutted!) Phil: That's a decent question. People will automatically say either Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday but Hull is in Yorkshire and they're second in the Championship Hoagy: Leeds Question 10 How many Premier League titles have Manchester United now won? Needo: Is it 13? Phil: I want to say 9 but I think it's higher. I'll say 12! Hoagy: Well Giggs has won 13 titles, so it's got to be 13

Full Time: Needo 8 Phil 8 Hoagy 7 Oh my! Astonishing! The Reigning Champ misses the chance to claim his second successive Brainiest Shayman crown in normal time. Will he be haunted by that final question? We're into a tiebreak situation. Liam Needham has pushed him all the way. Last year's runner-up, Liam Hogan, is out. We're set for a thrilling finale. Hold onto your hats! Tie-Break Question Six different cities beginning with the letter 'M' have boasted Champions League/European Cup finalists. Name them: Needo: Madrid, Manchester, Munich, there's going to be an outrageous one in there! Have I got all night? Have Monaco got to a final? I can't think of anyone else from France. It's hard when you're put on the spot! Of course, Milan! That's poor that I didn't get that quicker! Go on, I give up! Phil: Manchester, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Marseille and Malmo! That's why I'm the Champion! Head to Head Result: Needo 12 Phil 14 (after extra time) Breathless. Ruthless. An unrelenting Phil Senior comes up with a blinding performance in the tiebreak, naming all six of the cities that have boasted Champions League/European Cup finalists. It's a heartbreaker for Needo, who won't want to hear the word 'Hull' ever again. So close to Quiz glory. But it's Phil Senior who retains his crown and prevails as the Brainiest Shayman. Well done Phil!

The Undisputed Champs'

Verdict…with Phil Senior “I'm over the moon! It just shows that class stays permanent. My knowledge of football is clearly better than all of the other lads and that is why I am sat on the bench all of the time because I am a student of the game. The hard training has paid off. I understand that most of the lads don't have as much time on their hands as me but quizzes is what I do best. This could now turn out to be the best year of my life; Quiz Champion again and a promotion via the play-offs. It would be nice to have a trophy this season though.”

THE BIG SHOUT: LIAM NEEDHAM'S HOPES FOR THAT WINNING FEELING IN THE PLAY-OFFS, AT THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE TIME OF ASKING…IN HIS OWN WORDS In 2011 Liam Needham watched from the bench as his Guiseley team-mates succumbed to a heartbreaking 3-2 play-off final defeat at the hands of AFC Telford. Last season, with FC Halifax Town, Needham did not get the opportunity for back-toback Blue Square Bet North play-off finals after Gainsborough Trinity's smash-and-grab at The Shay in the second leg of the semi-final left Neil Aspin's men to ponder a sobering 3-2 aggregate defeat. Twelve months down the line, surely it will be third time lucky for Needham and his quest for play-off glory…? “Is it going to be a case of third time lucky? Hopefully it won't be lucky as such and we deserve to get promoted. I'm looking to take that step into promotion territory, as I haven't experienced that winning feeling when it comes to achieving promotion. I've experienced getting to the final and losing, but it's probably more heartbreaking losing in the semis than it is to lose in the final. In the past two seasons, I've experienced both disappointments. So I'm definitely looking to win it this time around. My past two play-off campaigns, especially in the build-up to them, have been hit by injuries. I've done that twice now, being injured the run-up to them. At Guiseley I was available to play in the play-offs but because I had been injured for a couple of months beforehand, I didn't get the chance to become involved. It was disappointing that I didn't get involved in it all. I actually fancied a start against Telford. I thought, “The Gaffer is thinking about starting me here.” As it turned out he didn't start me and I was on the bench but I understood his decision. But then he didn't put me on from the bench. He had an opportunity to as well and I was thinking, “Put me on, put me on.” It was frustrating. I was also injured in the run up to last season's playoffs as well. This season I have had a couple of knocks in recent weeks in particular but nothing spectacular, so I will be fighting fit for this one. I have had a bit of cold recently and I felt rubbish at the Chester game on Thursday but it wasn't anything to worry about. It

FC HalifaxTown

wasn't bad but I didn't want to be spreading it around the lads ahead of a massive week for the Club. It is a big game against Guiseley and I'll be fit for it, there's no doubt about that. In terms of a play-off campaign, this will be the best personal fitness condition I have been in. I'm really looking forward to the play-offs to be honest. And the final week of the league season was about making sure everyone will be fit for the first leg. There is no doubt about it that the Gaffer, in the build-up to the game, will have tried his best to keep us all fit so that he will have everyone to choose from. A full-strength FC Halifax Town team will be a tough team to beat. Let's hope we are all fighting-fit and then we go out there and give it our best shot. In terms of the play-offs themselves, it doesn't matter how you get in there. It doesn't matter if you get in their by the skin of your teeth on goal difference because you can simply start again. You have got two games to give it your all; two games, initially, to give it everything. And I thought we gave it everything last season against Gainsborough. We should have won the tie over those two legs. The better team lost. I don't want to be arrogant but I think ourselves and Guiseley are the best teams in the play-offs overall, so we have got to do well, particularly in the first leg against them. As long as we apply ourselves right, I think we will do well. I don't think any other team will want to know us in these play-offs. I don't think Guiseley would have wanted us in the semis because when we are on it, we are a very good team and we are very difficult to stop. From an individual point of view, I've really enjoyed this season since I've come back from my loan spell at Bradford Park Avenue. I knew that I could do it from the start but I never really got a chance. But I've come back, I had a go and I think I've done well. As I say, I have really enjoyed it but now, as a team, we need to finish on a positive and go up.” Liam Needham was talking to Adam Cheshire

DALE JOHNSON: THERE'S MORE TO COME FROM TOWN'S FORGOTTE Whilst Lee Gregory and Gareth Seddon have stolen the headlines for various hat-tricks throughout the campaign, heading into the Christmas period it was Dale Johnson who was leading the way for goals. Quietly getting on with his job, Johnson's 11 goals was Town's best at the time, but one fateful twist of a knee cut short the striker's impressive debut season for FC Halifax Town. When Johnson innocuously hit the Worcester City deck it was originally feared he'd be out for a number of weeks, however, that then turned to months, meaning the Shaymen would have to do without their talisman for the remainder of the season. Since then Johnson, who was operated on in February, has been forced to watch from the sidelines, but to his credit has turned up when possible to will his team-mates on. “It's been horrible, you feel like you want to be out there helping the lads. You want to enjoy the good times when they're winning, and in the bad times you want to make a difference,” Johnson exclusively revealed to the Shaymen Shout. “I'm still part of the squad going to games and that is probably the highlight of the whole thing. I'm still connected with the Club and having a laugh with the lads in the changing rooms, otherwise I'd have been pulling my hair out.” After joining Town from Droylsden in the summer, things began for Johnson at the Club when he scored on his debut at Bishop's Stortford in the season opener. A further seven goals followed before the end of September from the striker, an impressive return, and if that ratio continued Johnson will have almost certainly finished as the

FC HalifaxTown

Club's top scorer. “I fancied myself as top scorer, especially with the way it has gone. The one thing I did do was score consistently. I didn't score three or four in games like the other lads, but I got around one every two games, so I would have been challenging Greggors. “I've got two highlights from the season; there is the Bishop's Stortford goal on my debut. I had an awful game but to score was ideal. “Then the Droylsden goal sticks out. I came off the bench so I was a bit annoyed and it was against my former team. I vaguely remember using my strength to hold my old team-mate off who I could hear chasing me. Then I took two more defenders away with a shimmy and scored, then celebrated in front of the photographer.” Johnson signed from the Bloods in the summer alongside Dan Gardner, who made the same switch, and after a fine season together last season there was much anticipation about the pair lining up together this season. However, they both suffered injuries at the opposite time meaning they only started one game together, in the West Riding County Cup at Liversedge, where they both scored. “I was really gutted I didn't get to play with Dan Gardner as we had such a good rapport together at Droylsden. We're on the same wave length and I loved playing with him last year. “I feel the fans haven't seen enough of me, and perhaps Dan as well to an extent. There is so much more to come. It was going well until December as I was getting the goals, but there was a bit more in me performance-wise. “My message to the fans is that hopefully I can come back, ideally in the Conference Premier,

E EN MAN and I'll start scoring again. “I've not had anything in concrete from the Club about next season. Neil Aspin is hoping to take me to see a physio from a Premier League team and he'll have a look and judge the progression.” Tonight the Shaymen take on Guiseley in the first leg of their play-off semi-final, the sort of game Johnson joined the Club to be a part of, but will be forced to sit in the East Stand instead. Despite that he has full confidence in the team recording a positive result ahead of

Saturday's second leg at Nethermoor Park. “The play-offs are going to be nervous, it could come down to luck but I hope we can bring our ability through. If we work hard as a team then we'll make our own luck. “They are a solid team Guiseley, but I've not seen any stand-out players; they haven't got a Dan Gardner! If we can keep our shape right and get Dan on the ball as much as we can in the last third, then anything could happen.” Johnson certainly started things off nicely at FC Halifax Town, but all parties agree there is more to come, and hopefully the Shay faithful will see that in the Conference Premier next season. WORSLEY'S SEARCH Worsley's search for Ronaldo-esque inspiration ahead of Play-Offs Chris Worsley has been an influential force in FC Halifax Town's midfield this season and has regularly featured in Neil Aspin's preferred threepronged-midfield formation. The former Hyde star, who won the Blue Square Bet North title last season, has chipped in with a number of goals this term as well as assisting on a regular basis. Despite his young age, Worsley has had an extensive career in non-league football and brings a wealth of experience to Town's midfield. But where did it all start for the Manchurian? “From a young age, same as everybody, their dad takes them down for a kick about and then takes you to a team and it all just kicked on from there,” he told the Shaymen Shout.

Of course, that comes with it the privilege of watching some of the best players to ever have played the game, but as a youngster, who did Worsley aspire to be like and has that continued into his current playing career? “I think you always aspire to be like somebody when you are younger, but when you get older you just try to do your own thing and be your own person,” he said. “I am not really an out and out winger, but obviously we play with a three in there, so I am usually the right of the three so I can come wide or sit back in midfield. “Growing up, you look at people and have people you want to be like. I am a Manchester lad and support United, so you look up to your Scholes' and Beckhams' as they are good role models.” Worsley usually occupies the number seven shirt for FC Halifax Town – a number that is more synonymous with United's Beckham and of course, more recently, Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It started as a youngster, just down playing on Ten Acres Lane in Manchester and then basically five or six-a-side; it just built from there. You start playing Saturday's and Sunday's and then you end up where you are at.”

The now Real Madrid winger is arguably one of the greatest to play the game, but he is constantly in competition with Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Despite plying his trade largely in non-league football, with stints at Curzon Ashton and more recently at Hyde, Worsley has been able to compete against some of the greats of world football.

This has, of course, sparked the age-old debate about who is better, with opinions largely split 50/50, but Worsley believes the former Manchester United ace just edges proceedings.

“When I played for Curzon Ashton, we played for the United reserve team in a pre-season friendly,” he said.

“I would go with Ronaldo,” he said.

“Gerard Pique, Danny Welbeck, John O'Shea and Darren Gibson all played and within a few years they had all moved into the first team and Pique moved to Barcelona. “They beat us 9-1, we were chasing shadows, but it was a good experience.” It was a dream come true for the midfield work horse, who grew up watching the red devils with his family.

FC HalifaxTown

“For me he has got everything, both feet, good in the air and is both physical and strong. Of course, then you would have people that say Messi. “They are two different types of players and both are up there, but for me I would say Ronaldo.” Chris Worsley will now be searching for some Cristiano Ronaldo-esque inspiration as his FC Halifax Town side go into their play-off campaign. Is another Blue Square Bet North promotion on the cards for Worsley…? Lewis Wood-Thompson

AWAY FROM THE SHAY Has Luis Suarez bitten off more than he can chew? How do you solve a problem like Luis Suarez - a man with such admirable talent with the ball at his feet, but a dreaded hot-headed personality that is ready to explode? Arguably one of the most despised Premier League players to date, Suarez has silenced his critics time after time with some outstanding goals and performances. But, married with these moments of glory, come his outlandish and downright despicable behaviour that has seen him become the man everybody loves to hate. Liverpool fans will defend him when the entire world is pointing the finger, but even his recent actions have left some of the Anfield faithful in disbelief. In the previous Sunday's clash with Chelsea, there is no more perfect metaphor for Suarez's deteriorating Liverpool career. The striker was heavily involved in every talking point – firstly assisting beautifully for Daniel Sturridge's second-half equaliser. Then, bizarrely, the arduous forward was caught red-handed in the penalty area when he handballed to give away the penalty for Chelsea's second. What was to follow, however, was a scene quite implausible to most – including Branislav Ivanovic – as Suarez lost his cool and chomped down on the defenders arm, before then going onto score the winner in injury time. The referee and officials missed the incident, but the cameras certainly didn't and Suarez has since been lamented by world football as a disgrace to the game. It's not the first time the Uruguayan has been involved in a biting incident either, having previously seen out his Ajax career by locking his jaws on PSV midfielder Otman Bakkal's shoulder. He quickly received a two-game ban from Ajax over the off-the-ball incident and was fined heavily by the Dutch outfit. Following this, the Dutch FA handed him a further seven games to be served on the side-lines.

FC HalifaxTown

The press bemoaned him that day, branding him the “Cannibal of Ajax”. This has been a trait mirrored by the British press in the wake of the recent bite, with the Daily Mirror labelling him the “Kop Cannibal”. Needless to say, there are a feast of incidents that have shone a negative light on his career. His persistent diving has been something of ridicule for opposing fans and led to Stoke City manager Tony Pulis calling him a “cheat”. And of course, who could forget his racial spat with Patrice Evra, which led to an eight-game ban and another heavy fine. His defence, in that instance, was that he claimed it was simply a loss in translation and cultural difference between his native Uruguay and Evra's France. Furthermore, Suarez has continually dictated the media spotlight with both sides of the good and bad spectrum. He has scored some truly magnificent goals, but often spoils things with an act of stupidity – swearing at the Mansfield fans after beating them in the FA Cup, being a prime example. So where do Liverpool go from here? At the time of writing, Suarez has been charged by the FA for violent conduct and will surely receive a lengthy ban. However, can it be any longer than his eight game-ban imposed earlier in his Liverpool career? This would imply to some that biting is deemed a worse offence than racial abuse. In the wake of the incident, the Uruguayan apologised for his behaviour but this has done little to save face, with the PFA now offering him anger management to control his unpredictable temper. Despite Liverpool still reviewing the incident, the Merseyside club have claimed that the forward still has a future at Anfield. Perhaps his £22m price tag is worth more than Liverpool's reputation? What is undeniable is the talent the man possesses, but what is ultimately indefensible is his behaviour. Whether Liverpool will cut their losses and take a new direction is yet to be seen, but it is certainly something to chew over. Lewis Wood-Thompson
